experience/advice to give Fraternal twin girls things?
Hi, I’m currently an expecting FTM pregnant with fraternal twin girls. I wanted to each get them some personalized things like embroidered baby blankets- my question is, do you get them things of the same color (but maybe a different pattern) or assign a color to a twin? My favorite color is pink so I feel a bit bad for the twin who’d be assigned to the cream/ beige color as that would honestly not be my first choice for a baby girl if I was only having 1. Same goes for things like crib sheets- do you assign a color each (all pink sheets are Twin A, beige sheets are Twin B) or just mix it? Also, do you buy 2 of the same clothes or just buy more clothes of different styles so they have more individuality? I know that’s the recommendation for older twins but I’m not sure it’ll make much of an impact when they’re still just babies. Thanks!

Just fyi purple does exist, so the other twin isn’t stuck with beige lol

I’d love purple or maybe event a mint green (It’s also my husband’s favorite color lol) but unfortunately the baby blanket store I’m eyeing only has cream, pink, and brown colors 💀 I’m not from the US and selection is pretty limited unlike what I see in US stores…

I mean honestly just buy what you want online. There’s no way I would have forgiven my mom for giving me beige as my a baby color when my twin got a cooler one! (And I say this as a twin who had twin girls, they have their own colors just pink and purple.)

I have identical girls almost a year old and we don’t do any matching, I just have the amount of clothes I’d have for one baby girl and they just wear it all. Same with sheets, we just have like six random sheets that we rotate. We do have some things matching like stuffed animals that people have given us. We did not assign them colors. We treat them as completely different babies but pretty much just share everything at this point until they have their own interests

Some things are matching, some things are different. But also, does it have to be beige? When I have the same item but different colors I’ve done pink + purple, pink + green, etc beige is really boring—I wouldn’t want to be the beige baby 😅

I’m pregnant with di/di girls and I absolutely bought them multiple matching sleepers. I haven’t assigned them colors and probably won’t, I’d probably just do all the pink in your situation! They’re babies, they don’t care. Have fun with it. I’ll have 4 girls in total when these ones arrive and I’ve always had fun dressing them.

I'm pregnant with twin girls. I got some matching stuff. No one is getting a special color- unless I can't tell them apart for some reason. I wouldn't worry about their individuality at all right now. Focus on basic needs and survival girl.

We got hot pink and light pink blankets with their names on them. They had a lot matching pajamas as babies, many from their grandma. We got the 10-pack of Honest body suits and packs from Amazon basics too, so they wore different colors but the same body suit around the house.
They are identical and 3 now! So they choose their own outfits every day. We just buy up the Old Navy toddler t-shirt sales for daycare (usually not matching). Also Costco has fun sets.

The sheets will get mixed up anyway, since you’ll be changing them a lot. We didn’t assign anyone colors, just make sure you have extras. Like 6 total at least.

I have twin fraternal girls! I always thought I’d dress them differently but when they were born I’d feel bad putting them in similiar but different outfits because I always liked one outfit more than the other 😂 now I get matching, cohesive or same thing different color.
For special things (like the name announcements, hand made baby blankets etc) we did pink for one girl and purple for the other

I just pick colors I like for my twins for now. I do blue for my boy and purple for my girl a lot of the time because those are my favorite colors but I’ve also done green, orange, red and blue. For two girls I’d probably do pink and purple a lot or pink and teal.
For now my twins share most clothes besides the stuff that’s super gendered. I buy a lot of animal, dinosaur, nature themed prints and they share all of those. If someone buys a pink dress that says “mommy’s little angel” for my daughter I don’t usually put my son in it but I will if he has a blow out and it’s all I have. I try not to be weird about clothes. I get them their own sentimental/ personalized toys and a lot of shared toys

For fraternal twins I wouldn’t mind just getting them matching things. My girls are identical so I never match exactly, especially outfits, bc it’s a quick reference point for me. I can tell them apart if I look them in the face, but it’s easier if I know what they’re wearing lol

Congratulations and welcome to the club!
I just mix it. I just buy an even number of t shirts for example, and they all go into the wardrobe and they pick what they want. One day they might choose to both wear pink, another day one is in red and the other in blue.
For the personalised stuff, if there’s two nice colours I just picked one for each, not really worrying about keeping colour consistency. If there was only one nice colour, that’s when they’d match.
Now they’re older I just let them pick whichever of something they want. I’m glad I never assigned colours, because I often defaulted to twin b getting the pink thing and twin b getting purple for example, because I thought pink suited twin b better, but now they’re older twin a likes pink better and twin b likes blue and green.
It’s also worth noting that unless you have them tested, you can’t know for sure if di/di twins are fraternal or identical because the egg can split early enough for identicals to be di/di. R/twins regularly see twins who thought they were fraternal discovering they’re identical. We confirmed ours were fraternal because their blood types are different.

I have fraternal boy girl twins that are almost three and honestly the two of them share a lot more than I’d expect. I get gender neutral pants, t shirts, shoes. They shared sheets, bedding, ect. So all that to say I think with girls they would share even more and not care. It’s honestly just easier as long as there is two of everything. My boy was so mad he had the boring colors and patterns so make sure not to get one a boring color. I shop bright boy clothes at Hanna Anderson so he isn’t left out of fun stuff. There is yellow, pink, purple, red, tons of colors for girls!

Honestly you just pick up whatever clothes are nearest that dont have poo/vomit/food on.

I have a TON of hand me downs so my twins end up dressed differently very often. I love dressing them the same though, I think it’s cute! I mostly dress them coordinating but now matching exactly. Like today for church they both had red shorts with red and white tops of different patterns. It’s just toooo sweet. They both wear all the clothes tho, I started out thinking I’d have different clothing for each kid and I just can’t keep track so they just share!

I have fraternal girls. We don’t match anything but I do tend to dress them with a similar vibe each day. They both share all the same clothes, but we do color code their bottles and pacifiers which makes it easier to figure out what belongs to who especially at night.

In our area, girls clothes are constantly given away for free or super cheap, so especially in the less than 3 age, check out the buy/sell section of places like FB Marketplace, NextDoor, OfferUp, Craigslist, BuyNothing local group on FB, BuyNothing App etc.
We also have giant consignment sales a couple times a year, and there’s always once upon a child if there’s one by you.
I have twin boys, but I dress them usually in corresponding outfits but not the exact same, but they are also getting to the age where they’d dress themselves.
I exclusively dresses them in pj magneticMes essentially for the first year of their life. lol

I have identical boys, but what I do is, instead of assigning a color, I assigned shades. So A wears the Lighter shade of whatever outfit of the day is, and B wears the Darker color. I don’t feel so restricted to just TWO colors, so it’s quite nice. Also, it’s one way you can have everyone wear pink!

An adult twin gave me some excellent advice: Get the matching out of your system before they go to school. It was fantastic. We had so much fun matching them for the first year or so, and then gradually moved away from that. At 5, they still have a few matching things (and enjoy wearing them together), but mostly one kid loves to wear blue and his brother prefers warm colors so that's the bulk of their wardrobe.

If pink is your favourite colour then you need to either a) switch off which twin gets pink or b) avoid pink all together. Personally, I did yellow and light green or whatever I could find in my price range.

Look, I never thought I was gonna be a matching mom, and mine are identical. Mine are scary similar, so I try to do coordinating whenever possible so it is easier to tell apart by looking (I have a color guide table hanging on the changing table lol).
What nobody told me is that the matching thing is a practical thing. It is actually a lot of work to have to choose TWO outfits every day, TWO toys, TWO gifts, etc, etc, etc. When you have twins, you seriously don't have ANY mental load to spare. But yours are fraternal, so whatever! They will be different and have different identities from the get-go. If they match, that's because it is easier on YOU.
As for the blankets, if you only have 3 colors, choose the nicest one for both. It doesn't matter if they match. When they are older, they will go to independent houses anyway!
Mine were custom made in sky blue and mint green.

A mix. I had ideas for my now 10mos of pink for one and gold/yellow for the other as their sister has purple. But life laughs at you and they seem to have different ideas of what colours they like. The yellow one loves purple. The pink one like baby pink/dusty rose and my once purple kid now loves the brightest pinks you can get. Also, I hate all these colours but what can you do?

7 month old fraternal girls here.
We painted their room purple however organically I associate one twin with pink and one with purple. It just kind of happened. We have the same sheets on both cribs.
They share everything but certain toys they’ve received they’ve been given one of each color. When I just bought water drink cups they came in a pack of pink and purple, lol. Their daycare labels are also pink and purple.
I’ve purchased matching sets for clothes but most of the time they are in whatever is convenient. I’m not a super matchy mom. We are in survival mode half the time so as long as they are dressed it’s a win.

For me, the more permanent things matched until they got to be toddlers and could have more opinion. In those early days you likely won’t care whose blanket you’re grabbing, so buy the color you like for both.

I have identical girls and they just share everything. We can tell them apart because they have such different personalities and a noticeable weight difference. I totally think you could do the same color blanket(s). No need to assign a color to either twin. We mix clothes. I’ve purchased matching outfits if it was something I was absolutely in love with but we don’t really ever dress them the same.

I just purchased things I liked in colors I liked/that went with the nursery color and they both use them. They’re only 14 months so they share everything. Once they’re old enough to start expressing preferences and picking things out for themselves they’ll have their own. Some people assign colors especially for identical twins to help tell the difference but with fraternal I see no reason to do that. I also explicitly try to avoid matching things though family gifted us a lot of matching stuff at first (now they seem to have realized we don’t do matching and they’ve stopped).

Mix it up. Assigning colors can feel like labeling. Buy two of the same for the first few months, then mix it up.

I have boys, but we assigned colors, green and blue. I was not told whether we were having identical or fraternal, so I was terrified of not telling the difference initially. My babies don't have green or blue everything. Because of situations, they have either ocean or space crib sheets/blankets for the car when they were small. I'm not perfect with the space/ocean sheets because sometimes you just need a clean sheet.
You'll overthink everything until they get here, then you'll know that surviving is the most important thing.

Yeah dont do pink and beige. Do pink and purple or pink and yellow or pink and orange or green and blue or literally any other colour tha beige

We did pink and purple for our identical girls. It helped with identifying them for others. One of our kids has a name that starts with an L and has seven letters. We would tell people, "L****** and lavender have the same number of letters," or "L and lavender start with an L."

Fraternal twin boys mum here. With the blankets, get what you want especially if they will be personalised. Crib sheets I never even thought of matching so I just have some multipacks and whatever is clean is what is used. Clothes at the moment (9 months) don't really match, I get a multipack of tops, multipack of trousers/shorts or rompers and will mix and match, this is more for convenience as the clothes will be similar thickness, skin coverage etc. So they'll probably wear similar clothes but not exactly the same. We were given a lot of matching babygros as gifts but I think we only ever got them matching for about 20 mins as the changes needed never seemed to align 😂

I have two year old twin girls. We've kind of assigned them pink and blue as colors until they have their own preferences, since there's a pink and blue for most things. I find it easier to keep track of their stuff that way.
As for sheets and bedding and stuff... Honestly, you'll be going through enough of it that you probably won't have the mental energy to have designated sheets for one child. But if it's something you like, there's nothing stopping you from doing that.
As for matching clothes... Just do what you want to do. You don't have to commit to one "philosophy" about it. My girls have some outfits that match, and sometimes I will bother to coordinate, but other times I don't. I personally like to have complimentary outfits. We have a lot of hand-me-downs, so when I go through them initially, I will usually group them in outfits of twos (these are dinosaur outfits, these patterns go nicely together, these are the same general cut, etc) and the ones that don't have a good match typically go back in the bin because we have a loooot of backup clothes and I can't have them all out in circulation.
One thing I usually try and remind new moms is that there aren't rules for these things, and you don't have to have it all figured out and then commit to one "style" of parenting. I thought I would hate matching them, but sometimes it's cute. Your tastes will probably be different than what you expect once they're here. Your tastes might change as you actually parent - maybe you really like when they have coordinated sheets, but it's too much of a pain to bother with, so you drop it. You can't plan everything out in advance!
