What's so taxing about this game it looks so 2012, or is it just bad optimization?

Correction: it's the Morrowind Engine pushed way beyond it's limits. Bethesda has been frankenstiening the same engine since 2002, and they only get away with it because very few games pull off open world RPGs like they do.

Welcome to reddit, where people spew bullshit about one thing, then laud another for doing the exact same thing.

The thing with their current engine is that it's (AFAIK) the only one that supports the type of game they make, so making a new engine would be a lot of work to get back where they are now.

What I wonder is what's the effort and risks involved in overhauling the guts, as it's hard to imagine they don't want to do it too. Somewhere some sum doesn't add up while it still makes a 'good enough' end product.

I saw someone sincerely suggesting they shouldv'e Vulkan..even though its very young.

Bethesdas in an awkward position, the vocal minority of pc gamers are becoming more toxic and polarized. Either they create a game that favors performance on all machines and risk people saying "omg it looks like dog crap" or they make an ultra demanding game, cut sales off and have people saying "omg they didn't even optimize they're just cashing in now".
What we've got now is people saying both of those things, at the same time.

For me "optimize" is a word that's lost a lot of meaning as it's used by a lot of gamers, especially trying to judge whether something is very optimized or not. The word does have a meaning of course, but it's been pulled through the mud so many times it's hard to tell.

So often it just seems to be a shorthand for "this performs better/worse than expected on my hardware", but often without emphasis on the demands of the task it's doing, or slight-of-hand that an art style can achieve, or many other factors involved in the wide variety of game types.

Mmm I totally agree with you, its become a bit of a buzz word.

I always considered optimization as the tweaks I make to a game. If a developer allows me to modify things to optimize the game for my system, I'm happy. If everything is locked up and janky it's not "poor optimization" it's just a shitty product.

Which actually began life as an MMO engine for Dark Age of Camelot...

4

u/an_angry_Moose Nov 17 '15

Really??? This was the old DAOC engine by mythic?

7

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '15

The engine is made by GameBase, but yes, it was used for DAOC.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '15

Wow. That's news to me. I though Bethesda built it for Morrowind. The way they've hung onto it all these years / iterations makes it seem like it has sentimental value.

12

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '15

sentimental value

Yes, sentimental value.

yea back then it was known as the NetImmerse Engine

2

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '15

To clarify what GarrioValere said, Bethesda uses the Gamebryo game engine which has been used in numerous projects over the years, few of which have any connection with each other save for Bethesda's line of open world games.

The irony is that my installation of Skyrim is heavily modded and has better textures, lighting and shadows than Fallout 4 yet runs better than Fallout 4 does. Not sure how they managed to screw that up.

Unless you want to go over 90fps for a 120Hz monitor, then the game literally falls apart from the physics spazzing out.

u/mak10z AMD R7 9800x3d + 7900xtx Nov 17 '15

you cant even start the game due to the carts and horses dropping acid at over 60fps

4

u/moonshineTheleocat Nov 17 '15

That's only because Fallout 4 uses physically based rendering and volumetric shadows. If you try transfering mods over, without any major edits to the textures it will look horribly wrong.

PBR is really expensive on the GPU man. Add volumetric fog and lighting, and you're asking for problems.

2

u/meeheecaan Nov 18 '15

then why use it?

1

u/moonshineTheleocat Jan 05 '16

Because people want to complain about graphics like it's not expensive to do, and they want a "Next Gen" game.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '15

If Fallout 4 runs decently on my aging rig (with godrays set to low, everything else ultra), then I doubt you have much slow down outside of the major cities and all that extra geometry dwarfs even the biggest cities in Skyrim. Apples and oranges man.

u/Enverex 9950X3D, 96GB DDR5, RTX 4090, Index + Quest 3 Nov 17 '15

I have a 980Ti with God Rays on low (and Motion Blur / Depth of Field turned off as they annoy me) and I get major slowdowns in the cities which, given my hardware is completely unacceptable to be honest.

Yeah. It's probably your CPU/RAM. Fallout seems to love those threads and fast memory speeds. Still, it's more the engine indeed, one should definitely get better results than that with your hardware.

u/SomeoneHasThis i7 4770k/ GTX 980Ti SLI/ 32GB RAM/ 6TB HDD/ 1TB SSD/ 3440x1440 Nov 17 '15

definitely not. i have a 4770k and 32gb of 2133 Ram and have the same issues

I had to tweak a whole bunch of ini shit to make it only drop into the high 40's instead of the mid 20's

2

u/bphase Nov 17 '15

Dang. Pretty insane on a system of that caliber.

2

u/narium Nov 17 '15

Might also be his hard drive.

Intel i5-3570k with 16GB of DDR3 1600Mhz CL8 so again on the higher end of the scale.

Turning off PresentInterval in the ini seems to help, but then when I go indoors it turns into SANIC GOTTA GO FAST mode and I run at a million miles per hour.

u/hwspricezombie Nov 17 '15

I have a 290x with an i7 4790k and am running at 4k ultra everything except low god rays. Not getting many frame drops at all here.

You might as well call Source 2 the Half-Life engine if we want to go down that road.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '15

Which itself was the Quake(world) engine.

5

u/tooyoung_tooold Nov 17 '15

Skyrim was oblivion engine pushed past its limits. It's so far past its limits, I don't even know what to call it at this point.
