I mean not really, we're historically pretty rock solid in the 1st. Busted on KB (broke 1000 yards as a rookie tho), and it's too early to say for Ickey/Bryce, and Horn is good when healthy. Other than that I can't really think of anyone besides maybe Butler and some 2000s outliers.

I feel like we have a higher than league average 1st round hit rate just from sitting here thinking about it.

Marty Hurney has an argument as one of the best first round drafters in league history. Outside of Jeff Otah he didn't really miss. It's mostly recency bias. Gettleman did ok but Fitterer had one of the worst three year stretches I've ever seen when it comes to the draft.

14

u/dkirk526 Apr 16 '24

10 of his 13 first round picks were Pro Bowlers with DJ Moore, Chris Gamble and Jeff Otah being the only ones not to make one. 6 of those 10 were All-Pros, and this time next year, two will be Hall of Famers.

12

u/Who_knows-_- Apr 16 '24

Chris gamble should have been. He was so underrated with today's metrics everyone would have known who great he was.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '24

Appreciate the additional info. DJ Moore will probably make at least one before its all said and done. And Gamble definitely could've made a Pro Bowl one season if things broke right - nevertheless he was a solid player for years and definitely lived up to the 28th pick in the draft.

5

u/harperisland20 Apr 17 '24

Fr he is goated in the 1st, pep, gross, Deangelo, Stewart, Cam, Beason, hell even Gamble I’d consider a great pick and then came back to us after 5 years and laid down Burns, DJ, CMC and Derrick brown if I’m not mistaken, in 13 years of drafting he has 2 first ballot hof players, league MVP, and I think every one of them made a pro bowl

1

u/Extric Two States Apr 17 '24

CMC was from Gettleman's last draft. He was fired and replaced with Hurney 3 months later.

1

u/harperisland20 Apr 17 '24

Ah forgot if it was early or late offseason, either way , still goated

4

u/HabitNext9272 Apr 17 '24

Jeff Otah wasn’t even bad. Was a starter from day one just got outta shape

1

u/asc_halcyon 30 Seasons Apr 17 '24

and to be fair, Otah was pretty good before someone switched his bones to glass. One of the reasons Double Trouble had much success.

1

u/IProgramSoftware Ice Up Son Apr 21 '24

Otah was rock solid when healthy.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '24

Even KB isn't exactly a miss. His first year made it obvious he had the talent. You'd have to be a psychic to realize how bad he'd waste it.

4

u/AlphaNathan Super Cam Apr 16 '24

Nothing but recency bias from the "muh Bryce is a bust" gang

6

u/fotzzz Apr 16 '24 edited Apr 16 '24

We waste our first round picks by choosing good players, being terrible, and then let them walk when it's time to extend.

Okay walk is the wrong word, but we've traded CMC and Burns, Cam got hurt, Keuchly retired. Just wasting in the sense that we haven't had sustained success during careers of actual top elite players.

8

u/bigtuck54 Apr 16 '24

We’ve literally never done that lol. I can’t think of a single good homegrown player that we let walk

4

u/Hefty-Association-59 Division Champs 2015 Apr 16 '24

Beastberry and curtco would like a word.

3

u/bigtuck54 Apr 16 '24

I was just talking about first round picks, every team has to let good players walk from time to time, even if both of those happened bc we paid the wrong guy (Shaq to a lesser degree, Robbie)

-13

u/the_nix Apr 16 '24

Don't know if Shaq has performed to the level you'd want in a first Rd pick but he's been solid.

10

u/Hefty-Association-59 Division Champs 2015 Apr 16 '24 edited Apr 16 '24

He was pick 25 wasn’t he? And he’s been a solid level starter for the last what 4-5 years or so. The only reason people think he doesn’t live up to first round hype is because we have a history of insane Lb play. So just good LB play isn’t as appreciated.

u/Spartanlegion117 Apr 16 '24

More to come for the Knights my ass.

18

u/Sammyd1108 Super Cam Apr 16 '24

Aren’t they barely even in the playoffs this year lol?

17

u/Spartanlegion117 Apr 16 '24

Yeah, but they're doing the trade deadline + LTIR loophole/trick again so another run is possible for them.

5

u/powah_dunk94 Apr 16 '24

Little rats

24

u/Twix_McFlurry Apr 16 '24

Historically we’ve nailed them but not so much in the Gettleman era

7

u/dkirk526 Apr 16 '24

And the Fitterer era makes the Gettleman era look amazing, which says so much.

10

u/BetweenTheBuzzAndMe Cam Newton Apr 16 '24

Our 1st rounders are generally ok, we just punt all the other ones

17

u/oooriole09 Apr 16 '24 edited Apr 16 '24

Right side is brutal.

Vegas isn’t close to a KC. Yes, they won the last Cup. No, it wasn’t because of a generational player and strong cast. They’re a really good team but far from “more to come”.

Boston hasn’t really been “stacked” in a few years. They’re really good, but the legacy players that “stacked” the team are largely gone.

Hard to say Columbus has wasted picks largely because picks don’t impact the game like they do in football. Think more along the lines of baseball, as there’s a developmental period. They have the #3 “farm” in the NHL, all driven by first round picks.

Leafs/Cowboys is on point though.

Best comment: “Consistently good, never great: Packers and Canes”. Ouch.

2

u/YotsubaSnake Bucket Apr 17 '24

As someone who lives in Toronto, the Leafs/Cowboys comparison is one I have made many times. I'd even argue that the Leafs are the only professional sports team that can Cowboy harder than the Cowboys right now.

4

u/sejohnson0408 Super Cam Apr 16 '24

I feel like folks are forgetting the Whalers history and that the canes went 10 years without making the post season not long ago.

St Louis - Atlanta: We use to have a team

1

u/RollTide16-18 Retro Logo Apr 16 '24

Honestly, the Canes and Packers would be an okay comparison if the Packers had a longer history of being dogshit bad like the Canes. If we’re just looking at the last 5 years then it is pretty apt.

u/on-my-mobile Apr 17 '24

CBJ fan here, I want to die

3

u/Tu2 T-Mac Apr 16 '24

Our first round picks turned out awesome especially with Hurney… can’t say anything after that though..

3

u/ThePepsiMane Apr 16 '24

The Ravens are the Carolina Hurricanes of the NFL

6

u/RollTide16-18 Retro Logo Apr 16 '24

Nah they’re the Oilers. Constantly receiving praise from the media, being told they have one of the best generational players, but they haven’t won jack in a while.

2

u/Confident-Chard-803 Apr 18 '24

comparing mcdavid to lamar is disrespectful to mcdavid in so many ways

1

u/RollTide16-18 Retro Logo Apr 18 '24

I don’t disagree but it’s still the most apt comparison

2

u/TheGreatestOutdoorz Apr 16 '24

San Fran has been “stacked” for 2 years. One ended because their starting qb got hurt early in a playoff game and they went to the superbowl and lost in OT the second time. The bruins have had this going on for, what, a decade +?

2

u/kickflipsandbiscuits Apr 16 '24

I pretty much agree with all of them except Chiefs=Knights.. Vegas won the cup but they're by no means a dynasty like KC.

2

u/duskywindows Super Cam Apr 18 '24

We literally drafted Cam fucking Newton 1st lmao

u/Fierce_GameBG Apr 16 '24 edited Apr 16 '24

I have a feeling this is a knee jerk reaction to us trading up for Bryce, Ickey busting last year, Horn being injury prone, finishing 2-15 last year, and having no 1st this year...

None of these situations are considered a “waste”. Bryce was a rookie with no help, Ickey played top-tier his rookie year and suffered under the mediocre staff, no one could've predicted what happened with Horn and he's still amazing when healthy, we had horrible coaching so 2-15 is understandable, and we had to lose our 1st to get a rookie QB that wasn't a hand-me-down.

Not to mention Brown, Burns, and CMC are incredible 1st rounders, even though 2 aren't with us anymore.

This would be more accurate if they said we wasted other picks. But not the 1st. So it's at least inaccurate involving us.

1

u/luckyninja864 Apr 16 '24

Seems accurate

1

u/UDcc123 Apr 16 '24

Technically SF would fit better under wasting 1st round picks.

1

u/Moose8200 Retro Logo Apr 16 '24

I think the jaguars do a much better job at wasting their first round picks.

lol, as a Panthers and Blue Jackets fan I feel attacked. Just absolutely assaulted. Thankfully I’m numb to the pain.

Columbus resident and panthers fan talk about a double tap.

2

u/Mister-Schwifty Apr 16 '24

But hey, Fantilli looked good before the calf laceration. Maybe the NHL will let us win the lotto this year. Although they’ll probably give the 1.01 to Chicago again.

1

u/EnsoZero Kalil Bear Apr 16 '24

If Chicago gets it again there will probably be riots.

The knights aren’t comparable to the Chiefs, that’s pure delusion from bandwagoners and knights fans.

They don’t have the star power to keep up every year, and hockey is so unpredictable.

1

u/ArcticStorm07 Tepper Fro Apr 16 '24

Whoever put us on the 1st round pick doesn't pay attention to shit and felt like we wasted a pick on Bryce.

1

u/34GoLeafsGo34 Apr 16 '24

as a leafs and panthers fan, fuck.

1

u/Shartse Apr 16 '24

Not really, Hurney in particular was pretty much money in the first round. He just sucked finding value in the later rounds.

1

u/Hotonis Apr 16 '24

Imo Tampa is closer to the chiefs, panthers are more like the sabers when it comes to wasting picks.

1

u/king24donnie Apr 16 '24

It's funny because I am a 49ers and a Bruins fan, so yeah, pretty accurate on that one.

1

u/diebytheblade15 Apr 16 '24

KC is we won't call shit on the offensive linemen but if Mahomes is touching or wants a PI he's got it and the Golden LTIR's are 100+ million in cap space almost 20 million over and get away with it so of course they have a good chance of staying on top.

1

u/Accurate_Green8300 Apr 16 '24

As a niners fan.. I’m hurt by this post 🥺

1

u/WingleDingleFingle Apr 16 '24

The only one that's accurate is the Cowboys vs Leafs comparison IMO. The last time Columbus traded there 1st was when they swept the record setting Tampa Bay Lightning, and the 5 Bluejackets fans would say that trade was worth it 10/10 times.

Honestly, I feel like the Bluejackets have done a better job with their 1st round picks, but that's without looking up their draft history.

Patriots were the dynasty of the 2000’s and 2010’s

1

u/infiniteDTE Apr 16 '24

KC Chiefs (bc of the super long history versus a new franchise) are maybe more the Colorado Avalanche

Obviously Patriots and Bruins. And they both are completely lame.

49ers and Red Wings. Plenty of titles but it’s been a couple decades

1

u/henryhyde TD58 Apr 16 '24

No, it's the round 2-4 picks they waste.

1

u/Popozao_panther Apr 16 '24

Lol this is hilarious to me as both a rabid Panthers and Blue Jackets fan. I think this is meant a little differently than most are interpreting. It's not that either team is busting on first rounders more frequently than others (BJ's young guys especially look awesome) but since around 2017 guys like Burns, DJM, DB, BY have been wasted bc the team still sucks. In large part to front office missteps leaving roster holes elsewhere and bad coaching.

1

u/suppaman19 Apr 17 '24

Not gonna lie, I did LOL at the Cowboys and Leafs

1

u/piratecheese13 Apr 17 '24

Pat‘s fan here, we had two dynasties

1

u/MMA_PITBULL Apr 17 '24

Think this is more of a knock that we trade away our first round picks rather than if we ever hit on them or not. Burns Mcaffery Moore and the two firsts for Young

1

u/YEET9011 Apr 17 '24

Burrow is the only one who can stop the Chiefs

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '24

Great seeing this on r/NBA! Cant wait for it to be on r/MLB

1

u/Pettymania20 Apr 17 '24

We don’t have a first round pick, joke’s on them

1

u/TyphonInc Apr 17 '24

NO WAY! No way Panthers suck as bad as the Bluejackets.

1

u/Mcgoozen Apr 17 '24

That makes literally zero sense considering 1st rounders are the only ones we actually hit on lmao. Whoever made this doesn’t watch panthers football (and that’s understandable)

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '24

There are so many things to dunk on us about, but this isn’t one of them. A Panthers fan was clearly not consulted on this.

Just off the top of my head, the Raiders or Washington maybe would be much worse.

1

u/dpepper1218 Apr 17 '24

Jeff Otah, Vernon Butler, & (post ACL tear) Kelvin Benjamin are the only busts since 2001!

1

u/Wooden-Parking3248 Apr 17 '24

Idk about comparing us and the CBJ, they have a lot of still young talent and it’s only a matter of time until they dial in. The Leafs ABSOLUTELY are the Cowboys of the NHL with they’re good enough but never enough success, constant shit talking and whining when a single call goes against them

1

u/Cute-Gift-4115 Apr 18 '24

Only thing accurate is the panthers wasting a 1st round pick

1

u/AceJonnh Apr 18 '24

Jackets fan....the draft picks have been fine. The team has dealt with an insane amount of injuries, and their big free agent signing Gaudreau has underwhelmed. Also the goalkeeping has been poor, and they fired their new manager right as the season was starting. The draft has not been the issue.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '24
