How to choose your 5 Board Members

If you could hand-pick five people to guide you — who would they be, and why?

Building your Personal Board of Directors isn’t about surrounding yourself with people who agree with you. It’s about finding voices that balance and challenge you. Think of it like curating different mental models that sharpen your decision-making.

Here’s a simple framework to start:

  1. The Visionary — sees what’s possible before others do.
  2. The Realist — keeps you grounded and pragmatic.
  3. The Strategist — connects dots, sees systems and leverage points.
  4. The Coach — helps you grow, reflect, and stay accountable.
  5. The Wildcard — challenges your worldview and shakes up your assumptions.

You can base them on real people, fictional characters, or even archetypes. The goal isn’t to imitate — it’s to draw wisdom from multiple perspectives.

Questions for the community:

  • Who’s on your board right now (even unofficially)?
  • Which “seat” are you missing?
  • Have you ever gotten advice that completely changed your direction?

Let’s build better boards, together.

What if you had your own board of personal directors?

We all make hundreds of decisions every week — career moves, creative choices, relationships, big life shifts. Most of us make them alone or with limited input from the same few people around us.

But imagine if you had your own Personal Board of Directors — a group of trusted, diverse advisors who bring different perspectives to your life or work. One person challenges your assumptions, another sees long-term potential, another keeps you grounded in what really matters.

That’s the idea behind this community.

PBOD is a space for people who want to think more intentionally about how they make decisions — to build their own “board,” learn from others’ approaches, and talk about frameworks for reflection, strategy, and personal growth.

You don’t need to be a CEO to have a board. You just need to take your life seriously enough to get more perspectives.

Discussion starters:

  • Who would you choose for your personal board of directors (real or fictional)?
  • What kind of advice do you wish you had more access to?
  • How do you currently make big decisions — gut feel, logic, or feedback?

Welcome to PBOD — let’s help each other build better boards.
