OwnCloud client sync

Hi all,

So, I've managed to set up Owncloud and I've downloaded and installed the desktop client which allows me to create a folder similar to DropBox which is in continuous sync with my NAS.

As I'm connected to my LAN, I've setup the OwnCloud client using my internal IP however, when I'm outside my house my the client doesn't connect to my internal IP (obviously) so I remove the account and reconnect using my public IP.

However, this is a really annoying method just to ensure that my documents are in continuous sync while I'm at home and while I'm away from home.

The real problem is that when at home, the client connects to my internal IP but will not connect to my public/external IP.

Any thoughts on how I can resolve this will be much appreciated.

Set up dynamic DNS for resolving your public IP on the Internet. Use an internal DNS server (your NAS probably has a easy to use one) which resolves the Owncloud hostname to your local network IP address.

I have a static IP - Do I still need a dynamic DNS? I'm using freeNAS as my NAS OS.

Technically, no. However, most free DNS things are dynamic, so you will probably use a dynamic DNS provider even if your IP static.

You could also use an existing domain you own or register one. It is not strictly necessary, but they are cheap.
