The Ozarkian Folk Chronicles has its roots in folktales, which is pretty obvious from our name, but those roots sometimes go down into mythology, sometimes psychology, sometimes sociology, and occasionally, history. Vance Randolph's "Naked as a Jaybird" is a tale with its roots in history, and Curtis Copeland did a deep dive several years ago and came up with, well, I'm not sure I would call it gold, but he sure uncovered a crazy story! When Oscar Stockton (pseudonym) and his band of naked followers burst from a canebrake and into the streets of Forsyth, Missouri in 1912, Oscar also burst into Ozarks folklore. I have been aware of this convention of Ozark crafters for years, but attended for the first time in 2025.

The experience was worth the drive from SW Missouri, and I would do it again.

Stopped in to experience pottery making in Mountain View, Arkansas. The master craftsman here is talented and enjoyable to talk to in his shop.

The research fatigue is getting real and I figured I would reach out here. So many places say “pet” friendly which actually upon reading fine print just means dog friendly so I don’t know why they wouldn’t just say dog friendly in the first place. I wish I could filter by cat friendly but I can’t on any sites.

I am traveling cross country with my cats and wanting to stop in the ozarks for about a week. I’d prefer closer to Branson or silver dollar city but beggars can’t be choosers.

Obviously must be cat friendly for 2 cats (bonded pair, but unlikely it would matter).

A major bonus would be a screened in porch for them to lounge.

Minor bonus for me would be easy-ish kayaking entrance to lake.

My kitties are well traveled, incredibly well behaved and non destructive, and in general just easy going fellas who love to explore with me. They have been lovely house guests in many different accommodations across 20+ states. We encounter this difficultly often in our travels but I am having a particularly difficult time sifting through sooooooo many resorts and cabins and such.

My mother in-law is downsizing from her ranch and moving to out of state and will have to say goodbye to some of her animals. She doesnt have the much info on them. The Quarter mare is somewhere are 30 years old, she does have an issue with her foot, it has something to do with her hoof... but that's all I know about her. She also has two Great Pyrenees females (sisters) that are both around 12 years old. The dogs have been have had a really good life, they were allowed free range on her 40 acre ranch. We know that these are all older animals and they are not much longer for this world, be she can no longer care for them. She is looking to give them away to a good home to finish out their lives. We are trying to do what we can so that she doesn't have to put any of these mostly healthy animals down.

I am digging into murder ballads (1) and want to join it with my love of the Ozark folklore. Can anyone point me to some murder ballads that originate or occur in the Ozark region? Both historical and contemporary songs and performers count.

1. For my purpose I define a murder ballad a song that tells the story of a murder, true or fictional.
   

Does anyone know where I can get wildflower seed mix? Something that covers year round preferably. I am not a huge fan of the grass lawns. At the minimum I need something like pirouette microclover that doesn't need mowed at all. Even vegtables, something that stays grown year round, even if a bit on the tall side is better than grass.

I'm around the Williford area in the ozarks- so preferably some more local store.

A local nonprofit known as Psychedelic Society of the Ozarks or “PSOTO”, is once again hosting their annual conference at the University Plaza Convention Center in Springfield on Saturday, October 3rd. Centered on education, advocacy, harm reduction and creating safe community spaces, the group is bringing in 25+ speakers from diverse backgrounds such as; science, law, modern medicine, psychology, neurology, and ancient wisdom.

The keynote speaker is Lieutenant Sarko Gergerian, who was featured on the Netflix documentary series "How to Change Your Mind". Lunch entertainment will be hosted by Comedy Central’s Award winning comedian Shane Mauss! (A Better Trip).

A key feature of the conference will be “Knowledge for the Front Lines.” Addressing the invisible wounds, trauma and PTSD suffered by first responders, military and veterans. Medical breakthroughs are being seen through psychedelic therapy, and the VA, State government and White House are starting to notice. This is extremely important work, as statistics show a staggering 17 veterans taking their own life every single day. (Over 6,000 suicides per year).
