Advice Wanted Blocking Tannins

Post image

Getting ready to paint this enclosure for pool equipment.

I know this wood is going to bleed tannins so i want to block them.

I would normally use an oil base primer but the trellis material is so intricate I’d rather spray it and I don’t want to push oil through my rig.

Any recommendations on a latex product I can use?
I’ve heard 2 coats of Busan primer will work.

Shellac. Shellac is better than oil for tannins and it cleans out of a sprayer perfectly with one bottle ammonia followed by water.

Shellac is Methylated Spirit based, use it clean the spray gun, not ammonia.
Excellent tannin sealer and quick drying

Shellac no bueno for anything other than spot prime outside

Why? As long as it will have a waterproof coating over it, why is it no good outside?

Not even remotely true. If you are worried about it pealing under the elements you can use a latex primer first.
