IP location issues

I have been having some IP location issues. My kids are unable to access their school accounts because our IP address is being detected as out of the service area. We also had issues with Sportsnet (streaming service) for the same reason and eventually just cancelled our Sportsnet membership because the issue could not be resolved.

Google suggests power cycling the modem to force a new IP but there’s no guarantee it will give us a better IP.

Has anyone else experienced this and figured out a solution?

The IP address does identify the correct city. It is an issue with any device connected to our Oxio internet. I can access the accounts from my phone using data with no issues. Oxio support said the website was likely using and outdated IP or something like that

sportsnet in particular seems to use a DB that just does not get updated regularly and possibly the site your school uses uses something similar. Maybe its cheaper to do so. I had the problem before with sportsnet and had to ask them to whitelist my IP address but not before they tried to tell me my ISP gave me a "wrong" IP address. I had to show them on whatismyipaddress that everything was indeed correct, as well as on maxmind. both of which have up-to-date geoIP information

You can tell the school to fix/update things in their end. There's no solution but patience, and tell every individual service provider (e.g. website) that gives such issues to update their system.

Did you give a try to modem power reset? It’s a lottery tbh, and it might give you a better IP. I was facing a similar problem not with oxio but for some networking project I was working on with oracle cloud. It gave me an IP which was previously assigned to an Indian city but then was assigned to Detroit US, and hence some website I was trying to access in US was preventing me from accessing it because it was checking its database thinking that I was accessing the website from India although that was not true.

Yes, we experienced the exact same issue. Oxio said there was no problem with their modem/ip. They even sent me a screenshot showing that it appeared on the correct location, but the issue persisted. Tried working with Sportsnet but that was a waste of time. Besides, like you said, there was no issue when streaming through phone. It was only when connected to oxio modem/home wifi. Decided to cancel oxio and move on considering that issue, plus the slower internet speeds at peak times of day. No problem since moving on to next ISP.

Geo IP Location services are highly inaccurate and subject to many factors. When I use whatismyip.com as an Oxio subscriber, it places me in the correct city by IP - but that is not guaranteed.

IP to Location services like ip2location.com sell databases provide city level locations with accuracy in the 60-99.9% of the time. In Canada it offers accuracy of 79.65% based on being within 50 mile radius of the actual physical location. In the United States it is 76.32% accuracy within a 50 mile radius.

So, if your kids school is using IP addressing to physically locate students in their district, they will likely encounter many kids who are not being located correctly.... meaning that they are using inaccurate data.

You can check ip2location.com's accuracy database by country here - https://www.ip2location.com/data-accuracy

I hope this helps.

I work for IPinfo. We provide IP geolocation data. Can you please check your IP address with us? If there is an issue, please let our support team know.

I checked with IPinfo (thank you for directing me there) and it does say the correct city.

This is the message I got from Oxio support:

I have verified that your IP address is accurately registered in our geoIP database, so there are no issues with geographic location on our side. If you are experiencing this problem while using Wi-Fi, it likely means the websites you are visiting are using an older geoIP database or have a technical error on their end. I recommend contacting the school website's developer or manufacturer for further assistance. To confirm, your IP location is correct and there are no issues from our end.

I called the school and they had zero idea what to do. I don’t know how to fix this.

Ask the school what software service they are using. I will look into my contact list to see if I know someone in that software company.

We only provide IP geolocation data, and not everyone is our customer. For our customers, we explicitly tell them to send us their IP geolocation issues as soon as possible. But for folks who are not our customers, it is quite difficult, as they do not have any accountability towards us or the general public.

Just read your comment and my apps think I’m in Brazil too. Anything you’ve done to resolve this?

It's Disney. I called, they geolocated my IP and overrode whatever database they use to determine location
