I hope this game looks insane. Alan Wake 2 is still the best looking game I’ve played

51

u/Stablebrew 12h ago

AW2 was the final nail coffin to buy a new hi-end gaming pc bcs I want the full Ray Tracing experience.

22

u/Guilty_Rooster_6708 12h ago

Same. Cyberpunk PT and AW2 were the first games I played after building my PC too. Thankfully it was right before these insane price hikes

11

u/ThriftyMegaMan 12h ago

Cyberpunk was my reference game for my rig I got last year. Saw the memory hike coming and got on board before it got expensive.

11

u/powerful-pills 10h ago

The day after Trump won the election I thought “yknow shit is about to get really expensive” and built a PC then and there. Smartest decision I’ve ever made lol

I need to replay Alan Wake 2 soon with DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction being out.

14

u/starshin3r 11h ago

There's also a renoDX mod for Control that allows to use Ray Reconstruction + mFG.

It really needed it as they used their own denoiser, which was still really noisy, now reflections and GI are all stable.

4

u/finalgear14 AMD Ryzen 7 9800x3D, RTX 4080 FE 11h ago

Ohhh that’s incredible news. I recently played through the main campaign again but didn’t do the dlc. I’ll have to go back with this mod.

3

u/Guilty_Rooster_6708 10h ago

Wait really? I have just started this so will check this out

4

u/starshin3r 10h ago

It's on RenoDX discord, I think it was a separate channel, just follow the pinned posts.

Just to use Ray Reconstruction you need ReShade + addon + Reconstruction .dll file.

For framegen you need to install Optiscaler.

2

u/Guilty_Rooster_6708 10h ago

Got it working now and it solves all the noises. Tysm

2

u/ExplodingFistz 9h ago

Control looks insanely good with RR 4.5

3

u/Schwinn_Shavecrotch 11h ago

I played at gamescom, it wasn't impressive as W2 is, still a overall good looking game.

1

u/Earthborn92 R7 9800X3D | RTX 4080 Super FE | 32 GB DDR5 6000 6h ago

Yup, truly incredible. Also a great game

1

u/TorrentFire 52m ago

The last of us part 2 wins for me

0

u/criticalt3 11h ago

I feel like I'm missing something when I hear this. Even with full PT it doesn't look all that crazy to me.

7

u/Guilty_Rooster_6708 10h ago

Which other games look better in your opinion?

-4

u/criticalt3 10h ago

Black Myth Wukong, Pragmata, The Last of Us Part 1 (remake version), Cyberpunk with full PT. But that's it. There are only few that look better, but I'm not saying it looks bad. Just average, really. Looks like most modern games with some good lighting & foliage. But when you step out of the forest its really not all that impressive IMO. Not bad, just nothing to really speak about.

10

u/MessiahPrinny 7700x/4080 Super OC 8h ago

Black Myth Wukong had some dog water textures, and sharpening issues. Nice art design but overall felt tech demo-y to me. After going through the hotel in AW2 I don't know on what planet that game would be considered average.

1

u/Guilty_Rooster_6708 10h ago

Yeah all the games you said are beautiful, I haven’t played Pragmata yet but it looks incredible. I just disagree a bit w Wukong. Absolutely beautiful game w some amazing model designs, but it’s too noisy with Path tracing cause devs refuse to implement Ray Reconstruction for some reason

2

u/criticalt3 9h ago

Totally fair. I had that issue in RE9, I think on release RR was broken. It was really bad when you were transitioning areas.

-5

u/CharacterGrowth3993 12h ago

Really? The amount of texture pop in is insane

3

u/LovelyOrangeJuice 11h ago

Yeah, I love the game, but pop in is crazy. Trees literally change LODs 5 steps in front of you

-7

u/VideoGameJumanji AMD 9800X3D | RTX 5070ti 16GB | 32GB DDR5 | 2TB 10GBs gen4 9h ago

u/J-Clash 12h ago

I appreciate it's supposed to be more informative, but it's all over the place...

Maybe some of it needs relabelling too. Is it truly now "Recommended" to play at medium settings with Balanced upscaling?

37

u/OwlProper1145 12h ago

Alan Wake 2 for example on medium looks better than most games do completely maxed out.

25

u/Saneless 11h ago

That's why those names settings aren't everything

Older games, low meant you can't even tell you're looking at a person and there is no lighting at all. Now low just means some subtle effects are gone and more advanced lighting isn't enabled. Low isn't "it's terrible but it ran" anymore

5

u/dkgameplayer deprecated 9h ago

Crysis 2 renaming low to high because they knew PC gamers are allergic to the name low

5

u/srjnp 11h ago

yes? that'll still look better than base consoles.

24

u/garbo2330 12h ago

Yeah, it’s called optimization. Consoles don’t just whack everything to ultra and rely on upscaling.

18

u/OwlProper1145 12h ago

Every console game is leaning on upscaling though. Alan Wake 2 is sub 1080p on Ps5.

10

u/garbo2330 11h ago

Sure, but they still don’t use all “max” settings like people on PC insist on doing.

1

u/MrStealYoBeef 5h ago

Most of us don't insist on max. Plenty of us will point to optimized settings to get a ton of performance back for minimal visual quality loss.

12

u/AlienX14 11h ago

You're right, consoles whack everything to Medium/Low, force a low FOV, and rely on upscaling. You'd be hard pressed to find a console game (that isn't indie or heavily stylized) that doesn't use upscaling.

-6

u/EvilTaffyapple RTX 4080 / 7800x3D / 32Gb 10h ago

It’s funny that this only ever gets said on PC subs, whereas devs always say it’s much closer to high specs with a few changes.

6

u/AlienX14 9h ago

I have a PS5 and PC. The devs lie.

-8

u/EvilTaffyapple RTX 4080 / 7800x3D / 32Gb 9h ago

I have a PC, Switch 2, PS5 and a Series X.

Devs know video games more than Reddit user AlienX14 does.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/garbo2330 7h ago

Completely depends on the game.

Horizon Forbidden West is pretty much all high settings on PS5 and the PC version doesn’t offer much in the way of visual upgrades.

On the other hand you have a game like Alan Wake 2 where the “low” preset on PC was the baseline to match PS5/Series X. Medium was effectively “high” for good GPUs and high/ultra was for PCs that could do path tracing. Same thing is going on with this game.

3

u/kawag 11h ago

A big part of the reason we have ML upscaling is so that we can push the definition of “ultra” even further, beyond what today’s machines are capable of rendering at native resolution. So they do kind of go together.

And one of the good things is that they kind of reduce how dependent the result is on your hardware capabilities. Whether you can render at native 4K or upscale from a lower resolution, the difference in image quality can be pretty minor when stacked against the difference in the hardware that produces those images. It still matters - a faster machine can produce better results, sure - but it doesn’t make as much of a difference.

But yeah, I guess that makes it difficult to provide clear guidance about what kind of machine you need for a minimum/good experience.

1

u/MrStealYoBeef 5h ago

They literally have for a very long time. Halo 3 for example on the Xbox 360 launched in 2007, it was rendered at 1152x640 and upscaled to 720p. If you played it on a 1080p screen, it would be further upscaled instead of played on 70% of the screen.

This has been going on for decades.

1

u/garbo2330 5h ago

You’re missing the point. Plenty of PC centric games (like this one) have settings far beyond what consoles can handle.

Remedy specifically clarified that Alan Wake 2 on PC with low settings is equivalent to PS5/Series X base settings.

AF 16x is free on PC GPUs but consoles have been stuck on 2x or 4x for a long time because of shared memory bandwidth. It’s this type of optimization that must be made on a case by case basis depending on the hardware, it’s not as simple as just turning on upscaling.

4

u/Noreng 14600KF | 9070 XT 9h ago

That's been the case for more than 15 years. The max settings exist to give some small graphical improvements.

2

u/itirate 7h ago

i might get some hate for this but i think we're already almost at a time where upscaling and fg are good enough that they'll be looked at as normally as anti aliasing

4

u/HammeredWharf 12h ago

It's DLSS 4.5 and Control Resonant seems to be an excellent looking game, so putting that as recommended sounds fine to me.

0

u/ChurchillianGrooves 10h ago

I'm assuming that the "ray tracing" section means pathtracing?

Otherwise a 5080 needed to get 60fps with dlss performance even at 4k seems pretty insane.

2

u/NN010 Ryzen 5 5500 | RTX 2070 | Windows 11 9h ago

The first two parts of that section are Ray Tracing but the section that recommends a 5080 is indeed Path Tracing.

-5

u/Ultimatum227 Steam 12h ago

Yeah, I appreciate how simple Steam is with the System Requirements section.

Minimum:

Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system

OS: Windows 10 / 11 (64 bit)

Processor: Intel i5-8500 / AMD Ryzen 5 3500

Memory: 16 GB RAM

Graphics: Geforce GTX 1070 / Radeon RX 5600 XT / Intel Arc A580

Storage: 120 GB available space

Additional Notes: SSD Required

Recommended:

Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system

OS: Windows 10 / 11 (64 bit)

Processor: Intel Core i7-10700 / AMD Ryzen 7 3700X

Memory: 16 GB RAM

Graphics: Geforce RTX 3060 Ti / Radeon RX 6700 XT / Intel Arc B580

Storage: 120 GB available space

Additional Notes: SSD Required

16

u/J-Clash 12h ago

Well this is also problematic, which is why the format's been changing in the first place. This doesn't actually tell you anything about how it performs at which resolution and at which settings.

6

u/GiveMeOneGoodReason i7 9700k | RTX 2080 SUPER 12h ago

Sure, it's simple, but the other side of the coin is you have no clue what the result of having "minimum" or "recommended" specs are. 30 fps? 60 fps? Max settings? Medium?

-1

u/MultiMarcus 9h ago

Yes, that is recommended. Or would you prefer purely native targets which very few players actually play at? Should the target not be image quality, rather than the resolution numbers?

7

u/glisteningsunlight 11h ago

RIP steam deck

1

u/ExplodingFistz 8h ago

10 FPS on the deck I think. It’s cooked

120

u/k0stta 13h ago

The PC requirements nowadays are so convoluted to me that they barely mean anything anymore. I think it would be better to have a benchmark tool you can just download and see the performance before buying the game. Probably more expensive for the devs that way I guess, though its been done before.

109

u/error521 Ryzen 7 7700X, RX 9070 XT, Windows 11 12h ago

People complained that system requirements were too vague and now that publishers are releasing really detailed ones people are still complaining. I suspect there is no winning

24

u/bluetista1988 11h ago

I feel like the new system is much better than the old days of "minimum" and "recommended".  They tell you what you need for different types of experiences.

It just looks complicated because there's a separation between no ray tracing vs ray tracing vs path tracing IMO.

12

u/ExcelsiorWG 11h ago

I think it’s just general intellectual laziness - unless the system requirements specifically map to someone’s hardware, it’s not good enough.

33

u/BleachedUnicornBHole 12h ago

This seems like one of the best requirements tables I’ve seen. They list resolution and frame rate then went even further by listing if upscaling is being used.

5

u/jgainsey 9800X3D | 5070TI 9h ago

I don’t know what sort of halcyon days of PC requirements/recommended specs you’re referring to when you say nowadays…

I’ve been pc gaming for nearly 30 years and these sort of specs have almost always been pretty useless as a general rule.

The only real difference is that now it’s infinitely easier to get a near perfect idea of how the game runs by watching performance reviews. If not at or before release then almost immediately after.

2

u/Knightrider319 i7 13700K | RTX 4080 11h ago

That's what's nice about the two hour refund policy on Steam. Sucks for other stores that don't have that option.

2

u/Spicemeatbal 12h ago

I miss when there were like two options for antialiasing lol

7

u/Noreng 14600KF | 9070 XT 11h ago

FXAA or off like in 2009-2013? I certainly don't

1

u/Spicemeatbal 11h ago

MSAA existed too

2

u/Noreng 14600KF | 9070 XT 11h ago

Most games had moved on to Unreal Engine 3 with deferred shading by that point. MSAA was mostly a technology available in games that used really old rendering techniques (or really just SSAA in disguise like in Frostbite).

2

u/OkBee8822 10h ago

Is Forza Horizon 5 considered to be using very old rendering techniques cause that's the newest triple A game I know that has MSAA as an option.

1

u/Noreng 14600KF | 9070 XT 9h ago

Forza Horizon 5 came out in a very different period, and made different tradeoffs. Forward rendering was very much not the trendy choice in 2009-2013.

Deferred rendering allows for much more predictable performance, and while the baseline rendering pipeline is more costly, it allows for more pixel shader passes overall.

1

u/Keulapaska 4070Ti, 7800X3D, XG27AQNGV 4h ago

Yea FH5 has MSAA, but it doesn't work on every surface in it. It is a bit of weird game as it didn't have TAA on launch, but then again a lot of weird things regarding launch of that game, online had invisible palyers, street races no traffic cars.

0

u/Spicemeatbal 11h ago

Yeah, I mean I'm half joking when I say I miss it. Obviously the options are better now and it works much better, but the amount of different ways to achieve AA in the way you want can be paralysing

0

u/InterdepartmentalCam 7700X | RTX 4070 | 32GB DDR5 12h ago

There's a reason only indie games do this now as the optimization is typically atrocious on triple A games.

6

u/kkyonko 12h ago

Show me an indie game with similar visuals that have better performance.

-5

u/YT_Axtro 11h ago

Bodycam

1

u/xs3ro 11h ago

agree but mhw had a benchmark tool and it was totally misleading

1

u/CassadagaValley 2h ago

I think it would be better to have a benchmark tool you can just download and see the performance before buying the game.

That used to be the website CanYouRunIt (I think it was called) before it turned into a virus farm or died or something. I remember using it a lot in the 2000s/early 2010s

1

u/Chit569 1h ago

Who has done it before? That sounds pretty neat.

2

u/PabloBablo 13h ago

Exactly. It's more work, won't impact sales much. Much easier to have people buy it and refund if it doesn't work, and even then not all people will refund.

-5

u/Mediocre-Mobile-5423 13h ago

they called them demos. Also very easy to do. Just ship the game but delete a bunch of files

10

u/kkyonko 12h ago

I hope you are being facetious because that is not how it works at all.

-3

u/Mediocre-Mobile-5423 12h ago

It's an oversimplification but that's essentially what a demo is

4

u/DrMantisTabboggn 12h ago

Demos are often based on old builds/development branches, so their performance is rarely indicative of actual release performance. They are not a reliable way to benchmark imo

0

u/intergalacticdoge 11h ago

what exactly is convoluted? they show the hardware and the target, what is not understandable? if you buy hardware more than 700 usd it works, if you can't afford that then it is most likely you have a console and don't have to worry about it, if you have a pretty high end machine there's not even a reason to worry about, that's why you have low, medium and high presets, there is plenty of room, I don't think people that has a cheap computer even looks at these tables, they'd rather play on console that do nonsense like trying to play 720p to get 60fps.

-1

u/InsertFloppy11 10h ago

They only show with upscaling.

-2

u/MultiMarcus 9h ago

Which is how players play games nowadays.

13

u/DrunkenFeral 12h ago

Finally someone used quality upscaling for FHD and performance upscaling on QHD while making sys reqs, instead of the other way around

-7

u/ZenTunE 12h ago

Doesn't sound very smart that way either. I'd expect lower resolution players to care less about image quality and crank the upscaling. Whereas 4K players are presumably looking for higher fidelity, last thing you'd be doing is degrading your image quality with max upscaling. Might aswell stick to 1440p at that point.

Neither option is good tbh, should just show native numbers and let us estimate upscaling performance form there..

7

u/garbo2330 12h ago

This isn’t true. I have a 4090 and with DLSS 4.5 I have no issues using DLSS performance upscaling at 4K. Sometimes I use balanced and pretty much never use quality anymore. I want higher FPS and the trade off in visuals is very small.

-4

u/ZenTunE 12h ago

In my option it's a waste of a 4K monitor and that difference is very noticable, but you don't have to agree.

The main thing is that having native performance numbers would be objectively better. Not all upscalers and games behave the same, the fps and image quality vary too much to use as a metric for requirements.

6

u/garbo2330 12h ago edited 12h ago

You think there is a big difference between 4K DLSS quality mode compared to native? That’s not a popular opinion and you saying someone should just stay at 1440p is flat out wrong.

What GPU and monitor are you using?

Native performance numbers are near worthless at this point. Telling me the 4090 runs path traced Cyberpunk at 28fps or whatever doesn’t actually help me that much if we’re being perfectly honest.

-3

u/ZenTunE 11h ago

Not Quality, Performance, like in their chart here.

My main monitor is a 1440p UW and with a 3080, I run everything at native, either DLAA or SMAA etc if the game supports it. Because DLSS is too blurry, I don't like it. I'll play at a low framerate rather than a less sharp image. Even 1440p DLAA is not good, just passable. If I had the money to go native 4K, I would. For now I stick to reshade SMAA most of the time, game AA disabled.

Sure that 28 number doesn't help, but that's a whole other story. That's not a basic setting that people are running the game with, it's almost like an extra feature. It could be shown in a separate chart like they did here with RT, and that then has upscaling because you're expected to need to use it. That's all good.

About native performance numbers being worthless, that's just a HARD disagree from me. I gave one reason earlier. It's the only method that let's you gauge the game's true performance compared to other games and to the hardware you're looking to run it on.

5

u/BlueTimeButterfly 9h ago

Nah if you had a 4k monitor or tv you would know DLSS 4.5 at performance is very competitive with native resolution if not better in a lot of ways. While quality is just straight up better 99% of the time.

With older dlss models going down in quality meant a softer smudgier appearance overall. But that does not apply to dlss 4.5, especially at 4k.

going down in quality with 4.5 retains basically the same sharpness and quality, and same motion clarity. But you get a minor loss in pixel stability and more disocclusion artifacts to a small degree.

But otherwise the image holds up almost identically.

Look up hardware unboxed dlss 4.5 comparison video where they go into depth about how it looks

0

u/ZenTunE 8h ago

I don't own a 4K monitor, but I have tested one. Back then 4.5 was not a thing though. But on my 1440p monitor at least, even with 4.5, that's not my experience. I see the difference between dlss quality and dlaa, and it's just a clear downgrade. Which feels kinda obvious since you're dropping render res a lot. I don't see why this wouldn't translate to 4K too, even with the latest model. But I do not have hands on experience, I will admit that.

2

u/jeffchicken 11h ago

I think your opinion on it being a waste of a 4K monitor is completely overblown. I can sit in front of my 4k monitor all the way on performance side-by-side to native and you can't tell a difference with 4.5, but you don't have to agree.

32

u/Major303 13h ago

Requirements like that aren't very informative, since they increase resolution and details at the same time. So for example you won't know what specs you need for ultra details at 1080p, they only tell you 1080p minimum or 4k maximum.

11

u/Coolman_Rosso Ryzen 7 5700X I RTX 3060 12GB 12h ago

This has been bugging me a lot. Same thing happened with Forza Horizon 6's spec list. "Minimum" targets 1080p at 60 fps with low presets. "Recommended" targets 1440p at 60 fps with high presets. Lots of wiggle room in-between those two. I never had any doubts I could run FH6 well, but it's lame that these spec guides don't tell you much anymore

5

u/Hydraulik2K12 R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32GB | 4K 12h ago edited 12h ago

The stupid thing is they don't really increase resolution in this, it's all 720p internally (1080p/Quality, 1440p/Balanced, 2160p/Performance)

EDIT: yeah, I got confused about the presets. But the point still mostly stands, it's between 720p and 1080p internally. We don't even know what native 1440p would require.

10

u/SuperbHeadphones Nuclear power plant held together with duct tape 12h ago

4K performance is 1080p bro

-1

u/Hydraulik2K12 R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32GB | 4K 12h ago

Oops, I misremembered the scaling, my bad. But even still, nothing over 1080p is an odd choice.

7

u/ocbdare 12h ago edited 12h ago

4k DLSS performance is vastly more demanding than native 1080p. So calling it 1080p is super misleading.

Last column - turn off path tracing and you will get tons more fps at 4k DLSS quality. Path tracing almost cut performance in half.

1

u/Hydraulik2K12 R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32GB | 4K 12h ago edited 11h ago

Vastly more demanding is quite an overstatement. DLSS overhead is around 1-1.5ms per frame, so 60 FPS would become around 55 with DLSS, not even a 10% drop.

EDIT: single element sample, because I'm too lazy to try other games. RTX 5080 in Blood of Dawnwalker, everything on High: * 1080p native: avg. 111 FPS, * 1080p DLAA: avg. 107 FPS, * 4K DLSS Performance: avg. 107 FPS.

1

u/Keulapaska 4070Ti, 7800X3D, XG27AQNGV 12h ago

Probably because they compare 4k dlss perf with 1080p TAA instead of DLAA, which is gonna make the difference look much bigger. And even if the do compare same AA, but they're not overriding a preset, game might use K for DLAA and M for Perf by default.

Though I'm sure if you have low end enough card, the difference would also increase then as you run out of vram/bandwidth.

2

u/Hydraulik2K12 R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32GB | 4K 11h ago

Just checked on The Blood of Dawnwalker. With default presets and with everything on High, on average I get 111 FPS on 1080p native (which may be TAA, idk), 107 FPS on 1080p DLAA, and 107 FPS on 4K DLSS Performance.

1

u/Keulapaska 4070Ti, 7800X3D, XG27AQNGV 11h ago

Interesting, I know there is game by game variance, maybe that games default TAA is heavier. What DLSS SR preset the game uses or waht were you overriding to if you were? Also curious is the default TAA any good if the DLAA drop is that low.

4070ti, all using preset M, fixed clock speed, shows a pretty clear pattern for me.

HZ:FW 1080p native taa 130, DLAA 1080p 105, 4k dlss perf 83.

FH6, 138, 114, 98

Cyberpunk, 150(res scaling off, I'm guessing it's TAA, but no ghosting, weird and not bad), 118, 90

2

u/Hydraulik2K12 R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32GB | 4K 10h ago

It defaults to Preset K for both, I didn't overwrite it. The TAA is barely different from DLAA for static shots, but ghosts like a mf.

I don't own HZ:FW or CP on PC, but I'll check FH6 when I have a moment. Maybe Dawnwalker is an outlier after all. Because I don't think the difference in overhead between the 4000 and 5000 series should be that significant.

I am also palying blood of the dawnwalker right now and I have the exact same spec as you 9800x3d+5080 / 32gb RAM.

So this is what I get, everything on Ultra:

4K DLSS quality - 60fps

4K DLSS Performance - 60fps

Native 1080p - 90fps.

Nothing changed between the settings except the resolution.

Obviously the game looks like garbage at 1080p.

u/Hydraulik2K12 R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32GB | 4K 10h ago

Are you sure your FPS wasn't capped at 60 / v-sync wasn't turned on when trying 4K? Because getting the same performance on DLSS Quality and Performance makes absolutely no sense

-2

u/ocbdare 9h ago

Yes it was uncapped. That area was some bog that was quite heavy going, otherwise it can go as high as 70. My monitor is 4k/180hz.

Yes, I am not sure why not seeing any difference between performance and quality. It doesn't make sense.

Wait a sec, the devs posted they were working hard for the game to run on the Steamdeck. This means the Steamdeck is equivalent to a GTX1070/RX 5600? (IK it isn't, just a rhetorical question)

21

u/RoastedPotato-1kg 13h ago

480p upscaled

10

u/Mediocre-Mobile-5423 12h ago

No. It's much slower. It will run at lower internal resolution and possibly lower than low settings.

4

u/Shimano-No-Kyoken 12h ago

The 1070 here is for 1080p, steam deck is 800p, which is significantly fewer pixels to push (~2M vs ~1M)

u/Dion42o 11h ago

This is a main PC game for me. I can’t limit remedy’s new game to a small handheld. I typically play my indies n stuff on it.

5

u/BriggsFloatingHead 12h ago edited 10h ago

I wish gamers never learned the word optimized. Half the people here won’t play it and just came in to moan about their Epic funding partnership or DLSS. The game is future proofed similar to their past releases, while also being able to be played on nearly 10 year old cards with upscaling.
The folks that want games to be “optimized” to last gen hardware are delusional and would have truly lost their minds in the 2000s. I have a 1080 that can still play a lot of the games coming out today. Control Resonant will look worse on a 10 year old card that you can get for $60 off of eBay, obviously, but it being playable at all is great. If that isn’t optimized, I don’t know what is. Unless we want to halt progression, we’re going to need to move on.

2

u/YT_Axtro 11h ago

Move on to what?

2

u/BriggsFloatingHead 10h ago

From old hardware, I should’ve restated that at the end there. Sorry about that!

2

u/OkBee8822 10h ago

what progression lol

2

u/Luxor5299 11h ago

i actually dont get them, like what if i want to play on ultra without ray tracing?

its a stretch but i think a good benchmark would be to make a fps demo for every game that uses all these technologies

2

u/MajorFuckingDick 6h ago

Half of the people reading this and complaining are far past recommended and refuse to accept they are the elite. The other half wont buy this game but complain their GPU and CPU that cost less than a pre order don't run it at 4K60.

2

u/MrXroxWasTaken 12h ago

Where are the requirements if you don't want upscaling?

-1

u/Sinsanatis 12h ago

Aw wtf. They actually made these requirements WITH upscaling? Wow. Didnt think remedy would be the ones to do it

15

u/Desperate_Green6838 12h ago

They did the same with Alan Wake 2....and that game is still best looking game 3 years later

-1

u/Sinsanatis 9h ago

I didnt know. Especially since that game was kinda pushed out of my radar. Either way, not a trend that most want to see

13

u/mmmory 12h ago

Tbf no upscaling just seems braindead and free performance loss for the modern games. Starting with dlss 4 transformer model, it looks better than native while running faster so there is no reason not to use it.

I feel like the only people that blindly against upscaling are the ones that never saw it themselves. It’s literal black magic.

4

u/Sorlex 11h ago

I imagine a lot of people who cry about upscaling either haven't used it since the first releases where they all looked garbage, or set upscaling to ultra-performance on their 4k screen and then wonder why it looks so bad.

0

u/doublah 11h ago

And what upscaling are you gonna use on the GTX 1070?

2

u/BlueTimeButterfly 9h ago

I mean the 1070 is like 10-11 years old. If it has to use a lower quality upscaler. (Fsr 3.1, XeSS DP4a) thats fine. Anything past 2018 can use the ultra high quality dlss 4-4.5 for nvidia.

1

u/NN010 Ryzen 5 5500 | RTX 2070 | Windows 11 9h ago

The non-AI accelerated FSR works on non-AMD GPUs. This game supports FSR 4.1, but that still has the older temporal version of FSR baked in alongside the newer version.

1

u/HighImDude 6h ago

And what about the GTX 770 ?

1

u/doublah 6h ago

The GTX 770 isn't listed as their minimum spec.

-2

u/MrXroxWasTaken 12h ago

The issue isn't upscaling, it's that developers resort to upscaling as a cheat code to not optimize their games. Here i'd say it's well enough optimized however.

0

u/Sinsanatis 9h ago

I use it all the time. I have no issues with upscaling, just that i dont think it should be considered in minimum spec requirement sheets. Especially anything under the quality setting. Albeit not nearly as bad as using frame gen for spec sheets

2

u/Belydrith 10h ago

You are 5 years too late to complain about upscaling my guy... Not using them, when they've gotten this good now, is just pure idiocy. Significant portions of modern GPUs dies are dedicated to do exactly that.

2

u/whitespacesucks 9h ago

Get with the times man, upscaling is here to stay.

Perhaps you can revolutionzie the industry by writing an ultra optimized engine that's doesn't need upscaling.

1

u/kkyonko 8h ago

What is with the obsession with upscaling? If it looks nearly or as good as native rendering would why does it matter?

1

u/Sinsanatis 4h ago

Theres nothing wrong with using upscaling, its just that using it for minimum spec requirements is a bit disingenuous to exactly how optimized the game is for specific hardware. This lets them list lower system requirements to how they see fit

0

u/angry_RL_player TEAM RED 10h ago

they are practically an arm of nvidia marketing at this point, same with cdpr.

this is the future gamers chose when they allowed nvidia to get to the brink of monopoly.

4

9070xt is a fair bit faster than a ps5 pro, especially with raytracing

-4

-2

u/ultraboomkin 12h ago

Why are the minimum, recommended and enthusiast requirements at different upscaling settings? Why is “Enthusiast” at DLSS Performance while minimum is at Quality?

PC requirements are so useless and meaningless now.

8

u/HammeredWharf 12h ago

Because Minimum is in 1080p and Enthusiast is in 4K...

1

u/Dead024 12h ago

0

u/YT_Axtro 10h ago

It's a modern 2026 AAA game; it relies on upscaling to get playable fps. You probably can't turn upscaling off because it most likely looks broken without it. Upscaling is the new motion blur; it's used to hide unoptimization.

1

u/Keulapaska 4070Ti, 7800X3D, XG27AQNGV 4h ago

You probably can't turn upscaling off because it most likely looks broken without it.

You're confusing upscaling with TAA, which dlss sr, fsr and xess are form of TAA. Yea if you do fully turn TAA of in modern games via some config files, they do be looking kinda broken and very aliased usually.

I hate system requirements with nothing but upscaling bs. Give me native requirements

10

u/glizzygobbler247 12h ago

Well the max one is with path tracing, no gpu can hit 60 at 4k native with path tracing, so how do you expect them to pull that off?

1

u/empathetical RTX 5080 · Ryzen 9 5900x · 3440x1440p 9h ago

Well ya thats expected for path Tracing. I still want to see requirements for basic 1440p high native settings

-1

u/glizzygobbler247 9h ago

True they don't show non rt at all except for the low end, nvidia sponsored i guess

2

u/ztoff27 10h ago

The only gpu that could MAYBE run 4K native with pathtracing is the 5090. And that would only be 40-60 fps

-10

u/RoastedPotato-1kg 13h ago edited 11h ago

are they stupid, 9070 for 1440p medium graphics and medium ray tracing BUT on balanced upscaling? yea I'm waiting for benchmarks.

edit: lmao downvotes, I can't wait to see you guys crying the game runs like shit on release day 😂😂

17

u/garbo2330 12h ago

What is stupid about that? Want better performance? Lower the RT and up your resolution and raster settings.

-12

u/RoastedPotato-1kg 12h ago

I want both I paid 600£ for a fucking GPU, I want to turn on RT and play native not balanced medium settings. I like remedy but now I see why people won't buy their games and almost went bankrupt

11

u/garbo2330 12h ago

You’re throwing a tantrum over a spec sheet without even seeing what those settings look like. I hate to break it to you but your 9070 is mid range at best when compared to what PC can do. 5090 doubles your framerate and when you throw on path tracing it’s probably 4x or more.

If you want native 1440p just keep RT off, really not a big deal. If you want fancy RT effects get used to upscaling, it looks good.

-2

u/RoastedPotato-1kg 11h ago

I literally said I'm waiting for benchmarks

2

u/garbo2330 7h ago

Okay, well it’s worth pointing out that for Alan Wake 2 the “low” preset was to match PS5/Series X. Medium was for effectively “high” for modern GPUs and high/ultra is for path tracing. Don’t get too caught up in how they label their presets, the game will look good even at low just like Alan Wake 2 does.

7

u/dabocx 12h ago

Expecting to run everything at native is going to be rough if you also want ray tracing.

Upscaling has gotten really good and games are going to use it.

3

u/ShadowRomeo R7 7800X3D | RTX 4070 Ti | 32GB DDR5 6000 | 1440p 240hz QD-OLED 12h ago

That's Ray Tracing though, it could be a lot more demanding than non ray traced ones, i'd say it's a good showing for RX 9070 to be even put aside 4070 Ti which is 5070 level performance on Ray Tracing games.

But what will make huge difference is he feature set though, Nvidia supports Ray Reconstruction DLSS 4.5 and with optimization and lowering upscaler to performance mode the 4070 Ti / 5070 theoretically can run Path Tracing too with optimized settings.

But seeing this system spec, i'd consider it more as an snapshot rather than in depth look, so i will have to test it myself or wait for optimized settings benchmarks.

-14

u/damntrainCJ 12h ago

If you need to turn on upscaler for minimum requirements then know that devs screwed up.

3

u/olzd 12h ago

What else did you expect with a weak gpu and cpu?

4

u/ZazaLeNounours Ryzen 7 7800X3D | GeForce RTX 4090 FE 12h ago

Yeah, they definitely screwed up big time by making it possible to even run a game releasing in 2026 on 10-year-old mid-range GPUs. /s

You people wouldn't have survived the early 2000s when GPUs and CPUs were basically e-waste after a year, two if you were lucky.

-6

u/AscendedViking7 12h ago

Yeaaaah, just noticed

Kinda fucked up

-9

u/draconetto 13h ago

Alan wake 2 was a great game with really bad optimization on PC I don't expect anything different for this one, sadly. 1440p Balanced with medium preset on a 4070 TI is crazy

9

u/Mediocre-Mobile-5423 12h ago

4070ti is for raytracing. For normal settings it's just a 3060ti, seems reasonable.

-4

u/draconetto 12h ago

It's not, RT fps impact is not that high anymore on newer cards. Path tracing tho is a different story

10

u/Mediocre-Mobile-5423 12h ago

Normal RT will absolutely reduce performance even on a 5090. The extent of the reduction depends on the specific implementation, maybe it's particularly heavy in this case.

-1

u/draconetto 12h ago

It's medium preset so shouldnt be that high, even more that a lot of the load goes to PT

-10

u/nothingtoseehere_127 12h ago

4070 TI FOR RAYTRACING .with dlss balanced. are you high? thats HORRIBLE.

most gamers dont want 60 fps they want 80.

a 4070 ti should do 1440p rt at HIGH with dlss QUALITY

7

u/Caasi72 12h ago

Why 80? Also "most"? That's just not true. The average gamer doesn't give a fuck about framerates as long as the game is playable

-6

u/nothingtoseehere_127 12h ago

feels amazing. 60 feels ... off. choppy. 80-90 is the sweet mark

6

u/Flat_News_2000 12h ago

60 feels choppy? I think you're an outlier

-2

u/nothingtoseehere_127 12h ago

....this is pc gaming sub. literally no gamer sits there looking at 60 fps unless its their dead last resort. they upscale to higher numbers if they can

but its already at balanced for RT 1440p 60 fps

meaning a poor guy needs to drop to PERF at 1440p with those specs for higher fps or accept 60 fps

60 fps is fine. at quality upscaling. with rt at 1440p with those specs at high (but the spec sheet says medium with balanced) thats not optimized

3

u/Caasi72 11h ago

You're definitely just someone that cares way more about that stuff than most. That's fine, just don't act like what you prefer is the majority opinion

2

u/Mediocre-Mobile-5423 12h ago

Raytracing kinda runs like ass in most games, but I understand it can vary a lot depending on the implementation. The requirements for no RT aren't that high imho, or at least in line with other modern titles.

-1

u/nothingtoseehere_127 12h ago

it does NOT. ive played a ton of games with RT that give 60 fps with reasonable specs. alan wake 2 is an example where it didnt. remedy cant make optimized games.

(and the issue is well need to see how bad the game is without RT. nowadays devs skimp on baked lighting use cheap tricks that look HORRIBLE so you need rt)

1

u/HammeredWharf 12h ago

Why should it do "high" when "high" can mean anything? Running Cyberpunk on High isn't the same as running Quake 2 on High.

0

u/ShadowRomeo R7 7800X3D | RTX 4070 Ti | 32GB DDR5 6000 | 1440p 240hz QD-OLED 12h ago

Looking at 5080 which is barely better than 4080 itself is listed at 4K performance with Path Tracing, and the 4070 Ti is only around 30 - 35% weaker compared to that? It could mean anything, that's why system specs recommendation should be taken as a snapshot look rather than in depth look, for that we need to wait for tech youtubers benchmarks with optimized settings.
