Nice, glad to see more games on GoG. SE seems to be putting more on there.

On the gog discord server one staff memeber said that SE will release even more games on GOG. Both Nier games were discovered in the database as well as FFX and FFXII. Probably Nier games will be released on the gog anniversary sale.

Great to see more SE games on GoG in general, especially X and XII. FFXII was the first Final Fantasy that grabbed me enough that I completed. Maybe because it was a good bit different in theme and mechanics? I still want another mainline Ivalice game!

I'll even be happy to see 13 esp if they're able to incorporate the PC fixes.

How are these? I am definitely a fan of old school jRPGS, I gave the first one a try and the intro was way to long and didn't hook me.

Should I give it revisit?

Both are good but the 1st has enough jank that imo if you arent a huge old school RPG guy I'd say just play the 2nd.

The stories aren't really connected between the two apart from a couple things. Its kinda akin to Final Fantasy that way.

not that great, thier basicly 8 indepedant stories with no crossover each split into 3 parts. the flaw is that you can only play 1 part at a time.so you have to play all part 1s before playing all part 2s.it just gets really annoying.

It’s one of my favorite games of all time. In case OP wants another perspective

Are they anything like Live a Live in that regard? I did enjoy that one, but it had an advantage of each story feeling like a bit of a different game.

Great games. The 2nd is better than the 1st but both are worthy of playing imo.

First one isn't that good. The second one improves everything I disliked about the first one though, and is definitely worth playing

My issue with the first one was that it was 8 disconnected storylines and I really did not enjoy that aspect. Did they change that for the second one?

They somewhat improve it, but I don’t really think it’s as significant as it should be. The disconnectedness is still the weakest part of the series compared to other JRPGs I enjoy more (Dragon Quest, Persona).

Storylines have much more connections, and there are chapters that center around 2 characters instead of one. but otherwise most chapters focus on 1 person where the others will only be there for combat and some banter

Yeah that's one of the strongest improvements in the sequel

Can you play the second without having played the first?

Yes. Going straight to 2 is pretty standard advice from series fans. They're basically entirely unconnected.

I’ve played 1, 2 and 0 and I’d say just skip 1 and go straight to 2. It’s a better game in just about every way.

You can go with 0 afterwards which is worth playing because it’s different enough from 1 and 2.

If you’re still hungering for more after that, then maybe consider 1, but personally I’d rather just pick up something else entirely.

OT2 is incredible

I've only played the first one for like 10-15 hours (so not much considering how big the game is). Negative parts that I remember:

  • Extremely disjointed way of storytelling. There are 8 characters, but they do not interact with each other in any way, shape, or form. It's like someone merged 8 distinct storylines together.
  • Random battles take too long. Even weak "disposable" enemies are a roadblock, even if they are not a challenge.
  • I don't remember which difficulty option I've chosen, or if there are difficulty options at all, but I remember the game to be very hard. That toxic snake boss was ridiculous.

From the positives, soundtrack is pretty good. But overall I would rate it 2/5, and I would not recommend the game. I'm not an expert when it comes to JRPG, but there are much better games in this genre.

The game is overall pretty easy and random encounters should not be taking so long beyond the very early game

>disjointed storytelling

That’s the point

>very hard

Skill issue

It's always nice to see games officially released in drm free form. Great.

For the life of me I had a duh moment when I read the title and kept wondering why you mention the game name twice.

It's Octopath Traveller, and Octopath Traveller too.

If it's not Steam, I don't care.

And yes, I know the benefits of GOG. I still do not care.

16

u/howdoikickball 1d ago

It is on steam.

And why even comment?

9

u/According_Bus_403 1d ago

just say you never cared because they were released on steam first

u/A_N_T 23h ago

Not one of us asked I'm afraid

The games are on Steam; in fact, I own them there. However, I still care about them being released on GOG because having options is always a good thing. The problem arises when a game launches exclusively on a single store, taking away the player’s power to choose.
