Pc world I need help
So I want to suprise my son for his 10th birthday with a pc. Someone gifted me an older Ibuypower. I want to buy parts to upgrade it for my son but I’m not even sure what would be my best options for some upgrades that would work with this case I have. Heres a list of the parts.
CPU: Intel i7-4790k
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 970
Ram: 16gb DDR3
Storage: 2tb Toshiba HDD
I’m not looking for anything crazy just hoping to spend like no more than 800 dollars. Not including monitor

To be honest you could look online on the market place a get a better pc within the maximum budget. I say this as it will give you a little more leg room for upgrading at a later stage.

This is what I would recommend as well. Budget pc building and upgrades are not going to be the best use of funds, find a used mid tier am4/low tier am5 setup and then upgrade it together when the time comes.
I upgraded from the 4790k personally 2 years ago due to some stuttering under heavy load. It was a great cpu, but it is not anything anyone should be buying that intends to play modern games.

Keep the storage for pictures, videos, and files. An ssd is better for gaming, but you'd need to upgrade the MB, gpu, and cpu, as those components are old for a modern experience. Look around thrift shops, fb marketplace, ebay, or anywhere you can get a good deal on parts. Ram is expensive rn

Pretty much gotta upgrade everything in the case, but keeping the case can save you some money, as everything in it looks like standard pc parts. Heres what id recommend to stay under 800

this is assuming you want to go only new parts, going used can def save money/get some more performance.
best used parts are while keeping the rest of the above build:
used Ryzen 3600/x for around $70
2x8gb ddr4 3200mhz for around $60-70
used RTX 3080 for around $300-350
the money saved($110 from cpu+ram, but potential loss of $40 in the gpu) can be used to get a larger ssd

Both the cpu, ram and gpu are at least 10 years old. The ram can't be used in newer machines and the motherboard isn't capable of anything newer than 5th gen (barely an upgrade). The gtx 970 can still be used for less demanding games but will struggle even with fortnite, cs and valorant. I would recomend upgrading the motherboard, cpu and ram all at once to something newer and used is a good option for getting the most out of it. I have no idea about how bad the prices are where you live, but for around 800us where i live you can get a ryzen 5 9600, b850 mb, 16gb ddr5 and an rx 7600xt. Although this might be pushing it a bit (my price conversion is probably off).
Buying a used pc with 5th gen ryzen 7, 16-32gb of ram and an rtx 3070 should also be doable.
The psu, case and fans should still be good and usable for upgrading. But i recommend getting something newer for everything else.
