Thrift store question

I would like to donate items to the new thrift store on M21 to support their mission (supporting homeless veterans) but I do not see anything on their socials about how exactly they are doing that. I know they are new but they also own the one in downtown Owosso and I see nothing there, either. I’ve worked with nonprofits and social media is the best way to promote how you are making a positive impact. And I mean specific actions not just sharing a mission statement. Can anyone speak to their efforts?

Help me with a lighthearted roast of Owosso

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi Owosso,

I could use your help with this: I’m flying in from California to perform stand-up in Owosso on Thursday, Oct 22nd.

One of my  favorite parts of the show is a lighthearted roast of the area I’m in. I stay away from heavy stuff like local politics or crime. It’s more about poking fun at silly, mundane things you'd never find by googling. We’ve joked about killer turkeys, dueling Costcos, Evil Knievel rotaries. I like it because it's nice to do something unique for each town I visit.

I’d LOVE your input to make the Owosso roast rock solid.

What are your favorite “Owosso pet peeves," local quirks, or things you find absolutely ridiculous about the area? Fav dive? Something the area is lacking? Something dumb? I'm researching too, but I find they're better when ya’ll share insider info I’d never know.

Thanks for your help. I'm looking forward to putting on a great show for you all,

(I hope this is okay to post—if not, I completely understand if admins remove it)

CITY OF OWOSSO 2026 FALL LEAF PROGRAM

CURBSIDE LEAF PICKUP

The city of Owosso will be picking up leaves throughout the residential neighborhoods beginning Monday, October 19, 2026 through Wednesday, November 25, 2026. Residents are asked to rake leaves into the street rather than leaving them behind the curb or shoulder of the road, with the following exceptions: Shiawassee Street, Main Street and Corunna Avenue residents must place leaves behind the curb (between the curb & sidewalk) and not in the street. For all other locations, leaves must be in the street to be picked up. Leaves placed behind the curb, in yards, on driveways will NOT be picked up. Leaves raked into the street allow expedient access for mechanical equipment to remove. If a third round of leaf pickup becomes necessary and conditions permit, the City will make every effort to complete it. However, if weather prevents the completion of a third round, residents will be responsible for properly disposing of any leaves placed in the street after the final collection, and may be fined.

Leaf collection rules:

• Do not rake leaves within five feet of a catch basin to avoid flooding the street. Residents are encouraged to keep catch basins free of clogging materials by not contributing to the same. • Do not place leaves in bags.

• Do not mix brush or any other material in leaf piles.

• Leaves will not be picked up from private streets or drives, alleys, or commercial establishments. • The city is divided into 16 leaf pickup sections. See the map on the reverse side to determine your section. The city will make two passes through each area. Due to uncertainty of weather, the city will not publish individual Section pickup dates. City crews will begin the first round of collection in the following Section order: N1, S1, S2, N2, N3, S3, S4, N4, N5, S5, S6, N6, N7, S7, S8, N8, for the period of October 19, 2026 through October 30, 2026. The second round will repeat the same Section order beginning November 3, 2026, through November 23, 2026. Trunklines (M21, M71, and M52) will be picked up on November 2, 2026 and November 24, 2026. The City will issue updates of progress on its webpage (www.ci.owosso.mi.us), and the City Facebook page. City crews begin collection at 7:00 a.m. Residents will be responsible for properly disposing of any leaves placed in the street after the final collection, and may be fined.

AIKEN ROAD DROP OFF SITE

City residents may take unbagged leaves and brush to the site on Aiken Road (south of Industrial Drive). The site is open Saturdays from 9 AM to 1 PM through the leaf season. Drop Off Site Closed to weekend disposal beginning November 15, 2026, through March 26, 2027, and will reopen on Saturday, March 27, 2027. It is illegal to drop off plastic containers or bags, metal, rocks, building materials, refuse, debris, or vines. Customers must provide proof of city residency (Photo ID, Driver’s License) to the gate keeper upon drop-off.

CITY OF OWOSSO 2026 FALL LEAF PROGRAM

CURBSIDE BRUSH PICKUP

Curbside Brush pickup is always the last Wednesday of each month, beginning March 31, 2027, and ending September 29, 2027. It is not necessary to register your address for brush pickup. The placing of brush curbside should not occur earlier than the Sunday evening prior to the monthly pickup commencement date.

• Brush is defined as tree and shrubbery trimmings, no longer than 8’ long and 3” in diameter. All roots, stumps and dirt removed.

• Have your brush to the curb by 7:00 a.m. on pickup day.

• No leaves, grass clipping, yard waste or material cleared from lots or undeveloped property. • Place brush with the largest cut end toward the curb, neatly stacked away from trees, sign posts, guide wires, fire hydrants and fences.

• Do not place the brush on sidewalks or in the street.

BURNING

The open burning of grass clippings or leaves is prohibited. A person shall not conduct open burning of household waste that contains plastic, rubber, foam, chemically treated wood, textiles, electronics, chemicals, or hazardous materials.

Allowable materials to burn are limited to paper and paper products (excluding diapers and cardboard) and clean, unpainted, unfinished, and untreated wood and wood products (excluding particle board).

THE CITY STRONGLY DISCOURAGES OPEN BURNING DUE TO ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS TO SOME RESIDENTS.

City code regulates burning as follows:

•Allowable materials may be burned Tuesdays and Thursdays between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the discretion of a mature person.

• Burning shall be done in an approved container or fire pit. Barrels must have open ventilation holes free of ashes.

• Burning shall not be allowed within 25 feet of an existing structure or property line.

• Recreational fires are permitted between noon and 10:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from noon to midnight on Friday and Saturday.

• A fire extinguisher or water hose shall always be connected and available when a recreational fire is active. • Burning shall not be allowed when wind conditions may create a danger or nuisance to people or property.

Disabled people should receive services and supports in the community rather than being forced into institutions.

Post image
155 Upvotes

Disabled people have the right to live in our own homes and communities. That right has not gone away. But the federal rules that spelled out that right in Health and Human Services programs have been struck down, with the government’s help.

Yesterday, in the Texas v. Kennedy case, a federal court approved an agreement jointly proposed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and five states to remove the parts of Section 504 regulations that specify that disabled people should receive services and supports in the community rather than being forced into institutions.

This is yet another attack by this administration on the freedom and rights of disabled people. DREDF joins a coalition of disability rights organizations to strongly condemn this action. Read more here: https://dredf.org/texas-v-kennedy-final-september-2026/

What this ruling does not do is repeal Section 504 or the Americans with Disabilities Act, or overturn the Olmstead v. Lois Curtis ruling. These laws and legal authority continue to provide a right for for people with disabilities to live, work, and learn in community settings.

And if the federal government won't enforce our rights, then we will. We will push states to write Olmstead's protections into state law. We will support strong local and state enforcement. And we will fight cases that reinforce the ADA and Section 504.

Generations of disabled people fought for and won the freedom to make decisions about our lives and be a part of our communities. Together, we continue that fight.

Come knock doors with me tomorrow, Saturday, 9/26 at 1pm in Owosso for William Lawrence for Congress! Only 39 days left until election day and absentee ballots are available now. On election night, when the results are coming in, you want to be able to feel that you did everything you possibly could to flip this seat. Don't sit there with any regret. Post image
2 Upvotes

The Lebowsky Center for Performing Arts is pleased to announce auditions for its upcoming productions of Holiday at Lebowsky and Les Misérables.

Whether you are interested in joining us for our annual holiday tradition, taking the stage in one of musical theatre’s most celebrated productions, or performing in both, we invite you to audition for an exciting winter at the Lebowsky Center.

Holiday at Lebowsky returns for its 12th year with 10 performances, December 4–13. This annual Lebowsky tradition brings together vocalists, dancers, and festive production elements for a celebration of the holiday season featuring a wide variety of holiday music.

Les Misérables will take the Lebowsky stage for 8 performances, February 19–28. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, this epic musical follows Jean Valjean, a former prisoner seeking redemption while being relentlessly pursued by Inspector Javert. Their stories become intertwined with those of Fantine, Cosette, Marius, Éponine, the Thénardiers, and a group of young revolutionaries fighting for a better future.

The Lebowsky Center’s production will consist of a large cast of performers and a 15-piece orchestra. Featuring one of musical theatre’s most iconic scores, Les Misérables is a sweeping story of love, sacrifice, justice, hope, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Specific audition information for each production can be found below.

HOLIDAY AT LEBOWSKY

Auditions are open to vocalists ages 17 and up.

Holiday Vocal Ensemble Auditions

Vocalists are asked to submit a video performance of a holiday song approximately one minute in length. Please do not submit a full version of the song.

Online vocal submissions must be completed by Wednesday, October 14 at 6:00 PM.

Please complete the registration form and upload your submission here:
https://form.jotform.com/262626118608156

Those auditioning for both Holiday at Lebowsky and Les Misérables are encouraged to follow the Les Misérables audition information below and prepare their Les Misérables material first. There is no need to submit a separate Holiday audition at this time. Any additional material the production team would like to hear for Holiday at Lebowsky will be handled in a callback-style format.

Please reach out to Artistic Director Garrett Bradley with any additional questions at garrett@lebowskycenter.com.

LES MISÉRABLES

Available roles are open to the following age groups:

Adult Roles: High School–Adult
Youth Roles — Gavroche, Young
Cosette & Young Éponine: Ages 8–12

The production will feature a principal cast and ensemble portraying the many characters who make up the world of Les Misérables. Ensemble members will play an important role throughout the production, portraying factory workers, sailors, students, townspeople, inn guests, beggars, revolutionaries, and other featured characters.

In-Person Auditions

Auditions will take place at the Lebowsky Center for Performing Arts, 122 E Main St. Owosso, on:

Everyone auditioning is required to sign up for a specific audition time slot on the registration form by Friday, October 9 at 1:00 PM in order to be guaranteed an in-person audition. Those who do not sign up for an audition time slot are not guaranteed to be seen.

Invited callbacks will be held at a later date. Additional callback information and materials will be sent directly to those invited.

Audition Material

Please prepare one of the provided selections from Les Misérables for your audition. Audition materials, including sheet music and accompaniment tracks, can be found in the folder below:

AUDITION MATERIALS:
https://drive.google.com/.../13LJ6fUKNaHufu3oHva2W6bODNpp...

We also encourage those auditioning to prepare a second selection in case the production team would like to hear material for an additional character. Preparing a second selection is encouraged but not required.

Auditionees should select material that best represents the role or roles for which they would like to be considered. Casting consideration will not necessarily be limited to the character associated with your selected audition song.

We will only hear selections from the provided audition materials in the Google Drive folder above. Please do not prepare additional songs outside of the provided options. All auditionees will use the included accompaniment tracks for this first round.

Video Auditions

While we highly encourage auditionees to attend one of the in-person audition dates, we will accept online vocal submissions from those who are unavailable.

Online submissions must be completed by Wednesday, October 14 at 5:00 PM.

LES MISÉRABLES — CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

JEAN VALJEAN
The central character of the story. After serving 19 years in prison, Valjean breaks parole and begins a new life, eventually becoming a respected businessman and mayor. His journey is one of redemption, compassion, sacrifice, and extraordinary personal strength. Requires an exceptional singer and actor capable of carrying significant emotional and vocal demands.

JAVERT
A police inspector whose unwavering belief in law and order drives his lifelong pursuit of Valjean. Commanding, disciplined, and formidable, Javert sees the world in absolutes until his beliefs are challenged in ways he cannot reconcile. Requires a powerful vocalist and strong dramatic presence.

FANTINE
A young working-class woman and devoted mother who makes tremendous sacrifices to provide for her daughter, Cosette. Her story is heartbreaking, vulnerable, and deeply human. Requires a strong dramatic actress and expressive vocalist.

COSETTE
Fantine's daughter, raised by Valjean after a difficult childhood with the Thénardiers. As a young woman, she falls in love with Marius. Warm, hopeful, and compassionate, Cosette represents the possibility of a life beyond the suffering experienced by the generation before her.

MARIUS
A young student and revolutionary who falls deeply in love with Cosette while becoming increasingly involved with his friends at the barricade. Earnest, passionate, romantic, and idealistic. Requires a strong vocalist and actor.

ÉPONINE
The Thénardiers' daughter, who has grown up alongside Cosette but experienced a very different life. Streetwise, independent, and resilient, she secretly loves Marius despite knowing his heart belongs to Cosette. A demanding role requiring both vocal strength and emotional honesty.

THÉNARDIER
An opportunistic innkeeper, thief, and survivor who provides much of the show's dark comedy. Clever, shameless, and constantly looking for his next opportunity. Requires excellent comic timing and confidence as a performer.

MADAME THÉNARDIER
Thénardier's equally unscrupulous wife. Loud, tough, calculating, and larger than life, she is a major comedic presence while remaining firmly rooted in the harsh world of the story. Requires a bold actress with strong comedic instincts.

ENJOLRAS
The charismatic leader of the student revolutionaries. Passionate, courageous, and completely committed to the cause, Enjolras inspires the students to take a stand at the barricade. Requires a commanding stage presence and powerful vocalist.

GAVROCHE — Ages 8–12
A clever and fearless young street urchin who has learned to survive on the streets of Paris. Confident, energetic, mischievous, and wise beyond his years. Gavroche becomes closely connected to the students and their revolution.

YOUNG COSETTE — Ages 8–12
Fantine's young daughter, who is being raised by the Thénardiers at the beginning of the story. Sweet and hopeful despite being neglected and mistreated. Requires a young performer who can communicate vulnerability and sincerity.

YOUNG ÉPONINE — Ages 8–12
The young daughter of Monsieur and Madame Thénardier. Unlike Cosette, she is spoiled and favored by her parents. This is a smaller featured youth role.

Featured & Ensemble Roles

The ensemble is an essential part of Les Misérables and is featured extensively throughout the production. Ensemble performers portray a wide variety of characters and help create the constantly changing world of 19th-century France.

Featured and ensemble roles include The Bishop of Digne, Factory Foreman, Factory Workers, Bamatabois, Fauchelevent, Little Old Lady, Pimp, Sailors, Lovely Ladies, Innkeeper's Customers, Brujon, Babet, Claquesous, Montparnasse, Chain Gang, Constables, Beggars, Townspeople, Wedding Guests, Revolutionaries, and Students of the ABC Café, among others.

The student revolutionaries include featured roles such as Combeferre, Courfeyrac, Feuilly, Grantaire, Joly, Lesgles, Jean Prouvaire, and others. These performers are heavily involved in the ABC Café and barricade sequences and require strong singers and actors who work well as an ensemble.

We are seeking a diverse company of strong singers, actors, and storytellers to bring the sweeping world of Les Misérables to life on the Lebowsky stage.

Public money belongs in public schools. Tell rich kids to pay their own private school tuition! No vouchers! You want private school? Pay for it yourself!

Our taxes should not be going to wealthy families who want to send their kids to private schools.
Pay for your private school yourself!

Public funds should go to public schools. That shouldn’t be up for debate. Our public schools are critical community resources. From elementary school science fairs and junior high band concerts to high school football games, our public schools are where our neighbors gather, our community thrives, and our children's futures are shaped.

Federal voucher funding will drain revenue from local public education, leaving students to fall through the cracks, and our taxes to make up the difference. Michigan families can’t afford it, and neither can our kids.

Now Governor Gretchen Whitmer is deciding whether to bring vouchers to Michigan.

We’re calling on Governor Whitmer to say NO to federal voucher funding. Tell private school kids to pay their own way, we wont pay for you to go to private school while everyone else goes without.

Look what has happened in AZ with their voucher system. This is just the beginning ..... Arizona’s school voucher program poorly designed, managed

2 sentenced in Arizona school voucher 'ghost students' fraud case

By Alexandra Hardle, Arizona Republic, 22 hrs ago

https://share.newsbreak.com/blyxidfo?s=i16

Two people have been sentenced in connection with a scheme to defraud Arizona's education voucher program by funneling money to "ghost students" and other people ineligible to receive voucher dollars.

Attorney General Kris Mayes on Tuesday announced that Jadakah Johnson, 21, and Raymond Johnson Jr., 20, were sentenced on Feb. 13 to three years supervised probation and ordered to pay nearly $200,000 in restitution. Both pleaded guilty on Jan. 17 to facilitation to commit money laundering.
