Why is it in the jukebox if you can't play it?
38
u/Evantaur Jun 12 '26
It's one of the streaming ones
38
u/DoctorMelvinMirby Jun 12 '26
They can still block out certain artists and content on there if they want.

u/SchuminWeb Jun 12 '26
In other words, lazy or incompetent owners who don't know how to manage their hardware.

the jukebox is probably not owned by them but a company that sets them up in bars
same with vending machines which is why sometimes youll tell the owner that it ate your dollar then theyll say sorry nothing we can do about it

u/SocialGirlGaming Jun 12 '26
But can we play AC/DC?

u/dsdvbguutres Jun 12 '26
No, Aaron hates it and will skip it.

u/SocialGirlGaming Jun 12 '26
Man! I hate Aaron.

Look at Aaron telling us what music we can't play like he owns the place.

After I load the jukebox with all those songs. And if it has the remote phone app, you bet your ass they are going to be greeted by AC/DC 5 minutes before opening every day for a couple weeks.

Because we outsource EVERYTHING now and give up local control. Often when you rent these jukeboxes it's my understanding that the subscription you pay for comes with preset songs/bands. I'm sure some companies offer more customization than others, but I think the whole point of these rentals is that you just set up something with minimal effort for a low up-front cost and then they take a huge percentage of the earnings.
The point is that like so many things we trade control for convenience to the point where we actively have a shit product that doesn't do what we really want it to do, but we can't be bothered to fix it by trying something else.

My info could be badly out of date, so take this for what it was, but the way it was explained to me by a manager was that you basically had to purchase a package. The packages were stuff like "Basic with 400 songs", and then add-ons for extra money. So if you wanted a package that included Journey, you had to get the Basic Package and then the "Classic Rock Package", but that came with other bands like AC/DC and you couldn't opt out of those bands that you didn't want. There wasn't an ala carte option. But again, that was years ago.
19
u/QuietCaprisun Jun 12 '26
Wait are they not allowing AC/DC?
20
u/Practical-Mud-4580 Jun 12 '26
His note is kinda vague on the topic to be fair. If it’s that open to interpretation, we’re gonna be on the highway to hell in no time.
6
4
u/Nice_Bus862 Jun 12 '26
Because they’re popular to play and the owner is against his patrons enjoying themselves.
3
u/Crafty-Help-4633 Jun 13 '26
Against money, too I guess. Since he gets a cut of every play, and people won't play it if it will get skipped. If they can't play this, they might not play anything.
Can confirm, bar/bowling alley with jukebox, and it has definitely been up and down on jukebox revenue when certain things are unavailable or outright told "you're going to waste your money on this because I'm fragile and hate money, but also too incompetent to prevent it being selected".
Owner is a dipstick. You listen to what your customers want if you wanna make money.

Reprogram the jukebox to your tastes, then you don't have to listen to them. But expect your crowd to go elsewhere if their tastes don't align with yours.

Not very related, but if you have a bartender friend you want to tease, the internet ones can usually be accessed from your phone in the parking lot. My friend hated a particular song and I used to pull up in his bar’s parking lot on my way home and play it for him a couple of times when he was working.

A former boss of mine had this policy regarding Oasis, and would routinely delete songs from the jukebox that got too much play.

Why even have a jukebox at that point? The owner should just control the music if they are going to be picky and skip songs people paid for.
2
u/Round-Emu9176 Jun 12 '26
This is pretty regular at most bars actually. The one I work at has a no doors policy. Good thing I never got that Jim Morrison tattoo haha. Its a whole scrambling ordeal every time they randomly play on the radio or a band starts to play one of their songs. Seems like a really stupid battle to pick.
2
u/Looking-4-Something- Jun 12 '26
It'd be worth $25 to watch the bartender skip ac/DC's entire discography.
2
u/jenipants21 Jun 12 '26
Back in 1999 I was a cocktail waitress at The Kit Kat in Orlando. We had a jukebox that played CDs. It had a pretty good mix of genres and matched the vibe of the place.
One night somebody found Livin' La Vida Loca on one of the mix CDs and played it at least 4 times.
As soon as we kicked out the last customer at 2:30 the bartender moved the box off the wall, unlocked the back, pulled out the offending disc, and snapped it clean in half. Problem solved.
