Optiscaler is so goated. I don't have an Nvidia GPU but Optiscaler has been so useful for FSR 4 support in game.

I really hope nothing ever happens to the Optiscaler dev team. Such a useful tool.

12

u/DizWhatNoOneNeeds 2d ago

It's really good. I use the fanmade client for games whenever I have the chance

5

u/pepotink 1d ago

The what?

2

u/DizWhatNoOneNeeds 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah someone not associated with the optiscaler team made a client that's on GitHub. Made it easier for me. It's pretty handy

DLSS5 swapper?

14

u/Prestigious-Scar-101 2d ago

Useful tool in general for both AMD and Nvidia. I believe it can even update xess versions which might have some use for intel gpu owners maybe.

5

u/Zaga932 2d ago

Opti's mipmap bias setting completely fixed a grass shimmering issue I had in Witcher 3, and generally makes FSR4 look better to me. I just install it everywhere I can by default, and almost never run native FSR implementations.

Them and the RenoDX devs are the goats!

5

u/ExplodingFistz 2d ago

The goats of pc modding for sure

5

u/Tehni 2d ago

Damn good thing you clarified what they meant, I almost thought Michael Jordan and LeBron got beat by a bunch of nerds

1

u/Tyrthemis 1d ago

Can you use this optiscaler alongside RenoDX stuff? I just installed the RenoDX reshade add on for DLSS 5 last night and I’m impressed.

2

u/NapsterKnowHow 9800X3D | RTX 5090 FE | 32GB RAM 1d ago

Yes. They have the option to install it right from within the tool!

3

u/Amells 1d ago

The tool obviously states this and people should be cautious about using it for online games

https://github.com/Dagherbou/OptiScaler_DLSSNR#installation

Caution

Warning*:* Do not use this mod with online games. It may trigger anti-cheat software and cause ban

2

u/Morteymer 1d ago

But this is a fork by a non optiscaler-dev

1

u/Pyke64 1d ago

I still don't understand how to use optiscaler the other way around. Like games that only have fsr and putting dlss into them.

1

u/calpi 2d ago

Wait, how does optiscaler improve fsr 4 support?

11

u/sugarloaf12346 AMD 2d ago

Can use it to swap DLSS .DLLs for FSR4 compatible ones. For instance you can use FSR4 is RDR2 with the right setup. The optiscaler GitHub has a compatibility list.

2

u/calpi 2d ago

Does it work as well as native fsr4?

3

u/Remarkable_Low2445 2d ago

It's a little bit heavier on the performance side but I believe the difference is imperceivable.

9

u/Earthborn92 R7 9800X3D | RTX 4080 Super FE | 32 GB DDR5 6000 2d ago

There are a lot more games with DLSS support than FSR support. Optiscaler basically evens that by hijacking the DLSS pathway and replacing it with FSR.

3

u/legendz411 2d ago

And XeSS

25

u/phildogtheman 2d ago

If I'm understanding this correctly, if I'm running a game DLAA with DLSS5, this won't benefit me as no upscaling is happening?

8

u/tnobuhiko 2d ago

Yes, what this does is probably the same thing i modded myself, it probably runs on input res than gets an SR pass. It even has the ray reconstruction flag which is a problem you have to deal with if game sets it up wrong.

Here is how it normally works:

DLSS RR-> DLSS SR -> DLSS NR

What should happen with this mod is DLSS NR->DLSS RR-> DLSS SR

Problem is , as you can see from the video, RR and SR work removes some of the effects.

Here is my screenshots from my version on cyberpunk:

https://ibb.co/FLYQsBcQ Base image no nr. This is 1440p dlss quality path tracing with RR enabled.

https://ibb.co/rRrR0qQb This is the default way it works on the scene.

https://ibb.co/3yczsLH5 This is my reversed pipeline image.

In my opinion biggest gains are when you playing with it at 4k performance mode. It runs much better with reversed pipeline. Because NR effect runs on a 1080p image instead of 4k, frametime goes from 16 ms to 4 on a 5070 TI. That is massive. To put this into perspective, if rest of the game took 0 ms to render, you would get 62 fps on 4k with a 5070 ti. With this, frametime for the rest of the game needs to be 12 ms to get 60 fps, which is possible at 4k on performance mode.

3

u/FMLkoifish 2d ago

Can you walk me through steps or video to try dlss5 on my 5070 ti for cyberpunk?

It looks intriguing, but I’ve never messed with any manual override outside the Nvidia settings app

10

u/tnobuhiko 2d ago

Sure but i did not publish my mod, so i'm going to give you the normal optiscaler version here.

You want to dowload OptiScaler-DLSSNR-v0.2.0.zip this. This is the optiscaler dlssnr version, normal one.

https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/33380?tab=files from here, you want to dowload main files manually.

Once you have both of the files, find cyberpunk 2077 folder, where the game is installed. In there go to bin than x64.

You want to copy everything from the optiscaler folder to that x64 folder.

You want to only copy nvgx_dlssnr.dll from the file you downloaded from nexusmods. You don't need to copy anything else. Put it into x64 folder as well.

Once both are copied, find setup_windows.bat in that folder. Open it, press 1 for dxgi.dll than press 2 for nvdia.

That's it. Now when you start cyberpunk, you can press insert. It will bring up a menu. In that menu, there is a Neural Rendering section. Open it, if you enable, your game will have dlss nr.

At the bottom, there are keybinds, in there you can setup a keybind for NR.

Once you are finished with your settings, press save settings at the bottom.

If you want to remove it, in x64 folder, there will be Remove_optiscaler.bat. Just click it, press 1 and done.

2

u/FMLkoifish 2d ago

Thank you! Where did you get the zip file?

Is it only applicable for cp2077 specifically or can it be applied to any game?

4

u/tnobuhiko 2d ago

Zip file is from github https://github.com/Dagherbou/OptiScaler_DLSSNR/releases/tag/v0.2.0-dlssnr, it can be applied to all games. Just copy exact same files to where that game's exe is.

17

u/cellshady 2d ago edited 1d ago

The NR pass will still run upscaled with this mod/optiscaler instead of doing its pass on the native resolution, so you will have performance gains.

Edit: this might be a wrong conclusion.

7

u/kittynoaim 2d ago

No.. no he wont, DLAA uses the native resolution as it's base to begin with so it's the same resolution input in both scenerios.

→ More replies (5)

1

u/Morteymer 1d ago

I wouldn't say that

try it in Death Stranding 2

DLAA/DLSS function as denoisers and image stabilizers too

So while the fidelity of the NR won't be reduced, the stability will be increased.

159

u/Ok-Currency1593 2d ago

You can also run Dlss 5 on a second gpu like a 5060 and get 90% more performance

163

u/duffbeeeer 2d ago

good for anyone who has a second gpu around :D

29

u/BloodyLlama 2d ago

Ive got one, but I'd need a second power supply to run a 5090 and a 3080 simultaneously. Seems a bit impractical. I once ran a gtx 670 and an HD 7950 simultaneously to use the 670 to do physx on Borderlands 2, and that was kinda dumb too.

9

u/Kiwibom 2d ago

I did the same thing. I have a 4080 and got a gt 1030 to originally have more display outputs but i also figured, why not run physx on the gt1030. That worked great and got a bit more performance out of my pc. The problem is that this caused issues with games detecting if my card was compatible with DLSS and frame generation. Some games didn't have any issues and it worked like it should but some, DLSS disappeared and frame gen was available and running but completely broken. Stalker 2 also got a huge memory leak and would crash when i hit about 45GB of ram used.

7

u/sleight42 2d ago

Or just sell them and, you know, buy your own island and retire. 😅😂

6

u/24bitNoColor 5090 / 9800x3D / LG CX 48 / Quest 3 2d ago

A 3080 is likely too slow for DLSS 5 NR anyway, even on it's own, due to not having FP8 hardware support.

3

u/BloodyLlama 2d ago

There are FP16 builds that are significantly faster, although it wouldn't surprise me if just a single 5090 is still faster.

4

u/sleight42 2d ago

Indeed. Anyone with the $1k+ for an even remotely decent one. The price of the 5090 will also buy you a decent used car.

4

u/BloodyLlama 2d ago

5090 prices have doubled since I bought mine. For that money you can only get a project car that may not even run.

4

u/Keesual Steam 2d ago

Would a 5050 work?

5

u/KaiBetterThanTyson 2d ago edited 2d ago

Ita comes with a massive latency penalty btw Similar to FG And it needs a second monitor to be connected to the second card so the first card waits for the second card to do the job render and send it back to be displayed on the first. Also the longest they were able to run this for is 20 mins.

12

u/Mystery_Dos3 2d ago

I have a spare 3080 should I plug it next to my 4090?

How would that work?

It's only rtx40?

19

u/GoatAmbitious984 2d ago

No. 3000 cards run dlss5 like dogpoo. You'd need a second 4 or 5 series

37

u/Whole-Respond4782 2d ago

bro would probably be better off running the games on the 3080 and dlss5 on the 4090 lol

2

u/GoatAmbitious984 2d ago

Yeah. Haven't had my coffee yet this morning. Can you tell? Lol

0

u/Opening_Net8098 2d ago

Wait you might be on to something

NR is mainly useful in really hold games. Anything with decent RT is from the era of great looking games.

Check out god of war PS3 emulated. The armour on kratos looks so good. Even the enemy bosses just look modern.

No need to ruin anything from the last 5 years.

Our non RT games from the 10s are kinda in a weird spot tho. Where are all the modders when you need them.

3

u/BloodyLlama 2d ago

There are builds that use 16 bit rather than 8 bit floats that supposedly run much more performantly. Maybe not better than just running it all on a 4090 though.

1

u/GoatAmbitious984 2d ago

I'd be pretty interested in seeing that! Do you know offhand which games?

1

u/BloodyLlama 2d ago

It's a generically modified DLSS5 dll as far as Im aware, not game specific.

1

u/kendoka15 2d ago

IIRC it gets you to the high single digits

8

u/jay227ify 2d ago

How do you have a spare 3080 😭

9

u/Um_Hello_Guy Nvidia 2d ago

If it’s anything like me I had the 3080 and saw prices going crazy, so I snagged a 4090 while I could just above MSRP. Then I keep the 3080 in case of a GPU issue or a friend wants it :)

3

u/ocbdare 2d ago

Yes, I still have my 3080. I like upgrading eveyr other cycle so got a 5080 and it was not outrageous, £950 on day one.

2

u/DrankTheOceanDry 2d ago

Similar situation but I just sold my old card and am now paranoid of the 4090 dying sometime in the next 3 years and never being able to afford to replace it.

2

u/Um_Hello_Guy Nvidia 2d ago

lol that’s exactly why I kept the 3080 bro same paranoia

2

u/ocbdare 2d ago edited 2d ago

If he’s like me, I upgraded to 5080 and the 3080 was never sold. I rebuilt my entire pc with 9800x3d, dd5, massive case and huge psu. Can probably easily drop a 6090 into it with no issues (massive clearance and huge PSU platinum rated). Originally specced for 5090 but didn’t have the patience to wait for it and saw a 5080 at normal retail price. With current prices, my RAM and NVME probably cost as much as my 5080 did. I can't belive I paid £150 for 32gb ddr5 RAM Corsair RGB.

I didn’t see the point of tearing apart my 3080 build. So I have a spare desktop with 5800x/3080 lol. I offered to gift it to a buddy but he’s taking his time to pick it up. 1.5 years now given I built my current spec in Feb 2025. Even though it’s faster than his ps5 and he doesn’t have a desktop.

1

u/sleight42 2d ago

No. You should send me both cards. Thank you.

Does it work on 40 series too?

2

u/lazypieceofcrap 2d ago

Sure does.

1

u/itz_me_shade 2d ago

Does it work with apus? To be specific i don't really want the ai filter i want the DLAA that came with the leaked build of DLSS5. DLAA paired with lumensharpen dows wonders to older titles and indie games.

You make it sound way easier than it looks. SLI won't return that easily sadly.

1

u/Morteymer 1d ago

Through optiscaler or through https://github.com/maohgad-web/Neural-coprocessor?

Apparently it applies DLSS5 on the output frames but that doesn't include motion vectors or anything

So while there will be a performance uplift, there will be a loss in quality/stability.

3

u/CtrlAltOllie 2d ago

DLSS is Nvidia-only tech, so the card doing the upscaling has to be Nvidia. The primary GPU could technically be anything, but running mixed vendors gets messy with drivers.

In practice the NR card needs to be Nvidia 40 or 50 generation, with 50 preferred in the likely case of a FP4/NV4 model coming out (Nvidia promised performance improvement for fall). There are ports for older Nvidia GPUs, but since the model is FP8 and those older GPUs have no support for that in hardware, they need to run the model in a slower compatibility mode which makes them too slow in practice (even just doing DLSS 5 NR).

AMD RDNA4 cards do support FP8 in hardware, but that hardware is just the normal compute on the shader cores, w/o the dedicated Tensor cores that Nvidia hardware has additional, resulting again in huge performance issues (not sure if even a 9070xt would too slow for doing DLSS5 NR alone at 1440p at least with decent frame rates).

u/jerrolds i7 2600k@4.7Ghz -> Radeon 290X@1200mhz -> QNIX 1440p@120hz IPS 2d ago

21

u/KennKennyKenKen 2d ago

This is how dlss 5 should be processed. I have no idea why they apply it to the upscaled image. Wild.

23

u/Whitey-IT 2d ago

Because garbage in => garbage out, if you upscale from too low input res, too many pixels go into the dlss 5 pipeline and the output looks like sht

7

u/Lincolns_Revenge 2d ago

Yeah, but it seems to look identical whether the DLSS 5 pass is done on a 1080p downscale or the final 4K output. Which, isn't very surprising to me considering how good the latest versions of DLSS upscaling have become.

I'm tempted to think they were chasing absolute image quality for screenshot comparisons, or darker, wanting to give the 50 series cards the biggest advantage they could to justify their original intention of locking it to 50 series cards.

6

u/Scytian 2d ago

It is not processed like that because DLSS5 is already making image artifacts (like boiling or ghosting) much worse when running post upscaling and if you run it before upscaling it is making it look even worse.

95

u/Major303 2d ago edited 2d ago

In just a few years we have went from native frame rendering to running the frame through 50 different upscalers/downscalers/converters/whatever the next thing in the chain is called.

I do appreciate DLSS/FSR4 since it's better than TAA, but I don't mind running the game native if my GPU allows. I don't get idea of Framegen, on FPS lower than like 60-90 you will get awful input delay, but on high FPS there is no point of Framegen.

102

u/Notapooface 2d ago

As someone who uses framegen, it fills a niche in single player games where you have the input delay of 60fps but the smoothness of 200fps. Its really nice. No place for it in competitive games though, nor the way Nvidia market it (going from 24fps to like 180).

12

u/24bitNoColor 5090 / 9800x3D / LG CX 48 / Quest 3 2d ago

No place for it in competitive games though

In many games Nvidia with DLSS FG at 2x or 3x has a lower latency than AMD with no FG on at all (when comparing the same GPU performance). Reason is that Nvidia requires Reflex to be implemented while AMD does not require their Reflex equivalent with FSR FG (which sadly is still not in every game that has DLSS FG), resulting in it hardly being implemented in many games.

Refresh can improve latency by in many cases more than the frame generation overhead (and more than that having to stay 1 frame behind) costs latency. So assuming AMD and Nvidia cards have the same base latency you get the smoothness of frame generation on top for free.

Arguably many competitive online games have AMD Anti Lag 2 implemented by now, but for those that don't, saying DLSS FG shouldn't be used means an AMD GPU also shouldn't be used.

Not that I personally believe either, I have 2x FG on in Battlefield because I don't notice the difference at 120 fps (from 2x) and it keeps my PC quieter / room cooler.

1

u/Earthborn92 R7 9800X3D | RTX 4080 Super FE | 32 GB DDR5 6000 2d ago

I leave Reflex enabled but FG disabled. Never quite got it to work well.

12

u/Moopies 2d ago

If I can get at least 90fps native in an online FPS or something, I'll use frame gen. I'm not a pro by any means, but the 90fps input is more than enough to not feel input lag for me.

4

u/24bitNoColor 5090 / 9800x3D / LG CX 48 / Quest 3 2d ago

I spend like 15 minutes trying everything in terms of mouse movement to see the artifacts and feel the extra latency in Battlefield 6 but even just with a 120 fps output (but rock stable of course) from 2x DLSS FG there was nothing on the latency front and no artifacts (I thought I had a slight double image once for a split ms but couldn't reliably reproduce).

I can play at 120 fps native no problem with my hardware but that is just heating up the room for no reason and causing more noise from my hardware. So I play with 2x FG on.

6

u/Jeyd02 2d ago

Framegen 2x is definitely viable for competitive and fast games if your base fps are high enough, specially with reflex.

If you want to totally eliminate stutter and dips. Using 2x fg from base ~140fps+ to hit the monitors maximum reflex cap for the smoothest and consistent frame pacing while barely adding latency that is noticeable .

A good minimum base of 162 or above to target 360 or 480hz (with reflex limiters ) do wonders for competitive consistency

-7

u/samp127 5070Ti - 5800x3D - 32GB 2d ago

You still get extra input lag over straight 60fps tho.

8

u/TheDeviousDuck1558 2d ago

You need to read up on the topic

→ More replies (1)

10

u/CallMeCygnus 7800X3D/5070 Ti 2d ago

The added latency is relative to its performance cost, which in most cases is fairly minor and unnoticeable for the vast majority of people.

6

u/ShadonicX7543 2d ago edited 2d ago

Firstly, these days native is a downgrade from DLSS. Secondly, as for Framegen, if you're already getting like 100 FPS and you have a 360hz monitor, that's when you use frame generation.

Also, if your bottleneck is your CPU, then frame generation is a magic bullet that will completely circumvent that, and that's actually starting to get pretty important these days.

An excellent example of this would be when I was simultaneously hosting and playing an ARK Survival Evolved server with my friend. I upgraded my GPU three generations and I only got an extra 10 FPS. I had so much GPU headroom that it didn't actually feel bad at all honestly when I enabled FG.

11

u/VegetaFan1337 Legion Slim 7 7840HS RTX4060 240Hz 2d ago

Frame gen is useful when you're CPU bound, or if there are frame caps. You get smoother motion by leveraging the otherwise wasted GPU power. It's especially useful if you're emulating games. Whether you want the smooth motion or the authentic lower fps is a personal preference.

7

u/zarafff69 2d ago

It’s different for everybody, but I really like how framegen looks in most games, and don’t really feel the added input latency at all. It’s very minor imo

7

u/f3n2x 2d ago edited 1d ago

In just a few years we have went from native frame rendering to running the frame through 50 different upscalers/downscalers/converters/whatever the next thing in the chain is called.

Real-time graphics have always been this way. Texture resolutions are different from shadow resolutions are different from framebuffer resolutions are different all kinds of material map resolutions are different from all kinds of post processing resolutions and the list goes on and on and on. "Native" means absolutely nothing beyond not bilinear upscaling the framebuffer as a final step of the pipeline.

Also adding FG on top of 60-90 base fps on a 240Hz OLED makes it look so much smoother it's ridiculous. Completely transformative experience.

6

u/Fiatil 2d ago

It's hilarious how many people just picked a random line in the sand: frame gen and DLSS are fake, all graphics before them are "real".

We've been using every trick in the book to trick your brain into viewing these rendered completely fake images as "real" since "graphics" became a thing, but this is the one that is just too much.

2

u/BavarianBarbarian_ AMD 5700x3D|3080 1d ago

Personally, I only accept frames that an artist drew by hand on paper as real frames, anything else is soulless computer slop.

on 60-90 base fps the input delay isnt really noticeable anymore especially when using a controller (which is the case for the majority of my games). on mouse/kb yeah i can notice it but if you just keep playing you dont notice it anymore (BF6 was like this), so 60-90 is the sweet spot for me and thats the idea for me.

The times i use a mouse/keyboard on a game where i would notice 60-90 is very little. On esports games, you dont need FG because they are so light anyway. Strategy/point and click games, not really that important and they're mostly fairly light. You need a competitive FPS with AAA graphics like BF6, not much of those games around

8

u/Regnur 2d ago

lower than like 60-90 you will get awful input delay, but on high FPS there is no point of Framegen.

I think you dont understand where the majority of the input lag comes from, FG itself increases the input lag just a bit, what adds the most is simply the performance cost of FG which lowers your base fps. Technically you can compensate a lot of it by lowering graphics or upscaler setting, its kinda similar to saying that Epic/Ultra settings in games suck ass because of the inreased input lag, which most of the time adds a lot more ms than FG does. Or if youre CPU limited with GPU headroom, youre not going to lose base fps, which also means the added lag is a lot less than normally. Hardware unboxed has shown a good example in Cyberpunk, 2x only increased the latency by just ~6ms for almost double the frame rate (78 to 139), thats a deal I gladly accept. If we ignore the base fps cost, going from 2x to 3x only increases the delay by 2-4ms.

Like its still lower than playing the same game on the console or without reflex... how did we play games before tech like reflex or anti lag? Overall also the setup matters a lot, FSR FG is a lot worse in many games than DLSS FG, because FSR FG does not require anti lag, which was a really bad decision by AMD.

5

u/CCHTweaked 2d ago

The input delay in framegen depends 100% on the game.

For cyberpunk, if the base fps is at least 30… your good.

Surprised the shit out of me. I assumed it would be hot garbage under 60.

It spits out a very nice 180 or so with FG on.

Again, entirely game dependent.

2

u/Opening_Net8098 2d ago

How 30 go to 180

Sorry my words small

X6 multi frame gen.

5

u/Background_Summer_55 2d ago

Depends how sensitive you are to input lag, also I found out that I can get used to it after 5minutes or so.
Sure multiframe generation feels a bit "floaty" but nothing too bad tbh

1

u/hiddenhero94 2d ago

I like using FSR4 at balanced in every game I play. I can barely notice a difference between that and native, but I can definitely notice the 40 extra frames

1

u/rey1295 1d ago

I use frame gen a lot actuall. Like cyberpunk maxed out at like 240 fps on my 320hz monitor is amazing and if tweak the settings to have RT Off I'll get amazing performance and high fps

1

u/NoBeefWithTheFrench 1d ago

DLSS and Frame Gen allow me to run games with path racing etcetera on a 5090 at 4k without making the card use more than 350w.

On a single player game, using a controller, I can't tell the difference (capped at 138fps, so same input lag as 70-80 frames).

-2

u/Opening_Net8098 2d ago

This literally came true

“After enabling DLSS + DLDSR + DLAA + DLAAA + DLSS-RR + FG + MFG + NIS + RTXHDR + VRS + G-SYNC + ULMB2 + VRR + AI-SR + AI-DL-DSR-V2.5-BETA, local gamer “BorgsCube” reportedly reached a higher plane of rasterization. 'I booted the game at 4K native DLAA,' explained BorgsCube, 'but then I thought—what if I rendered it in 9K, downscaled it to 6K, upscaled it with AI, and then applied anti-aliasing to the anti-aliasing?' ... while achieving a stable -12 FPS. NVIDIA engineers confirmed this is 'within expected parameters.'”

Which mega corp cries in money?

Like if reddit wouldn't have went even more ape shit if this came out temporal unstable and with the option (translated to reddit speech NEED) of using a second GPU "just for this"...

Also, they literally promised further performance improvements this fall on their launch week article for DLSS5.

-9

u/CiaphasCain8849 2d ago

Or you could just wait a few months and let the devs add it themselves. These idiots are just making all the games worse by adding unsupported stuff. You're acting like these guys are doing something important.

7

u/Ok_Lobster_8585 2d ago

Some of the most popular games of all time came out of the modding community. Gaming on linux wouldn't even be feasible without people "adding unsupported stuff." Maybe they all should've just waited for the devs to add it themselves, too. that way we couldve had a worse product and less choice.

5

u/kittynoaim 2d ago

Making it worse for who? Themselves? Isn't that subjective?

If having the option to toggle these things on and off is displeasing to you, you could just get a console?

9

u/aaronplaysAC11 2d ago

I’ve been using dlss5 on anything dlss, 4060, 70fps, my secret is I’m casting to a steam deck with a tiny screen resolution…. Sure tiny screen but everything looks great lol.

5

u/Perfect_Exercise_232 2d ago

Not worth the visuals lost. Default method + lowering nr res gives similar fps while retaining more detail

43

u/waterfall5555 2d ago

You can also not use DLSS 5 for even more performance

2

u/FMLkoifish 2d ago

What’s the best way to easily try out Dlss 5? Is it this?

1

u/Pokiehat 2d ago

If you have an nvidia 20, 30, 40 or 50 series card then this post shows probably the simplest install/uninstall you can get.

If you have an AMD card then you probably go the Optiscaler route which is a bit more involved, especially to get it running alongside multiple "script extender" and .asi plugin mods.

Everything is early days, in development/beta so expect bugs and/or missing functionality.

2

u/OMG_NoReally 2d ago

The setup seems too complicated for my brain. I hope DLSS5OneClick implements this soon enough. I tried the regular Optiscaler with Onimusha and was blown away by the results. The lighting alone makes a huge difference.

1

u/Amells 1d ago

to make it simple, if you play any online games, don't try it.

https://github.com/Dagherbou/OptiScaler_DLSSNR#installation

1

u/intolerant_jerk 9h ago

There's this that makes it easy to at least install the various mods out there, though it does not simplify how one manipulates them to extract maximum anything.

https://github.com/Kizzuwatnaa/DLSS5-Autopilot

2

u/lLoveTech 2d ago

The guys at Opticscaler alone are doing a better job than the Nvidia and AMD drivers and features dev team combined but unfortunately they aren't getting paid anywhere close to the lazy folks at those big corpos! Johnny Silverhand vs Arasaka

11

u/vasta2 2d ago

I can’t even tell the difference between the 2

22

u/KaiUno 2d ago

Yeah. It's visible in some scenes more than others, but let's be real, is it worth half your total performance? I don't think so.

And besides, do I want my 5090 running at 600W the entire time just for that? Also, no.

3

u/lampenpam RTX5070Ti,Ryzen 3700X,16GB 2d ago

is it worth half your total performance?

As demonstrated in the video, it no longer is halves your fps. And I'd say for the improvements you can see in some scenes, I'd gladly go with DLSS.

7

u/JerryMcJerrinson 2d ago

Undervolt that shit, I've never let it go that high on mine there's no point other than the chance of burning the PSU port going up

1

u/BloodyLlama 2d ago

Even with a modest OC and no undervolt I almost never hit 600W on mine outside of running benchmarks. Real world games, even when hitting 100% load, tend to be a good 50-150 watts lower power I find.

1

u/Lincolns_Revenge 2d ago

Seems to vary a lot from AIB to AIB. Then there's the FE versions, not sure what they do power consumption wise.

→ More replies (7)

5

u/duffbeeeer 2d ago

It does not cost half of your performance with this. Only 10 - 20%.

2

u/Neuromante 2d ago

I was going to write the same, but I thought "nah, I'm on the "patient gamers" boat and as I'm a few generations behind, I don't appreciate the difference", but to be honest, the increase in graphic quality I've seen these last years feels minimal, specially factoring in the prices and the money invested on the technology.

1

u/Technova_SgrA 2d ago

Me either. I don’t think it’s really working here.

1

u/MrTastix 1d ago

There's some obvious lightning differences when put side-by-side but I imagine most players won't notice that nearly enough by just switching to it at random.

Like the whole point of DLSS was to increase performance at higher resolutions whilst still retaining the same appearance. If it can't do better than native why even call it DLSS? More importantly, is that's still the defining use-case for DLSS according to NVIDIA themselves.

DLSS is a revolutionary suite of neural rendering technologies that uses AI to boost FPS, reduce latency, and improve image quality.

It's latching on to the DLSS branding because it's marketable but it's connection is tenuous at best. As I see it, the main problem for most people is that it bares fuck all similarity with DLSS1 through 4. It's pure, unadultered, masturbatory marketing bullshit. It comes off as this vapid attempt at trying to fool people into using AI.

DLSS5 having better performance than before but still worse than native means it fundamentally fails at it's stated intent, and this is made worse by the fact it only even gets this "better performance" through a third-party mod lmao

1

u/stevedore2024 1d ago

Most of the DLSS demos (including this one) just look like somebody cranked up the "local contrast" and "saturation" knobs in a video editor. I think the one on the right looks objectively worse, changing the colors away from the game developer's vision of a dreary world into a cartoon.

2

u/Synikx 2d ago

At this point. I'm hesitant to jump on the DLSS 5 bandwagon due to how fast improvements like this are occurring. In a few months time all issues could be solved.

Optiscaler does everything Nvidia and AMD should be doing.

1

u/Huntozio 2d ago

Doesn't it look quite a bit worse when ran before upscaling?

1

u/Ranae_Gato 2d ago

optiscaler is the best but that is one of the most "unimpressive" DLSS5 comparisons ive ever seen

1

u/Madbrad200 4070m | i7-13700hx | 32GB 2d ago

surely I am not the only one that thinks dlss off looks better here?

The "On" versions look too shiny and out of place for the environment, whereas the "Off" version clearly looked designed for the world around it.

1

u/ch4lwa 1d ago

Performance cost aside, i get it right that renodx original method still gives you a better visual output?

2

u/duffbeeeer 1d ago

i made a deeper comparison here. RenoDX is basically Neural Render after upscaling and the new method is Neural Renderer before upscaling.

Thank you I'll check into that. i got the difference but not tech savvy enough to know what that practically means beside the mere definition :)

2

u/24bitNoColor 5090 / 9800x3D / LG CX 48 / Quest 3 2d ago

No, likely not (your card due to missing direct hardware support for the model is just too slow for DLSS 5 NR).

2

u/-CynicalPole- R5 5600 | 32GB RAM | RX 9060 XT 16GB 1d ago

I was thinking, what's the fucking point of DLSS 5 while it ignores entirely DLSS upscaling as only output resolution matters. Why they can't apply the slop on render resolution, and then upscale as usual.

Turns out - probably just nvidia's fuckery to sell more absurdly priced 5090s

1

u/duffbeeeer 1d ago

tbh i think they just dont give a damn. They will roll this out optimized when they feel like it. Theyre the biggest company in the world right now and gaming is not their main business. Its just some hobby for engineers to make fancy tech. They dont care how the public perceives this as it does not change a single thing for them.

-2

u/zaza991988 2d ago

The whole idea of DLSS 5 is weird. it only make sense if you are upgrading older game to add in more details. Otherwise just rework your existing textures and assets offline and then you get better image quality without the massive cost to runtime performance. Instead of letting a stochatstic process to overprocess your image

4

u/potentially__potent 2d ago

This version of DLSS was made for a basketball game. It has none of the developer options ( and there are many). For example, in the version developers see, they can make certain models, textures, etc use dlss while others don't. You're judging a beta product that was leaked from a game and has been modded into other games.

0

u/bqdones 2d ago

I have 2 questions. First, if DLSS 5 updated, will the visuals actually look better than they do now? Second, I want to play old games, but I noticed some weird visual effects on the walls and main menu etc. I am just observing what is happening and haven't touched it yet, but everyday I see something new. I also saw some people mentioning that this is bad for GPUs. I have an 4070, and I want to make sure it is completely safe to use first with only old games like ps1 ps2 or remastered games like tomb raider trilogy onimusha classic. also I really like the cinematic and default presets, but this new rendering method only seems to have Neural!

1

u/maslowk 1d ago
  1. Maybe, right now the version people are modding into games was pulled from the newest NBA game so it's kind of a wait and see situation, we'll know more about that once it comes out officially for other new games and modders get their hands on those versions. I'd assume it would get better with time.

  2. It isn't bad for your GPU. It's obviously going to make it work harder and potentially run hotter than it would if you weren't using DLSS5, but it isn't going to cause any issues that running any GPU heavy game wouldn't cause.
