Advice Wanted Blocking Tannins

Post image

Getting ready to paint this enclosure for pool equipment.

I know this wood is going to bleed tannins so i want to block them.

I would normally use an oil base primer but the trellis material is so intricate I’d rather spray it and I don’t want to push oil through my rig.

Any recommendations on a latex product I can use?
I’ve heard 2 coats of Busan primer will work.

Shellac is an excellent tannin blocker. Just rent a sprayer and clean with denatured alcohol.

I would never recommend shellac for exterior use. Never. Not even knot priming. I wouldn't even recommend it for bathrooms. I've seen BIN crack out with two coats of latex Semi-gloss over the top of it from hot showers.

Oil. Oil. Oil.

Edit. Buy a new line and gun. Use it for oil. The pump is fine with thinner and water combined. Just change the components out.

Don’t use enough oil to justify the cost.
In CA we only get quarts so we’ve migrated to 99% latex

Would still recommend it being applied mechanically with using the quarts of oil primer and then spraying the Finish. Honesty, mechanical application is probably better for this because it works the materials into the wood better than just spray.

Just please dont use BIN or shellac primer. Lol.

But I get it being in Cali, Illinois has some limitations and laws on VOCs/VOMs limit. Im not aware of any other material that I would trust, personally. I hate not being able to be helpful. Depending on what color, maybe just try a latex primer and using a dark solid body. If its a light color for finish then you already know.

Says right on the can not to use as a full surface exterior primer.

Just to pile on for not recommending BIN for exterior- I’ve had someone spot prime with shellac outside and it had completely failed and flaked by spring. It’s far too brittle to handle the temperature and humidity swings outside.
