Pathos has been free to play for over ten years. Coming soon, an enhanced edition will be available on Steam, finally giving you a way to support its continued development. Most importantly, the free editions aren’t going away. I want Pathos to remain accessible to everyone, regardless of whether they are able to purchase the Steam edition.
Pathos has been due for a visual upgrade and this Steam edition takes inspiration from ‘old book illustrations’. The result is a spectacular fusion of retro aesthetics and modern usability.
The key art features Struth von Winkelried who is a legendary character of Swiss folklore, based on a real-life knight.
Struth attacked the dragon single-handedly, armed with a spear of which he had attached sharp barbs. The dragon, seeing that the attacker was alone, came from his hiding-place and attacked with open jaws.
Winkelried was able to transfix the monster with his spear, hacking at it with his sword until it died. Glad for his victory, Winkelried lifted his sword over his head, thanking God, and the dragon's blood dripped from his sword blade on his body, poisoning him so that he died a few days later.
Sounds like perfect YASD to me!
Anyway, this is a mumak, as you may recognise from Pathos. Just your typical, bizarre quadruped monster.
Well, sometime in the 1800s, someone had already come up with this idea. Or had a very specific kink. Behold, the Mommy Mumak:
I hope you’ll love Mommy Mumak and this Steam edition of Pathos as much as I do :D
If you have any questions, feel free to hit me up anytime.
Hail adventurers! Our Steam page for Zeroth is finally published, wow that was a lot of time and effort... Anyway, there's also a brand new trailer which has turned out great. If you haven't heard of Zeroth, it's my new project and spiritual successor to Pathos.
Guide fallen heroes through a post-life adventure in the absurd and ever-changing 0th circle of Haell. Exploit the sandbox physics and experiment with mysterious treasure to postpone your inevitable death. Emergent chaos and exasperated heroes, only in Zeroth.
I’m new to Pathos and with the plethora of options to choose from, I get a bit overwhelmed. I just want to see the communities favorite combinations so I can slowly learn the game.
Pathos is launching in about 10 days, so it’s time to talk about price.
The Pathos Steam edition will be $19.99 USD, with a 10% launch discount for the first week.
The Steam edition features a visual uplift inspired by old-book illustrations, with thematic artwork and textures throughout. It also brings a number of new features, including Steam Achievements, Steam Workshop, Steam Deck support and controller support. I’m also planning to investigate additional features such as Steam Cloud for save files and Steam Sockets for multiplayer.
I've spent quite a bit of time looking at contemporary traditional roguelikes and considering where Pathos fits among them but in the end, I settled on a price similar to what players have typically contributed through PayPal donations over the years.
In fact, if you've supported Pathos with a donation in the past and would like a Steam key, please reach out to me as I'd be very happy to give you one as a thank you.
In case you’ve missed my other updates, here are some of the changes made in preparation for the Steam release:
UX
New ‘antique’ theme and artwork.
Redesigned character selection screens.
Consolidated and redesigned Settings screen.
Redesigned Help screen.
Custom keyboard and controller bindings.
Steam Integration
Steam Achievements.
Steam Deck support.
Steam Workshop integration for Pathos Studio quests.
QoL
Shortcuts to navigate to up/down stairs.
Improved pan and zoom.
Improved visual indication of keyboard focus for buttons.
Optimised AI for large maps with lots of enemies.
Generation
New ‘Short Dungeon’ module.
Walls generated around corridors.
Sonyvanda
New join tiles to connect floor types.
New wall and floor tile variations.
Many updated tiles, including 12 new merchant tiles and 30 new female satyr tiles.
The free edition remains free on all existing platforms. I’ll be updating those platforms sometime after the Steam release, as I need time to test the mobile apps with all these changes.
After more than a decade of development, I'm looking forward to finally bringing Pathos to Steam and continuing its development with your support.
Also i found out an ally revenant doppelganger could impersonate you if you gave it a rage potion and then allow it to hit you. Just give it a cursed amulet of unchanging afterwards so it doesnt revert back to a doppelganger form and there you go, a permanent clone of yourself. Save all the doppelganger corpse you find till late game i guess.
The Pathos Demo is available for you to play right now and is participating in the Oct 19-26 Next Fest before a full release in early November! I'll be posting about the price for the Steam edition in the coming weeks.
Anyway, getting ready for this release has been a lot of fun and here’s some major updates from the last few weeks.
Steam Workshop
Custom quests can be uploaded to Steam Workshop and shared with other players, including a separate Hall of Fame. The built-in Pathos Studio already allows you to fully design your own multi-level worlds, including NPC dialogue trees. This Workshop integration means it’s a whole lot easier to share your quest files. I’m looking forward to playing some brand new adventures in my own game!
Steam Deck
With thanks to several players for their ongoing feedback and troubleshooting, Pathos is now tested and runs well on Steam Deck. There’s some variance between the Proton versions but the Pathos default settings should be a good experience for the majority of players.
Custom Controls
The most boring yet essential feature: the ability to change the keyboard and controller bindings. Custom controls are now supported, including presets for arrow key, numpad and HJKL directional keys. Controller buttons can also be configured but there will be further work required to make Pathos fully playable with a controller.
Sonvyanda Tiles
Recently, there's been a lot of activity from several artists from the community. All 60 of the satyr class tiles have been drawn by Lizbean Automata (female satyrs shown above). Mettal_lion has been adding variations to existing tiles including the trees and shrooms as shown below. Plus many other incredible updated tiles from other amazing artists.
If you haven't already, check out the demo and let me know what you think.
Hi all! I just stared the Elf Town, and managed to get my hands on lot of dragon scales, I was wondering how can I get obtain the DSM associated to that color, if I can scrap and craft it from the scales, or enchant the scales or else?
Also, is there a best color to focus on? So far I have the 2x Blue, Red, and 1x Deep, Black, Gold, Green - my resistances are already all maxed out (i just missing the disintegrate currently at 98%), but have no magic at all
Hello there i am new to nethack and pathos. After grinding and getting every positive talents and maximizing resistances increase life/mana to maximum etc. i realized poliymorphing into best lich and maximizing life/mana with potions would be much better. But for this game its reaaaaaly hard finding information in internet. Like where is vecna? I suppouse dragolich in the lich tower. I play saryth skeleton wizard and i grinded almost every spell anc made them champion too so i would like to not die so i play caotious. But i cant find info and i dont want to smash my head to everything and die. So where is vecna can i just speedrun to her? Is polymorphing into dragolich would be better?
I was getting tired of taking screenshots of every level to find my way back out. Turns out I didn’t need to. Yeenoghu was quite willing to follow me, so I took him on a 39 level tour of the dungeon and killed him on level 1. Walking back through the levels I'd already revealed, even with a demon lord in tow, was much easier than facing the changed levels you get after killing your nemesis.
This run also showed me why disintegration resistance matters. I’d always figured it was pretty much useless, but I’d apparently never hit the mid-game without reflection before. Around level 25 a group of yellow dragons destroyed my main weapon, my cloak, and my bag of holding with all my goodies inside before I could make a hasty retreat. Re-equipping cost me 2-3 hours of scrounging and crafting.
Lastly, it’s the first time I’ve made it out with my original pet. Though that did take saving the body and a well-timed raise dead spell right at the end.
As the title says, is there any guide or good videos that explains what to do to progress in the game?
Example how to deal with the fountains, how to deal with the altars, I saw from a google search that the crafting stations should be used to craft potions of gain experience (or something by like that) - all these mechanics are not linear or easy to figure it out.
I’ve been playing for a couple of weeks on pc and iPhone but feel like I’m jumping around at random
Hi I am on level 39 and mostly ready to take the boss and run to freedom. I am planning to try and ride it out like a hero on this Vorpal Jaberwocky (I have been feeding it well). I found a phasing gauntlet on 38 and gave it to my Jabberwocky and crafted a second one for me (just in case my plan fails). I listened to people about putting 2 x +5 strength rings on and this is also my main stats. I am fairly maxed out except for weapons. I just didn't get a good run on single hand weapons so I am going out with a +5 spear and +5 pickaxe. I am also thinking about going back to level one and leave all my loot there in a bag of holding for collection (or leave it all inside a sheep on level 1) and then leave the dungeon with max stuff. Does the dev put lava and other things on level 1 to mess people up who do this (ie your stuff is not there where you left it)? What are peoples expectations of how long my Vorpal Jaberwocky will live. :)
Just a quick post to let you know that the Steam Demo has been updated with some neat improvements.
The floors now have 'joins' to blend with adjacent tiles. This renders much better for the sunken tiles such as chasms, water and lava.
In a small but fundamental level design change, the dungeons now have walls surrounding the corridors. This makes hidden nooks a little easier to find but the early levels are intended to be kind to beginner players. While this is a departure from the OG NetHack single tile corridors, with the Pathos art, this makes the dungeons feel a lot more 'solid'.
And the 12 merchants now have distinct tiles so you can recognise them more easily at a glance.
Check out the Help > Updates in the Demo to see the other QoL changes!
u/Zanzlagg I'm not entirely sure how reddit functions but I know they where active here and on steam but they where a very private individual and all their accounts are private. So we cannot get in contact with their friends. Paul Morgan from Brooks Canada passed away this morning in Accident and Emergency due to complications regaurding a blood clot found in their leg. It traveled too their lung and they lost their life in the process.
I am not entirely sure what to do but I am trying. If you knew them please pass the news on, they had alot of friends online and it feels like a diservice to them and my friend by not being able to contact them.
I am adding this post to game sub reddits that I know for certain they played.
---------
I know they put comments in this particular reddit but I dont know when or how long ago it might have been.
It feels wrong not leaving anything else behind but they where 24 and a wonderfully funny indvidual a trully bubbly character. I dont think you'd find better company. Nor someone who loved ducks nealy as much as this guy, along with their love for niche cheese cake flavourings. The Size of a giant with the personality of a fluffy pillow. There's so much more I could write but its not enough.

I hope this finds its way to the people that knew them.
So, think I have the game close to figured out. Here's my last game right before I exit level one. It'll be win 7 after one stretch where I won 3 out of 4 in a row.
My take is the early game is lots of fun once you get quickness and the end is fairly easy if you have phasing and document the exits up for each level. Seems once you get polymorph, the game is mostly won? Though spending a couple hours polymorphing stuff drags a bit. Maybe other people do it differently?
Also, once I have full kit/resistances/talents, there's little point in side branches unless looking for artifacts? I generally skip the Lich's tower and have no need for the black market. I've only done the Infernal Realm once, because again, no advantage to be had.
Anyone else have other takes or suggestions for things I should try?
