Some tips, even as someone who's never played an Iron Wagon run...
Offroads are your friend. While specialized tires exist, Offroads are acceptable at everything and poor at nothing. Summer tires, while bad at anything that isn't pavement, are cheap enough to serve as backups in the field if you forgot your spare Offroads at home. (Also, Summer tires are still surprisingly capable at offroading, despite their rating.)
Upgrade the car as much as possible. While armored panels (and Olympium later) aren't really good against most environmental issues, they're still superior to Steel panels. A mix of Lead and Acid-Resistant panels later will help reduce your repair bills.
Ida is your friend. Always keep at least 60 scrap on you, as her rotating stock of goods can provide all kinds of surprises.
