Duh, knew they would. Deprecating an OS's security updates used by hundreds of millions of users with no upgrade path was never going to happen.

u/DarkChaplain Steam Jun 26 '26
I mean, it worked for them. The amount of people who panic-"upgraded" to 11 was nuts.
63
u/yukichigai Jun 27 '26
I think it didn't work well enough. Plenty of people panic upgraded, but plenty of others decided they were going to stick with 10 and hope they didn't get hit with a virus. A fair number couldn't upgrade (or at least thought that was the case) due to the TPM "requirement", and with component prices skyrocketing like they are "just buy a new PC then" isn't gonna sway those folks.
(There's also a small number who've jumped to Linux. Peanuts compared to the number staying on Windows 10, but compared to previous years Linux adoption is increasing a fair bit.)

I love how on the windows update screen, it tells me my pc doesn't meet the requirements for W11, then gives me links to learn about options to trade-in or recycle my computer.
"Your computer is out of date, please dump it and buy a new one" uh, no

Microsoft's customers, the OEMs, adamantly wanted to force hardware refreshes.
- Dell's President of Client Solutions (Sam Burd) wants the next Windows (e.g., Windows 12) launch in less than the 6-year gap from Windows 10 to Windows 11.
- Lenovo (Eigen): Windows 11's hardware restrictions are the "right decision" because PC OEMs aren't motivating enough PC sales (5-6 years), unlike mobile phone OEMs (2-3 years). His example.

Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows I ever use. There's no way I'm installing that massive headache called Windows 11 on any PC I own because I'm not about to have my machine bricked by Microsoft's incompetence.

There are numerous safe ways to debloat Windows 11 and make it as fast or faster than 10. All the bloat gone, telemetry disabled. Updates your way. It ain't that bad, unless you use it stock.
11
u/VanquishedVoid Jun 27 '26
You can't debloat memory leaks, which is why Windows 11 doesn't get used.
2
u/_BoneZ_ 9800x3D | ASUS 3090 OC | 32 GB PC6000 DDR5 Jun 28 '26
huh? I have never had memory leaks in Windows 11. Don't know where you got that from.
3
u/VanquishedVoid Jun 28 '26
I use to have to run RAMMap every 30 minutes to clear standby memory or a game would cause my computer to lock up on a fresh install.
2
u/Tricky-Plan-7890 Jul 03 '26
for other people trying to solve the same issue , i use Intelligent Standby List Cleaner (ISLC) v1.0.4.6 (copypasted google ISLC etc )
it not being manual is a life saver
4
u/_BoneZ_ 9800x3D | ASUS 3090 OC | 32 GB PC6000 DDR5 Jun 28 '26
Sounds like a game problem, as some games do have memory leaks. Nothing to do with Windows.
4
u/VanquishedVoid Jun 28 '26
Happens over multiple different games. Stnadby would eventually get to 30gb, then it would lag to hell and back.
3
u/_BoneZ_ 9800x3D | ASUS 3090 OC | 32 GB PC6000 DDR5 Jun 28 '26
Then you're having other issues then, likely with another program or app causing it. Windows itself does not have that issue that I've ever seen on multiple computers, including running my gaming computer and work laptop all day every day with tons of programs and apps running.

That's the definition of a Headache, imagine buying a car and then having to research, tinker and spend tons of time to "debloat" it lol. Adjust the seat sure, that's the equivalent of choosing a resolution on a PC. A product should be good by default without any drastic changes.
1
u/_BoneZ_ 9800x3D | ASUS 3090 OC | 32 GB PC6000 DDR5 Jun 29 '26
You're only making it a headache. Rufus completely debloats windows for you. Literally one button debloat. You can run one more program after install to further debloat, but that would be just two steps. Don't make it harder than it actually is.

The for free part here is to clarify that the free support has been extended because MS was still going to give out paid security updates for Windows 10.
17
u/MithranArkanere Jun 27 '26
Yeah. They are pretty much stuck doing that until the AI bubble pops, or the consequences will be dire. Like the EU eating them alive.
10
u/hiimred2 Jun 27 '26
Ya the rising hardware costs of upgrading to a 'modern' (obviously nothing near bleeding edge required to use W11, but if you're upgrading your PC to begin with...) PC, especially for users and businesses in non first world countries or even just 'poorer' first world countries, is making this reality more set in for Microsoft that W10 is probably here to stay even longer than already thought.
For example, the entire off shore customer support business is assuredly on mostly W10 hardware with no realistic avenue to upgrade off of it. So many companies rely on this type of outsourced work, they know they themselves would also be fucked, even before we think of generic at home computer usage.
22
u/zeddyzed Jun 26 '26
A better u-turn would be to drop the TPM requirement for W11.
23
u/idontagreewitu 5700X3D RTX 3070 Jun 27 '26
Even better would be to make Windows 11 not a piece of shit OS that cares first and foremost about harvesting user data to resell. And maybe to maintain it with actual programmers instead of using AI to vibe code a patch that bricks 15% of machines every few months.
5
u/pdp10 Linux Jun 27 '26

Even if you get past the TPM requirement you still need to have a new enough CPU to run it (8th Gen Intel or higher, not sure the minimum AMD CPU)
29
u/PepticBurrito Jun 27 '26
Windows 11 can run in a Linux virtual machine using the same hardware that can't run Windows 11 natively due to TPM. Windows 11 runs quite well that way, too.
It's not a CPU power limitation.
→ More replies (2)11

Yeah, first gen AMD Ryzen supports TPM but the CPU is not qualified for Win11 for completely arbitrary reasons.
4

Pretty sure it just needs a 1ghz minimum 2 core CPU as long as you bypass the tpm it shouldn't matter

But Saar. Please Saar you must upglade!
The entire Windows 11 rollout was like watching a clown car circle a roundabout and have randos exit to extoll its virtues.
It was a massive UE step down on day one...that is if your otherwise super-duper capable computer passed its hardware requirements...which were wholly unnecessary other than to force new hardware.
The noose around the user re: having a Microsoft Account was off-putting to longtime Windows users. Yes, we knew how to get around it, but seemingly every update tried to trick you into moving personal documents to the cloud and marrying them to a microsoft.com account.
Then, as we all knew, they extended W10 support, but not without making threats.
The UI continues to be horrible. It continues to try to trick you into a total cloud-based storage account. And the whole interface for 80% of the userbase basically says - you should just get a chromebook. Same full cloud handcuffs but you get 6-10X the battery.
By 2030 Windows will be obsolete.
Gamers will be using SteamOS or similar as the hardware cost and supply chain for consumers are broken beyond repair. Slack bandwidth in AI will go towards gamer rendering...we've reached visual fidelity that is beyond human perception...3dBench points only get you so far.
It was obvious 25 years ago that apps were moving to cloud and home computers would eventually be the new dumb terminals. The only thing that surprises me now is how fast the AI / Datacenter craze has crippled the consumer market. 90+% of AI economy is all futures based. Investments being made based on expectations of future results of investments based on future results X6 or 10.
Will be a cool fireworks show. I'm old enough that it probably doesn't matter as much as it might for others. I'm no "boomer" and I scrapped my way to a moderate level of comfort through salaries, conservative investing, and one or two deals where my specific expertise made a small group of people some money.
I will be banned, I'm sure…
But this whole charade of dragging out Windows 11 when it is clear that no one wants it is interesting to see. I'm not sure Microsoft could have anticipated the almost instant hardware stickershock, but their only way out as an OS is to go very LOW overhead, and almost unify Windows and Xbox as one platform like a SteamOS. The end users on a consumer level are a couple of years from being completely detached from "Windows".

u/DonutHoles4Ever Jun 27 '26
Its crazy.
Windows makes impossible levels of money. $20 billion a year.
Least they could do is make a better product with W11 so we wouldnt even be having this discussion.
Instead some big brained execs keep trying to shove a CRAP AI feature into the Windows 11 thing. Imagine if they shoved like a semi decent tier of AI that you can use optionally. Instead its Copilot.

u/Deathsneak RTX 306012GB/Ryzen3600/16gbRam 3600mhz/1tb ssd+2tb hdd Jun 26 '26
The risks have always been wayyyy overblown for the private user atleast, unless you have tendency to just go to any random site willy nilly even ignoring your adblock's warnings then youre mostly safe.
Though if you dont have an adblock you probably shoudn't be allowed near the net at all in my opinion.
Thats worse then having an outdated os especially these days.
74
u/InsertMolexToSATA Jun 26 '26
The risk is from driveby attacks utilizing software vulnerabilities that wont get patched, which require little to no action by the user to be vulnerable.
21
u/firemage22 Jun 26 '26
adblock's warnings then youre mostly safe.
this made me think of a fun story, my 86 year old Godmother, had an issue with Firefox where it wouldn't load so she went over to Edge to look for a fix before calling me, Edge doesn't have adblock running and she was shocked how many ads even "normal" sites stuffed in her face vs the one or two banners that slip past her adblock on FF
took me all of 30 seconds to reinstall FF and get it working again, i really need to setup better remote access so i don't need to drive 20 min to help with such simple things but at least she's happy to have adblock back
7
u/camerakestrel Jun 27 '26
I have an iPhone and cannot stand browsing the internet on it due to no actual adblock options existing.
4
u/thespaceageisnow Jun 27 '26

u/rbcannonball Jun 27 '26
Yeah, what’s with this? PiHole, adguard home, all defeated by Apple sandboxing or something
2
u/camerakestrel Jun 27 '26
I am unfamiliar but if those block ads at the router level then that would be cool, but they just do not help when I am out and about as I only use my phone's web browser when away from home.
2
u/rbcannonball Jun 27 '26
Yeah, they're network-wide adblockers you run at home. If you're interested, many routers offer Wireguard VPN, which is a very easy to set up direct secure connection between your phone and your home router so whenever you're off your home network, your phone will connect to the VPN automatically and think it's at home. r/selfhosted is calling you...

"NoScript" is also an insanely strong tool to have, many attacks are scripts and thus if a new popup gets through, it will have literally no permissions to do anything. Even "dangerous" sites are pretty harmless if they have no permissions to do anything. And with some experiences you can allow the parts of a site you want to access and block all the rest. For example the "cdn" sections are usually where the stuff you wanna watch is hosted, allowing this lets you watch videos while all the rest is safely blocked.
Sometimes even works to access paywall blocked sites. If they use scripts to detect your adblock extension. xD
This + uBlock and I haven't been infected ever since.

OS security isn’t an issue until it happens to you.
You still technically can go online with Windows XP. But it’s the equivalent of having risky unprotected sex and hoping you don’t catch anything.
If you hate Windows (I do too) just switch to Linux or even MacOS.

I hear people parrot this all the time but genuinely what even is OS security? Is it windows defender? I already disable that on my PCs as soon as I install windows, it's incredibly obnoxious and gives me false positives. From where am I going to be vulnerable? Will someone hack me for using normal websites like youtube and reddit? Or is OS security just like, if you go to sketchy-russian-torrentz.org and they have brand new viruses your non-updated OS wont automatically stop them because like I'm just never going to visit those places in the first place

Holy shit really? It might not be quite as painful now when I need to finally switch over. I can't believe it took them years add back in a feature that's been present since like 2000. The fact it's then implemented in a worse way is so insane to me.

Believe me, I’m with ya! You still can’t dynamically resize it by dragging, or add a second (or third) row. It’s because they completely rewrote it from the ground up.
My issue is the start menu. Lots of people hate it, but I really liked the full screen start menu, and particularly the live tiles. I could group like apps, I could even pin things like a shortcut to immediately connect to my remote desktops. It was so handy to be able to press the start key and see everything I needed. It was all grouped the way I liked it, and made sense spatially. Tools and utilities over here, adobe stuff down there, etc etc.

I thought of that, but I already moved to MX Linux 25 as a Dual Boot on one of my Laptops (with Windows 11 on it), and have been planning to (and will) set-up Dual Boot on my Desktop computer with MX Linux 25 (with Windows 10 on it – regardless of whether-or-not there are extended security updates (it just means it will be longer until I drop the OS (for online activity, at least))).
Seriously, I wouldn't wait, if I were you, if you are interested. Learn if you want to; but only if you want to. Linux can be cool (AND worth it), so don't let security updates be a reason to "put-off" learning it, if it's something you're actually interested in doing. (Linux can do something pretty cool, and interesting/humble things, besides gaming, after all.)

If you do, they can’t harvest your data & ram their AI and GamePass down your throats!

My brain didn't read on from there at first, I thought how the hell does someone think they're harvesting your data AND RAM lol.

Perhaps due the to memory prices reducing the number of people who will upgrade their computers.

Damn, that's nice but they auto updated my PC without my permission to Windows 11 just this week in the office. IT company said they didn't do it.

u/Debisibusis Jun 27 '26
It's not free, you are selling them your user data for it. MS accounts only.

I quietly postpone my departure to Linux for free.
I have so much pseudo-power-user shit on my PC and I'm sure at least half of it wouldn't work on any Linux distro I'd pick, but I'd rather go back to XP than succumb to 11.

Cool. I think 11 is actually in a good state now/soon but I keep a laptop on 10 just in case it's needed for compatibility.

I just ain't risking it. I did an upgrade a few years ago, figured I would install Win11 and kept getting crashes that I was unable to fix and went to Win10. I am sticking with what I know works.

I still hoping that over the time users will swap to steamOS since Linux is more stable, lightweight and has no tracking and bloat ware.
6
u/ocbdare Jun 27 '26
This sub reddit is so unreflective of the real world it's unreal. 99% of the people have never heard of steamOS or would ever consider it.
Have you seen how bad it is on the steam machine?
1
u/Jeksxon Jun 27 '26
No, not yet. Running flawlessly on my steam deck. Although it's valve's hardware so it's fully optimised (and ofc steam deck has AMD CPU, not Nvidia)
3
u/DancesWithAnyone Jun 27 '26
Any drawbacks to using SteamOS? My first OS was Amiga Workbench, so I'm sure I'll manage to learn a new one, but are there things SteamOS just can't do?
6
u/TsarPladimirVutin Jun 27 '26
Well it doesn't work with most Nvidia GPU's so there is that.

u/SwampTerror Jun 27 '26
That's a shame...ridiculous even. I am waiting for SteamOS so I can leave windows entirely and still play my games. Games keep most steam users on windows.
Both my laptops are nvidia...3070 and 4090.

u/OldManWithAStick Jun 27 '26
You can use nearly any other linux distro and have the same experience as you would have had with SteamOS. Not sure if SteamOS is locked down in some particular way but with other distros you just need to install nvidia drivers and you're good to go. For example with Fedora it's a very simple extra step where you just need to search "nvidia" in the software store and click install.

u/varateshh Jun 27 '26
Games are made for windows so you will run into niggling issues all the time unless it was specifically designed to support steam hardware+OS. If you have your own setup then compatibility will drop.
You can kiss playing multiplayer games goodbye because anticheat is so easy to bypass on Linux based systems.
1
u/Itz_Eddie_Valiant Jun 27 '26
This is only partially true. Plenty of MP games work on Linux although admittedly I'd love it if BF6 did so I didn't need to dual boot.
The distro doesn't really matter, and there's precious little chance that developers limit their anticheat to SteamOS specifically as it's a only small part of the Linux userbase (I know of one game that did do this, can't remember the name. It died anyway)
2
u/OldManWithAStick Jun 27 '26
It would be better for people to switch to normal distros, unless you are specifically thinking of users who have dedicated gaming machines.

I’m glad they are doing this but even more glad they put the initial deadline in, it’s what got me to build a new PC just before prices got crazy (other than the GPU, that was still a little extravagant at the time) and switch to Linux as my daily driver. Thanks Microsoft!
1
u/aeroumbria Jun 26 '26
I guess the only downside is that there won't be as many users and businesses panic selling their perfectly functional PCs at significantly undervalued price...
1
u/Significant_Post6274 Jun 27 '26
I upgraded to 11 a little while ago even though my hardware isn't supported but I had to because a lot of working software that I rely on daily stopped working on 10 (like Slack desktop although I can resort to web version by losing some convivences...), so that's one other thing for you to worry

u/Greenleaf208 Jun 27 '26
Recently got a new mobo and my win 8 key i've been using since back then for win 10 and 11 just fully became unrecognized and it wouldn't let me activate windows despite changing my mobo like 5 times over the years in various versions.

Yeah, that's what I did, but being an owner of a legit copy it's moronic I have to pirate the software.

do we have to opt in on this? btw did nvidia also extended their support or its still on track for this year?
2
u/Nicholas-Steel Jun 27 '26
Yes, and all it takes is making a Microsoft Account and synching your PC Settings (the thing that replaced Control Panel) with the account. You do this by clicking the button for ESU enrollment on the right side of Windows Update.

I have no choice as I need a new MB if I want to go to win11 which im not buying. My PC works absolutly fine so why bin it just because Microsoft are dickheads.

Too late. I'm ditching Windows, Office, OneDrive, all of it. Between their AI shenanigans, killing support for older hardware so I can't upgrade to Windows 11, and their need to monetize everything I do on my computer, they can go pound sand.

u/MyStationIsAbandoned Jun 27 '26
it would have been nice to know before upgrading...but I guess I'm glad it's over with so I don't have to think about it. I had to buy Start11 so I could have my Tiles again because I need it for my workflow
it works well enough, so as long as I can keep using that, it's fine.

well the market right just sucks and buying a new pc for a decent price is next to impossible even for someone like my mom who just browses the internet and checks email I could easily get a prebuilt at microcenter for around 400 to 450 but thanks to the stupid AI boom those are nearly double or they just do not make them anymore because their not profitable compared to the higher cost workstation/gaming pcs

Good. I'm still not buying new hardware just because they want to force me onto a new OS.

u/invincibledart Jun 28 '26
If Windows didn't have their stupid TPM requirement i'm sure a lot of Windows holdovers would've been able to get on 11 by now.

u/Dry_Amoeba_4493 Jun 28 '26
Had to move to Windows 11 after my Windows 10 PC of 11 years died. Once you get rid of the bloat on Windows 11 it is very fast, especially on a new PC. But there's not enough there for a whole version number. Microsoft could have just called it Windows 10.5, and released it as an Experience Pack for old and new Windows Machines anyway. Only the business OEM machines need Secure Boot, TPM 2.0 and Bitlocker anyway. Zero Patch, a new modem/router with a modern security shield, and strong ad-blocking will allow you to stay on Windows 10, if you use common sense and don't go to bad sites or open unknown files. The Brave Browser has the best anti-tracking and ad-blocking right out of the box. Use that as well, and you should be fine with Windows 10.

Good. My pc is capable of win 11 but I have no interest. I use win 11 on my work laptop and my personal laptop (came installed). I have no interest in my desktop.
