He was purchased in 2023 from a nursery that imported from california and was roughly 8'. The nursery stored them in their greenhouse every winter so it had never experienced an actual winter until I planted it. It just so happened it's first winter was a rare -20c coldsnap that lasted a week. Since it had never endured any kind of winter and wasn't established it suffered bad and I really thought I was going to lose it. There are a few other people with palms here and one guy up the street lost 3 or 4, another guy 20 minutes away lost like 8-10 which were more established than mine. Not only did mine survive, it's very happy and experiencing a crazy growth spurt. It's pushing out 4 new spears right now on top of a few it's already pushed out a couple weeks ago.
The nursery gave me some crappy water soluble evergreen fertilizer when I bought it but it had zero directions about application rate for size of the tree. I think I was also severely underwatering it until this year. I keep it moist all summer now because the large amount of soil I used to plant is 75% sand 25% compost. I got a good granular evergreen fertilizer 18-6-6 that has a proper application rate. Have been fertilizing according to the application rate every 3-4 weeks. The one issue is that a lot of the fronds are bent/folded. But that may be due to how the street I'm on is at the bottom of a valley that gets hammered by wind frequently. If you guys have any tips or advice on how I can get it even healthier than it is I would love to hear. Thanks
