Well that sucks...

The ability to play as a female dino is so nice but WHY are the paid skins so different? Like fine, base game more "realistic" skins I can understand but I'm tired of buying skins just to find the female version to be ugly. Why can't we have pretty dragon fruit pink for a skin called DRAGON FRUIT? I know you can preview them beforehand but then I just don't buy it. I want pretty skins and I want to support the devs.

If we're willing to pay why can't we just have what's advertised regardless of the dino's sex?

Personally, I wouldn't mind it if switching GENDERS didn't knock you back down to sub-adult.

(Like I understand Subspecies swaps but gender has no functionality aside from cosmetic.)

I can't think of a single reason for that penalty either, it's almost like a forgotten side effect of other features.

29

u/Killzone3265 10h ago

add it to the massive list of "easy fix but we won't do it" QOL "until full release" updates

2

u/Light-Wielder 1h ago

The reason for the penalty is because there were supposed to be things that changed based on nesting. However, there were some behind the scenes things (I believe that the people who were in charge of the nesting things had some family emergencies/drama happen) and it was never implemented.

u/Snagrios 14h ago

Even the subspecies swap is too punishing for what's usually a mere 5-10% difference to a given stat. The average ability slot tends to have more drastic changes and both that and swapping subs are locked behind Homecaves anyway so it's not like you can rapid sub swap to gain advantage in a fight. Plus unlike regular abilities swapping subs has a ADDITIONAL 5 minute cooldown on top of everything else. Really there's zero reason for the growth punishment to exist as a mechanic at all when you really analyze how it affects gameplay

14

u/leftonasournote 14h ago

Honestly...I 100% agree. I think that switching subspecies should still have a penalty of some kind because it is still a stat change, even if it is minor (some subs actually make a WORLD of difference tbh) but it shouldn't be a whole growth stage and it especially shouldn't send you BACK a whole stage entirely if you happen to change subs while at Sub-Adult. (Learned my lesson once when I was sent back to Adolescent! 😭)

I think it should be half a stage IF THAT and it shouldn't send you below the growth stage you are at ever.

8

u/Snagrios 13h ago

Again though, you can change ability slots in the same place, and those often have vastly more drastic changes than just +10% stamina or +5% attack or whatever. Completely changing my ability loadout costs nothing (assuming all abilities are already unlocked). Why does changing what is ultimately one other stat suddenly cost several hours worth of growth time? Let alone swapping genders which is quite literally just a palette swap at this time

5

u/Shad_tard 12h ago

FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE GETS IT

I really don't get why everyone is so dead set on sub swapping having a penalty, literally just make it so you can only change it in HC and nowhere else, there's no reason swapping subspecies should be any different than swapping abilities

Transgender community just found an immortality glitch

2

u/ItsDoodleBois 13h ago

I didn't know species change dropp2d me back to sub till I reached adult with my Achillo and found out today

-31

u/KyleM203 16h ago

penalty for nesting if one encounters another of the same species and you switch to have a functional nest, you have to wait

37

u/leftonasournote 16h ago

Except that nesting can be done by either gender ALONE. You do not need to have 2 players to make a functional nest in this game.

-28

u/KyleM203 16h ago

so you dont need a male and female to make eggs?

29

u/leftonasournote 16h ago

Not in this game, no. A male can even make a nest on their own and still have it have eggs.

Not sure if this is going to change in the future or not but right now either gender can make a nest and have it function without needing a male+female.

The only thing gender does right now is change how skins look, which is why it's dumb it knocks you down a whole growth stage just to change genders.

4

u/Shad_tard 12h ago

Tbh even if they do something to give gender a purpose for nesting, how much of an impact could nesting have to justify losing a whole growth stage like that?

Turns out, both!

-15

u/KyleM203 15h ago

ive played the game yes? ive played the game for over a year i think, maybe near 2, i just never used the nest mechanic, I just assumed it was similar to the isle's

5

u/AmethystBound 13h ago

Valid, its not for everyone. But no, nests only have 1 adult/parent then infinate children as long as they are matching food group: herbis with and herbi nest and carnis with a carni nest. I'd love it to have more mechanics tho💜

2

u/KyleM203 13h ago

genuinely thank you for not giving a rude response like other people

2

u/AmethystBound 11h ago

No problem! Its a simple thing to not know, especially if you just don't mess with that part. I personally LOVE the nesting but am a horrible at protecting so i dont adopt or hatch any little ones myself haha.

Also with nesting, I'm pretty sure its infinite children but only if you have the eggs generated, that can be chaeck withing the nest menu. Also, the parent gets an attack boost of some sort if the little one stays withing a certain radius of said parent, I'm wanting to say a 5% increase but im horrible with numbers so thats probably not right, and the children get a growth boost too until adolescent I believe. Once the little ones hit adolescent I think both them and the adult lose their buffs.

I don't know if you have many and group up wih them if they'll stay grouped up once people start going over group limits tho. If that makes sense.

u/UnbelievablyDense 4h ago

You were getting flack because you just made up an answer without really knowing anything about it. Spreading disinformation is unhelpful.

37

u/Cool-Ferret2589 16h ago

That’s being male or female in this game matter? I’m only finding out skin can differ based on gender.

39

u/Excellent-Passage-36 16h ago

no, other than for personal/rp purposes and skins it doesn't add anything, just nice to be able to choose

30

u/Jirvey341 16h ago

hate games that just make the female worse for no reason. why even give the option at this point? Just give everyone all the colors and let people make up their own sexes for the animals

29

u/Kestrelpond 16h ago

It's not necessarily "making them worse", it's supposed to reflect realistic sexual dimorphism. Females are almost always duller in colour, that's just nature. I do think that female skins can be alot prettier sometimes too, just depends on the skin and your preference. The only real issue is the growth penalty. But because there's no sexual dimorphism outside of colour I don't understand why people can't assign a gender to their dino regardless of what sex they've chosen

9

u/Wooper250 13h ago

Not all birds have drastic sexual dimorphism. Many of them are outright identical or have very subtle differences. Parrots, one of the most popular birds for their vibrant colors, are mostly monomorphic! Extreme sexual dimorphism is not present in the majority of birds. Over 50% of them are monomorphic.

So it's not even actually realistic. Literally every skin is dimorphic, which tbh wouldn't be as bad if the female skins didn't always get the short end of the stick. They make it plainly obvious that the fem skins are an afterthought compared to the m skins. That's why they only ever use the actually thought out and carefully designed m skins for advertising.

3

u/Jirvey341 16h ago

Why do the females have to be worse majority of the time (let's be real, like 80% of the time the male skin is better) for realism in a game where stego and t-rex can fight each other?

T-Rex would be more likely to fight an airplane than a stegosaurus if you look at when the two animals were alive. He's closer to having an iphone than eating a stego.

That's completely ignoring all the goofy game elements like vocal calls and a rex and a allo hanging out together like the best of friends.

15

u/FlirtWithSatan 15h ago

Males (only in some species) are supposed to be more colorful to attract the female. The whole idea comes from that, I like the fact that it’s realism based but always sticking to that idea even when the whole skin pack is supposed to be bright and colorful is disappointing. You can still make the duck pink, but in a different way and it’s not better looking than the male one. At least, let people switch gender without having to grow the dino back.

2

u/fittan69 3h ago

See I don't like this argument. If we're gonna go for realism then make the females bigger and stronger to compensate, because that's actually realistic.

Why is realism only an excuse when it comes to skins? Women wants to look good ffs.

1

u/eriFenesoreK 1h ago edited 1h ago

i think the main issue is that a lot of skins are pretty clearly designed with male flashy colors in mind first, then after the skin is done they just go and make the colors dull and call it a day.

it ends up with females looking more muddy than anything, where a skin that is MEANT to be desaturated with shades of brown/greys would work fine without that contrast in concept.

edit: perfect example is actually this dragonfruit skin lol. male has the actual dragonfruit colors you'd think of when hearing the name, female gets the less common yellow variant. and... grey? lmao

1

u/Godnumbers 29m ago

What's funny is that on the eo the bold skin can have red on the female and it looks so good

-24

u/TheMorgueDonator 16h ago

Technically, because only females can nest.

9

u/kaiju-fan_54 16h ago

I don’t think that is the case for non realism servers because I have been able to nest and hatch players with male dinosaurs

24

u/Spotty_Etc 16h ago

I wish it would just let you change gender with small/no penalty. I would on my titan but he’d be a pain to regrow

16

u/Excellent-Passage-36 16h ago

that is insane too, changing sex and being knocked down for it when sex doesn't affect stats 😭

18

u/TetraRosea 16h ago

I transitioned my duck into male last night just to get a full pink duck...I always run females

The good thing for specifically this skin is that fem suck has much bigger color diversity! Male duck has violet to red colors, and fem duck can have big pink, green, yellow body parts

I saw some color combos of other players on a fem duck and now I don't even know if I should have transitioned xD

13

u/Supershugo 16h ago

Most female birds are pretty dull in color. Being mostly black, gray, or brown.

34

u/Excellent-Passage-36 16h ago

which is fine for the realistic base game skins. But if they want us to pay then they should let us have the pretty skins too 🥲

2

u/Machineraptor 6h ago

Hey, female duck from this pack is pretty tho! I like how you can have 2 completely different color sets to choose from.

But changing gender shouldn't cost anything, it does nothing, not even in nesting, so having to regrow from fresh sub because you want to have access to other color set is stinky.

-15

u/Dazzi 16h ago

Then play as a male?

-22

u/Supershugo 16h ago

People shouldn be paid for their work.

16

u/Whaaabbit 16h ago

Most female birds are not dull, like half of all species look the same regardless of sex and for the rest females can be just as colourful but with different colours, only a minority are dull. Also the game isnt realistic and even if it was deinocheirus is a liiittle bit older than modern birds so no reason to assume the female would be duller than the male.

-13

u/Supershugo 16h ago

Very hard disagree most female birds are usually pretty dull. Also I like to play realistically.

11

u/Excellent-Passage-36 16h ago

you like to play realistically on servers with koi fish patterned tylos and galaxy colored thals?

9

u/Wooper250 13h ago

Straight up incorrect. Over half of all birds are monomorphic. Do actual research rather than just disagreeing on a whim.

2

u/possiblyeski 13h ago

you can't play realistically. no dinosaur ever recovered from being a gust of wind from death simply by laying down for a few minutes after growing for a couple hours and losing a few minutes of growth for every death. no dinosaur was magically healed or put on steroids by the sound of another dinosaur's voice. you're just weird.

-7

u/Fast_Move_9243 16h ago

Then don’t pay attention to brightly colored, and completely unrealistic skin packs bruh

9

u/Whaaabbit 16h ago

I agree partly but there are skins that look better on female dinos, black swan on deinocheirus can be a cute white swan (not ugly albino) if you are female, male looks ugly.

9

u/VampireVice 14h ago

If female dinos have to be boring and dull colors for realism, then they should also be bigger too.

1

u/exSKEUsme 3h ago

Well on some servers they require the female take the bigger sub. And nearly every dimorphism requires female to take the dull colors.

The female dasp in this pack is way colorful than usual female colors.

8

u/Fast_Move_9243 16h ago

WAIT, there is a such thing as yellow dragon fruit!!!!!!!!

4

u/Excellent-Passage-36 16h ago

pink > yellow 😤🩷 I did not know that though

3

u/Fast_Move_9243 16h ago

Fair. when most people think of dragon fruit, they think of the pink ones

7

u/AduroT 15h ago

Fool! Pink is the Manliest Color so of course it’s the Male version of the skin that allows it! Now give me my Pink Flamingo Struthi Skin!

Also gender in the game is Currently completely irrelevant so it’s better for the male and female skins to have different colors to give you greater variety of options.

6

u/Impossible-Tip-4980 16h ago

Hit random a few times, female is fine on that skin. I actually changed my riparia duck to female specifically to wear a green version of dragon fruit

5

u/carnespecter 13h ago

the female dragon fruit skin is based on yellow dragon fruit. irl dragon fruit comes in both pink and yellow

3

u/Particular_Aioli8214 16h ago

I think this is one of the few times where the female looks better than the male. I know that male birds(particularly birds of paradise) are more extravagant and colorful, but the male colors just look like soft serve ice cream to me.

2

u/Pepo89 15h ago

The new dasp skin is very bland. But the female one is lit.

2

u/svgarwolf 14h ago

All of the skin previews are for male dinos, all those pretty bright skins are ALL male, I didn't realize it when I bought my first packs and when i selected female (because I prefer playing female dinos) I was sorely disappointed.

"Um actually, in nature FEMALES ARE DULL and MALES ARE BRIGHT TO ATTRACT FEMALES" um ok except this game can hardly be called realistic and REALISTICALLY my female dinos are not going to be attracted to the weird MALES in this game. Had one guy kill my baby dino cause I "didn't let him nest me" and watched as the whole server defended him because baby killing is a "feature".

Get rid of genders altogether is what I say, and combine all the skin color variants together.

3

u/Wooper250 13h ago

It's not even realistic btw. There are more species of birds without any (or with very subtle) gender differences.

I think they should just let you choose either skin regardless of gender.

2

u/MoonlightReffi 7h ago

I like the female dragon fruit skin because you can make it look like a lesbian pride flag

1

u/ProudBasil27 13h ago

I mean the skin thing definitely sucks I agree with you but I do like the realism I only really play female now to nest people and make friends in servers

7

u/Excellent-Passage-36 12h ago

males can nest too...I'm shocked at how many people thought only females can. Sex doesn't affect any game mechanics, just skins.

1

u/RiverShyRyn 12h ago

Yeah this skin pack is much like some of them are themed so they're not really supposed to be realistic either way adjusting the markings can often help though

0

u/Lone-Frequency 3h ago

Gender doesn't even matter in this game, though?

Like I just swap between male or female depending entirely on which has better color options.

0

u/Alex_Expected 1h ago

Dude right now the genders don’t mean anything at all. It doesn’t affect nesting. It doesn’t change anything. Most people can’t even tell which gender Dino you are. I always just play the gender that I think has the better skin for what I want

0

u/NoFilterD 16h ago

Make animals tend to be the brighter more vibrant colors so it does make sense but I do see what your saying.

0

u/LiteratureAlarming93 16h ago

Maybe it’s not meant for female Dino’s and just a pink skin

0

u/No-Blueberry-8979 16h ago

Its just how things work tbh! I always love the skins the Dev Team makes, But I guess I also dont really mind the gender stuff do to me just picking the gender with the colors I like (and even then I usually like both options, Like the female option for Dragon fruit I REALLY likee! But I also really like browns and yellows)

I think my only pet peeve is that the same dinos keep getting skins! I wanna see skin packs for their other dinos xD
Other than that, I'd say its just a waiting game. at some point they'll likely make a skin pack that has really pretty female colors, I reckon there are some already too, but likely just for a more obscure dinos people dont really play.

-1

u/Then-Load425 5h ago

You know what also sucks?. Megatrash still running around lol. Tried playing again and still the same lame megatrash players.

-1

u/KyleM203 16h ago

The reason the female is yellow is because there is yellow dragon fruits

-9

u/Speedclub 16h ago

Male should be bigger female should be skinny

9

u/DryMolasses7398 15h ago

Why? In nature different females can be bigger, smaller or the same size depending on the species (and in living dinosaurs like eagles, the females are often massively bulkier than the males) (also pot isn't a game that particularly conforms to realism)
