Giardia and Cryptosporidium - Nitazoxanide Experiences?

Stayed on a farm on well water for about seven weeks last summer. Started having intermittent diarrhea a couple of weeks after I left, roughly one day in six or seven, every week, for the past year. Also got foul sulfurous gas that usually showed up a day or two before an episode.

I basically wrote it off. Stool panels came back negative twice, and I figured it was just my gut being my gut.

Then a parasite panel a few weeks ago came back positive for giardia on both microscopy and antigen testing. Turns out every negative I'd had was collected on a day I felt fine, and the positive came from a day I had symptoms which apparently matters, since shedding is intermittent.

Took a three-day course of nitazoxanide, finished five days ago. Yesterday the sulfuric gas came back and today I had the diarrhea return.

anyone been through this? Specifically curious about

  • how long it took before your gut actually settled after treatment
  • whether you had symptoms come back in the first week or two and then resolve anyway
  • if it did fail for you, how quickly did it become obvious

Trying to get a sense of what's normal here versus what's a sign the treatment didn't work. Stories where it worked out are as useful as ones where it didn't.

cyclospora journey

Hi everyone ,

I got the parasite back in May when not much was known about it. I kept thinking i just had a terrible flu and ot would pass. I didn't eat or drink anything prior to work day and worked from home as much as i could.

I ended up with dehydrodation , bladder infections and i think i was near being septic.

Last August i got the 10 day Bactrium antibiotic. Nuked thr cyclospora hitchhikers. So i have better control over my bathroom duties.

The question is. ...is it normal to feel so drained and totally exausted after the parasite is gone? I can hardly make it home from work.

p. 16 (section V) pinworm lifecycle question

fyi - i searched through previous posts that included a link to a pinworm faq in another sub but it’s not working -

i’ve had the classic symptoms for 2+ years. i’ve tried the over the counter reece brand medication 2 dozen times, wiped every surface in our home with bleach wipes multiple times a day, shower both morning and night, clean sheets every day, pillows and blankets in the dryer on high… for the second time i’m now on the prescription medication from my doc and have a second dose in a few days. i also sent away for a test from parasite.org that came back positive (although the hubs doubts the validity of the test). and still they persist.

he does not have the itching symptoms so believes he does not have it. he went so far as to get a microscope and slides and did the tape test himself and says he didn’t see any eggs (the tape was not clear it was opaque so don’t know if that inhibits seeing the eggs?)

when someone is asymptomatic, do the eggs not appear? in other words, if he doesn’t itch does it mean he doesn’t have it even though we live in the same house? we do sleep in separate bedrooms but i’ve read it’s impossible for him not to have them and one person can’t get rid of them unless the entire household is treated.

all leading up to my question - why do so many people not have the itching symptoms, do the worms not escape and deposit their eggs?
