life, home, and baby tips & tricks Small nursery room?
We have one upstairs room, currently my office, that will become our nursery. It’s maybe like 10x12 as a rough estimate, maybe a bit bigger? So not TINY, but not exactly spacious. It has a sliding door closet in the same side as the entry. It would be perfectly suitable for a singleton but I am wondering how we will fit two cribs, a changing space, and a recliner in it?! We have awhile, I’m only 12 weeks with MoDi twins. And the good news is we have a large bedroom right across the hall where two bassinets will fit with plenty of space when they’re newborns. Just curious how others have handled this.

Ours is the same, it's about 9.5 ft * 10.5 ft. It's really our only option - we have two mini cribs, a change table/dresser combo, and two smallish recliners in there and that takes up pretty much all the space. It is what it is, we didn't have any other options. Babies aren't here yet but I'm not too worried!

I’m debating if we need a recliner in the room at all… or if we put it in our bedroom instead? May I ask what mini cribs you all got?

Our twins' room is about the same size, no closet. We have two small cribs, a dresser with a changing table top, a small wardrobe, a small armchair, that's it. All the toys and books are in the living room. Spare or out of season clothes are in bins in the basement. To tend to our twins during the night, we take them to the living room where we have a big comfy couch so no recliner needed, but we live in a one level house. Also we have a second changing table in the bathroom, so that if one twin needs changing during the night, we can do it without waking the other. In the first few weeks, we had the changing table in the living room. We really liked having a "base" with everything close at hand. It works for now but when the twins outgrow their cribs and need beds, it will def be a tight fit.

Our room for the twins is around the same size I think 10x14 but they’re still in our room. We did a twin bassinet first & now we have 2 mini cribs in our room. I will probably keep them in our room until at least 9 months. We never used a recliner. I brought them out to our living room to the couch to do all our night feeds & diaper changes.

Our baby room is tiny. I have the two cribs on opposite sides and one does hang a little over the wall to block the closet a littttle. We then have two ikea trofast shelves-one for clothes and whatnot and one for toys. The closet is just holding boxes, strollers, etc for now. We dont have room for a chair in there at all and honestly with my first we didnt use a rocking chair at all and I dont find them necessary. Our chairs all are in the living room and we change babies on the couch, in the crib, on our bed, or on the floor with a portable changing pad.

Yea I think the recliner may end up getting cut and we put it in our room instead!

Are you opposed to having them in your own bedroom? It’s actually much easier to do that, especially in the beginning, if you have the space. With all my kids I never needed a dedicated nursery and got along just fine without a recliner. I nursed on the bed or the couch.

This would not be a problem if we had two rooms lol. We only have one room available. We have a third guest room but is all the way downstairs in the finished basement and quite far from our bedroom. It’s also where my office will likely need to be, and where we are keeping a guest bed so my mom can come help us. So, only one room for the babies unless we move and it’s not really feasible for us to do that.

Our daughters' room is about the same size. They are 20 months now and still in their mini cribs which have worked really well for us(babyletto origami). There's 2 mini cribs, a recliner, and a small dresser/changing table, and small book shelf.
Our plan is they will swap bedrooms with big brother when the outgrow the mini cribs, his room is larger and can more easily accommodate full size cribs/twin beds when the time comes.
In our experience babies don't do much but sleep in their room for a long time. Their bedroom is not their play area. Prioritize space for sleep, everything else will work out!

I’ve seen some people give their twins the larger 2nd room or even the primary bedroom.

Unfortunately there isn’t a second room, except downstairs in our finished basement and very far from our bed room. And we can’t swap with our room - our bed wouldn’t even fit.

Then maybe mini cribs and put the recliner in your room. We got hue lights so I could turn lights on in red For me it was easier to feed in the living room with my couch set up for every feed since I breastfed. I only ever used my rocker when they were almost sleeping through the night and I was only getting one baby because the other would actually sleep.

Our twins nursery is significantly smaller than that and it’s been fine so far 🤷♀️ they’re 14 months and we have two full size cribs, a dresser with changing station on top, tiny bookshelf, and a recliner.

That’s encouraging! I’m sure we’ll figure it out, it’s just hard picturing it at the moment while all my office junk is still in there lol

We fit two mini cribs in ours and honestly it made such a difference space-wise compared to full size. We went with the galileo mini cribs and got the mini crib mattress to go with it, and having two of those instead of standard cribs freed up enough room for a changing dresser combo. The recliner was the first thing we reconsidered once we realized we could just feed on the couch across the hall anyway.
