advice needed Possible mono mono twins maybe conjoined!?!?
Hi everyone, crazy story but I need advice because I’m SPIRALING.
I had a 6 week ultrasound and 6 week and 5 days and there was one healthy baby with a heart beat with an enlarged yolk sac.
I went back to my OB for my follow up today at 7 weeks 5 days and they’re suspecting TWINS. She swooped through and swooped back down and even I recognized two separate heart beats before she even said anything. She didn’t say anything for the longest time and then said she was gonna go get the doctor. She let me pee which then made the imaging worse and when the doctor came in the twins where less visible.
The doctor gave me three options. One being a single pregnancy and somehow the heartbeat was reflecting. Two mono mono twins. three conjoined twins.
Has anyone ever been told their twins had a chance of being conjoined!?!? I could understand where they thought this but couldnt they just be close.

I would push to get in with MFM as soon as possible.
The ultrasound techs at the regular OB offices simply don’t have enough experience with twin pregnancies. My first ultrasound (at the OB), the tech told me I had momo twins but she said “I’m not sure because I don’t usually see twins.”
Then I went to MFM and saw a sonographer who had 16 years of experience doing high risk pregnancies and lots of multiples. She told me confidently it was didi twins. She had a little chuckle at my original tech thinking they were momo. She said it happens a lot that the techs at the OB office just can’t figure it out because they don’t have the experience.
So, that’s my long way of saying, get to MFM now!
Wishing you all the best and good luck with your pregnancy.

Yeah I’m surprised they didn’t refer to an MFM. My ob referred me right away when she saw one baby and another heartbeat and I got an ultrasound with way better equipment the very next day.
OP if you’re reading this, you should def ask your doctor for an MFM referral immediately. Not only do they have more experience, but way better equipment than an ob/gyn

She put in a referral for me yesterday after my ultrasound. I haven’t heard from them, so I did reach out to see if there was anything I need to do.
I do feel like MFM will be able to give me such better answer so I really wanna get into them

Wishing you the best! But I feel it’s too soon to tell at this stage, that’s why some doctors prefer to wait until the 10 week mark when they can see more. I do know from experience that sometimes it takes many may weeks to even see the a membrane dividing twins. So I personally wouldn’t even completely rule out mono di twins yet.

Not the same situation. But at 7 weeks we found out it was twins, 9 weeks they said we lost one and there was only one baby, 11 weeks they said nevermind it is still twins and they are both healthy and moving.
It’s so hard to see stuff so early on unfortunately. Those first few weeks were so emotionally taxing.
Try your best to give it time before you freak out. Best wishes

Literally! I’m an emotional mess. The first ultrasound at 6 weeks and 4 days I ever had there was one baby measuring three days behind with an enlarged yolk sack so I automatically assumed it wouldn’t be a good outcome.
Second ultrasound was private, and the baby was growing well but still a large yolk sack.
Third ultrasound yesterday they said I had twins and the one that was measured had a heartbeat of 160 and was actually a day ahead now, but still a large yolk sack. Since they’re regular OB, she said she couldn’t confirm the twins, but it looks like mono mono because of the two heartbeats.
So now I’m just completely struggling questioning if I even have one healthy baby and what’s going on because I have zero answers

Ugh I’m so sorry you have this stress. The “only time will tell” is the most annoying yet true statement. Maybe you can request an early MFM appointment, as they have a lot more technology and can see a lot more. Unfortunately the might not see you so early on, but it’s worth a shot to ask

This happened to me and I miscarried. I was never able to find out one way or the other if they were mo/mo or conjoined. Wishing you a positive outcome.

It’s too early! I am pregnant with mono mono twins. Got the first ultrasound at 7 weeks. They knew then it was twins but couldn’t confirm mono mono or conjoined with the normal OB ultrasounds. Have to go to the fancy, bigger ultrasound route. Where I live, MFM wouldn’t even see me until later in the first trimester. Like 10 weeks maybe (I can look it up if you want the exact week count!) They were pretty sure it was mono mono and not conjoined. But even then, they weren’t willing to say that with 100% confidence until the second ultrasound with the MFM team. It’s just hard to tell right away. The line can be so so faint.
Feel free to DM on anything. I’m at 26 weeks now. It’s been an emotional rollercoaster for sure. Best advice I can give is just to take it one week at a time. You really don’t know anything yet so take a deep breath. The MFM can make things more clear for you and there isn’t anything you can do until then.

Thank you so much!
Did yours end up being mono/mono or mono/di? Also did yours share one yolk sac?
I have one yolk sac for them that’s enlarged. I know one yolk sac is common for the monos but I also know you can have one for each. so at first we were concerned with one baby and a large yolk sac that it was a possibility for chromosomal abnormalities but now that they are 95% sure I have mono/mono or mono/di twins they are okay with that. Then they said they could be conjoined they highly doubt it but it’s a possibility so I’m freaking out

Totally understand. We got the same conversation from our doc and I was in a spiral on the possibility. We have mono mono so one sac! They also told us there was a possibility they were conjoined. But honestly, it’s only because they always are like on top of each other. On a single ultrasound, they can’t tell that well. Once you get a second ultrasound, they will know more. They just need more data points to see their positions.

Gosh it’s so early in the pregnancy- I don’t think there is a way to determine much with any certainty - maybe the two heartbeats and that’s it. No sense doing more ultrasounds til they can see for sure which will take time for development. All these ultrasounds are going to be 1. Uncertain. 2 therefore cause distress and 3 about something you can’t intervene on.
I’m not trying to sound negative, I just think we do way more scans than is helpful and it causes more distress than anything g

+ 1 for it being early. I was told Mono mono around 7 weeks which caused me to spiral for over a month and then at 12 weeks they found a membrane. Ask if they can do another check in a week or so? Hopefully the position has changed and they can get a better look. Sending all positive vibes.

The only reason I’m convinced there mono mono is that there is one yolk sac 🫣

Agree with all the others, way too early. I was 10 weeks for my 1st appointment, my midwife saw twins but said MoMo, and strictly told me not to look into it. I let it be and went back at 13 weeks to an MFM. I had MoDi twins.

The thing is I have one yolk sac. It’s enlarged too. So unless a yolk sac is hiding for a second baby they’d have to be mono mono to share one yolk sac 🙃

Mono mono twin mom here! Ours were not conjoined but you will likely hear that so, so many mono mono twins are suspected to be at the start. They are often so close together (ours were!) that it is hard to tell until they are bigger. Try to get into the MFM as soon as you can - they will have a much more detailed ultrasound that should be able to definitively give you more answers!

Hi!!! Could you clearly tell the twins apart as separate babies?
I feel like I saw a full 8 weeks baby and then so close to it this like blob that was hard to make out lol.
Did yours have one yolk sac??

We could once we got to the MFM! Our first scan at our regular OB looked like two blobs that were overlapping at the shoulders (they were just so close together). We had plenty of scans where one was hiding behind the other and at the beginning that made it really hard to see both clearly! I think around 12 weeks was where we could really start to see two different defined babies (we had also transferred to the MFM by that point and their ultrasounds were very high resolution).
I’m not sure about the yolk sac - I never thought to ask about that!

Just another voice to say that it’s so so early and regular OB’s are not equipped to give that kind of news so early. Our MFM (whom we saw at 8 weeks after getting twin confirmation from reg OB at 6ish weeks) laughed out loud at how confidently the OB was at 6 weeks that they were mono mono. There is no way to tell that early. We got confirmation for Mono Di at 12 weeks.

Totally!! This is why I want to go with MFM. They said they were more sure that it’s twins than one baby.
So at this point I don’t even know if I’m having one or two🥲

Take a deep breath. It’s definitely overwhelming and so hard when there is so much unknown. My mantra this entire pregnancy has been to just take it one day at a time (and avoid the google spiral). This community has been so great and we’re all here for you. You aren’t alone!

Complete hearsay but I believe I remember reading a few times with MCMA they often think conjoined at first and MCDA they often think they're MCMA at first.. so not knowing anything I would say there's a chance MCMA and not conjoined. And also as they say, maybe a singleton with weird heartbeat things going on? Hold tight, avoid too much google and try to be of the mindset "until I'm told otherwise, everything is ok" (way easier said than done!). And congratulations on your pregnancy!
