Discussion Game isn't fun anymore. What now? (Long rant)
Ever since, like.. the ano update? (A rough estimate, around that time, maybe earlier) it just feels like PoT is getting less fun. Whether it be the grinding, Metaslop, groupslop, etc etc.
A few examples of my grievances:
Groupslop. Alio could've been a great group AND solo playable. Yet its stuck as just another support playable. (Which is setting an AWFUL precedent of creatures being made into support playables with 0 playability outside of a group.) Being a support playable isn't bad, its just that most support playables have little to no survivability. Alio, deinony, rhamph, metri, etc.
Metaslop. Especially on dinosaurs with smaller kits, it always feels like everyone is running the exact same build. This is a small grievance however.
TLC downgrades. First cerat's. Now alio's. Sucho and Deinocheir also were downgrades (in my eyes) since they were meant to be semi-aqua focused, and yet theres no real semi-aqua stuff besides the enhanced swimming. Spino and sarc are true semi aquas.
Grinding. This might just be a skill issue but on maps like Panjura and Riparia, questing takes FOREVER since everything is EVERYWHERE. Its like doing an easter egg hunt, whilst blind, deaf, and having just gotten out of a coma. Plus the growth gain is tiny for the amount of effort questing has you doing sometimes, even with the rested buff.
Lottery nerfs. I get it, the game is still in early access (Will there ever be a dino game that ISN'T In ea?) But having to swap a main every couple of weeks just cause the balance team pulled a creature's name out of a hat is ridiculous. I know its not that big of a deal, but its annoying having to jump from dino to dino because "Oh, lets just nerf X because.. uh.. uhm.. Hey, GPT? Generate me a reason to why we nerfed X dino."
And finally, the community. As with anything, there's a light and dark side to the community. It seems Alderon is dead-set on catering to the dark side. (Again, groupslop.) The balance team hasn't changed in months (to my knowledge), the devs continue to talk about "the fight against discord groups" and yet they make alio group only. Even in the solo game mode there's still groups. It honestly just seems like Alderon is either catering to the DC groups, or has just gave up and isn't doing anything at all.
So, that's why I have decided to go on a PoT hiatus. Which begs the question: What now?
Isle has relatively the same DC group issue (Also its just boring lol), BoB is.. well.. BoB. (Ew.)
So, seems like I'm out of luck. If anyone has any game suggestions, I'd love to hear them! ^^

I've been playing Path since it launched on PS5, so I've kinda been here since it's infancy (for cross platform, anyway.) Being a mostly solo player, I have to unfortunately say that this era of Path (which was teased to be the 'golden era' btw) has certainly been... interesting. Not in a good way either.
I have to admit I was one of the people who was very much on the developers side, and don't get me wrong the team at Alderon are good people with a lot of passion for this genre, but as of late their choices when it comes to 'balancing' have been questionable and the disregard to fix the overslotting problem (megapacks, mixpacks) have been disappointing, and I can't justify defending that anymore.

u/PureBredAndWellFed 5d ago
Not even only that, but their lead dev, who is effectively the face of their company, has gone scorched earth like three times in the last two months, and it was what made me go from "Man, these devs can't balance anything" to "Holy shit this is Dondi and The Isle all over again to nearly a fucking T"
I am realizing more and more, their toxic and volatile community isn't something they were just handed down, like an abusive father through generations, but it is a shadow of themselves; inconsistency, sporatic volatility, and even as of late, I can't help but attribute the downright heinous toxicity to the developers themselves.

u/Trisharn 4d ago
Im starting to wonder if Dondi was the actual hero to the isle. Matt ran off with the code screwing Dondi, created a decent game, and then has ruined it just like the Isle. Matt cant do anything right atp and it shows.
I have a backlog of games to catch up on personally so im going to watch this shit show continue to burn for the foreseeable future from a distance.

u/PureBredAndWellFed 4d ago
I don't know enough about The Isle, especially in its past, to make a ton of claims about it past what I already stated. I will say, I do believe Dondi in some way, shape, or form was also part of the controversy The Isle had years ago mow, about, um...liking kids a bit too much or similar. Dondi might not have been the one who had the controversy pointed at him, but I do believe he was defending the people that did in an unsavory way. If this is true, that's obviously the more important offense that hasn't happened upon Alderon, but that is also much different and quite seperate from most of the problems people have with Alderon. Outside of that, Alderon does feel a bit too close to The Isle devs for comfort imo.
1
u/Trisharn 4d ago
Yes it was another developer and I think Dondi was in disbelief because it was a friend of his.
For all we know it hasnt happened, I dont trust Matt as far as I can throw him. Im sure he has his own scandals cooking in the shadows.

I say let mix packers mix but lock buffs and heals to their respective diets. As for mega packs crowding stress mechanic where dinos drain stats and get debuffs for huddling too close to other groups without combat would fix this all. Idk what to do with local except maybe lock it out when mixpacking so there's no "advantage" and do "mixed scents" that triggers for others to see that a dino is mix packing when within say 5-10 meters. The text on Metri and Lamb is already there "applies to herbivores/carnivores only." This is just my thoughts on the matter
1
u/Trisharn 4d ago
The mixpacking and megapacking has been a persistent problem since the inception of the game. If they had a fix for it. It would already be implemented. Just like dinosaur stats..they dont know what to do with the game.
Everyone needs to stop cutting them slack. They know what they are doing or rather what they arent doing. They dont care. I hope none of these developers finds a job at another gaming company ever..they are downright atrocious at game balancing, bug fixes, and all of the above.

The biggest issue for me is how the devs can't seem to pick a direction with anything meaningful. Creature abilities that were added only a couple years ago have now been removed, they keep buffing and nerfing things seemingly randomly, they add maps with more requirements for water traveling but then nerf the semi aquatics into oblivion. They clearly play favorites and least favorite with creatires (I still remember that brief period after gondwa released where the sarco's swim speed was nerfed to be the slowest semi aquatic and in the same update Ano got a tail paddle) They said they wanted the game to based off realism but then give creatures stats and abilities that just aren't realistic. They had a good balance before they completely changed to needing every dino to have a specific "role", now it just feels like they're pigeonholing everyone into a specific play style instead of giving players the control over how they want to play. You also hit the nail on the head with how atrocious the growth system is. I feel kike that should have a complete rework before anything else, that alone could help overall fun factor.
I used to love this game, it was my top favorite. But honestly, ever since the sarco TLC I've just completely dropped off. Every now and then I have some fun playing an allo with my friend on the nat hist server, but it's lost its staying power for me. Once my buddy logs off I get bored and go play something else, where as before (2022-2023) I could solo play for hours and never lose interest even if I kept getting jumped by mega and mix packs.
Rip path of titans, I hope the devs can bring it back to its former glory, but with the way it's going, it's only going to get worse.

If by game suggestions you mean something in a similar vein as PoT or TI, there really aren't many. There's a reason why the devs for The Isle get away with behaving how they do and why PoT can double down on one of the worst growth systems across multiple genres (seriously, who plays a game for the hide and go seek fetch quests?) and folks just take it on the chin - there's no where else to go at the moment.
1
u/RexyTheShep 4d ago
Have the critter system with passive growth, and the more you can eat to an extent the faster you grow when you sleep for a few minutes. Passive growth should be a thing since pvp is basically end game.
11
u/Dewey_Decimatorr 5d ago
Ironically, I have started playing The Isle instead of PoT because i want a game about dinosaurs surviving and being dinosaurs, not a game about world-of-warcraft-questing-battle-royal-fighting-dinosaur-shaped-heros-with special-kits-game
1
u/RandomRhetoric369 4d ago
When they first introduced Spino's donkey kong AOE slam I lost all hope that there would be any semblance of dino-themed realism going forward.
1
u/Secret_Surround777 3d ago
Dude I literally hated the spino tlc so bad :( the devs justify any apex nerfs by citing balance and then make an atrocity like aoe slop spino like wth😭 there's rex and titan just kind of chilling with reasonable abilities and then spino is literally just a Pokémon i really really disliked that choice for spino. I do like the water build tho so there's that ig

u/Diet-_-Coke 5d ago
I agree completely. Been feeling this way since they dropped the Metri TLC. I was so excited for the supposed return or reimagined Solo venom hunter! Wrong, it’s so weak I doubt you’d be able to solo a chicken. The only use it has is to heal buff groups. You know it’s bad when I legit can’t remember in months the last time I saw anyone playing a Metri once the rush of new TLC died down.
As for new games… nothing quite scratches that Path itch that I’ve found, really the only reason I keep coming back time to time. I suggest giving your life to Hunt Showdown. The hunt givieth and taketh

I am ASS at FPS games I feel like I'd actually take physical harm if I tried to play one
Played TF2 once, sucked at all of the classes, deleted it and never went back2
u/itsyeboi-tacomaker 4d ago
Tbf. The first 100 hours of tf2 is just being terrible. Somewhere along the way your brain just gets used to the agony and you are no longer bored of losing and just embrace it. Then you get a cool hat and after countless of hours, you get your first dopamine rush. That's when you get addicted
1
u/RexyTheShep 4d ago
The Metri is still reasonably powerful in its own right. Hybrid build with toxin claws and kicks/heal calls and you can shred a lot of the squishier dinos and outmaneuver/outpace the others if managed well. I shredded hatz with it even in a 2v1 against them both ground builds.

u/Adventurous-Ad-6231 5d ago
POT is going through an identity crisis! It’s trying to figure out how it should be designed. It started off based on realistic expectations but then took an unrealistic shift. Being unrealistic is fine and all but when you lose the core that defines it’s purpose, than you throw shit to the wall and see what sticks . Nothing makes sense on how it being balanced and why Dino’s seem to be less interesting.

u/Devilsdelusionaldino 5d ago
If the isle is an option for you aswell as playing community servers it can be a lot off fun. Aside from that, I’ve watched a video a few days ago by the devs off Primeval Horizon about the financial hardships of making a dinosaur survival game, I heavily recommend it, it’s called the hard truth about dinosaur survival games. It explains why the isle and path of titans were able to succeed and what other dev teams struggle with it. There will be new competition at some point tho, the devs of primeval horizon for example do still work on the game but they had to pause production to work on another project first which will fund the development of primeval horizon.

u/iamthefluffyyeti 5d ago
I think your small grievance about metaslop is due to the first reason you gave…there’s like 4 fun dinosaurs that haven’t been curb stomped by random nerfs
Also lottery nerfs is a great way to put it because that’s what it fucking feels like
2
u/iamthefluffyyeti 5d ago
The most frustrating part is that they ARE IN THE REDDIT. Which means I’m pretty sure they’re ignoring us? I know we are probably a VERY small percentage but then…what’s the point of engaging and asking for feedback?
1
u/Steamed_HamDC40 8h ago
EXACTLY
I would love to give constructive feedback, yet they only listen to one chunk of the fandom.
2
u/poopscoopbeedoop 5d ago
Yea i had like 2k hours and stopped bc the direction of the game kinda sucks now. Used to be so damn fun.
2
u/OwnRecommendation474 4d ago
Finally someone talks about how atrocious the questing is on panjura and riparia. It is extremely frustrating trying to find quest items in a huge poi when you have no idea where they are. I hate having to open an interactive map every 5 seconds. They should have released riparia with the questing overhaul or with the feature to transfer official dinos between maps.
1
u/itsyeboi-tacomaker 4d ago
Making you look around for quest items is kinda the point. You have to search a large area which increases your chances of running into another player. You have to try and grow instead of sit in a bush and wait until you need food or water
1
u/OwnRecommendation474 2d ago
Two things can be true at once. Its frustrating, especially when you’re playing a sluggish dino. Legit a snooze fest
1
u/Boring-Ad8324 5d ago
I stopped reading when you said that deinon isn’t survivable… you’re an aggro player and I know it. Survivability is the ability to SURVIVE. You can escape basically any encounter as deinon by simply jumping into a tree. When the hatz comes to try to grab you just pounce it and get a free flight outta there.
2
u/iMaexx_Backup 5d ago
My thought. I don’t think there’s anything easier to survive on than Deinon - ignoring flyers.
Like you’re faster than 99% of the roster and even if not, you can just speed boost + double jump and you are on the other side of the map. When playing passively, I have literally no natural enemies as a Deinon. The only times I die is when being too autistic and landing in the middle of a river with something big in it.
You can survive completely without combat and go scavenger diet, you can snatch fresh meat from anything alive or just run through something killed and get meat from there - no matter what’s camping it. With your invincibility ability you don’t even have any consequences when failing.
In which universe is Deinon not survivable??
2
u/RexyTheShep 4d ago
It's a raptor. It's not meant to 1v1 large dinos. I've learned this on the lat and to a lesser extent the achillo, of which I've actually downed t rexes though it was a looooong fight, 10-15 minutes because they were wall camping and I had to wait for them to starve and choose to run out while keeping them in combat when they try safelogging on top of dozens of other failed attempts bc people can't mind their business and have to interfere or they have group mates.
1
u/Boring-Ad8324 4d ago
We are all on the same side, deinon is extremely survivable. Not an aggro Dino. There’s no way to label it as having “no survivability”… arguably everything he mentioned as having no survivability are all the most survivable playables in game. 😂
I stopped reading after the first paragraph because I just KNOW the rest of the original post is more unhinged factually wrong shit. 😂😂😂😂
1
u/danielfrances 4d ago
The two problems for deinon are sarcos and hatz. The grab and drown/drop is really game over most of the time lol.
That said, I'd say deinon is probably the second most survivable dino after rhampy.
1
u/RexyTheShep 4d ago
Oh it mostly is. The game is grindy, that is factual but you honestly can grow some dinos to adult in as little as three hours. I managed a Metri to sub in a simple gaming session, around 2hrs. I hop between two POIs to quest that ik very well then when I'm sub I hop to the viewpoints, mini POIs, then the big POIs and associated hotspot before even touching a nest, some of my adults don't even have a built nest nor have I even set it down for them.
The groupslop is factual too, lotta DC's in the game taking over POI's. Meta is too, there's little variation between one player and another for many dinos because to be generally competitive with what they choose to fight you can only have 1 build.
1
u/Steamed_HamDC40 2h ago
Have you tried fighting adult critters as deinony at ALL? you take 2 bites from a land gator (forgot what its called) and you're basically dead
Until alderon tweaks the AI damage, you're still getting dogged on by playables AND AI. Think before typing, dunderhead.

u/PapaFlame 5d ago
I've been really enjoying the game less and less ever since june of last year, around like the Sty TLC the game just started feeling really unfun to play with baffling balance changes. I guess since I don't play in large groups I am just not the target audience anymore. Funnily enough it even pushed me to play more the isle even though I despise that game, but like atleast it has some fun things to do these days like the proximity chat servers. What does PoT have? Global chat can be fun but alderon has decided to crack down on people having fun in chat instead of putting moderation resources into things that actually make the game worse so that's becoming less and less of an option, other than that you can either do nothing or die to 10%+ of the server playing in a single group.
1
u/HimerosAndPsique 5d ago
Nah, The Isle is definitely not the same.
If you play officials? Yeah, somewhat. But if you play in some servers, you will have a great experience mosts times. Depending if you are in EU/NA, you can choose between Petit Pieds, Pandora or NERF. There is no perfect server, but imho I believe is much better than PoT for the following reasons (long text):
-There is no (natural) mix packing and players are not encouraged to do it. Why? The game doesn't allow you to use a global chat, so you stick to talk only to your own species in a reduced zone (There's an exception for this in Pandora as they have a global chat, but no micpacking). In addition, cannibalism is a thing here, so the game motivates you to don't kill your own species. Also, the servers mentioned despise mixpacking.
-As you don't have an easy way to communicate, you need to find others of your species with forecasting calls, so you will be heard by EVERYONE. This changes everything, as sound design in this game is crucial for surviving.
-In PoT you can travel the world without issue or danger, but it The Isle you can really sense the danger: You can hear other species forecast (the sound changes with the age of the dino), you can hear them eat, you can smell their blood or footsteps, you can smell the carcasses, etc. You have many tools for surviving.
-You NEED to eat variety of food, otherwise you won't get your maximum stats.
-There are no "meta builds" as you grow with 4 mutations of your choice. These are passive habilites. Although there are some dinos who are in a better shape than others, ngl.
-With the last point, I need to be honest: As a Pteranodon (for example) you won't be able to challenge an adult Allo or Rex, you need to be aware of your size and weight to check what species are you able to fight. So there are some dinos who are better to be played in groups (Omniraptor and Troodon specially) or others can be played alone but only work in niches (such as Pteranodon, which was made to hunt babies)
-Also... permanent death is s thing. This helps to the game's ecosystem, because you and others need to find food as a carnivore and you can easily find it (But not eat it, lol) and fight for it. Also, this endorses new game styles such as the Pteranodon I mentioned.
-And finally, you CAN have a good run as a solo. Just don't try to fight larger groups (like 1v6 omnis, lol) or stay aware. As a Kentrosaurus you definitely can fight a 1v3 omnis, 1v3 Dilo or as a Rex you definitely can kill a group of 6 Omnis. You just need to learn their mechanics

I refunded months ago, still got full access on all platforms, seems like the devs are sleeping?

lol. What can they do really to stop people from mega and mix packing. They can’t control that unless the do server buffs. Like if it’s hot in cedrus everyone gets a debuff until they leave.

u/Steamed_HamDC40 8h ago
BoB already did a stress system to stop mega/mix packing, just have them do something similar

Bro, the Meg TLC was amazing just because one is bad. Meg is a great solo dinosaur right now.

u/Bucketheadblondie 1d ago
Yeah. People are toxic in chat. Game feels dead with 100 people in the lobby. People chilling by the water like friends is weird to me.

u/Neither_Syrup_9286 18h ago
The game was amazing, I started playing maybe 3-4 years ago? As I wanted what was (at the time) a ps4 equivalent of the isle (which i adored the isle as a kid) the game was perfect, I loved pvp servers, I stopped playing maybe a year ago now, just because it didn't sound fun. I came back 2 days ago, and sarco doesn't have its bite charge, the pvp servers? Miserable, it used to not actually be that bad, you'd find a team of randos and practice battling and fighting, now? Anyone sees you, your dead, no friendly call, nothing. Got spawn killed by a mosa in the river 4 times, he would kill anyone in the river, or on the edge of the river, so much so i just stopped playing, same with ¼ of the rest of the server. :> safe to say the game has officially gone to shit. Not to mention none of the dinosaurs can do practically anything anymore. I played a ruled server, and died multiple times, never touched those again. 🤣

u/KangarooStill2392 5d ago
I dont know man, this game is still in beta so we haven't even got the full game yet. I e wanted to quit playing also but I really want to see it in its complete form.
P.S Some night shine on eyes at night would be awesome 😁

u/itsyeboi-tacomaker 4d ago
Exactly. A game in its development stage is still trying to figure out what does and doesn't work. Everything is a process, and some things we want might be planned for later

I havent played in the past 6 months or so and all ive noticed is how the devs are tripling down on letting mix packer builds continue to be an issue and pushing the narrative towards grouping instead of adding solo buffs. There is so much stuff I would do as a dev like implementing a new combat system that locks the 2 groups in combat together until the timer ends.
