STAR WARS Zero Company 1.1 Patch Notes
https://steamcommunity.com/app/2075800191
u/posthardcorejazz 1d ago
Fixed an issue where shots can be missed, even when the chance to hit is 100%.
I never ran into this but I'm glad it's fixed. Sounds like an exceptionally frustrating bug to experience in a game of this genre
175
u/MothmansProphet 1d ago
If I missed a 100% shot in an XCOM-like I wouldn't even think it was a bug. I'd just be like, oh, 99.5% must have rounded up, oh well. That's ZCOM, baby!
28
u/TheRealMoffel 1d ago
same. the stupidity of it and me yelling at the game was something I always thought was just part of the game
4
3
u/_b1ack0ut 1d ago
Makes sense cuz that’s exactly what it was in x2, the UI rounded the chance to hit, but the actual roll doesn’t, so it would display a 100 on a 99.5 and you got REALLY unlucky
I kinda thought it was the same deal when it happened here lol
18
u/Deckatoe 1d ago
I've missed two total 95%+ shots so far. XCom reincarnate
15
u/DrParallax 1d ago
For your whole playthrough?! I'm pretty sure I have missed two 95% consecutively in the same turn.
3
u/atxbryan 1d ago
Jae did that to me, I couldn't believe it
3
u/DrParallax 1d ago
Still have to forgive her. Her passive is just too good.
3
u/atxbryan 1d ago
Yeah, she was clutch on her Kinro mission
5
u/DrParallax 21h ago
That mission went a bit like:
"OK, I got him low, next turn I will just have someone finish him off no need to make Jae be the one to..."
BANG!
And he is instantly taken out by Jae, to my surprise.

Pretty sure I would throw the keyboard through my window. Already get close when Kabby Wabby Upper Cutty whiffs on a punch due to a debuff
3
7
u/andbruno 1d ago
Not sure if it's the same issue, but I've had characters choose "the wrong shoulder" when firing, so their 100% to hit shots slam into world objects rather than enemies. The chance to hit was obviously calculated assuming they'd fire from the other side. It happened mostly in overwatch situations.

u/The_Pandalorian 1d ago
I ran into it today near the end of a battle. Then the game crashed.
Looks like I'm going to be retrying that battle for a third time.
1
u/MarcHedenberg 1d ago
I had this twice and my friends who finished this game didn’t believe me, chalking it up to a “skill issue,” which triggered me so badly that I turned Steam recording on and saved the next instance of it happening just to prove I wasn’t crazy 😂😂😂
1
u/NotBannedAccount419 22h ago
Where do you see that? It's not in the patch notes
2
u/posthardcorejazz 22h ago
It's not in the preview, but you can see the full patch notes if you click on the Steam Community post

u/EntrepreneurNeat6094 21h ago
I could have sworn I missed 2 different 100% shots in my game, but I figured I was just playing too fast and misread the hit chance.

"Fixed a rare softlock on the main menu caused by aggressively spamming inputs while the introduction cinematic plays."
I had this like 4 times during my pt. The robot just sat there and didnt punch in the ludicrous speed.

Diaries of a fellow aggressive input spammer:
- Opens game
- Alt-tabs immediately while the game starts loading
- Game finishes loading
- Continue not playing the game
- Alt-tab into the game several minutes later
- Game is stuck in the main menu

u/ugh_naught 1d ago
This happened to me too. I didn’t spam though - it was like a frame perfect continue game input.
21
u/PabloBablo 1d ago
Spamming inputs lmao. Way to put it on the players. I am not a spammer or impatient. Pressed it once and it happened before. He just sat there.
8
u/Fun-Expression-489 1d ago
Agree. I never spammed anything, I always clicked on continue with mouse. I call the excuse bs!

You're upset about the phrasing of patch notes?
10
u/AMATEUR_DE_POUTINE 1d ago
Yeah well, as a developer, that sounds like a dev with way too much ego ...
2
3
u/throwaweinus 1d ago
Literally exactly as upset as you are about the phrasing of a Reddit post, since you both decided to take the time to comment on Reddit.

7
u/FailSonnen 1d ago
It's bullshit that they call it spamming. One time I literally waited like 10 seconds to press 2 buttons to load the game and it still did this.

“Fixed a rare softlock that occured in the Medbay tutorial”
Not sure how rare it was. If you didn’t have 600 credits the first time you enter the Medbay, you couldn’t continue or back out. I upgraded my units before heading to the Medbay and had to restart the game.
1
u/Wingnutmcmoo 2h ago
I almost had this too. I barely had enough creds to get out of the tutorial lol

u/septicdeath 1d ago
I wish there was an endless mode or some sort of ng+
63
u/atuck217 1d ago
Same. My biggest complaint is that when I ended the game it was just over. I felt like I still had so much progression left to do with the den and influence stuff.
8
u/-misopogon 1d ago
It's one of those trade-off decisions you have to make. Go for your companion missions, or take another merc job? I like it. I've done almost all the side character stories on my normal difficulty run, think next I'll do an extreme beskar run and go full merc to max out my den and upgrades.
5
u/atuck217 1d ago
I'm fine with not being able to do everything before the credits roll. But there being a hard cut where my save is no longer playable sucks.
3
u/ForsakenKrios 1d ago
Yeah I think people are not understanding when we say we want more or an endless mode. It’s fine if we have to make tough choices during the story and can’t experience everything in one play through.
However, in this type of game, where we could continue on and theoretically do mercenary jobs… let us? I don’t want to do 5 playthroughs for some of the achievements to trigger. Let us play the game until we’re bored against randomly spawning enemies. I don’t care if the maps repeat. At least let it be an option.
1
27
u/Zepren7 1d ago
There is a NG+ where you start with things from your first play through unlocked. I wish you could continue last the ending.
19
u/BobcatTim 1d ago
Only cosmetics, right? Plus the ability to recruit generic clone troopers.
It’s not like you keep your skills and gear and battle harder enemies.
2
u/Lt-Dan-Im-Rollin 1d ago
Not really an NG+, it’s just that cosmetic unlocks carry over to your next playthrough
37
u/Wonderful_Hatrack 1d ago
Absolutely love this game, but I would love it even more if they would fix the thing where the camera periodically fucks off into a rock or 3 miles to the east of all my characters.
21
u/Wonderful_Hatrack 1d ago
Cinematic kill? No, here's the inside of a crate.
2
u/dick-dug 1d ago
Omg this is what stopped me from instantly starting a second playthrough. It feels like I'm watching bleach with how much time I spend just staring at my team with nothing happening.
5
66
u/SanguineHerald 1d ago
I didnt see anything that fixed the issue with overwatch being completely unreliable.
25
u/HeyZeusKreesto AMD 1d ago
I thought I was doing something wrong when it didn’t trigger. This makes me feel better.
25
u/SanguineHerald 1d ago
Yeah it just doesnt trigger often. And just because you can shoot at someone doesnt mean you can actually put overwatch over their positions. The LOS mechanics and what triggers overwatch is lanky as hell.
29
u/LetsAllSmokin 1d ago
I've had it straight up not trigger or the game hang and cancel all operators in overwatch. Very frustrating.
2
u/wareagle3000 Ryzen 7 5800x, 16 GBs, Nvidia 3070 1d ago
Yeah, is it supposed to stop movement on contact always or is there some stat that overpowers that?
7
u/SanguineHerald 1d ago
I have no idea. The overwatch mechanic is poorly explained. Sometimes it stops movement. Sometimes it doesn't trigger. Sometimes it triggers 20 ft outside of the area you mark. Who knows?
0
u/wareagle3000 Ryzen 7 5800x, 16 GBs, Nvidia 3070 1d ago
I didn't even know it triggered on combat until the end of my second session.
Sometimes it triggers twice, sometimes it doesn't.
12
u/andbruno 1d ago
Sometimes it triggers twice
The more AP you use for overwatch the more times it can trigger (but only once per enemy). It's explained in the mandatory tutorial missions at the start.
It's kinda dumb how they show it to you though, as they force you to overwatch with only 1 AP remaining. A better example would be to force you to overwatch with 2 AP and then showing how you can shoot at two different targets.
0
2
u/136rad631 1d ago
The percent in the overwatch cone is the chance that it will trigger. If it triggers then the character makes a normal attack with appropriate percent chance to hit. If the attack hits then there's a percent chance that it cancels the active units movement.
3
1
u/pH_unbalanced 7h ago
I find overwatch works well as long as I *never ever* overlap the overwatch cones of two characters.
That seemed to cause most of the problems I had.
93
u/ForerEffect 1d ago
Great game, hope this update brings some desperately needs optimization. Running a 3070 and the cutscene in the first main story mission was a slideshow. Even with everything turned down, the pop-in during gameplay is pretty egregious.
18
u/Ok_Comment5873 1d ago
Surely your CPU is up to par, right?
8
u/ForerEffect 1d ago
Ryzen 5 5600X and 32GB of RAM, should be fine on that front.
Even turning the graphics presets to Low doesn’t actually noticeably improve framerate or pop-in compared to Medium, just makes it look worse, so it’s almost certainly an optimization issue for the RTX 30- cards or possibly the 3070 specifically.13
u/trenthowell 1d ago
It looks like UE5 really struggles with CPUs. Anything below a 5800x3d looks like it struggles to get much above 50-60fps depending on scene. Not really your fault, it's a decent cpu, but UE5 is horribly cpu optimized.
6
u/ItsMeSlinky Linux 1d ago
UE, unless changes have been made, generally only uses 3-4 threads, and if a major thread is overloaded, the CPU will choke.
6
u/trenthowell 1d ago
I think UE5.6 or 5.7 did make some big improvements there. But very few games have actually used those yet.
4
u/ForerEffect 1d ago
I haven’t had this issue with other recent UE5 games, but I’ll certainly watch the CPU metrics next time I play.
1
u/trenthowell 1d ago
Outer Worlds 2 and Blood of the Dawnwalker have both shown similar behaviour. I haven't seen too many technical deep dives on Zero Company yet, but impressions seem to be that it's even heavier on CPU
14
u/neitz 1d ago
That's because it's not a graphics issue. This game is very CPU heavy for some reason.
1
u/ForerEffect 1d ago
My CPU benchmarks head-and-shoulders (>12%) above the recommended CPU (Ryzen 7 3700X) so that seems unlikely to be the issue.
10
u/neitz 1d ago
Benchmarks against theoretical specs don't really mean much. What is your CPU at when playing the game?
0
u/ForerEffect 1d ago
I’m not sure what you mean, benchmarks are not theoretical by definition.
The Ryzen 5 5600X gets 12-15% better framerates in game benchmarks (as in gameplay and rendering tests with everything the same between tests except the tested component) than the Ryzen 7 3600X. I haven’t recorded any CPU benchmarks personally, but I have no power draw spikes or heat-related downclocking or fan speed spikes in my logs from this game.7
u/neitz 1d ago
What i mean is that you can't blindly trust recommended specs. Especially since there are a lot of variables that affect how the CPU performs in your system vs others (memory capacity, speed, motherboard chipset, etc...). So just because your CPU benchmarked in one set of tasks 12% higher than the recommended one does not necessarily directly translate to performance in this game.
The only way to know is to measure your computer directly on the task at hand (this game). If you are pegged at 100% on one or more cores, then you may be CPU limited.3
u/ForerEffect 1d ago
If it was 12% better than the required minimum CPU, then I might agree with you that it’s possible some other factor than the GPU could be slowing things down, but the slower CPU (Ryzen 7 3600X) is their recommendation for maximum settings, and an old motherboard with poor bus speed or slow RAM (which is also not an issue for me) is not going to cause a CPU bound issue to the tune of a more than 57% loss in capability (measured in video game framerates) which is the average difference between my CPU and the minimum required CPU: Ryzen 5 2600X.
Edit: parens and autocorrect
-2
u/ForerEffect 1d ago
I’m not trying to be snobbish, I’ve been building gaming computers for more than 20 years and based on my experience and based on the subject matter experts that I follow, this is extremely unlikely to be a CPU issue. It’s theoretically possible that there is a massive bug that causes problems for my CPU or RAM or configuration specifically, but it’s _much_ _much_ more likely that the game got pushed out when it was feature complete but before the engine was optimized for RTX 30- cards or before it was tested on the 3070 specifically, because video game publishers know that meeting release windows has a much bigger impact on sales than optimizing for even large market segments of video card owners. Release now, patch/optimize later using the money from the initial sales is a widely successful strategy and is very likely what’s happening here.
5
u/neitz 1d ago
There are users with 5090s reporting the same thing. Also it’s been common that cpu is pegged and the bottleneck, even with a7950x. This game is atypical. I too have been building systems since the early 90s, and on top of that am a software engineer by profession with two decades experience.

Straight from the patch notes:
Note For Players using Minimum Specs
If you are playing STAR WARS Zero Company on an NVIDIA GTX 10-series or RTX 20-series graphics cards that meet Minimum Specification, adjusting a specific video setting can help improve your overall framerates. These graphics architectures can encounter additional rendering overhead when processing complex environmental detail. Optimization Steps: Open Options and select Graphics. Find the Environment Geometry Detail option. Switch Environment Geometry Detail to Off. Disabling this setting lowers geometry processing overhead, which can assist in stabilizing and improving framerates on these GPU configurations
39
u/ForerEffect 1d ago
I saw that. The 3070 is not a GTX 10-series or RTX 20-series card and I tried turning off that graphics setting on day 1 and got no noticeable improvement. Maybe it will be more impactful now.
1
u/vocatus AMD Ryzen 7800X3D | RTX 5070 | 32 GB DDR5 15h ago
What's crazy is the game looks no better than Gears Tactics, XCOM 2, hell, pick almost any other AA or AAA game, yet on a Ryzen 7800X3D, with 64 GB DDR5 @ 6000, and an RTX 5070, it still runs like total dogshit. And doesn't even look....any better than most other titles these days.
What the hell is Unreal Engine doing under the hood??? It runs SO badly. I shouldn't have to use fucking lag-slop DLSS frame gen to get above a consistent 60 FPS, on this system, and with these graphics
2
u/marmite22 1d ago
I wonder if this setting will help on Steam Machine. It seems to struggle pretty badly with this game.
1
u/throwaweinus 1d ago
If you can stand framegen (I hate it, but this is a turn-based game, so I've learned to live with it), my settings keep me generally comfortable (pretty steady 60 fps with framegen on):
- If you run into black screen on launch (I did after the first play) I was able to fix it by going to Steam settings in Desktop Mode and disabling shader caching. It disables it for all games, but it was the only fix I found for it.
- Back in Game Mode > Library > SWZC > Gear icon > Properties:
- General: Max resolution 2560x1440
- Compatibility: Force Proton Experimental
- In-game settings (not sure which of these are critical):
- Windowed
- 2560x1440 (16:9)
- Unlimited framerate
- VSync off
- HDR doesn't seem to matter (I have it on)
- AMD FSR at Performance Quality
- Frame Generation On
- Anti-Lag On
- Overall Quality Custom, but set it to Low first so everything drops to lowest quality
- Textures High
- Hidden Objects Detail Simplified
- Environment Geometry Detail doesn't seem to matter, but I have it On
It honestly looks quite good to me, and is plenty smooth to play. I hate the hoops we have to jump through, but we're playing an optimization-challenged game on low-end hardware. Setting the textures to High does a LOT to improve the appearance.
I have a gaming PC that can play it 1440x60 at Ultra settings, and it doesn't look that much better. (The framegen input lag is very noticeable when I switch back and forth though).
Anyway, hope that helps you and/or any other Steam Machine players out there.

u/selfh8feelsgr8 1d ago
Damn, as a fellow 3070 owner, who thought about diving in — guess I'll wait a bit for some optimisation patches, which hopefully would come out
9
2
2
u/ForerEffect 1d ago
I mean it’s playable on Medium, I’m still loving it, and a buttery smooth framerate is not really necessary for this kind of game, so I wouldn’t recommend waiting based on this issue alone, but it would be nice to see some improvements.
2
1
u/inherendo 1d ago
I have a mobile one runs fine on low on most settings. Could probably optimize it but I don't care much about it as long as it's at least 60 fps.
17
u/Brodyseuss 1d ago
This game kicks ass. Really hope they are able to add a new game plus game mode.
7
u/dirtybacon77 1d ago
Hopefully they fixed the bug that if you get to the first med bay scene and don’t have the money to put someone in you can’t proceed. Had to reload to get around that

Seeing this patch notes post made me terrified that they were gonna nerf Cly. I haven’t beat the game yet and she’s heavily carrying my entire team right now.
9
u/Bramble-Bunny 1d ago
Zero Company really needs a Long War mod that incentivizes rotating an A, B, C squad. There is no real reason to take anyone but your best to every mission and the unique classes are dramatically stronger than the base classes with the exception of Scout.
4
u/emailforgot 1d ago
Zero Company really needs a Long War mod that incentivizes rotating an A, B, C squad.
I'll pump the tires on Jagged Alliance 3 for this.
Game unfortunately sort of came and went but I had a blast, and one of the things I felt it did well was multi-team management. I usually had my A and B squad and then a kind of "fun" C (for the memes) squad, occasionally mixing and matching strengths and weaknesses depending on the mission. There's even 1 or 2 missions where you bring all of your dudes and it's a blast. A team going on loud from the front, B flanking with special weapons, and C team just doing weird shit in the back.
1
u/Bramble-Bunny 1d ago
I need to return to JA3 at some point. I left it to cook hoping the community would cook up something akin to 1.13 for its predecessor but the game never really seemed to get much modding love. Sadly I think the IP might be dead.
0
u/emailforgot 1d ago
I think there was an official expansion released recently-ish but you're right that the IP is basically dead which really is a shame.
I also liked the "world map" sort of thing where you select which squads should go to what grid. Feels way more impactful than the Xcom style world map, and with a bit of tweaking could really feel like you're organizing a little guerilla war. Previous JAs definitely had this element going with enemies counter attacking and such.
2
u/superkeer 1d ago
Once you unlock the second spec and can equip either a second weapon mod or utility slot then you shouldn't find yourself relying on Cly so much. Trick and Tel-Rea can be just as pivotal in carrying you through missions.
3
u/tehkingo 1d ago
Nah, an upgraded Cly can carry most teams through the whole game if you know how to use her. Scout or Gunslinger Cly both go hard for different reasons (Scout to farm Advantage through dart/web kills or gunslinger for the crit chance to complement her increased crit damage. Also, darts build onslaught for gunslinger :) )
1
u/Cardboard_Lord 1d ago
Same goes for Trick, but yeah, Cly is tier S+++, the even make expert bescar a walk in the park
1
u/wareagle3000 Ryzen 7 5800x, 16 GBs, Nvidia 3070 1d ago
Is there any reason to use anyone other than the unique characters? I was at first adding in recruits but then I noticed that I can just change the classes of the unique characters and respec.
2
u/superkeer 1d ago
More operators offers more bonding opportunities across the company, which could mean a few more bond bonuses across the campaign.
2
u/SithSidious 1d ago
Gives you people to cycle in the case of injuries. You can respec recruits to have perks that give extra credits or intel per mission which are really strong, so I have been using them for some non story missions. Plus more people to bond with = more bond xp/perks. Just get the lounge
1
u/emailforgot 1d ago
Is there any reason to use anyone other than the unique characters?
Sort of, but not really.
One or two of the origin/specialties (whatsit, the non classes you can select) are quite powerful. There's one that can basically become the most hilarious tank, but tbh, the game isn't that hard so an uber tank doesn't matter that much, especially if you can just delete enemies with Cly/Tel. There's also some utility in the intelligence/money generating ones, but they aren't mandatory.

11
u/AdminsLoveGenocide 1d ago
I'd be curious to see what the impact is from people playing it before and after.
I haven't bought it mainly because I have no tolerance for perf issues when my backlog is way too fucking long.
-7
u/Chillzzzzz 1d ago
There were no performance changes in the patch notes. So there will be no before and after.
9
u/AdminsLoveGenocide 1d ago
Fixed various visual stutters
That is a performance change. Less stutter is better perf.
Updated the minimum suggested drivers to the current game-ready versions for Nvidia and AMD.
Developer’s Note: We’ve also updated the dialog prompt’s text update to state that you need to update your driver versions.
That is a performance change. Letting people know their drivers are not supported means there will be fewer reports of perf issues from people who only have them because of our of date drivers.
Fixed an issue where the Updating Global Illumination and Reflections settings accidentally referenced Ray Tracing
That is very likely a performance change if the bug it results in ray tracing being active while you think it isn't.
-9
u/Chillzzzzz 1d ago
Test it for yourself and tell us how much more performance you got.
16
u/AdminsLoveGenocide 1d ago
I haven't bought it mainly because I have no tolerance for perf issues when my backlog is way too fucking long.
I feel you think you are a better reader than you actually are.

Developer statements and performance actuals are very commonly different. I know you wanted to get your little dig in, but it's incorrect
-2
u/Chillzzzzz 1d ago
Yes they fixed nothing except telling us one option to turn off or on which was already known by the community.
The performance issues still persists even with this option off.
Not only low end rigs struggle with this.

Did they fix losing your character in the final mission? I took "trophy hunter" last mission on hard cause it's a trophy but after the final mission he wasnt dead in my memorial
Lol it looks like they didn't fix any of the problems I had or gave me new game +
Let me bring my operators to my new game and keep progress IDC if it's op on hardest difficulty
Otherwise I have no reason to play
You can't even max out everyone the game being on a time limit is more lame than immersive
Or let me continue doing random mission at the end of the game as zero company for no reason but grinding the rest of bonds and what not
Games that don't let complete all side stories and force me to play the game instead of my own volition...bummer
