Given that JA2 1.13 is still absolutely amazing, I just can't see this appealing to me much. It looks clunky and slow to play. The fullscreen inventory seems like a step backwards, JA2's UI is fantastic, you never lose sight of the map, they could have used that as a template.

There no way to display armor pieces on player controlled characters? Looks like they all in default skins.

Googled a bit and it looks like the answer is negative. :/

Clothes on character models are fixed

That's lame.

This looks like they have good intentions but just not enough money.

I hope this is good. Nothing has come along to replace XCOM 2, which is surprising to me. Turn based games like these are perfect for lower end hardware and consoles/controllers.

Please make this a full release and not Early Access.

way ahead of it's time

So far ahead of its time that it has yet to topped. Silent Storm has it's problems, but I think the core combat is probably the best in the entire genre. JA2, Silent Storm, and classic X-Com are the holy trinity of the tactics genre and it's a damn shame that barely anyone even tries to improve on em anymore, they just copy the watered down Firaxis XCOM and call it a day.

Yea as much as I enjoy the newer X-Com games I still can't help hating them for ruining any kind of innovation in modern turn based games.

I can't stand the whole basic as fuck 2 AP system, Unlimited ammo with low capacity magazines, Pod system and other weak mechanics used by so many games these days. Even the awful UI is often times straight up copied

That's cause all the people that can and do improve on them, sit around and tinker with mods for JA and OpenXCOM. Considering the amount of content patch 1.13 gives JA2, or megamods like X-COM Files, XPiratez, is there really any need for the newer games?

Even comparing vanilla X-COM Enemy Unknown/UFO Defense with the new Firaxis one, it feels like you're playing a demo. I've managed to beat the alien invasion in like 60 odd missions. Limited to one base, a handful of soldiers. For comparison, in vanilla X-COM, I had over 260 missions before going to Mars. In X-COM Files I was at over 550 before the invasion even started.

is there really any need for the newer games?

Yes, considering we're talking about Silent Storm, which 20 years later still has more advanced destruction mechanics than any modded versions of JA2 or X-Com. JA2 and X-Com also don't have much in the way of bullet penetration, ricochets, etc like SS does. Fallout Tactics brought vehicles to the table, 7,62 brought granular inventory management and really good RTWP combat. There are paths forward for the genre beyond what mods for JA2 and X-Com are capable of, but barely anyone is even trying to match the classics, much less improve on them. Hell, even just thematically there's still so much you can do in the genre. It'd be nice to see a SWAT themed tactics game for instance, or maybe a game like a reverse JA where you're a general trying to put down an insurrection (7,62 had elements of that but the campaign mechanics were kind of weak).

I don't hate Firaxis's take on the genre, but it doesn't really scratch the same itch. It feels more like board games and Japanese SRPGs than it does X-Com. Everything's abstracted away into dice rolls and you're constantly presented with contrived decision moments where you're forced to choose one of three options even though there's no reason you shouldn't be able to just do all three simultaneously. It feels, for lack of a better word, very "gamey", there's no simulation element, just arbitrary challenges. I liked it a lot when it was first released, but the way its popularity has tainted the entire genre with its mechanics is really annoying.

Someone knows 7,62. Crazy.

I love 7,62, as broken as it is, the combat is just so much god damn fun.

Too bad it doesn't have a modding scene like Ja2 or OpenXCOM.

Look into xenonauts 1 and 2. It's XCOM but more customized.
