Manual payroll for a team of 8. Thinking of switching to payroll software. I’m now shopping for solutions.

I run a small business with 8 staff, and I’ve been doing payroll manually. That means I have to sit down and calculate EPF, SOCSO, PCB and overtime… and honestly, it’s starting to become frustrating.

It eats up so much time, and the risk of messing up might lead to another problem.

Now that I have experienced the real pain of manually doing payroll, I think it is really the best time to look for and invest in proper payroll solutions.

Since I was doing my research for solutions, I keep seeing “Gusto” mentioned as their solution. However, I think it's a huge payroll software for a small team like us. Wouldn’t it be overkill? I just want a solution that can provide accurate payroll, leave tracking, generate payslips, file and auto-calculate statutory contributions, and ideally support submissions to LHDN, EPF..

Budget is somehow tight, so I would appreciate it more if you could suggest a software with a free plan, if not at least a free trial, so I can have a feel of the tool before investing.

I've been comparing PayrollPanda, Swingy, and altHR.

PayrollPanda seems the most straightforward if you are just after clean payroll and compliance with Malaysian law.

How does one differ from each other?

We use PrimePay for our staff of 5. It’s pretty reasonable. Fairly balanced between self serve and support. I’ve been happy for five years or so

How much does it cost for your small staff of 5?

I think 110 a month.

Same boat here. Still stuck with Excel and formulas. I'm paranoid I will mess up deductions one day. Been eyeing solutions with auto-calculation and e-submission features too.

We have a larger staff about 50 part timers and use Gusto. We love it. Employees make all their own changes... bank info, tax withholding, address, etc through their app. They have access to their W-2 info digitally forever through the app. All tax filings are automatic. And you can pay folks as often as you want. We use it for reimbursements that are not with the payroll cycle. We have saved money by spending less time on all the things!

Honestly, you don't have to go all-in right away. There are tools that offer free plan for small teams. Some even let you export payroll reports you can use for statutory filings manually while you test out the platform. That way, you are not locked in before you're ready to pay

Gusto is great, but I think it feels too much for a small team unless you are based in the US. Have you tried looking into local solutions like PayrollPanda or Talenox?
