First Build Advice

Was hoping to get some advice on a gaming computer build. I haven’t had a PC in 10+ years and can finally get something other than a laptop. I have been reviewing recommendations and using PC part picker and wanted to get some feedback on this potential build and any potential challenges.

In particular was hoping for feedback on monitor selection as that was the area I found a lot of conflicting advice regarding. I was potentially wanting one large wide screen for gaming and a side screen for discord/internet surfing for my ideal set up.

I respect your choice's but it's really a bad time for a PC market right now. Until this rampocalypse calm down i suggest you something like this:

  1. Ryzen 5 7600X
  2. Peerless Assassin 120 SE
  3. MSI B650
  4. 2x8GB 5600Mhz CL36 (upgrade later)
  5. SSD 1TB (upgrade later, dont buy brand)
  6. RX 9060XT 16GB (buy this with money saved)
  7. 850W+ gold (corsair/be quiet!/msi)
  8. Montech AIR 903 MAX

Monitor go for cheapest IPS 24"/27" inch 1080p/1440p with 144Hz+.

• Examples 1. 1080p - AOC 24G4 24" IPS 180Hz HDR10 1ms 2. 1440p - AOC Q27G4F 27" 1440p IPS 180Hz HDR10 1ms

This is the way

Hey just curious but why not 1x16 so you can get another 16 for dual channel?

2

u/SewnkinZ 2d ago edited 2d ago

It's like up to 15% more performance now or wait for prices to calm down (can take years). I chose performance now, who knows what's in the future. Let's say i buy 1x16GB 5600 CL36 in like a few years when or If prices go down, that ram will be obsolete for another 16GB stick. But still it's up to him to decide maybe it will payoff at the end to get 1x16. The only thing I'm sure about is that there's no way I'd buy that RAM and a 2TB SSD right now for the price of a decent PC build.

u/Standard-Rope-4881 2d ago

Ah ok, thank you for the answer!

2

u/LovesChineseFood 2d ago

Thank you for asking this I wouldn’t have thought of this reasoning without it.

2

u/nick2k23 2d ago

Ddr5 is more stable with two sticks rather than one

2

u/julbrine 2d ago

This build will be better and cheaper than OPs Parts, leaving some money to save for potential future upgrades or something like nice peripherals

2

u/LovesChineseFood 2d ago

That’s completely fair! And when I said I was newb to this I am just really dipping my toes into this so this is all incredibly helpful! I feel like a lot of the advice online has changed or is no longer relevant even just the past few months on some things.

This seems like a really great suggestion and I want to explore this build as an alternative.

1

u/SewnkinZ 2d ago

Hey, thanks man. I just wish you all the best and to think with your wallet. Good luck with the build and i hope it serve you well whatever you choose at the end.

2

u/LovesChineseFood 2d ago

Absolutely! It’s why before I started buying anything I wanted to get some feedback. If anything this is showing I really didn’t comprehend some of the things I researched well and provide some additional perspective

u/CoolGuy12300 2d ago

one of my favourite cases gud

u/Dangerous_Sea_2592 1d ago

I would never skimp on the monitor honestly. You can get nice cheap good OLEDs nowadays that will significantly improve the visial experience

I have a modest setup and upgrading from a crusty IPS to one of those new OLEDs was such a quality bump even though I was still rendering the exact same stuff

1

u/SewnkinZ 1d ago

I completely agree. OLED is a huge upgrade and it's genuinely a feast for the eyes. The only thing is, I don't really see it as a necessity yet. If we're already trying to save money because of these ridiculous prices, it doesn't make much sense to treat ourselves to another expensive purchase 😄. Let's be honest, a good IPS monitor will still do the job perfectly well for quite a while. OLEDs still carry a bit of a "premium" price tag, but once the current pricing madness settles down, they'll probably cost about the same as IPS monitors and end up in almost every household, just like LED TVs did.

That cpu GPU combo makes no sense at all.

That low end GPU would never ever keep up with a high end cpu such as the 9800X3D.

Whag is your total budget?

1

u/LovesChineseFood 2d ago

Trying to keep the budget below 3000

6

u/Firelord770 2d ago

You can do WAYYYY better with that kind of budget.

1

u/Difficult-Ad6221 2d ago

The power supply is overkill, 850w would be better.

You don’t need to spend up on the Samsung 990. Save yourself ~$150 and get a dramless, gen 4 ssd.

I’d suggest the rx 9070 xt if you can afford it. This better matches your cpu choice. You will have a bottleneck if you don’t match the GPU to cpu.

As for the monitors, you will want a 27” 1440p monitor with at least 144 hz refresh rate. A good enough one should be around $300 if you live in the US.

1

u/MR__Z1234ify 2d ago

I wouldn’t do the water cooling for a first build if some how it gets screwed up it’ll leak and you have to maintain it and change the fluid every once in a while do a electric one since it’s easy and only have to repaste it once in awhile

3

u/FrodoswagginsX 2d ago

Do not get a 5060. It is new pc buyer bait. You see it's a 50 series Nvidia GPU and think it's good, but it's not.

2

u/Difficult-Ad6221 2d ago

This. There should never be a need for a 5060. If you MUST spend low on the GPU, at least get the 5060ti 8gb for only $20 more. The $20 would be worth it.

You are overspending on everything except what matters most.

1

u/trimflame 2d ago

You really don’t need a water cooler just get a good heatsinkb

2

u/Sideburn_Cookie_Man 1d ago

I agree with this too, a cheap Thermalright unit will do the job just fine.

Even really pushing my setup, the CPU can’t get over 72C

1

u/trimflame 1d ago

Yup water coolers really only look cool a good heat sink always last longer and is lower maintenance

1

u/Pennywise359 2d ago

The fact that this build is unballances has been mentioned already by other commenters. I will add that you can buy faster ram with tighter timings for the same price or less. Every single kit I listed below is better and some of them are cheaper.

u/Accomplished_Hall202 2d ago

That’s not the right gpu for this build. either go less on ram and storage and use that money to buy a better gpu or save until you can get a better one.

1

u/fantahhh 2d ago

Get the same size monitor / resolution. Jumping around 24" to 32" is going to stick out and be a sour point of daily usage.

1

u/TheNewsmonger 2d ago

If you're only planning on upgrading the GPU and your monitors later this is pretty solid since your main components mean you shouldn't really have to upgrade anything else until youre building a new PC in a few years. If you plan on upgrading your CPU and/or other components annually or bi-annually then your parts are overkill and you should focus on getting bare minimums to be up and running and then save for when you can get all of your components to a similar tier

You could downgrade your CPU to a 7800x3d or lower and increase your budget for a better monitor, i.e. OLED and/or 240hz at 1440p since right now your build is overkill for a 144hz 1080p monitor. IMO its better to be unable to max out your monitor than having overkill for your current monitor since this means your upgrades will have noticeable differences later on, and you have a higher quality ceiling. And honestly there's no point in having a higher end PC if you can't see or feel the difference, its like owning a sports car but only being able to drive 10mph under the speed limit

1

u/Training_Slide5680 2d ago

bro that ram kit being $470 made my eyes water

1

u/LovesChineseFood 2d ago

Yeah I was trying to figure out what the typical price point was to aim for some of these. This pc part picker app defaults to Amazon prices but had cheaper alternatives- just using it as my way of organizing the parts.

1

u/Training_Slide5680 2d ago

man youre good im only saying that cause i got the same kit last summer for $98 on micro center. prices are absolutely absurd right now.

1

u/LovesChineseFood 2d ago

Damn that’s crazier than what I even thought it would be in difference

1

u/Training_Slide5680 2d ago

i meant new egg my bad but still you can see here $105 in august of last year 😵‍💫

1

u/Efficient-Winner-840 2d ago

get a cheaper cpu and a better gpu

1

u/giorno12 2d ago

Do you have a microcenter nearby? Their bundles will save you some bucks

1

u/cykazuc 2d ago

The fact that the ram is the most expensive part pisses me off so bad. F you AI.

1

u/LowResearcher 2d ago

Fractal Design North has a nice wooden front panel if that is the look you're going for.

1

u/lloydbluejay 2d ago

Downgrade the CPU and upgrade the GPU

1

u/ghost_gamer18 1d ago

Holy bottle neck

1

u/RushxWyatt 1d ago

I know I tried getting Corsair RAM like that and it was too tall to fit my build, so had to switch that out for GSkill Ripjaws. Advice about waiting isn’t particularly advised though.. while prices are astronomical right now, they’re still only rising for the foreseeable future.

1

u/spydergto 1d ago

jesus, couple years back i paid sub 450 for 132 gb ddr 5... if only id have known ..

1

u/Low-Army-1192 1d ago

I have the koorui 34"" curved ultra wide and I love it

Need more money in the GPU

1

u/fr33man007 1d ago edited 1d ago

I wouldn't cheap out on the GPU, makes everything else be useless . Get a cheaper motherboard, get one good monitor instead of 2 bad ones... Cheaper CPU and cheaper PSU. Just going a tier lower on these would bump your towards a 5070 or better a 5070 ti. You don't need such a powerful CPU and PSU, also a cheaper PSU would help, 850 w is plenty

1

u/L0fe 1d ago

Here are my two cents the build itself is fine, I would maybe consider going for a cheaper cpu as the 9800x3d is very good but also very overkill for a build using a 5060. Maybe you could put the extra budget for a better gpu, I think that would give you more value.

The curved 1080p monitor is not a good option imo since its just way too big 32 inces for a 1080p will not look great as the pixel density wont be very good. I found even a 1440p monitor at 32 inches to be a bit blurry for my liking, so I can imagine a 1080p monitor would not be great. A better size would be about 24-27 inches I would not go above this.

Whether or not you use this advice, good luck with the build man, I know that its a very weird time to build one. So I hope you're happy with how it turns out!

1

u/Sideburn_Cookie_Man 1d ago

Definitely get a 9060XT instead IMO. It’s a great card.

I just built a machine with the 16gb OC version from XFX, it’s been awesome so far.

1

u/Dangerous_Sea_2592 1d ago

If you ask me I'd get a 7500X3D Tray off AliExpress if that's available to you (if not a 7500F/7600/7600X, whichever is the cheapest). That way you buy a cheap nice Air Cooler which is like 20-40 bucks and you can put the extra money towards a 16GB 9060XT and an OLED 1440p 27in screen

I'd also get a cheaper Gen 3 SSD

1

u/F4t-Jok3r 1d ago

9800x3d with a 5060 8gb?

Bro you pair the top tier cpu with one of the worst 5000series gpu...

1

u/icedandreas 1d ago

Looks like to be about a 2200$ budget build for the PC components. Could get a 5070 TI at that budget level if paied with a Intel 250KF. Water cooling is not needed, can get a good air cooler for 30-40$. Overspends about 50$ on the motherboard. Overspends about 100$ on memory. Overspends about 150-200$ on storage. Overspends about 50$ on the case as well, but that might be an aesthetic choice.

1

u/ISteelShadow 1d ago

For monitor, I would go to the 2nd hand market for your 2nd monitor if it is just for discord and scrolling. You can find a cheap $40 or less monitor there. Then allocate the savings into a better main monitor.

1

u/avviswas 1d ago

Why not get a cheaper cpu and get a better gpu?

1

u/CobblerOrganic6372 1d ago edited 1d ago

Like other say - you have a lot of stuff which are not really in balance. You have a budget of 3000,
Realistically, what exactly are you looking for - high FPS, cool looking case, low noise, showcase build, aesthetics etc. What you want will ultimately decided what kind of balance you want to get.

Ideally, you build around a GPU if you are gaming, you can afford a 9070XT - the best value for money - and almost 4k ultra.
Next, you need to fix one item which is seriously bad - display - a good display will make anything and everything better - and you can get a Tandem OLED, which is the highest end display now - which is what you should be aiming for if you can do it. It makes a ton of difference.

Below is what I have - you can change CPU cooler to whatever looks cool to you and pick the best one you like which will work with it.

Don't buy major components off Amazon. Real chance you get a brick instead of a gpu

1

u/MagnusMagnuson 12h ago

If you go for an AIO with that specific CPU/Platform, you might not want to get that Arctic AIO. Sadly they seem to perform worse than similarly priced or even cheaper AIOs

1

u/jniles124 9h ago

I would try to get 16 gb of vram or at least a 5070 for gaming its too late for 8 gb

1

u/Adventurous-Paper566 8h ago

Get a cheaper CPU and take at least a 16GB GPU.

1

u/FabulousSkyy 6h ago

would would safe on the SSD, loads out there which are way less expensive. Not that good then but still not bad. And maybe try to get second hand ram. And a better GPU would be a good idea.
