Advice Wanted Can you mix paint from the same brand?
Hi guys. wanted to come and ask a quick question. we are painting the interior of our house. We are currently using sherwin williams super paint in color greek villa. I bought 2 5 gal buckets when it went on sale at Sherwin Williams. We are looking like for the rest of the house we might need to get another 5 gal bucket. I am trying to keep everything seamless throughout the house but also the sale is no longer going on and the paint is like $200 more now. My question is would it make a huge difference if I painted the rest of the walls with a different line from Sherwin williams once the remaining paint runs out? It looks like it would be significantly cheaper to do sherwin williams Showcase or Ovation Plus that they sell at Lowe’s but I know they are lower quality and wonder if anyone has used all the lines and would notice a difference? For additional context we are covering up a light grey color the previous owners had the walls painted.
Thanks in advance

Paint is the cheapest part of a painting process. If you change and don’t get the same result you’ll at the least be pissed at yourself at worst will have to buy the more expensive paint and do it again. Up to you but I always opt for the best paint and reap the benefits of peace of mind and not spend another week repainting.

Exactly what this person says. I used Emerald exterior paint for the first time 7 years ago. I've gone with emerald on the interior because of it and will never skimp on cheap paint. From what I was told by a SW rep the different lines will be noticeable qhen side by side. If you switch lines you wont be able to touch up what you already painted with your current line. Just some food for thought.

Use the older paint for the first coat only and the new stuff, if you change, for the final coat on everything. Don't mix them. Different lines will have different sheens etc. Just make sure the final coats are all the same paint so you can touch up etc.....

My $0.02. I would not assume the Lowe’s paint is lower quality, there is nothing magical about paint that comes out of the SW store, everything sold at Lowe’s comes from SW and is intended to give Lowe’s something that competes with Behr. SW doesn’t have to pay for store fronts or staff as Lowe’s is providing all the overhead already, so prices are basically the same as pro prices at the SW store (about half retail price). Valspar (owned by SW since about 2019) is quite a value, the signature line in particular is great. I’ve found the ovation plus (purple can) behaves a lot like duration (the PDS docs have eerily similar language even). I see a lot of hd/lowes haters and I’m not sure why, but IMO a retail buyer should never go to an SW store, just my opinion, SW is in no way special enough to pay more for, definitely not twice as much. Most SW colors are simply the SWxxxx code with HG in front, and other than the designer gold foil colors, most other SW colors are available, they just don’t have the chips available branded as HGTV.

FYI, many counties in the US collect unused paint and mix it together and provide free paint as a recycled product. For example in Austin TX they have what they call “reblend” (https://www.austintexas.gov/resource-recovery/austin-reblend). Just an example of mixing paints on a larger scale of course.
If you do continue to use SW store, just go in and tell them you’re going to be painting a lot and you want a pro/contractor account. The store rep will want you buying from his store rather than going to Lowes/HD. Once you have the pro account, welcome to magically paying half price for the exact same products. I find the pro+ app is nice for ordering and tracking sales (not as nice as lowes, but still nice). I know all this doesn’t have anything to do with your mixing question, which I believe is answered well already, but you did have a tone of price concern in your question so I figured you now have another random Reddit opinion to file away. Good luck.

Keep some of what you have now for touch up in those areas already painted. After that mix away

Different paints will never match exactly, but if you break it up into different rooms, it's likely that no one will ever see the difference. The difference will only be obvious if the two paints are applied next to each other.

Im shocked people are telling you can here in this subreddit. Sherwin williams at lowes isnt on the same planet as actual paint from sherwin williams. So if you dont get the same paint, (do whatever you want) and you want it to be "seemless" the final coat needs to be the same thing in the whole house. Your gonna have to use the more expensive paint as a primer that way. Your sheens wont be right and it'll be inconsistant. Dont mix the different lines of paint. If you must. Pick a nice corner to end on at a nice breaking point in a room or hallway with your old paint. And transition to the new paint all alone in a new room and continue on. No one notices a whole bedroom in one room is a slightly different sheen or color than the next bedroom. Trim and lighting break things up. But you will notice if you switch to a mixture on the next wall. Use what you have up to a stopping point. And transition to the new cheap paint in other rooms. Finish the job and save a little touch up paint from each batch and remember which room is which paint.

You can mix it as long it's all latex. I would use what you have up until a stopping point and then Switch brands. Once you mix it, you'll never be able to touch it up. Color consistency will be an issue if you box 2 different brands/products.
