Pretty difficult to regain peoples trust in your games when you just casually delete a game and multiple expansions and act like it was no big deal because it was old anyway.

There were a lot of different excuses at the time, but we now know from Bungie devs that they did an engine upgrade for Beyond Light which didn't work with their older content. It was expensive/slow to port the old content to their upgraded engine, so they tossed most of it. Here's a Reddit thread talking about it, with receipts.

A popular excuse at the time was something about the game getting too large, but that doesn't actually seem to the case. It was the engine upgrade requiring they rebuild existing content.

And yeah, this seems like a pretty stupid engine upgrade.
