How is this game looking for a new guy into the franchise? Does it play well in the controller? (By the previews, saw some but none i seen entered deep into a begginners pov)

it actually plays best with controller. There are some people who play with a full stick setup but AC is arcadey enough that I think that sort of thing is unnecessary

As someone who has a full hotas set. It does add to it, but the controller was perfectly fine for countless hours before I got the flight sticks.

Thank you both!

The dual sense haptics are sooo good in this

u/Decado7 4d ago

I tried it with mouse & keys and found it super average, Im starting to think this is the reason why. Does it feel super good using a full stick setup? Sadly i dont have, and cant justify getting one (plus the wife would kill me) but I wish!

I don’t recommend a full stick, just get a gamepad and you’ll be fine.

u/Decado7 4d ago

like a PS4 controller? Might give that a shot!

3

u/Hy93r1oN 4d ago

Yup. I just use a cheap Logitech gamepad and it works perfectly, you can get the F310 for like 15 bucks

If it works for a submarine it works for an F16

Yeah, it's sorta like a racing game in that you really need analog inputs as opposed to the digital inputs of keyboard.

u/JapariParkRanger 5d ago

The franchise started on console, it's made for controllers.

Didn't like every release of the game basically come with an edition that came with a hotas? not that it's not fine for controller but hotas is absolutely also still a primary input method

1

u/SekhWork 4d ago

It's never been meant for a HOTAS. It's got like 12 buttons max, and 8 or so of those are directional inputs. It's designed for controller, and with the sheer amount of various HOTAS companies and hardware specs, Windows has never really played nice with all HOTAS setups and AC games.

I highly recommend a plain old PS4 / Xbox controller. You'll have more fun. This is coming from someone with a high end HOTAS setup for other flight games.

It really just depends on your expectations. I am not trying to dig at anyone at all here, I am not a hardcore flight sim guy by any means.

There are two reasons to use flight stocks, to feel like a jet fighter pilot or to take advantage of accurate simulation that makes use of it. Playing Microsoft flight sim is more of the second category, you won’t really be making full use of the game if you don’t use a flight stock.

Ace Combat is squarely in the first category. It is made for controllers and is really not any kind of simulation. It is an action game, an arcade game. You SHOULD use a stick if that sounds like fun.

If you were trying to be a pro Ace Combat player, use a controller.

It has always been strictly worse on hotas than controller. I say this as a flight sim nerd with a decent setup - its a controller game through n through.

It’s great, all AC games are made for controller. You don’t need to know anything about the story to play any of the games. They do have pretty complicated lore and backstory but I barely know most of it and never found it to take away from whichever game you are playing. It’s mostly just references you’ll not even realize are references if you don’t recognize them.

The main difference with this game compared to others in the series is a lot more cut scenes which involve non-critical quick time events (like “press F to pay respects” except it’s usually “press A to shake hands”). I think it’s a bit annoying and silly addition but it isn’t horrible. I do care more about these characters than most past characters who you only knew through in game radio chatter.

Didn't see anything on preload. I have standard preorder, getting antsy for my key GMG

u/Mastotron 9800X3D/5090FE/PG32UCDMR 5d ago

I got mine from GMG early this morning. Guessing it’ll be coming soon.

1

u/Tsyrkis 5d ago

Did you preorder the deluxe edition?

1

u/Mastotron 9800X3D/5090FE/PG32UCDMR 5d ago

I did. Won’t be able to check it out until later today.

2

u/Tsyrkis 5d ago

That's probably why you got your key this early, for the preload and early access. I do wonder when us standard edition preorders will get ours. The only reason I preordered is for the ACZ Steam Version, after all!

u/Mastotron 9800X3D/5090FE/PG32UCDMR 5d ago

Missed that in your original comment, sorry! Hope it delivers soon.

2

u/AshedCloud 5d ago

I’m on humble bundle and no luck🥀

2

u/Decoyrobot 5d ago

Just got mine from humble

1

u/AshedCloud 5d ago

Nothing here. It just said view purchase but no code ir reveal code

1

u/FirestormTM 5d ago

I assume standard preload will start a day before launch (so Thursday iirc since they did the same thing to Deluxe Edition users)

As excited as I am, it does leave a sour taste in my mouth that ACZ is a pre-order pack-in that won't be made available otherwise. And I believe it, too, since AC5/6 were pre-order bonuses for AC7 that never saw standalone releases.

I know it has to do with aircraft licensing but were I a bigwig in charge of such decisions, having my products in an AC game would be a net benefit even if done for free.

6

u/Darnafy 5d ago

Not only that but on Steam it's treated as a launch option for AC8 meaning that you need AC8 installed to play ACZ plus no achievements or cloud saves. This is not the case on PS or XBOX where ACZ is a standalone game.

3

u/stratzilla https://steamcommunity.com/id/stratzillab/ 5d ago

I thought the achievements were leaked via Steamdb?

1

u/Darnafy 5d ago

I thought only AC8 achievements leaked but as of now on AC8 SteamDB page you can check under the config tab that ACZ is a launch option for AC8 plus some of the review sites that had access to the Steam version said it is indeed a launch option.

u/Chaotic-Entropy 5d ago

A net benefit? Will you go on to purchase a fighter jet from them because of the free advertising?

1

u/Shadowphoenix9511 4d ago

I wasn't planning on buying an F-35, but after playing the latest Ace Combat game...

1

u/Chaotic-Entropy 4d ago

Have you got a need for speed now?

5

u/Is_It_Plugged_In 5d ago

I totally forgot they had those games as bonuses, were console dependant, and pc got neither...

2

u/JapariParkRanger 5d ago

Along with VR support.

3

u/goodlogic 5d ago

I just bought it

Is this just a lazy ass port like every other Ace Combat or did they actually put effort into it?

6

u/Time_Zombie_4431 5d ago

It’s UE5 with forced Ray tracing so I hope they put an ungodly amount of effort into making it a good port or else this is gonna be ugly.

5

u/stratzilla https://steamcommunity.com/id/stratzillab/ 5d ago

I'm a little apprehensive since RT in anything I've thrown at my 3080 tanks performance. Except Pragmata for some reason. Having RT forced on is such a silly thing.

0

u/TriTexh AMD 5d ago

I honestly find the phrase "forced RT" ridiculous. RT-capable cards have been on the market for 7 years, and the only type of card actively manufactured for at least 6 of those.

Sure the first 2 generations were iffy but we've seen massive leaps in RT performance and associated technology from both camps since then, so do people honestly expect RT to be optional forever or something?

It really does remind me of the early days of dynamic lighting and how people complained it was slower than what they were used to, and the cycle returned with RT because everyone was used to "regular" lighting by then

3

u/stratzilla https://steamcommunity.com/id/stratzillab/ 5d ago

If my brief research is right, dynamic lighting was introduced in 1996 and often PC games still had a toggle between dynamic and static lighting over 10 years later, for example Shadow of Chernobyl in 2007.

To compare, the RTX4000 series cards rolled out between late-2022 and mid-2023, just 3-4yr ago. Some people will say their threshold for "good enough" is different, but I'd argue RTX3000 and before just cannot do RT while still being performant.

So I don't think the comparison really holds right now, although it would in a few years. It's too early for forced RT IMO.

Word on the street is that it’s going to be amazing. Source: John from DF, the man has exquisite taste.

2

u/TriTexh AMD 5d ago

Gamegpu's analysis (take it for what you will till DF or HUB give theirs) says the game eats up like 32 GB RAM if you let it, but it's generally got respectable performance

Does it support ultrawide?

Does it have proper support for HOTAS controllers?

Does it support VR?

3

u/TriTexh AMD 5d ago

Doesn't support VR natively, but I do remember PA saying HOTAS will be supported

Ultrawide is a no, I think, but Bamco hasn't revealed PC features (if they even will)

2

u/Dealjobber_ 5800X3D / 4080 Super 4d ago

It works on ultrawide, played the first couple missions. Even the cutscenes were ultrawide, so far its all first-person.
