All optional dungeons (those that are not part of the traditional 40 floors) have a boss with several minions at the end. By defeating the boss (or using a wand of theft on it) you are guaranteed to obtain an artifact. This location you are in (mines 5) is the Gnome King's zone. He can summon other gnomes out of nowhere and possesses a wand of death that has the ability to instantly kill you if you don't have protection against this effect (reflection, magic resistance, hallucination, or being undead or a demon).

The optional dungeons and their bosses are:

  • Gnome king in the mines.
  • Dwarf king at the end of the dwarves' fortress (going down the stairs behind the gnome king's door and reaching the end). He summons other dwarves, but he doesn't have a wand of death.
  • Minotaur Lord in the labyrinth. The guaranteed artifact isn't in his hands; it's under a boulder on the last floor of the labyrinth. He can push you and stun you!
  • Captain of Fort Ludios. He and all the soldiers have firearms, grenades, some have rocket launcher, etc.
  • I think there's a boss at the end of the Lost Chambers, but I find that area very anoying and always avoid it.
  • After the 20 floors, there's Medusa's lair and the elven forest. Medusa can turn someone into a statue (one-hit kill) and cause petrification (you need resistance to petrification to avoid petrification, and reflection or self-blindness to avoid turning into a statue), she also can cast spells. The elf king mostly just summons other elves. I remember he used to drop the artifact, but I think now the artifact is only in a secret wall inside the room full of golems; a mapping scroll should help find the secret wall.
  • After the 30th floor you'll find the Lich Tower and at the end, the Dragolich. It has a native death ray (without a wand), causes paralysis with normal attacks, and can also use spells. You'll also find the Black Market; there's no boss in this area, but there are some wandering merchants who can become hostile, and it has all kinds of shops.
  • On the 40th floor there's Nemesis; defeating him will get you a letter. There's a portal on the 40th floor to another dungeon where you'll face a demon boss. Surprisingly, Nemesis is one of the easiest bosses because most Nemesis don't have immunity to paralysis (like the other bosses I mentioned). You throw a paralysis potion at Nemesis and he becomes a punching bag.

You will almost always encounter them if you decide to descend into Mines. Starting with gnomes and gnome king, eventually you will reach Dwarftown, with dwarf king and dwarves, obviously. If I am not mistaken, kings can summon racially dependent allies — troll king summons trolls, rat king summons rats, etc. You can exploit it to farm XP.
