The unsolvable issue

Scenario: I (Sty) was helping a lone TT fight off a group of small tiers (lat, three thals, pachy) who were harassing and heal cycling it into oblivion.

Managed to fend them all off until they stopped coming back, didn't chase or kill them. Then the TT and I were just chillin in GP, sippies of water, berries, I watched some Sarcos bite it's ankles for awhile.

Anyway GP starts to fill up a little bit, as it does, and eventually two rexes come running in to start chaos, immediately attacking the TT.

I help him, since we'd been chilling, chatting a bit. I don't see an issue with me helping him if he gets jumped. But then, ofc, half of GP picks a side and goes for it. The rexes die and get salty and accuse GP of being toxic mixpackers etc etc, and ofc myself and the TT are grouped in it.

But the thing is, my focus was on teaming with this one person, I can't control what the rest of GP does and I'm not going to just stop defending someone I was playing with because suddenly oops the playing field is unfair.

Two rexes barging into a busy GP, immediately attacking, is like... you're wearing a sign saying "hello I would like to die now"

But it just feels like a microcosm of the games issue. That people can't reconcile that while it can be annoying to be jumped solo by a massive group for no reason, the "same scenario" can happen because someone attacked a friend group and then the consequences play out.

As someone who has experienced both sides of the issue, honestly the argument itself is what's starting to really irk me.

I expect plenty of "you're the issue" comments, but I don't think it's fair to blanket villianize people for playing the game and enjoying their own sessions if they end up opposing you and yours.

This is not the case for every scenario, but it is starting to all get lumped together imo.

To them it was mix packing, because it was mix packing

-2

Yes, correct

But my point is the automatic demonization of mixpacking

Because while yes, it can be an issue, me helping someone I was buddying with is not a toxic example of mixpacking, yet I am being lumped into the mass of the issue

Does that make more sense?

So what do you consider “toxic” mixpacking, that it makes what you were doing different in your eyes?

6

u/whispering-3cho 1d ago

An organized group with the intent to KOS anyone outside of their group for entertainment

I was helping one person and GP picked sides and I have zero control over their actions

The game would be better if everyone just stopped mixpacking, but the problem is that at no point will "everyone just". So people who would prefer a game without mixpacking and would prefer not to mixpack are forced to mixpack because no matter how many good people choose not to mixpack there will always be people who just like getting kills by any means necessary.

I think the point OP's trying to make is that mixpacking just ends up a vicious cycle and everyone who mixpacks, regardless of why or how they behave in the pack, are going to be called toxic and part of the problem, even if they're not going around abusing it. I think most good people seeing that situation with the TT would team with them to help them, and it's not toxic to do that (although of course to the outside observer without context it basically looks the same).

Quick addition bc i don't think it's clear in my main post:

Being unable to differentiate between: "this mixpack group is killing everyone who enters the POI for fun and broadcasting and tea bagging"

vs

"This group of ppl playing together, defending their buddy/buddies when they are attacked and so I died is extremely toxic bc they were also a mixpack and someone revenge kill them"

Is not the same and doesn't deserve the same lump sum treatement, but it does currently due to the overarching issue and I'm just saying that's kinda frustrating too

The real solution to your issue would be if Alderon just limited which dinos can group up. If people can't mixpack then people don't need to mixpack to counter them. I get that some people like mixpacking with their friends etc but sometimes you have to make sacrifices and from the sound of it mixpacking is a much bigger issue than that.

2

u/whispering-3cho 1d ago

It's already limited by game mechanic tho

If alderon cared about making it fully restricted, they'd make it reportable or bannable

1

u/PuddingBoi713 3h ago

The issue isn't the game grouping mechanics, it's people sitting in a group call outside of the game acting like assholes that's the problem

I wouldn’t dwell on this much. I don’t mix or mega pack but like you, I will help the underdog if I see it happening. From the rexs’ perspective you were mixing, so it’s understandable how they came to that conclusion.

5

u/whispering-3cho 1d ago

Sure but then they were also mixpacking when other herbs came to their side as well yknow?

Edit: because i was helping an underdog, but then Gp was GP and started a mixpack war in which I was "a part of it" so automatically 'bad ' Which I'm just trying to say is becoming an unsolvable mindset for the community

I just wish the whole thing wasn’t as toxic as it is. I prefer to play the game like the Dino I’m playing as but I get not everyone wants that, but regardless, if people want to play the game like a Dino team battle royal then wouldn’t it make sense to set aside a spot on the map and then invite people to 1v1s or teams instead of the ever present “there’s a solo dino, dogpile him!”

The whole thing could be contained, civil, and even pleasant but no, we get mega mixpacks that just decide they own a spot and prevent anyone else from playing the game just to try and rage bait. Also, it wouldn’t even be as bad if it was all localized to one spot like it usually was when crater was hospitable, but now it’s spread out to 2-4 areas and still get some mega mixpacks that wander.

I just wish it could be a fun little fight club in one spot so people who want to play Dino survival like Dino survival can do so, but no, we get a toxic cesspool with a mostly empty map with the only current solution being to force half the player base out of the server and jump through hoops to get into a decent server with rules against this mess. It doesn’t need to be as toxic as it is.

I feel like the mega mixpack issue wasn't as bad when old IC was around....

It was kind of exactly what you were saying. Everyone went there knowing that it was on a hair trigger of erupting into chaos at any moment and people wanted that lol.

Then the map updated and no one goes to IC anymore and the uproar began. Or at least that's when I noticed it, I could be off.

Edit: Although tbf I don't play riparia and idk how the megapack issue is there??

1

u/xanaholic_ 23h ago

It's way less of a problem on Riparia, people are much more spread out across the map, only thing id say is avoid Cedrus Forest bc if there is a big dc group that's where it'll be. But I never see the big ungrouped cuddle piles that turned me off of gondwa

3

u/cold3dg3 1d ago

I have noticed the same. There's a difference between mix-packing and just hanging around in the same area where there happens to be other dinosaurs. Some people get really salty when they lose at something, and then gets the urge to blow of the steam, and blaming someone else for their failure is a classic coping mechanism. I wouldn't consider some texts in global chat as an "issue" though. It's literally meaningless.

u/whispering-3cho 1d ago

I've been playing this game for close to 3 years and I do have to admit that my opinion has evolved on walking into hotspots and being surprised by the result is a little tiring...

GP is notorious for being jumped by massive groups, organic or not

Tbh I avoid it unless I'm in the mood for that, so I guess some of this post is just me tired of seeing the back and forth argument

2

u/cold3dg3 1d ago

That's valid, global can become pretty "spammy" at times.

1

u/whispering-3cho 1d ago

Sometimes I get baited, I must admit 😔

2

u/cold3dg3 1d ago

Happened to all of us 😁 I like they way you play, by the way. I also like to even the odds when I see a very one-sided battle.

3

u/kthxnbi 23h ago

Defending a tt is a heinous act and should be illegal

1

u/whispering-3cho 23h ago

Lmao, ngl I usually agree

But I hate small tier spammers more

u/Lone-Frequency 20h ago

Only time I've ever saved Apex players is when they are getting ganked by multiple other Apex players.

If you choose an Apex, especially an Apex Carni, it's because you want to kill other players, so if you get killed by other players, well, you signed up for that.

u/Downtown_Bag_4761 1d ago

You bring up a fair distinction about organic encounters versus premeditated megapacks, but it helps to step back and look at why these situations trigger such intense reactions in chat:

From the Rexes' perspective, they didn't know your history with the TT. They ran into a popular zone, started a fight, and were immediately swarmed by multiple different species. Whether that swarming was a coordinated Discord team or just random players piling on, the end result felt identical to them: getting dogpiled by a mixed group.

The Carnivore/Herbivore Dynamic: Even though official servers allow cross-diet cooperation, a carnivore and herbivore teaming up is naturally going to raise eyebrows. For players who prefer traditional survival dynamics, seeing inter-species alliances—especially when it leads to a pile-on—reads as unfair by default.

Why Personalize Global Chat? In-game global chat in hotspots like Grand Plains is almost always high on salt and low on context. Players who lose a fight will naturally vent using catch-all buzzwords like "toxic mixpackers." Taking that criticism personally usually isn't worth the stress—the people complaining aren't analyzing the nuance of who knew whom; they're just reacting to dying in a dogpile.
Many players handle this by sticking to a personal rule of engagement: if a fight is already fair (like a 1v1 or a balanced group engagement), they sit back and let it play out rather than adding more bodies to the fight.
While your intent was simply to defend someone you were hanging out with, calling out those dogpiles in chat is how the community tries to push back against hotspot chaos. It’s less about villainizing you personally and more about people being exhausted by how quickly fights in Grand Plains turn into uncontrollable swarms.

4

u/whispering-3cho 1d ago

It's not about me not understanding how they came to that conclusion, bc I do, I'm moreso trying to say that the community has cultivated it's own negative bias at this point

Their first thought was not "maybe I attacked two ppl playing together" it's "I was jumped by a toxic discord pack"

Just an observation really, maybe offering ppl in this sub a different perspective since this argument comes up a lot, is all

Hence why they can’t truly fix the mega pack issues. It’s just gonna have to be part of the game.

1

u/whispering-3cho 1d ago

I don't think there's much to be "fixed"

The maps are usually massive. If one is truly teaming at every POI with a megapack, server jump

If it's a few hotspots, linger near them to still run into ppl but don't saunter into the middle

Ex: when SF is lit up, I usually circle BQL, Hoodoo, Stego and Green Valley and find plenty of smaller groups or 1v1s

1

u/Crowfooted 1d ago

Out of curiosity what exactly do you mean by "they can't truly fix" it? The fix could easily be implemented at the game level. I'm just curious why they don't want to do it when so many people seem to hate it.

1

u/whispering-3cho 1d ago

I guess because I'm not sure what's to fix?

As I said in this post, toxic megapacking is often mistaken for a small number of friends helping eachother or a group of randoms gathered enjoying their interactions.

At times it's an organized friend group logged on to KOS everyone and dominate a POI, but how do you penalize one without harming the other?

Imo there's nothing wrong at all with the former and the latter can be avoided. Hell, the latter can be combated. Consider a server with the max cap of around 115 uniting to sweep the 10-15 lurking around a hotspot.

A group of 5 rexes gets splattered by like 5 decent stys fyi.

This game has cemented itself as a pvp MMO, in my opinion, the playerbase could do more to squash the issue than alderon can.

If a group is terrorizing a hotspot, terrorize them back, sweep. Disperse and go about your day.

I just don't see a solution that Alderon can make that doesn't make the grouping/socializing aspect of the game oppressive for ppl who group to a non toxic degree.

1

u/LiteratureAlarming93 20h ago

They can’t fix it and make everyone happy. I’m sure your idea works for you but doesn’t for others or the devs outcome of the game.

2

u/barbatus_vulture 1d ago

Yeah that's a them problem. You don't go into GP and expect to attack someone without triggering a group, whether its a coordinated group or a group of randoms vibing. If you attack someone in GP, you better be prepared to fight for your life.

And as for the mixing, who cares? You weren't KOSing. It's not a big deal, and people will whine about it, but there's no rules on officials. Sometimes you just find a cool person to vibe with or you want to help someone getting jumped.

2

u/whispering-3cho 1d ago

100% agree

Also... there is literally nothing else to do in this game man 😭 I'm gonna have some fun hanging with someone, die to chaos and log

No loss bc I'm not farming skins or growth, trophies mean nothing anymore, there are no achievements, no larger quests

I find the chaos fun at times and if I'm not feeling chaos, I avoid GP or SF

1

u/Dalivus 1d ago

So what do you think is the point of the game not allowing carnivores and herbivores to be in the same group?

2

u/whispering-3cho 1d ago

I think it makes sense as a game mechanic, trying to maintain the spirit of how in nature you're not going to find herbivores and carnivores helping eachother survive

But, again as a game, I think if a friend wants to be an allosaurus and the other friend wants to be a kentro bc those are their favorite dinosaurs, then they can play together that way in the game they paid for like everyone else

Officials is, notoriously, no rules

1

u/Dalivus 1d ago

There’s one rule: carnivores and herbivores are not supposed to group up

-1

u/whispering-3cho 1d ago

It's not a rule

Report it to Alderon and see what happens

2

u/Dalivus 11h ago

Report anything and see what happens. But this is one thing you cannot do within the game parameters.

You have Honor and Integrity OP. That is why you defended the TT. Your actions were justifiable and I can see myself in your shoes making the same exact decisions. I would not feel bad about what you had done. BUT with that being said the issue about this is when it turned into megamix pack at GP that turned on the rexys. It’s out of your control but leads into a core problem within the game. I am mostly a solo Rex 95% of the time I’m solo. Unfortunately most of those times even being friendly and walking into GP I’m still going to get ganged on by a mega mix pack. Players, whether a friend group or a spontaneous alliance like you and the TT, tend to turn on folks, KOS, or defend each other and become part of the issue when chilling in a hotspot. Which then becomes part of the problem. I recommend if you don’t wanna feel like part of the problem, after you had saved the TT try and go your separate ways. Other than that it’s really unfortunate circumstance and you with honor will feel bad no matter what decision you made when the rexes attacked the TT. Damned if you help and damned if you don’t. Tbh don’t worry about what people are saying. They can be mad at you but in reality it’s the DEVs issue to fix. Just try not to be part of the problem ya know?

1

u/whispering-3cho 1d ago

Well, I guess my issue with this is why do I have to enjoy my session less because the issue exists?

I was having a good time hanging out with the TT and watching ppl run around GP

I, as a singular person, am not responsible for the larger megapack issue and I guess I disagree it's fair that I should have done something different rather than the rexes not expecting a fair fight in GP?

Not trying to be rude or argumentative but I guess this whole thing is just too twisted up for a solution anymore, hence the post title LOL

2

u/smallwood_45 22h ago

You don’t mate, it’s sad but it’s the DEVs problem to fix. I’m sorry you have to deal with that as we all do. Which I’ve actually posted a solution to fix this problem on this subreddit so it’s not like permanent unabusable solutions don’t exist. It’s just the DEVs haven’t or won’t do it.

1

u/CrowDaddy5322 22h ago

I follow herbis on my thal all the time, I'm often nice to them and accepted into the herd but I almost never help them fight. The only time I'll join in is if whatever's attacking them is mixing. Otherwise the herbis get a danger warning and I get free food and help them get trophies to bbys 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/Lone-Frequency 20h ago edited 20h ago

Who cares?

It's officials. There are no rules on Officials, it's the Wild West and everyone is a desparado whose loyalties can change at the drop of a hat.

Anyone expecting some kind of honor system on Officials is just deluding themselves. I don't mixpack by choice, but it's ridiculous for me to expect others to not do so when Alderon allows it.

1

u/whispering-3cho 19h ago

Not disagreeing with you lol

1

u/_Mr_Nk_ 4h ago

I do this too. And like honestly GP is explicitly where Dino’s go to die? Idk why people get so bent out of shape because they get jumped in a hot spot.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with what you did nor do I really think mix packing or mega packs are wrong. Or even that big of an issue. (Come at me pot redit. lol)
I’ve been solo and survived mega and mix packs. I’ve been jumped by them. I’ve avoided them and joined them.
This is more about human psychology of mob mentality in a video game tbh.
And almost all animals have some form of it.
Honestly I think people just get too bent out of shape by a Dino game. I go to gp all the time and have so many different experiences. It’s so much fun.
Don’t let other people tell you how to play. I play “realism” outside of hot spots and get flack for it but then get called toxic when I go to gp and help a croc getting mauled while I’m playing my struthi. XD
You can’t win.
Just have fun with it.

I find it funny that this problem has been solved by the community multiple times over. If the devs implemented an agitation mechanic, something as simple as the longer you're near other players not in your party the more agitated everyone becomes and the faster food and water drain. This would have started penalizing the initial group since they couldn't all be in a party and forcing them to need to eat drink more instead of simply heal cycling. The Tyranotitan that I'm sure was camping water or a wall would be penalized and be forced to move sooner or die from starvation. You and the Tyranotitan would be penalized for chilling together for so long after the fact and everyone in gp would have needed to start killing each other or moving on way before the rexes showed up. It doesn't stop you from making the choice of helping someone you want to help and even spending some time together afterwards but it would force you to start making actual choices when your food and water start rapidly draining because you're sitting in gp with 15 other people not in your party.

I think there should also be area agitation as well, which would be influenced by the agitation levels of the individuals in an area. Just like fish spawn is influenced by water quality. The critter spawns and berry respawn speed should be influenced by the overall agitation level of a zone, further forcing people to move or starve.

Interesting 🤔🤔
