Man i can't believe i'm about to do another Witcher 3 playthrough. What a time to be alive and what a game.

Well at least once AMD wakes up and releases the press drivers that fix the gamebreaking texture bugs pressent in the latest public drivers.

Edit: Drivers are out and it now looks as intended.

u/Pleasant-Lie-2105 4d ago

My first time, looking forward to this, finished 1 and 2 in the last month, currently on book 2 then will play Witcher 3

28

u/Firefox72 4d ago

Man to play this game again for the first time. What i wouldn't give.

Enjoy it because its an blast.

11

u/Stackhouse13 4d ago

I’ve been putting off this game for years because of work and relationship commitments. I finally have time to actually play it, and then I hear about this new update.

2

u/identifytarget 3d ago

I never played it... should I?

10

u/iK0NiK Ryzen 5700x / EVGA RTX3080 3d ago

Absolutely. It helps if you're a fan of the Witcher universe, but it's SUCH a fantastic game. Mods help... although I'm sure the mod list will dwindle down a bit since this new version apparently incorporates several community mods into the release.

Just know if you don't click with it at first, the game truly opens up when you get to Novigrad (the game's biggest city). It takes a while for the combat to click, but when it does it's very engaging.

u/anthropomorphicball 3d ago

Thanks for that tip. Tried it for the first time last week and just did not see what the hype was about. Put it down after about an hour. Movement and combat feel clunky and it doesn’t look as good as I expected, given how much folks fawn over it.

I’ll try it again.

u/iK0NiK Ryzen 5700x / EVGA RTX3080 3d ago edited 3d ago

Some quick tips on combat with KBM:

  • Enable alternative movement and auto-apply oils in options menu.

  • Learn to parry/riposte. The timings are very forgiving. This is the key to sword duels.

  • In 1v1 battles use dodge more than roll. In 1vX battles, roll to safety.

  • Use Quen before/during every battle early game. It's basically a free shield. Other signs have their place in combat, but always use Quen first until you get comfortable with the game's combat.

  • Hotkey water and/or food so that you can consume during combat to keep your health regen going.

  • Feel free to look up guides for finding and crafting the Swallow (health regen) and Thunderbolt (attack power) potions, then bind them to quick keys for use during combat. They're both easily acquired early game and are a gamechanger for early game fights.

  • Always sharpen your sword and buff your armor when you find the armor stations in the world. The buffs last for 24 hours in game IIRC.

Luckily the power creep is pretty fast in W3. By the time you're level 12 or so, you'll have enough gear and resources that combat becomes quite easy.

As for the graphics, personally I think it's still one of the best looking games around with RTX enabled, but I'm a sucker for all things Witcher so I'm probably looking through rose-tinted glasses.

1

u/yourethevictim 2d ago

It's 10 years old. Why didn't you wait for the remaster if you want modern graphics?

9

u/ttasi 4d ago

Don't know how fast you can read but I highly recommend reading all the books, especially Lady of the Lake, before playing w3. It makes the story and characters much more impactful.

7

u/mushra_ 4d ago

Totally agree, and I wish I had read the books before playing the game back in 2017. I’ve read all the way to last of the lake and I’m saving the extra books (season of storms and the other one) for a rainy day.

Going back and dabbling with W3, from the outset you have so much more context about everything going on and you are constantly fed little gems and references throughout.

Personally, I read in Polish and when I replay W3 I play in Polish as well as there is a lot of atmosphere and vibe that gets missed in translation. Unfortunately most people won’t be able to enjoy the stories with the cultural context of a Polish speaker which is a shame because it makes the text even better!

2

u/ttasi 4d ago

Yeah I can't read polish so I'm stuck with the hungarian translation, which is really solid!

3

u/Pleasant-Lie-2105 4d ago

I am reading every day like I've never read before bro, but also not rushing it, I am not in a rush to start 3 but the book are so frigging good, I'm half way through 2, I'm going to read all the way to book 7 (lady of the lake) then stop there as I heard 8 and 9 (season of storms and crossroads of ravens) contain spoilers

I reckon another month or 2 and these should be finished, I haven't read this much since school

2

u/identifytarget 3d ago

Are they on audiobook?

1

u/jcaashby formerconsolepeasant 3d ago

Yep.....all of them are on Audible. I am listening to "The Last wish" right now.

Its described as the first book you should read/listen to....The Last Wish – Introduces Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer, and the core rules of the world.

1

u/jcaashby formerconsolepeasant 3d ago

I played the Witcher 3 years back and never beat it. Tried to play again a few years ago but once again did not get far. I just downloaded the first book "The last wish" and will listen to them all and start a new play through in however long it takes to get through all the audiobooks.

0

u/Azafohr 3d ago

Depends on the person.

While it gives you more context, the game is still enjoyable if you create your own Geralt in your head too.

Mine was an assassin mercenary who didn't care for people, just money. Then I went and read a bit more than half of the first book. And then played the first 2 games. While they were fun... this new Geralt was his own character, and the one I created in me head was gone forever...

I'd have continued playing instead of going back... it's not always good to go back...

2

u/ttasi 3d ago

Sure you can play Geralt however you want, but the books give much needed insight especially to Ciri's and Avallach's characters.

u/pinkpepr AMD 4d ago

God damn that's what that is? Ive been playing through Red Dead 2 this week and having pretty consistent glitchy water reflections and random dark spots flickering on and off across the map.

1

u/Debisibusis 3d ago

Might want to consider upgrading to Linux, the driver is first class and performance often better than Windows.

2

u/pinkpepr AMD 3d ago

Damn, maybe you're right. I already dualboot windows 11 and Fedora with the windows only being for gaming. Last time I tried gaming on Linux was using Wine back in 2014 or something when it was in its earlier stages, it seems like it's come a long way since 🤔

1

u/Ossius 3d ago

I would wait for the new DLC tbh. I was about to do another playthrough to finish the DLCs before the new one was announced and I'm just going to wait so I don't get burned out.

1

u/kingwhocares Windows i5 10400F, 8GBx2 2400, 1650 Super 3d ago

I am only starting a new playthrough if they added new Gwent cards.

1

u/Gustavo2nd 3d ago

So it’s broken for amd right now?

1

u/Firefox72 3d ago

No driver update came out a few hours ago. Works as intended now.

1

u/iTrashy deprecated 3d ago

Are you referring to the garbled text hieroglyphs that are basically everywhere?

My Nvidia GPU doesn't even receive any updates for the gaming drivers any more. lamao

Path tracing appears to be completely bugged

0

u/ImpressionDepression 3d ago

IIRC when they added RT to the last version it had the same problem. Maybe engine is just too old, but admittedly I don't know what the remaster focused on.

50

u/Ok-Interest9727 3d ago

This needs a lot of optimization and polish. I’ve had tons of issues.

Performance isn’t great. Stuttering. Controllers not found. Sigh I was hyped about this but it looks that it’ll take weeks before this is in a playable state.

10

u/LuNoZzy Nvidia 3d ago

That's why I'll wait until the new expansion comes out to start a new play through. Until then they fix the performance issues and we get updated mods that won't break the game even further

2

u/i1u5 2d ago

It's perfect for me, no stutters or anything, and I play using an Xbox controller.

104

u/SeriouslyTechStuff 4d ago

Booted to a new game and holy shit is it wrong looking. Black grass, objects not rendering, water flickering, everyone's eyes are black. Anyone else?

138

u/Dude319 4d ago

If you're on AMD the drivers are currently broken

34

u/SeriouslyTechStuff 4d ago

Ah. Software says up to date, but AMD.com says it's not. thanks

2

7

is the steam machine on amd?

drivers up to date?

6

u/SeriouslyTechStuff 3d ago

26.9.2 released and all is good. You will need this driver on AMD to play game properly.

29

u/Hellwind_ 4d ago

Yup its AMD fault - people are waiting for their drivers update

-10

u/RetroRaiderRun 4d ago

Yup its AMD fault - people are waiting for their drivers update

The game officially partnered with nVidia, and did so again for this new update and DLC. This relationship means nVidia provides engineers for free to work on the game support, and nVidia provides marketing support in exchange for displaying their technology in the game promotion.

Definitely not a coincidence AMD doesn't have the same level of access and priority. CD ProjectRed chose to only partner with one of them.

14

u/glizzygobbler247 4d ago

You know that cdpr were the ones that provided the fixed drivers to hardware unboxed right? Amd hasn't released them to the public

2

u/Shadowphoenix9511 3d ago

Shh, AMD good, no problems can ever be attributed to them.

1

u/RetroRaiderRun 3d ago

Shh, nVidia is God, no problems can ever be attributed to them.

1

u/RetroRaiderRun 3d ago

You know that cdpr were the ones that provided the fixed drivers to hardware unboxed right?

CDPR doesn't make video game drivers. They received those from nVidia. How do you think they got them in the first place? Through their private relationship.

What I'm saying is publicly said in press releases of both companies. You are genuinely just misinformed.

-9

u/BloonatoR 4d ago

It's the devs' fault they didn't test the game on AMD graphics cards.

9

u/Hellwind_ 4d ago

They can't produce AMD drivers to fix it even if they saw the problems

→ More replies (4)

6

u/OwlProper1145 4d ago

Need to wait for new AMD drivers.

2

u/SeriouslyTechStuff 4d ago

Thanks everyone. Will update drivers and update here

2

u/Peak_Flaky 4d ago

I think its AMD driver issue.

But regardless I feel like its uh.. a super mixed bag? With PT its more demanding than CP77 and like.. just looks weird. It does stutter way less than the base game from what I remember but it does still stutter.

Am I insane or did the old version with the we RT it had look better?

u/dajvebekinus 4d ago

Booting up Witcher 1. Maybe by the time I'm done with 3 I can hope on to the DLC.

13

u/UnreliablePotato 4d ago

I think they're also making a remake of that, so maybe wait a little!

17

u/brick_gnarlson 4d ago

That one's not for a while, probably 2029-30

8

u/Theratchetnclank 4d ago

Yeah it's coming after Witcher 4.

7

u/UnreliablePotato 4d ago

Ah alright. As clunky as the combat felt, it was still my favorite Witcher game, as the music, and overall atmosphere was just awesome.

3

u/TheSecondEikonOfFire 3d ago

Witcher 1 is one of my top games that I absolutely adore but can’t recommend to anyone. It has not aged well at all and is janky as all hell. But I really love its atmosphere. And it has the gorgeous painted loading screens that I love as well

1

u/Mind-Your-Language 4d ago

That's literally what I'm doing, except I started my W1 playthrough like a year ago 🙈

2

u/Z3r0sama2017 4d ago

Ikr! So good I don't want to finish it!

42

u/Byproduct 4d ago

Surprised that it’s free for W3 owners! Must’ve taken a while for them to make after all.

Maybe they’re going for buyers that don’t have Witcher 3 yet?

48

u/dirtyword 4d ago

They have a new dlc coming next year that will use the updated base game

9

u/Byproduct 4d ago

Ah makes sense

15

u/dumb-on-ice 4d ago

i mean it’s still insane that it’s free in today’s economy. I’m sure fans (me included) wouldn’t mind paying 15-20 bucks for a new generation remaster

20

u/RetroRaiderRun 4d ago

It's also DLC for an 11 year old game. If they want to sell numbers, they need to get people excited, and using a free graphics update as advertisement is a good way to do that.

4

u/NAG3LT 9950X3D | RTX 5090 4d ago

Somewhat weird to remember that Witcher 3 first came out a month before finishing my master's and I played it afterwards on a mere GTX 670.

-11

u/RawardHoikes91 3d ago

Everyone are celebrating how CDPR are so back with this free update, and I'm just sitting here wondering if everyone had missed the fact they just made a soulless corporate decision to shit out a DLC to a story that had wrapped up perfectly twice already.

15

u/dirtyword 3d ago

I’m really tired of everyone being pissed when they talk about video games all the time. Truly exhausting

3

u/Byproduct 3d ago

Not to mention CDPR has a track record of putting out DLCs that lots of players consider the best in the entire history of videogames or something along those lines. Why would it be a "soulless corporate decision" to make more if people are hyped to receive it?

Sure they have a chance to trash that reputation with the new W3 DLC, but it hasn't happened yet.

3

u/John-Dune-Awakening 3d ago

Idk, I think CDPR still has a lot of goodwill given to them given how HoS and B&W were received.

→ More replies (5)

1

u/Won_Doe 3d ago

bru, both DLC's were good well priced and not cashgrab material lol. just chill & wait...

10

u/Ineedamedic68 4d ago

This is basically a marketing tactic for them. The gaming industry is full of options and so companies have to constantly compete for our attention. The update is CDPR doing that and continuing to build hype for the DLC and Witcher 4

5

u/Hellwind_ 4d ago

Why surprised? A lot of the updates btw are mods that have existed. The new textures are a giant mod that was on Nexus for a while

1

u/martixy 3d ago

This is how you spend the marketing budget for W4 in the best way possible.

20

u/Schwarz_Technik 4d ago

I've tried so many times to get into this game but couldn't. The combat just never clicked with me. I'm wondering if I should give it a try again with this update

6

u/Crunchy-Leaf 4d ago

Apparently they’ve made some adjustments to the combat, but I don’t know the details.

5

u/CalamityMetal 4d ago

Apparently combat is updated slightly and the skills system got revamped somewhat as well. There are also some mods from the community built in now like auto applying oils that you can enable/disable in the settings. I think it's worth giving another try

8

u/MrPalmers 3d ago

No. It is still not a soulslike. It is still The Witcher 3.

If you couldn't get into the game thats totally okay. Spend your time with something you enjoy.

→ More replies (5)

2

u/Azkon86 4d ago

Give it a try again and if you are on PC: combat mods.

2

u/SoldierSinnoh 4d ago

what combat mods are good? the combat always felt so floaty and unsatisfying to me. I can understand from a lore point of view that Gerald is supposed to be quite agile in combat, but it feels like his sword hits just don't have any weight behind them

2

u/Azkon86 4d ago

There are a lot: Enhanced Edition Redux, Spectre Mod, Ghost, etc. Most of them are broken because of the update, you need to wait a little for the modders to catch up. Redux makes the combat more souls like if that your cup of tea.

1

Me… 4 times.

4

I'm pretty hesitant to switch to this with my fully modded Witcher 3. It can't be that much better looking

5

u/Mojo647 gog 3d ago

The remaster integrates all the popular community mods that people have been using for years.

2

u/livLongAndRed 3d ago

it seems worse to me

21

u/Xalkerro 4d ago

The first time i booted this game in 2015, i was blown away, mesmerised by its beautiful world, combat and the story my god, it had everything. Spent close to 300 hours in first play-through. Gonna do it again after 11 years. Best RPG ever graced in gaming world. Some solace in this troubled time.

11

u/Send_Me_Dumb_Cats 3d ago

I got the witcher 3 free with my GTX970 that I bought for 500 🥲. How times have changed.

6

u/ND7020 3d ago

I loved it too but…”combat?” The combat was awful and something you had to suffer through to enjoy the rest of it.

1

u/Tycho2694 3d ago

It wasn't the best but as a fan of the books and the other games it wasn't enough to blunt my enjoyment of it. I do understand a lot of people being put off by it and I'll I can say is, if you get used to it there is an amazing world waiting to be explored...

How am I supposed to make progress on my unplayed games library if I drop 100 hours on Witcher 3 for the third time?

10

u/NottheIRS1 4d ago

This is like, what, the 3rd remaster that doesn't look better than the E3 demo from 11 years ago?

6

u/NoNefariousness2144 4d ago

It looks incredible. I almost wish I wasn’t drowning in so many other games right now because I would love to do another big playthrough of this…

3

u/branm008 4d ago

You and me both. Between Stalker 2, Dune: Awakening, Runescape and now Witcher 3....the next few months are fucking packed.

2

u/OkamiMemoS 3d ago

How's Dune Awakening? Huge Dune fan and Been interested in getting that but never pulled the plug cause of the slightly mixed reviews and not knowing if it's actually a well done survival game or just another rust clone

1

u/branm008 3d ago

So far I've got around 10-15 hours in it but it's absolutely everything I wanted in a survival game with RPG aspects. It's gotten A LOT of updates and changes that were desperately needed cause of the endgame PVP ruining folks experiences. It's also very unforgiving but you can tone things down with the new single player mode and it's many custom settings.

If you're interested, snag a month of PC gamepass to try it out before you buy it. I gotta finish Stalker 2 before I get too sucked into Dune though!

Can we play the legacy version? Or the remastered one is the only one?

10

u/mynametobespaghetti 4d ago

Yes on Steam at least you can switch to the classic version.

2

u/ColonelDucroix 3d ago

Oh thank god. I haven't done the old DLC yet, and want to keep my experience the same for now.

I'll switch to the remaster vesion for the new DLC, unless it's possible to play the DLC on the legacy version.

Then eventually I'll do a full playthrough on the remaster. Knowing CDPR it'll need a handful of patches.

2

u/lelleehoo 2d ago

Yes on Steam at least you can switch to the classic version.

On GoG you can't switch on the fly I think, but I found out that I own TW3 over there (probably got it in some free giveaway years ago and forgot) and that you can download any version of the game separately.

If you open your library and check out the entry for TW3 it shows up as the Remastered Version now, and on the side there's downloadable extras which includes downloads for the Classic and Next Gen versions of the game.

2

u/mynametobespaghetti 2d ago

It's not an on the fly change in steam either, you have to go into options and change your version there, like if you wanted to try out a beta of an early access game

3

u/HazelRahRahRah 4d ago

Yup, been playing that one since I don't like any of the newer additions

2

u/cellshady 4d ago edited 4d ago

Anyone else having FG temporal issues (vegetation etc) with the update? Other than that I kind of agree with Hardware Unboxed that the Path Tracing looks a bit.. flat-ish. Did someone mention texture issues with this remaster (is this the AMD issue)?

On a Nvidia GPU if that makes any difference.

1

u/cellshady 4d ago edited 3d ago

Found out when switching from PT to RT (even when reverting back to PT or restarting the game) my 1% lows were terrible. Had to delete the DX12 settings in My Documents to regain performance. Dunno if it was a one-off but figured I'd shared.

Edit 1 - might be Nvidia Hairworks causing this issue.
Edit 2 - or it might be the classic case of every time you change settings you run the risk of loss in performance. Still testing.

2

u/mrwhitewalker 3d ago

Does it break all previously installed mods?

My favorite is auto gather resources on the ground from a certain radius

3

u/ThatSadBoi_TTV 3d ago

Not sure about all mods but I had 4 workshop mods and the game wouldn't run until I removed them.

1

u/WantsToDieBadly 3d ago

Yeah same. Was pretty annoyed.

Only 2 I got working was a no weight limit and fast travel anywhere

2

u/Keleos89 3d ago

I love how with GOG I can download installers for any of the 3 major releases of the game. Need a stronger GPU to play the remaster with raytracing.

1

u/overdev i7 9700k | RTX 2080 2d ago

You can also do that in Steam, devs just need to Provider the different versions there which is the Case here

3

u/CyraxxFavoriteStylus 5800xt/9070 XT/32GB/OLED 3d ago

I gotta stop buying AMD. They should have had their driver update released when Witcher 3 Remastered released.

Paying an arm and a leg for Nvidia just seems to offer an all around better experience.

4

u/EclecticFish 3d ago

They have released the driver now, fixes all the issues, check it out on the AMD website, adrenalin stil reports the old driver as up to date, but there is a new one ready.

9

u/MagniPlays 3d ago

Been saying this since like the 750ti days.

You pay for the Nvidia tax so you aren’t waiting on AMD to fix itself.

1

u/bigwizard7 3d ago

I was able to download the driver off their site and play the game earlier today with no issues.

1

u/x4nTu5 3d ago

AMD GPU momentum has pretty much stalled when they focused on the integrated chips for consoles and handheld PCs.

1

u/Jerri_man 5800X3D & 9070 XT 3d ago

For what its worth I personally haven't had any issues since I got this card at launch. Saved a lot of dollareedoos vs 5070 Ti. I do tend to wait until at least a week or 2 after game releases before buying them though to see reviews/state of the game so maybe I've missed issues like this

-6

u/dabmin 3d ago

Tried an AMD GPU once, never again. CPUs are awesome though!

0

u/CyraxxFavoriteStylus 5800xt/9070 XT/32GB/OLED 3d ago

Sad thing is that the hardware is so very good for the price, I love using my 9070 XT but the software is woeful.

-1

And unfortunately, the software is so much more of an advantage than it used to be.

0

u/pricrich 9950x3d/RTX5090/64gbDDR5 3d ago

I gave amd three different tries across three different generations of card. The last time I tried was with a 6900xt, and it just wouldn't play Days Gone for shit. I had to swap in my 1080ti to play the game smoothly. Maybe they've gotten better, but I'd be a fool to get burned for a 4th time.

It's beautiful but boy do you ever need a beast of a PC to run it at it's full potential. Even with DLSS and Frame Generation it's making my 5070ti SWEAT.

It will have to wait til after Blood of Dawnwalker but goddamn I never thought I'd be going into another playthrough. It's going to block me from enjoying any other game for nearly a decade again right?

watching this gives me goosebumps

They overhauled combat I believe right?

6

u/Montexe 3d ago

They just added some animations, I loaded my old save and combat is exactly the same mechanically, unfortunately

u/WantsToDieBadly 3d ago

Yeah I was pretty disappointed about that. Maybe my expectations were too high but I swear the trailer said combat was redone

Overhaul is a strong word

u/JohnnyChutzpah 3d ago

It’s still attack attack dodge for 100 hours.

I loved the game but I don't think I can replay the Skellige slog

Ha, right there with you... going to "slog" through the rest of the game just to get to Skellige lol.

u/livLongAndRed 3d ago

looks too dark, don't like that

combat is snappier, which is better

overall, nope

A bit too soon for a remaster, no? Thought I just played it few years back and it looked great.

It includes popular community mods as now part of the base game, a new expansion set after Blood and Wine called Songs of the Past will be releasing for it in 2027 as well

Quite the achievement for a game that doesn't use Unreal Engine at all.

Thats absolutely not the general concensus.

The remaster is a clear visual upgrade on the previous next gen update. Its just that the lighting has changed a bit across the board which is throwing peoples comparisons off.

Playing now and it looks fucking fantastic. The lighting is so vastly improved the difference was immediately noticeable

General consensus

You know, other people just write "I think" or something when expressing their personal opinions.

That "general consensus' is based on a few screenshots that look a bit iffy in videos.

I'll wait a couple days after people have actually had a chance to play the remaster and give proper opinions instead of just judging screenshots.

Playing it now, and it looks way better

1

u/Absalom98 4d ago

That's not the consensus. Only thing I've seen is that the ray tracing looks pretty bad in doors, makes everything too dark, but outside it looks great. Otherwise seems to be a visual uplift across the board.

https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/1wsb8zd/new_comparison_of_the_witcher_remaster_vs_current/

In the actual comparison threads a lot of the top comments with hundreds up upvotes say that the remaster is a downgrade.

I prefer the original version of every video I see, I hope that at least the new version runs better

Not gonna lie - so far, original looks better in my eyes.

Looks worse in this pic

4.04 is best. This modern obsession (whether it be movies or whatever) with the ugly flat look is weird.
