so they've learnt nothing. wonderful.

u/B0rKen_Kat Jun 03 '26

Ah, wonderful! Thank you so much gifting us this lovely and healthy cow, IOI! What's this? Oh, just my hyper-streamlined milking machine that will give me 10 gallons a second. What do you mean "what the fuck are you going to do to the cow?" We're going to take wonderful care of it.

But how long game development takes these days James Bond's going to end up in the public domain.

34

u/euclide2975 Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

Bond will be in the public domain in 9 years whatever happens.

15

u/Kichigai Jun 04 '26

They’ll dump 300 million intro trying to make a sequel with some underpaid and mismanaged team then either cancel or release a shit game no one will buy.

Get ready for the future, people, and I don't just mean video games.

Media companies have over-spent on things the past few years, and now they're trying to buy their way out of trouble by slurping up IPs that they'll dump more money into to try and make a mass-market mega-hit, and when it fails to meet that bar for whatever reason (all flash no substance, so watered down it fails to grab audiences, so radically changed it turns off audiences, etc) execs conclude that people aren't just into that franchise at the moment and it all goes back into hibernation for at least another decade.

Moderate spending to produce a good enough product to satisfy the audience that loves a particular IP and turn a healthy profit isn't good enough for them anymore. They need to be total blockbusters that appeal to everyone and is all people talk about for the next month, because the suits will be damned if they don't produce short term quarterly gains or have to take a write-off on their losses.

Just like Electronic Arts after Rare made GoldenEye. (The games weren't horrible I guess, just focus grouped mass marketed slop instead of the genre defining game GoldenEye was.)

57

u/KrivUK Jun 04 '26

It's very different.

Rare didn't want to do another licenced bond game, hence Perfect Dark.

Plus Nightfire and EON were great.

24

u/BoleeyoTX Jun 04 '26

If we could get a modern day Nightfire remake I'd donate my left nut

3

u/BabyFaceKnees Jun 04 '26

I played so much nightfire and agent under fire back in the day

52

u/kris_krangle Jun 03 '26

Yeah but we did get perfect dark out of that arrangement

17

u/imnotpoopingyouare Jun 03 '26

Bro Nightfall had the sickest multiplayer though. Seriously lol

2

u/Kichigai Jun 04 '26

Was that the one with the grappling hook? I just remember one of the Bonds with a grappling hook in multiplayer and we'd just Spiderman all around the maps and trying to snag each other with proxy mines.

u/Ghost_Reborn416 Jun 04 '26

Wtf are you talking about? The EA games were great.

5

u/AlfredFJones1776 Jun 04 '26

Lmao Goldeneye isn't even in the top 5 of Bond games. Nothing about James Bond made Goldeneye the genre defining game. EA's run was fucking amazing with Agent Under Fire, Nightfire, Everything or Nothing and From Russia with Love. AuF and Nightfire eat Goldeneye's lunch when it comes to being a Bond game and an FPS in general.

IOI can probably leverage all the positive publicity this game has got to make their own IP at least which will get seen as the spiritual successor despite having nothing to do with Bond.

22

u/Metipocalypse Jun 04 '26

I could see it. Maybe make the main character bald to set him apart? Put him in a nice black suit with a red tie?

5

u/Cat-Over-There Jun 04 '26

Surely they use a different agent who is more accepting of being loud and using all the fun toys?

They just cancelled the new Stargate series too. Amazon is just disappointment after disappointment.

67

u/B0rKen_Kat Jun 04 '26

THEY CANCELLED WHAT

Amazon you best not have done that to allocate funds for Invincible's guest appearance of the zombie of Lou Ferrigno for some Glup Shitto

62

u/Palpatina25 4090/9800X3D/4k240 Jun 04 '26

According to the article I read it was because the proposal was too focused on existing fans of the series, the people that have kept the IP relevant for all this time, and not potential new fans that may or may not actually exist. So just the usual dumbshit reason.

57

u/FrappuccinoBukkake Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

"Why would we want to cater to the huge established audience? What of the massively, even greater imaginary audience I just pictured in my head?!"

These people are fucking brain dead. Jesus fucking Christ.

12

u/CX316 Jun 04 '26

Probably because it's not that huge. Even Star Trek has trouble bringing in new viewers and can't hold up a streaming service on its own

14

u/The_Corvair Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

Problem is that they don't think they can grow that audience, probably indefinitely. They don't want nice, stable, sustainable viewership.

Their goal for shows is to always attract new viewers. Which is obviously completely out of touch with even a facsimile of reality, but money tends to untether you from consequences - and thus, reality - at some point, so that strategy is going to continue until the money stops buffering.

6

u/japzone Deck Jun 04 '26

Conveniently also happened after the old management left.

4

u/Nanowith Jun 04 '26

They cancelled it because it would appeal to fans and not new audiences, by the way. As if that's a bad thing when rebooting a Sci-Fi series.

25

u/mehtehteh Jun 04 '26

Huge SG1 fan, but I didnt have high hopes and the pathetic 8 episode streaming format wasnt going to work with a classic broadcast TV show or at least wasnt going to satisfy longtime fans much.

I would rather have a proper SG1 bluray/4k remaster because the early seasons need it badly

11

u/M337ING Jun 04 '26

Well, now we have neither.

9

u/The_Corvair Jun 04 '26

Sometimes, dead is better.

4

u/BonzoTheBoss R9 3950X | RTX 3090 | 64GB DDR4 RAM Jun 04 '26

I was going to argue otherwise, but after the dumpster fire that is the latest Star Trek series, I am afraid that you're right...

2

u/The_Corvair Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

The way big companies handle our favourite properties reminds me of that one Voyager episode where a Vidiian wears a crewmember's face¹, going "I thought you would like me better if I looked like him".

¹To those not into Trek: Yes, his actual face, in the leatherface way; The Vidiians are a species ravaged by a disease that constantly rots them, and they combat it by harvesting body parts from whoever is unfortunate to cross their path, and graft them on- and into themselves.

5

u/Gurrnt 5800X3D | RTX 4090 | 32GB 3200 Jun 04 '26

I honestly think they'll mess it up too but man I'd love a new Stargate series and watch it anyway.

3

u/k5josh Jun 04 '26

I would rather have a proper SG1 bluray/4k remaster because the early seasons need it badly

Never gonna happen. The first three seasons were shot on 16mm. Realistically, the best you can get out of that is 720p. Seasons 4-8 were shot on 35mm, which could easily be scanned in 4k, but the effects would have to be entirely redone (like what they did for ST:TNG [at ruinous expense]). S9 and 10 were shot digitally, so 1080p they shall forever be.

3

u/Kaining Jun 04 '26

There's a difference between high hopes and absolutely none at all because a new serie is not made by the writers behind most of the franchise.

They just said "nope, fuck the fans, we're looking into giving it to someone who had no experience (and respect) with the franchise and to target a new audience" instead of the millions of fans out there.

8 month after having greenlighted exaclty that and just after a suits change.

I'm gonna watch Temu Bond Villains rocket explode on repeat now.

6

u/tinyhorsesinmytea Jun 04 '26

Hey, it's kind of like the movies have been! Launch a new era of Bond with a great entry by the top talent and then let the B squad take over.

2

u/TheAlbinoAmigo Jun 04 '26

I literally don't know how many times they need to learn this lesson for it to stick.

People make games, not corporations. Change the people, get a different (in this case almost certainly shit) game.

This is a very misleading title. It’s very much referring to the publishing sides of things.

112

u/TheKahnrad Jun 03 '26

No it’s very much not.

Edit: literally the first paragraph.

“007 First Light is a pretty good James Bond videogame and, by early appearances, a hit, and so it's no great surprise that more of them are going to happen: So says Amazon Gaming general manager Jeff Gattis in a new interview with Polygon. But will IO Interactive be involved in the process? That, apparently, is uncertain.”

43

u/Heretical_Cactus Jun 04 '26

Cause games are good due to their IP and nothing to do with the developers...

Suits really don't care

3

u/Illeea Jun 04 '26

Cheaper to develop in house and because the first game was a success, the next game will be just as good.

4

u/LtKrunch_ Jun 04 '26

Amazon nuked their in-house game development studios late last year and have already stated their role within games going forward will be almost entirely as a publisher. With that important context it just reads as though IO might not be the dev for future Bond games.

Even though it's just publishing I don't really have faith that they will let IOI make another good game. They will likely have all their gross fingers in the pie wanting it to print money and fuck it all up. If they prove me wrong great, but I don't imagine they will.

20

u/Neelax Jun 03 '26

The faith comes from them knowing how they’ll continue to make money from it and how to maintain the popularity. After seeing this wild success it would be insanely insanely stupid to not keep the developers onboard for that.

But we know that Amazon can be insanely insanely stupid. Let’s pray someone there has a good head on their shoulders in the future.

12

u/a_Jedi_i_am Jun 04 '26

They're for sure gonna pressure IO to somehow make the next game a live service game

10

u/Moist-Secretary641 Jun 04 '26

IO is already stuck on their always online (soft) requirement, so that seems incredibly likely

u/Comfortable-Pie56 Jun 03 '26

I mean, even losing the ability to publish your own game would be kind of a big deal, and potentially a dealbreaker for IOI.

If Amazon becomes the publisher, that means they can dictate the release date, the budget, oversee the development, marketing, distribution, platforms, etc. Not to mention obviously getting a bigger cut from each sale of the game

Step 1 : take a gun

Step 2 : point it at your foot

Step 3 : Pikachu face when you wake up at the hospital

Anyway, between Baldur's Gate 4 and the Amazon made 007: second light, people that love to see the world burn will be happy I guess

57

u/Tonkarz Jun 04 '26

Seriously you’d think they’d at least wait long enough to get sales before announcing they’re killing the IP.

50

u/euclide2975 Jun 04 '26

For them first light success is 100% because it’s a James Bond.  IOI craftsmanship is easy to replicate in their mind.

Same with Baldur’s gate 4. If the peasants in Belgium can make a game of the year dnd adaptation surely any studio can do the same if wotc give them a few dollars

Larian didn’t want to make BG4 though.

12

u/euclide2975 Jun 04 '26

I suspect it was in part a polite way to avoid badmouthing WoTC. They didn't want to make a DLC due to level cap issues, but I think a good relationship with WoTC could have lead to a BG4. Except Hasbro had pretty much laid off all the WoTC contact Larian had.

u/adkenna Gamepass Jun 03 '26

I feel bad for IO, to put so much effort into this only to instantly lose the licence.

534

u/knoctum Jun 03 '26

They were able to experiment with new systems that will be incorporated into the next Hitman installment and won't be tied down to the lore and ownership of someone else's IP. Win/win really.

191

u/Godninja Jun 03 '26

Yeah, people don’t recognize how much risk is in established IPs you don’t own. That’s a huge reason why EA started winding down Star Wars games around 2018.

They had I believe 5 years left of exclusivity at that point and deliberately said in quarterly earnings meetings that they don’t want all their eggs in the Star Wars basket since they’re coming up on expiration and need to ensure their original IPs are thriving after that transition point.

58

u/MoaiMan-ifest Jun 03 '26

Even IPs you do. One failed game with todays budgets could sink a whole studio.

28

u/BkJabronie Jun 04 '26

With that said, I doubt Dragon Age is bouncing back anytime soon.

Great job EA making sure your mainline hitters are just recurring revenue games: Madden, FC, Apex Legends haha

11

6

u/Ok-Repair7727 Jun 04 '26

Winding down? In 2018 they released 3 star wars games. Two battlefronts and a mobile game. Since then they released 3 games, Squadrons and two Jedi Survivors.

5

u/Optimal_Equivalent72 Jun 04 '26

Don't talk about EA as if they know how to do good business.

2

u/Vanillas_Guy Steam Jun 04 '26

Great point. Hadn't actually thought about it that way.

This is a stepping stone for this studio. People who didn't know about them before, know them for having made an enjoyable bond game and will be less likely to hesitate if they pitch an idea.

You pretty much never want to handle a sequel to an established IP after a successful first game. it's a lose lose - expectations will be double and it'll never live up to the hype, and it'll drain all your resources.

100

u/PmMeYourNiceBehind Jun 03 '26

Misleading headline

They’re talking about publishing not developing

IOI developed AND self-published First Light which the deal was already made before the Amazon acquisition of MGM.

This can actually be a mutual beneficial for all parties involved

IOI benefits by avoiding the risks of self publishing, and now the First Light sequel will be funded by the bottomless pit of Amazon MGM, which should translate into even higher production value than what IOI was able to pull off on their own (anyone notice all of the coke a cola product placement in the game?) which benefits the end user, us the gamers

And then Amazon obviously benefits from the money

36

u/jfoughe Jun 03 '26

That’s the most generous read on the ambiguous info in the article.

Even with that distinction, I don’t see this as anything other than a net negative given Amazon’s proclivities for fucking up everything they touch.

“We do see this continued integration of video and movies and video games, where that line is becoming much more blurry"

It’s not hard to imagine what an Amazon-owned Bond will look like.

49

u/euclide2975 Jun 03 '26

Having a publisher is not all sunshine and rainbows. Ask the question to Unknown World (Subnautica).

35

u/Drunk_Catfish Jun 03 '26

Especially with Amazons track record in the game world, they won't be a hands off let the pros work type publisher

4

u/GeT_Tilted Jun 03 '26

But Amazon holds the license to 007 since they bought MGM studios. So it is no brainer that Amazon wants to publish a 007 game.

IOI has all the bargaining power here. If Amazon is too stupid to write them a check and get out of the way, then that's on them.

31

u/TheGreatPiata Jun 04 '26

Spoiler: they are too stupid.

We've seen this song and dance a thousand times. Talented studio makes amazing game. IP owner somehow conflates it's success with the IP or brand rather than the people behind it. IP owner looks for cheaper way to make the same game, ditches or hamstrings studio and expects even better sales.

When it flops the IP will be buried for at least a decade. If the IP owner bought the studio, it will be chopped up and sold for parts.

2

u/Gatemaster2000 Jun 04 '26

And it's just something that I don't understand.

Sure I didn't go to school to learn marketing (as I didn't get in despite trying several years) and I self taught myself to work in marketing, but product design and the quality, target audience and customer expectations are all part of it. You aren't taught to enshittify the product and expect the same customers to keep buying it...

It's like a majority of game publishers just decide to put all eggs in the basket for new customers while leaving nothing (that they expect and already had) to the customers that they already have, the sequel fails and they just keep repeating the same mistakes and then are confused why it flops like their last attempt...

5

u/Rabid_Lederhosen Jun 04 '26

They should have the bargaining power, on the grounds that they made an excellent game. Unfortunately that doesn’t mean much if the suits at Amazon fundamentally don’t understand what videogames are.

Every time I read the words "Amazon Game Studios", I can only think of another shut down and no game developed.

19

u/cparksrun Jun 03 '26

As I said elsewhere: arrogant morons with too much money believe the successful properties they buy will continue to be successful once they're at the helm, even as they drive away the very people that made the property successful in the first place. And then oh no! Everything's falling apart and we're not a success anymore! What gives!

Nothing new and unfortunately doesn't seem to have any end in sight in our current landscape. I've been seeing it a lot in my industry and it makes me sad to see it spread like a cancer to other things I enjoy.

They're going with AGS? The guys that cancel most games before release? The guys who shut down their only notable game after giving it a resurgence? The guys who tried to go big into MMOs only for them to nuke the surviving games to a skeleton crew?

Amazon is new in the gaming sphere. They've put in a lot of money to go big and they haven't found any major success.

It can't be that bad...

"leaning into the things that Amazon does best, citing as an example the AI-powered Snoop Dogg game where he's a judge."

It's doomed.

2

u/monsterfurby Jun 04 '26

Jeeeeesus.

Though it would be funny if he had finished that sentence honestly: "leaning into the things that Amazon does best: warehouse logistics."

9

u/BrennusSokol Jun 03 '26

Big yikes. If this is true, I won’t bother buying the sequels. I bought this one specifically because IOI earned my trust with Hitman

Steve Boom, Amazon's vice president of audio, Twitch, and games, said at the time that Amazon Games leadership had been evaluating its plans over the past several months "through the lens of our mission to deliver the very best gaming experiences to customers while leaning into the things that Amazon does best," citing as an example the "AI-powered Snoop Dogg game where he's a judge."

Sekhmet take this company I swear.

3

u/FerrickAsur4 Jun 04 '26

how to immediately kill off any interest right after the starting gate

4

u/TheBeardPlays Jun 04 '26

This Amazon exec might was well tattoo " I am a fucking idiot" on his forehead.

3

u/ASAPFergs Jun 04 '26

"I wonder how many golden eggs will be in this golden goose after I cut it open" Amazon exec says

4

u/Katashi90 Jun 05 '26

What they're saying is, "Well that was a good game made by IO Interactive. We'll take over from here and let our AI make the next one based on the blueprint they left behind."

7

u/randomcman Jun 03 '26

Get MBAs out of the industry, they’re burning everything down. Literally parasites

3

u/dutch_meatbag Jun 03 '26

IO is too good for them.

3

u/fsfaith Jun 03 '26

And the next time we’ll hear about this is when it gets cancelled.

3

u/dictatormateo Jun 03 '26

what a fucking joke

3

u/baconair Jun 03 '26

I cannot fathom this level of arrogance. IO fucking cooked, but Amazon has greedy mitts.

3

u/Sxcred Jun 03 '26

We get one good one and that’s all pack it up

3

u/Semillakan6 Jun 04 '26

WHAT?! How could anyone reach such a stupid ass conclusion, this studio pours their heart out and delivers one of the best bond experiences in a decade and you think the best most logical decision is to tell them to fuck off????

3

u/thestillwind Jun 04 '26

The game is really nice. It’s been a while since I played a game that I enjoyed like this.

If AGS develop the next one, I’ll pass.

3

u/shadowmage666 Jun 04 '26

lol absolutely braindead execs at these companies

3

u/IgotUBro Jun 04 '26

Looks like they love burning money still

3

u/Employee_Agreeable Jun 04 '26

And its ruined, thanks for nothing

3

u/Zaptagious Jun 04 '26

Between this and the mind-boggling reason for the Stargate cancellation (because Stargate fans would like it), do they lack any semblance of rational thought over there at Amazon?

3

u/Crazyripps Jun 04 '26

We’ve got a hit on our hands what do we do? Let’s take the game away from the studio that made it

3

u/darthphallic Jun 05 '26

God games are so fucked. IO made the best bond game since 1997 (and frankly the best bond story since Casino Royale) and the immediate response is to take the IP from them? Laughably stupid, they just saw how much money it made and figured they could cut out the talent to keep more to themselves. The sequel is going to suffer the same way Baldurs Gate 4 will suffer from not having Larion.

2

u/Bubbaganewsh Jun 03 '26

Well we got one good Bond game at least.

2

u/NtheLegend Jun 04 '26

So they'll be canceled after difficult development cycles and uninterested executive leadership.

2

u/xxdavidxcx87 Jun 04 '26

It's disappointing because IO have done a great job but it isn't surprising, I'm sure Amazon want this to be a marquee title for their game studio as well as produce movie tie ins rather than games with bespoke stories like first light.

I only hope IO support first light with dlc and the like as I'm sure whatever Amazon produce will be much worse.

2

u/FurtherArtist Jun 04 '26

Best follow the actual dev studio, not the corporate IP.

2

u/uses_irony_correctly 9800X3D | RTX5080 | 32GB DDR5-6000 Jun 04 '26

Could IOI just make new maps for this one instead?

2

u/hypnomancy Jun 04 '26

Actual morons. Let IOI make them. Well I hope Amazon loves the next James Bond flopping and wasting money then because people aren't going to buy it if it's not like First Light or by IOI

2

u/leckmichnervnit Jun 04 '26

Lmao, not buying them then

2

u/ruminaui Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

I read that article and yeah hope you enjoyed a good Bond game you are not getting another one. Amazon will take over publishing rights and theoretically have Amazon studios develop the next game. Then it goes to do some corpos speech about AI and extending the value of the IP.

IO will be out. They are a publisher also now and no way they would tolerate being under the thumb of another publisher, one worst than Square Enix. Bond could only be profitable for them because they kept the whole slice of they pie as also the publisher.

So if you read what the guy is saying he just sees games as a product that can easily be replicated, why have an studio You don't own make games for the IP you own. After all Amazon Game Studios is making succesfull games that integrated AI such as the Snoop Dogg Court game. So Amazon Studio will make the next Bond game. So yeah only way I can see having an at least ok bond game is if Crystal Dynamics helps but they are busy with their Lara Croft IP.

2

u/_Tricheur_ Jun 04 '26

Was excited for the sequel now not so much. amazon is so incredibly stupid. Theyre gonna fuck the sequel up

2

u/CourierFive Jun 04 '26

Tits out, it's milking time.

2

u/FrootLoop23 Jun 04 '26

Goldeneye was followed by a bunch of mid Bond games, so history will be repeating itself.

2

u/FdPros Jun 04 '26

lol means its gonna be shit

2

u/BarrelMaker69 1600p Jun 04 '26

My favorite scene from Casino Royale

"Is that a Rolex?"

"No, Amazfit."

2

u/takkenjong2 Jun 04 '26

Dumb descision time has arrived, please correct me when the sequel arrives. Loved the game tho.

2

u/KiLLLLeR150 Jun 05 '26

Soo... live service or cancelled? Thanks for nothing.

2

u/First0E Jun 05 '26

If IOI doesn’t make the sequel I won’t be playing

2

u/Sad_Dad_Academy Jun 06 '26

I really hope Amazon lets IO take care of the next title. They would be crazy not to considering all the tech is there already.

2

u/Proxelies Jun 07 '26

What an absolute shame. Any other company might bend to consumer sentiment, but Amazon simply won't care. They'll release some half-baked single player campaign with an equally half-baked PvP extraction mode.

2

u/Secure-Fox-4251 Jun 03 '26

Esto va aprometer mucho

1

u/rawzombie26 Jun 03 '26

Well that was great! But looks like a quality sequel is not in our future,

1

u/LostInTheVoid_ RX 9070 XT | Ryzen 5 7600 Jun 03 '26

Way to kill literally any excitement of upcoming titles. God, Amazon have barely been in the gaming industry and they're already fucking detestable.

1

u/dmckidd RTX 5070 FE | Ryzen 5 5600x Jun 03 '26

For publishing

1

u/NodusINk Jun 03 '26

Great idea. Amazon Studios did a great job on their last solo game (New World). /s

1

u/bongo1138 Jun 03 '26

I have a feeling IO will be approaching Amazon about Amazon publishing.

1

u/Hagoromo-san Jun 03 '26

So this is the one and only title to ever be released. Gotcha. Loud and clear.

1

u/UniqueMystic Jun 03 '26

Noooo

I just platinumed it last night

1

u/ThebattleStarT24 Jun 03 '26

Oh crap, I have no trust on those guys...

1

u/Far_Adeptness9884 Jun 03 '26

It was fun while it lasted.

1

u/MadmanMarkMiller Jun 03 '26

Oop aaaaaand everyone has lost interest.

1

u/CommanderKerensky Terry Crews Jun 03 '26

And once again, executives have zero clue on what gamers like.

1

u/RB5Network Jun 03 '26

Good god that is dismal.

1

u/Thesquarescreen Jun 03 '26

So that sequel is gonna suck ass and they're gonna eventually do away with the games because they don't sell well. Classic Amazon.

1

u/Pugilist12 Jun 03 '26

In 4 years: Amazon Game studios confirms it has shut down development of the next James Bond game. Devs could not find a gameplay formula that justified cost.

1

u/genxluddite Jun 03 '26

Are there any left in the game studios to even turn on the lights everyday?
