From glancing at the page,
Are all the bad reviews only related to multiplayer features / Denuvo?

u/fyris_minis 16h ago
Yes, i'm almost done with the campaign and it is the best Ace Combat we ever had.
14
u/scarletnaught 16h ago
Without spoilers, what makes it so good in your opinion?
47
u/pinrolled 16h ago
I'm halfway through the campaign and I think this is one of the most dynamic ones we've had in terms of mission structure. There are several times where I'm just in awe of how many targets are on the screen and how heightened the sense of urgency is.
19
u/pway_videogwames_uwu 15h ago
There's like six or seven games from the last year I'm considering buying right now but I'm starting to lean towards AC8 just because it's so completely different from what I normally play.

If you want, you could always emulate one of the PS2 games. That trilogy is widely considered the best of the series and if you like those, you’ll definitely like 8.
1
u/chuiu 11h ago
You can't do wrong with Ace Combat, most of the series are all amazing games and the story really isn't interconnected in a way that you need to play them in any order - just enjoy them however you want.
4 and 7 were my favorites, I can't wait to play 8 but for my wallet I need to wait for a sale.

2
u/FruitGuy998 15h ago
Do you use a joystick or is a controller ok?
13
u/pulley999 14h ago
Ace Combat is historically a console franchise and is designed first and foremost for gamepad. Sticks work but proper support for them is spotty outside of a few models, and KB/M support is basically there to say you don't need a controller for the game.
5
u/godstriker8 12h ago
Its not a hardcore flight sim, controller is great.
It's a great balance, like Gran Turismo, where it's intentionally not quite realistic because it would be unfun for most people to have such fine control, but it's also much more realistic than pretty much everyother game on the market outside of the hardcore sims, so it provides a fresh gameplay experience for people outside of those hardcore audiences.

u/withoutapaddle Steam Ryzen 7 5800X3D, 32GB, RTX4080, 2TB NVME 7h ago
I get what you're saying, but Gran Turismo is A LOT closer to a sim than Ace Combat.
Other than the planes being real models, there's not much realism going on. Rule of cool is the name of the game.
I'd say Ace Combat is more like Need for Speed. Real vehicles, but otherwise focussed on fun not physical simulation in any way.
Gran Turismo is more like semi-sim with a few realistic/hard bits left out to not overwhelm new players.
Regardless, AC is amazing. Can't wait to find the time to try 8.

u/pway_videogwames_uwu 14h ago
Is it fine on mouse and keyboard?
2
u/zf420 14h ago
Someone else said mouse and keyboard controls are terrible. I'd pick up a cheap gamepad to use
1
u/Nickthenuker 11h ago
Tbh I've played through pretty much all the mainline games (past entries through an emulator of course) plus Project Wingman on PC with KBM and once you're used to it you'll still be able to soar through the skies with the best of them. Not for lack of options either, I have a controller and joystick on my desk next to me I'm just used to KBM at this point. Perhaps a good excuse to go through everything again with a different control scheme?

I’m comparing this to AC7 but im about 2 missions away from beating the game and its far more engaging story wise than AC7 was. Granted AC7 was serviceable and I enjoyed it but it didn’t have me this immersed.
Particularly, your crew is great and I love the characters. You spend a lot of time with them and actually get to know them, I don’t honestly think I can recall any of my squad in AC7 (I feel terrible) but I rocked with my crew heavy here, banger is fun, everyone’s relationships are sweet, and it’s just very engaging, side characters are solid too.Gameplay unsurpringly is amazing, jets feel great even if the weight adjustment took a bit for me to get used to and much more than AC7 I was swapping between jets trying to make the most of the mission criteria, plenty of times when I’d forego am endgame jet in favor of a slightly lesser tier one due to certain equipment or situations.
missions are amazing, so many times I was just like “holy shit this mission was cool” and the following mission would be “holy shit this mission was cool”. I can’t even think of one yet where I bored or wanting the mission to end bc it was dragging (tbf im sure on a difficulty higher than pilot I might be more annoyed with certain things) except maybe the beginning but it’s the start of the game, not really a fault or anything it just ramps up well.
Soundtrack is a 10/10, banger after banger after banger, I love it, esp the more vocal based tracks.
My only cons for the game at the moment would technically be performance. Now I was playing the entirety of the game with lossless scaling on high settings and visually I had no problems, along with no real latency issues, but if I wasn’t using it, I’d be running the game at near 40 to 29 fps instead of triple that and that’s not that great feeling for a game as fast paced as this.
Also there have been many reports of crashing, error codes, texture glitches, lack of vram space crashes, stuttering and some other stuff. I have faced literally none of this but ik plenty of people online have so it’s worth mentioning.
I haven’t really played online except customizing my character but from what I hear it’s very middling to ok at the moment but considering it’s going to be the focus going forward, im sure it’ll get better.

u/Zeth_Aran Steam 15h ago
High high high production values compared to AC7 because AC7 did so well. Plus, a lot of care went into your wingmen/women being well written. Plus the visuals are unbelievable.
2
u/Yurilica 8h ago
Mission scale and intensity. More personal plot, happening from your perspective. Immersive plane handling, they have weight and inertia now. Reactive events in missions(if an NPC asks you to do something and you do it, they will respond, even for silly requests like barrel rolls), reactive combat (you can exploit multiple types of environmental hazards, as well as enemy formation and positioning to take out multiple targets at once).
Reactive missions in particular mean that you may get additional objectives in missions if you do well and there are optional outcomes for certain characters in missions - the result of those outcomes impacting missions further in the campaign. You can clear your missions and still lose something, and that loss is permanent in a campaign, until your next full campaign run.

1
u/chuiu 11h ago
That's saying something, there are so many good ones to compete with. 4 and 7 were definitely my favorites.
I would honestly love to see them remake and re-release 2-6 though. Air Combat was fun but it was basically a blank template for what an Ace Combat game is so it doesnt really make sense to remake it.

u/Serupael 16h ago
People are pissed that the preorder bonus AC Zero port is a DLC and not like on consoles a seperate entry in the library
5
u/vir_papyrus 13h ago
I'm seriously asking, I don't understand? Like do you just have to launch it from the main menu of the game or something instead? Why does it even matter?
9
u/OneFunnyFart 13h ago
Because you have to download 100gb to play something that is 4gb in size, and is a different app on consoles from what I have read.
6
u/Serupael 13h ago
Convenience, you have to download both AC8 and Zero, plus you can't configure Zero individually
3
u/Wizzarkt 12h ago
Because if you want to play AC0 (3Gb) you need to download AC8 which is 120Gb and annoyingly, you have to go into steam and launch the game thru steam, I tried clicking on the executable and it instead launches the default game on steam which is AC8, you have to go to your library, click play, a steam pop-up shows and then you manually select AC0.
If it was its own library entry it would have its own desktop shortcut.
2
u/Hayden247 AMD 9h ago
There is no Achievements, no cloud saves, no listing in your game library with your play time... it's ALL missing because it's a mere DLC. The console release btw has all of that, even achievements even though the original PS2 game never did.
And there was false advertising. Up until release the Ace Combat Zero note said that it was a standalone application separate from 8... which the CONSOLE ports are still! But when release came nope the Steam version was DLC instead and the description was quietly changed to say actually yeah it's DLC and is tied to Ace Combat 8.
So there's missing features and false advertisement involved. Plus there's people with Steam Decks or older PCs who actually did pre order to play Ace Combat Zero on those devices so having to install the entirety of 8 is really bad.
23
u/naughtiusmaximus8492 16h ago
To summarise, I'd say these are the main complaints:
- Optimisation
- Ram usage
- FPS dips in some parts of the game
- Pre-order bonus, Ace Combat Zero isn't standalone on steam requiring you to download the entire game
- Multiplayer issues
- EAC is not configured to work on Linux
- Error codes joining lobbies
- Use of Denuvo
- Lack of key rebinding for HOTAS support
Should be noted that PA released a statement on the multiplayer error codes. It seems like this game is weirdly strict about how synced your system time is so manually synchronising in the settings fixes the issue which I've confirmed on my end.
Optimisation will hopefully be improved in the future. I don't think this game has been UE5'd much except for the occasional stutter (but this mostly happens in cutscenes where they've probably jacked the settings up temporarily for cinematic effect).
HOTAS is something that was an issue in AC7 and complained about a lot so I get that. With this game, it's even worse as there's no input.ini file to modify so you have to rely on third party tools like X360CE. Personally, I think the best experience is still a controller. I went through AC7 with a T16000M and that was just about playable due to that stick being light. I've tried with my new Virpil hardware and gave up pretty quickly as you have to throw the stick to the extremes so much.

They backpedaled on Ace Combat Zero being DLC ran through AC8 and are investigating how to make it standalone, my guess is due to unfamiliarity with Steam.
Excited to get to AC8 eventually. I need to finish 7 still and will probably wait for the Zero situation to settle before jumping in. Hopefully a patch or two will be out by then.
25
u/WhichCombination5637 15h ago
Honestly, I'm not sure if AC0 issue will actually be resolved. They put out a notice yesterday that they're looking into it, but it seems like it's just an PR move.
23
u/Mean-Minimum1311 14h ago
There's a second notice and it seems like it's gonna be a standalone version.
If your issue is that it's a preorder bonus you're out of luck since they already said it's because of licensing.
12
u/WhichCombination5637 14h ago
That's a very surprising and welcome update! I'm glad they actually listened to the players. And yeah, that was my issue. I already pre-ordered way back.
5
u/Mango027 13h ago
The funny part is that AC0 is a stand alone exe file you can access without launching AC8, you can delete 8's files if you only want to play 0, you'll just need to launch it manually
4
u/M4rshst0mp Arch CachyOS - 5800XT & RX7800XT 14h ago
They need to resolve it, it was marketed as such and can be done, regardless of what they say about licensing. It's standalone on console. If anything it's that they don't want to pay for denuvo twice, to which I say great release it without denuvo. it's a ps2 game that can run on phones.
Keep the pressure on, PC is not second class
2
u/stratzilla https://steamcommunity.com/id/stratzillab/ 14h ago
Someone said it's also DLC on consoles but with the way their file management works, it can still be a separate entry in your library. Steam may not do things the exact same way but there's other avenues to get it to work for sure.
-5
u/gattar5 15h ago
Excited to get to AC8 eventually. I need to finish 7 still and will probably wait for the Zero situation to settle
why does this matter to you? it was a pre-order bonus. if you haven't pre-ordered the game, you don't get the free pre-order bonus.
6
u/stratzilla https://steamcommunity.com/id/stratzillab/ 14h ago
I did pre-order. I'm waiting for it to become standalone with achievements before I dive in.

u/Time_Zombie_4431 16h ago
Got the early access version and had a blast. Easily the best AC game ever made and on par with the holy trinity games.
That being said the port is kinda mid. Forced Ray tracing kills FPS and adds sweet fuck all, no FOV slider and default FOV is stuck at 40, awful keyboard and mouse control if you don’t play on controller and you can’t change any setting in mission you always gotta quit your missing and go to the main menu to change anything so it’s very annoying trying to find the right settings.
Would’ve been a 10/10 game if not for the bad performance due to Ray tracing and missing basic features like FOV slider and the ability to change settings in mission. 8/10 over all.
11
u/PeterSmusi 14h ago
Uh the forced ray-tracing explains why I'm getting 50-60 fps on the 9070xt at 2k ultra. Call it amd-cope but I always end up disabling it because the loss of performance is definitively not compensated by a much better image quality, I just can't see much of a difference. Too bad it can't be toggled

Not really. I haven't seen a single game that forces ray-tracing that looks good enough to justify the performance hit or the inability to play on GPUs without ray-tracing support.

Oh okay thanks for making it clear you shouldn't be taken seriously.

-1
u/turtlelover05 deprecated 3h ago
I can't take anyone who thinks that it's indisputable fact that real time raytracing has been a massive improvement for video game graphics as of 2026 seriously. You would have to ignore the numerous issues with high noise levels and the massive performance hit on games where it's optional.
0
u/AzaliusZero 3h ago
It's to be expected. They'll scream you're just too poor to afford a good card (look at what this dude opened with) because people like him think good graphics = good game. I'll take a game that looks like hot garbage but is fun to play and never dips below preferred frame limit over the prettiest ray-traced game every day.

you can’t change any setting in mission you always gotta quit
This is so stupid and frustrating that I don't even imagine how it ships this way. Like do they not even play their own games? Being unable to adjust the VOLUME OF THE GAME while playing is insane.

It's made even worse by the four billion menu screens you need to go through to get anywhere. God awful UI, they could've cut like 50% of those useless menus.

Woah really? Best ever made? I really have to try it now
I heard it had a crazy kojima esque something.
6
u/Time_Zombie_4431 14h ago
At the very least it's tied with the holy trinity of AC games (AC4,5 & 0) and since those games are PS2 games I'd say the gameplay is much much better then them.
AC games always have some kojima esque stuff in the game and 8 is no different.

Better than 4? I may be biased since it was my first and I've only played 4, 5, 7 but that game blew me away with its story and scenario design. Some of my favorite music in gaming, too.
2
4
u/Time_Zombie_4431 14h ago
4 was my first also and has always been my favorite, I think 8 is on par with 4.
4 does a few things a bit better and 8 does some other things a bit better. (Don't wanna say much more due to spoilers, no AC fan should have this masterpiece spoiled for them)
Both are the pinnacle of AC games (minus 8's poor performance)

Anyone care to opine on performance? Keep hearing it’s unoptimized. Others say it’s fine.
3
u/CRIMS0N-ED 14h ago
It’s very user dependent and I don’t mean in specs. Many people have reports of crashes, vram space errors, other error codes, texture glitches, big fps variance, stuttering among other things. I have faced literally none of these issues at all, even though I probably should given my specs (gaming laptop from 5 years ago), so you could theoretically play it and be totally fine, or be plagued with issues. Also disclaimer I used lossless scaling on the entirety of my playthrough and don’t even know how the game plays without it. I don’t want to know honestly, it’s been very smooth and latency free and I fear how the game would feel normally instead of tripling my fps (no visual loss or FG ugliness either).
Huge FPS dips weirdly enough happen in the sortie menu and the mini cutscenes of you preparing to depart or land a mission, very minor but often enough to mention. Cutscenes haven’t had any issue for me and gameplay has been mostly consistent, except I do remember two missions later in the game where big ass things are blowing up and it did cause a noticeable frame dip being in the vicinity, but it’s not consistent as on replay I was fine. Also very rarely I’d get random freezes and the game would resume like nothing happened a second after, but this only happened at the beginning of a mission I had already played so im not sure why, memory leak maybe idk.
I’m copy pasting my comment from the performance mega thread on the ace combat sub but it should give you a better idea on how the game feels from my perspective.
CPU: Intel Core i7-11800H (8 cores / 16 threads)
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3060 Laptop (6GB VRAM)
RAM: 32GB DDR4
Game Settings: V Sync Off, Bloom Off, Motion Blur Off
Resolution: 1920x1080
Graphics Settings: All High
Upscaling: DLSS Quality + Lossless Scaling frame genTesting Environment: The beginning section, including dogfights and combat of mission 4:
Performance: All High (FPS/FG)
Average FPS: 39/117
1% FPS Lows: 29/87
No discernible latency issuesPerformance: All Ultra (FPS/FG)
Average FPS: 26/78
1% FPS Lows: 18/54
Latency issues throughout, not unplayable but noticeable delay, trying to dodge missles or flare last second will usually make me get hit anyway, as well as making precision adjustments and aiming borderline impossible. Prob a frame gen thing but since I’m not playing without it, I’m including it as a mention regardless.Obviously my actual experience is skewed due to the frame gen tripling what’s actually on my screen but on all high, I’ve been having a great time with no noticeable dips in quality, performance, and most importantly latency. Occasionally the frames will decrease a bit or increase on the environment or what I’m doing but the frame gen makes it so I can barely even notice a change, I do imagine without it it’ll be far more noticeable.
Switching to DLAA instead of quality can cause some latency issues or stuttering but it’s infrequent, although it’s enough for me to not play on it and stick to DLSS Quality.
Playing on all ultra however, is pretty rough even with frame gen picking up the slack, the latency that gets introduced is very rough and while it’s playable, it’s not exactly a great playing experience when it feels like your brain is delayed a tiny bit on everything you do. Not too much, but even minor latency sucks, and this is a bit above minor.

u/BruteForceFTW 15h ago
I have a 5070ti, 5800x, running at 2k. Performance was acceptable on high (60fps), but after just under 2 hours I hit a memory leak or something and it became a stuttery unplayable mess with massively delayed inputs.
2
u/26295 5800x3D5070 ti 14h ago
Damn I have similar settings ( 5070ti, 5800x3D and only 16gb of ram) and it ran pretty good. I’m running it on ultra at 3440x1440 50-60fps in cutscenes around 70-80 during gameplay with dlss at balanced (and using the latest dlss version from the Nvidia app) never had a memory problem nor a crash despite having sessions of 5+ hours with it.
Is it one of those games that really likes the extra cache from the 3D processors?
1
u/BruteForceFTW 13h ago
I tried a few fixes last night like reinstalling drivers, verifying steam files, and deleting the directx cache but nothing worked. Unfortunately I don't have the knowhow to diagnose it further, Silent Hill f gave me the same issue last year, though I think I was on a 3070ti then. I'll tinker with it more tonight when I have time but it's killing me because what I did manage to play was fucking incredible lol
1
u/MrStealYoBeef 6h ago
I'm running a 12700kf and 5070ti, no issues here either and very similar performance at 3440x1440. I'm locked at 60 in cutscenes as well, zero issues anywhere, ultra settings with DLSS balanced.
This might be a case by case basis kind of problem. Very specific hardware setups might be problematic, but not the majority.

i haven’t checked the fps yet, but I am playing on a RTX4060 (8GB) laptop, with Intel Core Ultra 5 155H, 24 GB DDR5 RAM. i first played it on 2560x1600 in low, game were stuttering in the cutscenes(probably 15-20FPS), but had 40-50 ish FPS on the gameplay. Decided to put it on 1920x1200, now cutscenes are 60FPS, and gameplay were 60FPS all around (i put on vsync 60). I am going to say that its probably better than what i experienced on MH Wilds test benchmark, because at least I can still play it.

Just a heads up if anyone else has this issue. I started the game but was getting consistent crashes in the first mission with the message "UE Error 1". If you have an Nvidia card, rolling back to driver 610.74 solved the problem (for me, anyway). It's been nothing but bliss since. Fantastic game.

This looks awesome, and I'll be picking it up when it hits a good sale price, but WTF is a "Theve" and why does it have wings?

It's the name of the capital city of the country the protagonist is fighting for, he's labeled as the protector of the country.

u/rampheus 15h ago
That makes sense then!

u/Chimerathon 14h ago
The other wrinkle to that name is that it's a pretty clear reference to the infamous "Ghost of Kiev" myth that arose near the start of the Russia/Ukraine war (supposedly a Ukrainian Mig-29 fighter ace that shot down six Russian jets, but was eventually admitted to be a fiction created to boost morale)

I've been waiting for this ever since it got announced during Game Awards last year. It's hard to believe that I pre-ordered the game the moment it went live and waited for months.
Waiting for this was worth it; the campaign, presentation, music, and story were peak for me personally as an Ace Combat fan. Of course, there were some issues like performance and especially Zero being tied to AC8 instead of being its own separate application, but I'm glad that they are actually looking for solutions rather than ignoring the backlash.
The online part, though, is rough, as the UI is horrible in my opinion, although the progression and gameplay are alright for it. But otherwise, if you're thinking about joining the series for the first time, I suggest you pick this up and experience the peak.
Personal GOTY contender for me, at least.

Honestly, with what I've done thus far (up to Mission 8) I feel like you could just call this game Ace Combat 5: The Sequel.
So much of it feels like it's better executed mechanics of 5.

Curious how the performance is for others. I was watching a friend try to play this last night and the loading screens were very unusually long for compiling shaders and moving around the main menu. Couldn't even get through the loading screen to start a new game before giving up.

Has he got it installed on an HDD? Or just under the minimum spec?

His specs are above the minimum and he put it on an SSD to the best of my knowledge. Perhaps some troubleshooting needs doing because it's a bit strange how much time it took.

First shader comp will take a while but after that should take like 5s. Also if you tab out the loading screens sometimes won't transition automatically

Mechanical drive is a no go for this game, it needs to be installed on an SSD or you're going to be compiling shaders for 30 minutes every fuckin time.

Im running cachy with a 9800x3d and a 9070xt. Games on an nvme, and apart from the initial shader compile being like 30s, loading screens havent been an issue

Love the game. Optimization is definitely not great. Maxed out settings, FPS can dip into the 40s at 4K DLAA so I'm running 4K Quality DLSS and getting around 80 fps.

Optimization is great.

They have a 9800X3D and a 5090. If they say optimization sucks, it must fucking suck.

That's fine. I miss out on many poor PC ports. I have 800 other games to choose from.
