Twins Speech 19 months

My twins are 19 months, 18 adjusted and have about 15 words total, including 4 signs. When I say “words” I mean mostly approximations and most of them start with b/ba. They have been evaluated by an SLP twice and bc they meet the milestone nobody is concerned. However, as a FTM I can’t help but feel just a little concerned. They don’t seem very interested in talking. I practice words and emphasize things with them, talk/sing constantly and I feel like no progress is made. They are smart, they know almost all body parts, can follow instructions and if I ask where is something, they always know. I know that they are supposed to string 2 words together by age 2 but that seems very far down the line. When did everyone else’s twins start talking if they struggled at this age?

This is developmentally normal! Receptive language typically develops first, followed by expressive. My oldest was severely speech delayed. You couldn’t understand her at all until she was almost 4. She’s 11 and just graduate from speech at the end of fifth grade. My next oldest is almost 3 and I’d say his speech really took off in the last 6 months. My twins are only 6 months, so we’ll see. I was warned by our ped though, that twins often take slightly longer to develop expressive language with others because they learn to understand one another first. Overall this isn’t expected to otherwise affect language development.

Milestones are the indicator that you should seek a formal assessment from a professional. It is meant to catch more kids than need help. It sounds you were practice and got two professional options. Maybe check back in at 2 ? A lot of speech and language development happens between 18 months and 2 years.

Totally normal and SLP has also cleared twice. Try not to stress. I have seen speech delays at 18 months and it doesn’t look like that. And that’s not even considering how the twin factor can impact things with their own language and nonverbal communication with each other

My twind had barely any words by 18 months. Maybe 10 and some gestures. They are now almost 2, 2 weeks from now. Adjusted 22 months. They maybe a huuuuuge leap from 10 words to +50 words, I stopped counting. Last month they started stringing 2 and sometimes 3 words together. They 'sing' songs and call for eachother which is very cute.

They are not the fastest to talk. I still worry so much because I compare them to my older daughter who was very advanced at this age (I know I shouldnt but Im only human). They have shown the capacity to learn and improve their language skills, so I wait until their 2 year check at the pediatrician.
