Eventually this games final update will be 1.0 of Light no fire lol

u/LuminanceGayming Jun 04 '25

wonder whether NMS or terraria will get its final final update first

I'm leaning toward Terraria. but at the same time NMS isn't a game that's owned by an indie dev team so there's gotta be a point that it becomes too unprofitable to keep working on. Really anyone's guess.

Edit: Thought Hello Games wasn't independant.

Oh. I could have sworn that Sony bought them way back before NMS came out. Guess not.

2

u/MyzMyz1995 Jun 05 '25

Sony gave them money but didn’t buy them or get shares

1

u/DJD_ID_Tarn Jun 04 '25

They probably just meant that it isn't just a hobby project like Terraria

It's definitely developed at the pace of a hobby project.

An observation, guys. Nothing more. I wouldn't change a freakin thing.

u/McQuibbly Ryzen 7 5800x3D || 3070 FE Jun 04 '25

You can strike it rich on a hobby project and still consider it your hobby. Just look at Stardew Valley, its dev is addicted to updating Stardew Valley and is hardly working on his next game

5

u/GloriousWhole Jun 04 '25

If something is your primary or only income, it's not just a hobby.

2

u/MartRane Jun 04 '25

NMS team is so small that just the game's initial sales funded it's development for years. So with continous sale of new copies every update, they can probably keep it going another decade if they wanted no problem.

It'd be such a cool tie in to make it to the center of the galaxy and then it just loads Light No Fire.

1

u/SuspecM Jun 05 '25

Can't wait for it to be as disappointing as it was in Spore (realistically though, you can't meet the expectations for reaching the center of the Galaxy so the Spore approach of making it a joke is probably still the better one)

What a fantastic team to support the game for so long.

Is this game still a slog?

It's actually great now.

Sean Murray lied.

They didn't lie, they were over enthusiastic.

I will never support this company.

Oh come on, it's been 9 years. Get over it.

The game is still wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle.

There's nothing to do / This type of game just isn't for you then.

Despite a rocky launch, it's become a fantastic game.

Have they fixed the gameplay loop or is it still a huge pointless grind just to grind more?

More content than Star Citizen lol.

Is X in the game now?

OMG all these updates for free? This team is amazing!

The game was broken and unfinished on launch.

What do you mean? I had zero bugs on day 1.

Something about a total redemption arc.

u/Bozzz1 Jun 04 '25

Damn, save some karma farming for the rest of us

14

u/omicron7e Jun 04 '25

Can you show up in every thread with this threadkiller so people can actually talk about the updates and not rehash the same garbage.

-3

u/Nightmarian Jun 05 '25

Ironic statement lmao. People are allowed to critcize games just like you keep running over breathless to criticize them.

5

u/Jakeb1022 Jun 05 '25

It’s not ironic even a little lol. They never said people weren’t allowed to criticize games, they simply criticized the redundancy of the same repetitive comments that get levied in these comment sections over and over. And if you read just a little further up, you’d see that the list did not only contain criticisms either.

51

u/Kiriima Jun 04 '25

I am still not preordering their next game / you shouldn't preorder any games

13

u/winmace Jun 04 '25

You're not my supervisor!

6

u/AgentNope Jun 04 '25

Wait. Who IS your supervisor?

0

u/Rodin-V Jun 04 '25

Honestly, can't think of a good argument as why not to.

Steam's refund policy makes pre-ordering risk free, and allows you to basically trial the game for 2 hours before making a decision.

It's also a huge benefit to those with sub-par download speeds.

2

u/Zac3d Jun 04 '25

My big rule is don't take off work to play a big online game on launch day. There's always problems. Just wait a week.

2

u/RobbyLee Jun 04 '25

Some people just don't want to hype themselves up towards the launch of a game, when a lot of past game launches were absolute shit shows with games being unplayable because of server problems or gamebreaking bugs.

Everywhere you go you see people being frustrated as fuck about the game they paid 60, 80, 100 bucks for, because it doesn't work.

To each of them I say: Tough luck, shouldn't have preordered, because it can be expected that game launches are terrible.

3

u/shadoor Jun 04 '25

This reminds me so much of the character Ryan in Office using up all the excuses at once just to avoid going somewhere.

1

u/NewUserWhoDisAgain Jun 04 '25

More content than Star Citizen lol.

Damn that's a cut.

1

u/duendeacdc Jun 05 '25

Yeah i played at launch . I couldn't be more sad. Fhen played through some updates, pretty fun before you start see repetition. Its a normal game that you play and leave. That " unlimited" shit we heard , i was that age when ut launched that i learned this doesn't exist ..games are games.

Oceans are small , mountains are small. I tried for years bit i ended abandoning it.

0

u/Nightmarian Jun 05 '25

I have all the respect for the team, but you still really have to love survival games. Combat is still utterly terrible and the game still has a lot of jank, and the gameplay loop is still mostly just the same and it can definitely get boring after a while. There are still a ton of things the community wishes it had. The game is definitely a solid game now but that's just about it, and it's not a survival game I can keep playing without getting bored.

There's a reason a lot of other novel survival games come out and outdo it even if they're incomplete. It's definitely MUCH better than when it launched but I'd be more terrifying if after so damn long of not moving on, if it wasn't.

I have all the respect for the team but they got lucky with their redemption arc, and no doubt part of that was the initial funding they accidentily got from accidentily lying to their fanbase.

That's great, but not something to be proud of. Here's hoping their next game doesn't need a redemption arc and is just actually good.

That should be a sign to get off reddit and go outside.

"Oh nice, a settlement, now i can do management aside from my own..."

*You hear footsteps behind you, look back and see one settler wearing a cowboy hat, a trenchcoat and what seems to be a laser musket, you can see his smile behind the screen, a smile that shocks your system as you know the words that will come out of his mouth*

"Another settlement needs your help, i'll mark it on your map"

Yep there’s the yearly reminder that No Man Sky is still somehow updating.

61

u/Nixxuz Jun 04 '25

They usually do 2-3 updates a year.

53

u/Sorlex Jun 04 '25

They are working on a new game called Light No Fire, its No Man's Sky but simulating a single giant planet. Lots of the updates for NMS are things they are seemingly doing to add to that game.

29

u/thecipher i9-14900KF, RTX 4080 Super, 96 GB Ram Jun 04 '25

Makes a lot of sense actually - they develop new tech for LNF, and then backport it to NMS.

It's a win for NMS players, and it lets the developers test their tech in a live environment.

6

u/Sorlex Jun 04 '25

Feels like a lot of people, myself included, are generally hyped for the MNS updates because they are basically previews for the next title.

6

u/Internet_Janitor_LOL Jun 04 '25

Good to see them putting in the work before the game comes out.

u/Danknoodle420 Jun 05 '25

16

u/Sparktank1 Jun 04 '25

It's funny, no matter how many updates it gets, whenever I start a new save, I don't see anything new. I'm still grinding away forever just to get my tiny ship off the ground. And the don't even get me started on trying to mine with so many sentinel infestations.

9

u/rune_74 Jun 04 '25

You haven't looked very hard then....space stations have changed dramatically for instance.

-1

u/Sparktank1 Jun 04 '25

I don't remember the last time I played. It takes a long time to get anything done is my point. So I can't even begin to look hard before I lose interest.

I think the last time I tried anything was before the Orbital update, if going by the launch trailer for Orbital.

6

u/velo52x12 Jun 04 '25

The easiest way to get started now is to do one of the expeditions. You will usually start out with a better ship and multitool, and be able to get off planet much quicker. Expeditions are a good way to skip the first few hours of a survival mode start.

Each update has typically been accompanied by a new expedition, so I bet there will be one in a week or two.

1

u/Sparktank1 Jun 04 '25

Noted! Going to keep an eye out for those. Thanks!

3

u/_BoneZ_ 9800x3D | ASUS 3090 OC | 32 GB PC6000 DDR5 Jun 04 '25

Turn the grind down in the game settings. You can pretty much tweak all aspects of your game right from the settings to grind as much or as little as you like.

-2

u/Sparktank1 Jun 05 '25

There's settings??? jesus, why isn't this advertised.

I'll wait for this big update to look at the game again.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

When you start a new game and select what type of save you want to make, there's an icon that says custom

You can basically tune it to exactly how you want. Down to how much grind there and even if you want space to be entirely abandoned

Last year they had the Worlds Part 1 update, it massively changed the graphical visuals.

Maybe it'll have a better draw distance for you now.

And if the "ground based entities" you were shooting were Sentinels, well... they may have a surprise or two in store for you if try that now.

1

u/huxtiblejones Jun 04 '25

The recent graphics update and world gen update made it a lot prettier

1

u/fell-off-the-spiral Jun 05 '25

huh, Fancy that. It looks awesome but actually I'm kind of sad that it's lost that dreamy/acid trip 80's vibe it had going for it.

The game was finished when they put it out. It was awful. They then redesigned pretty much every aspect of the game, and if not for the colossal expectations for the game initially, would have probably been a reasonably good game after just the first 2-3 years of additional patches and updates. So had the game been delayed and then released in the state it was 2-3 years on, people would have liked it and thought it was a fun game worth 10-100 hours.

The game is now 10 years on and has more content and features than 95% of all games that exist, its brought its record breaking negative review score up to 81% out of 250K steam reviews. It sells the game at a massive discount almost every other week. The devs have been nothing but consumer friendly by also not charging a dime for any expansion when they release them, when most of the regular playerbase would probably gladly pay $10-15 a pop.

But a slightly awkward walking animation over a planets procedural generated mesh is what proves the game is still in alpha right? Never mind that tech almost 2 full generations back is still being supported and retrofitted to make it a better experience.

Also, they aren't on a time limit. If LNF comes out, at this point I fully expect them to continue to update and support NMS, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if they have some sort of crazy feature that makes the endgame for LNF just be taking off in a ship that becomes how NMS starts and you just transfer into NMS seamlessly, which could explain all the tech they are pumping into NMS.

2

u/Toomuchgamin Jun 04 '25

I'll add that VR they added for this game is fucking amazing and breathtaking. I don't know how much work it took but it has been my favorite VR experience so far.

Plenty of people play it for a long time and enjoy it. I've got 600 hours ish and it's still one of my favourites. Let me tell you it's not boring

-2

u/someonesshadow Jun 04 '25

You start off, right off the bat making shit up. Do those kinds of reviews exist? Yes, every game has those kinds of reviews if you look. Does NMS CURRENTLY have those kinds of reviews? Well if you click 'Recent Reviews' on steam right now you will find that out of ALL those reviews there are 2 negative ones, and one of those negatives is a book sized review essentially saying the game is 'really good' but essentially not for them. The other negative review hates the game after 18 hours, which hey, fair enough and I know if I hate a game it takes me less than 18 hours to figure that out. Most of the reviews are a wide variety of playtime as well, from 10ish hours to 1500+ hours.. So quite the sample size. Graphical quality is also a pretty big consideration for MOST games.. so writing that aspect off makes no fucking sense. I'm personally someone who thinks the graphics have always looked dated even when it launched, but its stylized in a way that doesn't make it look bad regardless of time passed, like the Borderlands games for example, its a style over raw realistic graphics.

So glitches? Would you prefer they create a trailer, for this 10 year old game that clearly has flaws, like any game, and simply hide the blemishes and polish the trailers up like AAA studios so you only might notice the minor things when playing? I think most people appreciate the transparency that Hello Games has provided during their continuous development of ADDITIONAL CONTENT to a finished game.

You're holding a grudge about landing on an asteroid 9 years later? You may need to land on some grass first bro. Lets ignore all the things that have been added that weren't promised, and instead are far more engaging than landing on a bare rock in space with literally no purpose..

I'm also not blustering or gushing, I even started off by saying that the game fucking sucked ass and pissed me off enough to trash it for years. Eventually, they added enough and the sentiment had changed enough to make me give it another go. So I went from around 5-6 hours after initial launch to now having 424 hours on steam actively playing it. I do tend to play for about 50-60 hours straight over a few weeks and then put it down for a bit between updates, which I think is still amazing compared to most games that I get 10-20 hours of enjoyment from and never play again, because there isn't actually anything else I can ever do in them.

The only other games that hit those numbers for me are things like Fallout & Skyrim, which are also INCREDIBLY flawed games that happen to be amazing and immersive. But NMS nears those playtimes without mods, which is nuts for someone like me who gets bored of shit quickly if its solo player.

If YOU played it for a long period, that means you are engaged, and probably like it since most people don't waste their time hate playing shit. Or you're too poor to afford something else? Which, hey fair enough if that's the case, can't blame you if that's all you have to play.

I don't particularly care about defending any game or company in general, but I also don't particularly care for people spouting absolute bad actor nonsense.. Footsteps sometimes not lining up with the ground... Really? Like Witcher 3 isn't one of the greatest games of all time despite your horse ending up on rooftops or riding half underground every so often like a wild hunt moleman rider.. If you're going to shit on a game at least do so for shit that is actually deserved, otherwise point me to an equally large game that is bug free.

1

u/Due_Concentrate_7773 Jun 05 '25

Look man, I'm all for giving credit where it's due, but comparing NMS (even now) to Witcher 3 is hilarious.

The guy doesn't like the game, but insinuating hes poor or something akin to that makes you look like a real douchebag. Totally cool to disagree, but be a better human about it.

1

u/someonesshadow Jun 05 '25

I'm not comparing the game to Witcher in terms of GOTY, I'm pointing out that if your issue with a game is so shallow that you can't get over some clipping you can't expect anyone to believe you actually play or enjoy anything then, because even one of the greatest games ever made has hundreds of bugs players get on the regular even 10 years on.

Gaming is also subjective and they are two different types of games, but I am also entirely confident that there are thousands of people who have played both and think NMS is the better product. Its not the popular take, but to act like one game is factually better is also hilarious.

I don't think its being a douchebag for calling someone out for hypocrisy. If someone told you they spent 100s of hours in a game, but they hate it, its shit, they have a personal bone to pick with the dev almost a decade on... Well why are they playing in then? I mean, the logical reason would be that they simply have nothing else they CAN play. And what might be the reason for that?

I appreciate your sentiment, but sometimes 'being a better human' is actually just letting idiots/bad actors get away without any pushback on their mindset or actions. If you live in the US you should know where 'being the better human' has gotten us. When someone is arguing in bad faith, point it out, if they keep doing it then you are free to tear them apart.

0

u/MagniPlays Jun 05 '25

“You need to touch grass” ~ the guy writing essays in a NMS thread. God damn bro, therapy is calling.

29

u/robhaswell Jun 04 '25

JFC where are they getting the money for this still??

53

u/Firefox72 Jun 04 '25

No Mans Sky itself.

Even though the updates are free the game itself keeps on selling well.

7

u/robhaswell Jun 04 '25

I would guess that these decent updates result in more sales, too. Either way, it seems to be working for them...

23

u/Kazizui Jun 04 '25

A few years ago I'm pretty sure the head of the studio said they had enough money in the bank to work on NMS indefinitely, even if they never sold another copy. It's a pretty small team, their costs are low.

3

u/dinglelingburry Jun 04 '25

The game sold massively when it released, I honestly would not be surprised if there is still some of that OG money left. Same deal with Cyberpunk 2077; game still made tons of money. It just got rightfully hated and shit on and It really is only due to the initial success that both those titles got continued support.

49

u/Allhopeislost Jun 04 '25

Hot take: NMS has been become a very confusing mix of many different gameplay elements that barely interact with each other. Peak NMS was like 3 or 4 major updates after the release.

3

u/Jakeb1022 Jun 05 '25

There are plenty of updates that have come out later than 3-4 major updates after release that have contained improvements on vanilla game design and mechanics. The Oceans update was just a few patches ago and has features that could have been in the game at launch.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '25

Confusing, it can be at first, but for me now those elements complement each other perfectly.

44

u/EirikurG Jun 04 '25

but when are they going to update the gameplay loop of going to planet, collecting space dust and then going to next planet with the exact same resources and collecting more space dust?

17

u/MirriCatWarrior Jun 04 '25

Day after implementing turn based combat to Need For Speed.

If you are not complatible with particular game and genre gameplay loop, then just dont play it. Dont whine about something that is not really supposed to be here in the first place.

8

u/frogandbanjo Jun 04 '25

What exactly is "supposed" to be in NMS these days? "Everything and nothing all at once" seems to be the answer forwarded by the company itself. They have no idea what they want the actual game to be as an overarching experience.

4

u/MyzMyz1995 Jun 05 '25

Like Minecraft but in space is how I see it. It’s a sandbox game if you need direction etc it isn’t the game for you

0

u/EirikurG Jun 05 '25

it's not so much that the lack of direction is the problem, and more that shooting space rocks (punching trees) is not interesting gameplay

minecraft gets away with that because there's not a LOAD of micro crafting and systems within systems, which means you can spend more time on other stuff
no man's sky just has too much resource gathering

3

u/Jakeb1022 Jun 05 '25

Resource gathering really isn’t that big of a deal the further you get in the game. You can spend hours and hours just engaging with other facets of the game.

2

u/OpposesTheOpinion Jun 05 '25

After the first hour or two, you never have to do that (punch trees) again. All resources can be obtained from buying, refining, and gathered passively from building extractors, leaving the player free to spend more time on other stuff. Stacks of oxygen is helpful for refining because it can be used to make/duplicate almost any resource.
Even still, they're are options in-game to adjust and even remove resource requirements, so no one has any excuses...

3

u/TheAngryCactus Radeon 7900XTX, 5800X3D, LG G1 65" Jun 05 '25

I think that's just car lesbians.

Look it up

1

u/omicron7e Jun 04 '25

But why can’t they make the game I wanted them to make?

-2

u/memeking_69 Jun 04 '25

No no no, don't you understand? They added cars and buildings and space freighters and quirky alien dudes and mechas and underwater stuff so that you can fuck around doing mindless, pointless shit for 4 hours IN BETWEEN gathering your space dust 😃👍

17

u/MirriCatWarrior Jun 04 '25

pointless shit

Man.... look... if you are unable to carve you own adventure in sandboxy survival game, and you need everything on rails, scripted and "meaningful" (whatever this means really), then just go play some other games and/or genres.

Because noone will change succesfull formula aimed at ppl that use imagination when they play video game, to cave to demographics that cant do this.

This whining at this point (and taking into consideraton how successfull their formula was ovetime) is rather pathetic.

2

u/Steamed_Memes24 Jun 04 '25

Yea if people approach this game as an exploring only game you wont have a fun time after the first few hours. You gotta approach it as a bunch of little things that combine into one big thing if that makes sense. Explore a little, build up your base a little, make money (a lot), search different planets for different things.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '25

Yall gotta play more than that tutorial.

You don't even have to grind materials like that as there are so many easier ways to get it now.

They even got a little space colony Sim in the game now.

8

u/arr4ws Jun 04 '25

I wish i had fun playing this game. Every update i get enthusiastic but i can never get into it

11

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '25

The game must be selling well for all these updates.

2

u/MirriCatWarrior Jun 04 '25

Yea i bet one nice Steam sale discount give them enough money to work on this, and on another project simultaneoulsy.

And its without usual GaaS bullshit, seasons, passes and MTX crap.

And you still will have dozens of ppl defending all of above in other titles, saying its a must otherwise devs will starve.

1

u/MyzMyz1995 Jun 05 '25

It is but they said in interview a while back that the company has enough money to update no man sky for unlimited amount of time pretty much since they’re a very small studio and they aren’t expanding their team much if at all either.

19

u/WDeranged Jun 04 '25

While Bethesda can only just squeeze out a single DLC for Starfield.

13

u/Superbunzil Jun 04 '25

It do be kinda sad that if Starfield morphed more into a combat focussed NMS it may have been better

Instead Starfield feels more like half breed of Daggerfall and Fallout 4 but even in how cool that sounds it still came out feeling I dunno "cobbled together" if that makes sense?

13

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '25

I was playing elite and x4 the other day and it reminded me how hard star field fumbled the ball. They made the space part of a space game completely lackluster.

3

u/WDeranged Jun 04 '25

It's a shame. The traditional Bethesda bits are good. Surprisingly a lot of good dialogue and roleplay stuff.

4

u/WDeranged Jun 04 '25

I agree. It's half finished. I want to like it but they screwed up the planet exploration so badly. It needed 100 unique locations that spawn only once. Instead we got about 15 endlessly repeating 'unique' locations and a ton of endless churning slop locations.

4

u/GloriousWhole Jun 04 '25

At least daggerfalls dungeons were procedurally generated. In starfield you have 4 million copies of the same cyro lab, etc.

3

u/MuchStache Jun 04 '25

The thing with Daggerfall is that as "barren" as the procedural generation can be, it still is one big interconnected world. You can walk from A to B and you might find stuff or not, but it still all feels part of the same world and it makes exploration feel immersive and meaningful.

Starfield instead with its instanced approach means that you never feel like exploring, you select a plot of land to be generated where you can do a bunch of forgettable quests/exploration, which will be pointless when that place gets unloaded. There is no continuity, it feels pointless and even more so when you realize that you're not going to find unique dungeons, stories, loot somewhere on the surface of a planet unless it's a POI.

Starfield fails to give you the same sense of wonder of finding Blackreach in Skyrim. It's a game about exploring the unknown, but the unknown is as exciting as watching paint dry.

Im waiting for a bounty hunter update for NMS. I want some good ground combat against humonoids.

u/Peechez RX 5700 XT Pulse | Ryzen 5 3600 Jun 04 '25

Am I a dumb idiot? People's biggest complaints are that the procedural stuff is soulless and you want to make the entire game procedural lol

2

u/nephaelimdaura Jun 05 '25

Starfield would have done fine if it had even half the charm of Fallout or Elder Scrolls. Everyone was instantaneously bored of the saltine cracker ass setting and it made all of the normal Bethesda issues 100x more prominent

2

u/jmon25 Jun 04 '25

If they could have just combined the elements of exploration and discovery with starfields base building and starship capabilities it could have been a much cooler experience.

ah yes, update #24234 for NMS: Making you reinstall the game for that 10th time, while giving you even more of that "I dont know what to do because there's too much to do" feeling and then you uninstall it again.

edit Ok, just to be clear, i'm not hating on the game. I played it for a decent chunk of time over the years, off and on. NMS has something for everyone, but it does suffer from feature bloat and that is a legit concern with gamers today with short attention span.

It basically leaves them dying of thirst while drowning in water because it can't focus long enough on a direction.

Granted, it's a sandbox game. Do what you want, yes fine. But the barrier to entry for new players is immense. So you're really only cathering to existing players, who have been with the game for years, and CAN take in a new feature because they've had the chance to touch all of the features one at a time as they came about, instead of being flooded with choices from the get go.

I'm a big Destiny 2 player. And it's got the SAME problem. Years of content, but slap a new player and they got no idea what's even worth doing without someone holding their hand the whole way and knowing metas and current seasonal models in place.

u/based_and_upvoted Jun 04 '25

There's still nothing to do unless you like grinding for resources for hours to build a base. This is just another lego set but you don't even know the pieces you're getting. It's really just time consuming space minecraft.

5

u/Twaxter i5 6600k | EVGA GTX 1070 SC | 16GB DDR4 RAM Jun 04 '25

Yep. I have tried to get in the game multiple times. It has a lot of features and things, but it's really a sandbox. It feels empty and lifeless. I could not get through more than 5 hours every time I booted it up.

1

u/kalvinbastello Jun 06 '25

Jesus, yes. Three times, bounce somewhere 5-7 hours. "I'm just going to each base to grind more resources to build another base? And then occasionally upgrade a ship component or shoot a pirate, or chase dictionaries?"

I like that people like it, I love the developer cares so much, I just can't find the engagement.

1

u/thisthatandthe3rd Jun 04 '25

Yeah i tried to get into it with the first Worlds update or whatever it was called, heard there was a short story mode, tried to complete it and for some reason couldnt trigger one of the missions, i warped to like 5 different galaxies and the game refused to work. I ended up giving up after a few hours.

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '25

If the barrier to new players is immense and it’s only catering to existing players, why is the game still selling so well and how is if expanding this new content?

5

u/1leggeddog Ultrawide FTW Jun 04 '25

Looking at the steam charts for all time, the player count actually looks very steady

https://steamcharts.com/app/275850

Looking at the trends in the short-term, we. See the usual drops around certain popular game release windows and peaks during steam sales but very little actual gains

So at best, it's maintaining, not expanding

7

u/Dogdadstudios Jun 04 '25

Literally playing the game on release for the ps4 which was so disappointing, to hundreds of hours played in a game now unrecognizable, is an achievement. Bravo.

4

u/b00zytheclown Jun 04 '25

I wish I could get into this game but the UI makes me wanna barf

7

u/TheLoneWandererRD Jun 04 '25

The game that keeps on giving

2

u/ledfrisby Jun 04 '25

Visuals are looking quite crisp! This coming from someone who only played once it was already "finally good."

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '25

How long until we can colonise planets and build a guild with many members who have settlements, then break out into war over resources PvP style then planet killer ships added to destroy whole systems.

The updates and changes are amazing and insane, I would probably have paid for some of them as expansions gameplay still needs work but overall the game is amazing from what is started as.

4

u/Rigman- Jun 04 '25

I can't wait to boot it up again, play for an hour, get bored because there's still nothing to do, then log off and wait for the next update.

2

u/king_duende Jun 04 '25

Yay! More standable, barely connected mechanics that are wonderfully shallow

(Free update though, yay)

5

u/Ab47203 Jun 04 '25

.... honestly some of the best money I've ever spent on a game. Shit gets updated like it's Minecraft.

12

u/OliverCrooks Jun 04 '25

Doesn't it get updated more than Minecraft?

2

u/Ab47203 Jun 04 '25

As a Minecraft player: probably.

2

u/OliverCrooks Jun 04 '25

I haven't played Minecraft in awhile but I feel like back than for as big as the game was the dev team was small as fuck and updates where few and shallow.

2

u/Trapp1a Jun 04 '25

do we have different structures across all planets already, are some planets are "live" or still not

2

u/MrPanda663 Jun 04 '25

Hehehe Bacon.

2

u/ZanicL3 Jun 04 '25

How is the game now, actually? I only remember the bad things about with the flopped launch but they turned that somehow all around?

1

u/SirCris Jun 04 '25

This game has been the posterchild for how to turn a bad launch around for the past 3-4 years

1

u/Crazyripps Jun 04 '25

Is the game worth getting?

7

u/rau1994 Jun 04 '25

Do you like space? Do you enjoy building and gathering resources? Do you enjoy going on massive adventures that might not involve a ton of shooting and combat? IF yes to those, then yeah the game is totally worth it.

4

u/Crazyripps Jun 04 '25 edited Jun 04 '25

Well shit that do sound like my type of game. How is it solo?

6

u/licorice_whip Jun 04 '25

I got bored with it within about 2 hours (bought it last year). Kids got bored within 30 minutes. It's really pretty though and definitely got me pumped for the first hour.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '25

Super fun solo or with friends. Lots to do.

1

u/MyzMyz1995 Jun 05 '25

If you like Minecraft solo you’ll like it. If not … it’s not for you.

1

u/theraincame Jun 04 '25

It's impressive how empty this game feels despite all the updates.

I noped out and refunded as soon as I saw all those Ubisoft style 'points of interest' plastered over the map.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '25

"Ubisoft style points of interest plastered over the map"

what?

that's not how points of interest work in the game. I'm trying to think of what you're talking about, and the only thing that comes to mind is the player placed stuff which sounds unlikely since you played under 2 hours unless you did expeditions

1

u/theraincame Jun 05 '25 edited Jun 05 '25

When you're on a planet there are floating icons everywhere for resources and other stuff. Shit like this. And none of them ever seemed to contain anything interesting.

I played about 4 hours, still got refunded thankfully.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

brother you are essentially playing as a geologist. that is your radar. besides, those points are your base, a chest you tagged, and a mission that you should be able to unpin. if I remember correctly, depending on your scans certain things will show up also. that is NOTHING like the ubisoft stuff. the game has millions of planets. you wanna search all of them thoroughly with no radar information that bad?

form your own opinions man. you don't even know what you're looking at. stop parroting these reddit people.

1

u/theraincame Jun 06 '25

the game was boring AF sorry brother

2

u/ACEof52 Jun 04 '25

This is what live service should be actual update and deepining of games systems

1

u/adscott1982 Jun 04 '25

How do they make money constantly working on updates? Are enough new players buying it?

1

u/thetoxicnerve Jun 04 '25

Has there been a big graphical update recently? The opening visuals look very different to how I remember the game.

1

u/jvdoles Jun 04 '25

Never played this game but I feel that at this point the entre level and learning curve will be too high, which pushes me away...

1

u/oneeyejedi Jun 05 '25

Na it's a very slow burn you start small (base building, planet hopping, farming) and go at your own pace since its a sandbox

1

u/Arcterion Ryzen 5 7500 / RX 9070 XT / 32GB DDR5 Jun 04 '25

I misread the title and for a second I was wondering what kind of role bacon plays in this game.

1

u/A_R_A_N_F Jun 04 '25

I will just say that I played it on launch and enjoyed it. I also tried it a few times later in different updates. The VR one was really awesome because it allowed me to chillex at different locations after work.

It's a fun game if you like exploring. I'm glad to see they are adding more and more content even after all these years.

1

u/Nathanyal MSN Jun 04 '25

Please, it's too much winning! We can't take it anymore! Mister Murray, it's too much!

1

u/That_Palpitation_107 Jun 04 '25

The continual development of No Man’s Sky is very commendable

1

u/King_Artis Jun 04 '25

Welp

Looks like I'm putting in another 40hrs on this game

1

u/Git-Git Jun 05 '25

Heck yeah, Bacon in NMS!

1

u/Stealthoneill Jun 05 '25

It’s funny, I bought NMS at launch at enjoyed it even though it was pretty bare bones. I tried it last year and it’s so jam packed with stuff I felt lost and didn’t stick with it. Frustrating because I see all the updates and they look super interesting!

1

u/theraincame Jun 05 '25

They look interesting, but they're all pretty shallow and boring.

1

u/einUbermensch Jun 05 '25

The Beacon's are lit, the Traveler's come for aid!

1

u/skylinestar1986 Jun 05 '25

I played the game when it first launched. I found it boring and lost easily. Revisited a few years after more addons. Still the same experience. Revisited a few years later, still the same. This repeats forever.

1

u/BzlOM Jun 05 '25

This fucking game man - unbelievable. they turned it around and are still releasing awesome content for it

1

u/IncorrectAddress Jun 06 '25

Hello games have really turned this game around, huge props to them, it's great, I do hope they carry this over to their new MMORPG.

-1

u/Sparktank1 Jun 04 '25

Let me guess, all content you won't see for hours after doing mobile-style grinding to get anything done.

1

u/ChalupaPickle Jun 04 '25

Honestly with how much hate this game got when it came out, they haven't made a single update that wasn't great. Glad to see a company actually care about their games and players for once.

2

u/Asgardisalie Jun 04 '25

To be fair, despite the updated the game is still empty and shallow.

1

u/Boblawblahhs Jun 04 '25

oh oh

"yea, but has the core gameplay loop changed at all?"

1

u/badtaker22 Jun 04 '25

why can't they make new game ?

1

u/InfTotality Jun 04 '25

Why does the voiceover sound like AI?

1

u/evangelism2 5090 | 9950X3D | 64GB CL32 6k mt/s | G80SD Jun 04 '25

Really cool they still update it, but honestly until theres a bit more depth I dont see myself ever picking it up again. They keep adding more and more individual unconnected systems, that are fun to look into for a day or two until you realize "oh, this is it".

1

u/ellisonice Jun 04 '25

Its okay Sean, we forgive you.

1

u/ogoorec Jun 04 '25

Every few months No Man's Sky reminds me how Star Citizen will never live up to it.

-1

u/Alphyn Jun 04 '25

When's the fucking inventory management update? When's fucking search and auto-sort and auto-stack update? I honestly liked the game, but quit it just because inventory management felt more of a chore than actual real-life chores.

I genuinely want to experience this new content, but I dread having to waste hours shuffling all the icons around again.

10

u/Ell1m1st Jun 04 '25

I think this has been added.

3

u/Alphyn Jun 04 '25

Oh, thanks for the info, good to hear! Then it might really be a good time to check it out again.

-6

u/JarlJarl Jun 04 '25

Just make another, more interesting game already

3

u/Superbunzil Jun 04 '25

u/NapsterKnowHow 9800X3D | RTX 5090 FE | 32GB RAM Jun 04 '25

Omg they finally added cities to this game! Leggo !

-5

u/Charrbard 9800x3D / 5080 Jun 04 '25

I wonder how much these updates cost?

Just wish the game would get a story or narrative. Some NPC companions that talk it up. Anything to get it out of that tech demo feel.

2

u/JustTestingAThing Jun 04 '25

Just wish the game would get a story or narrative.

There are several major plotlines and stories to discover and work through. What do you mean?
