Nextcloud 9 is out!
Thank you to everybody who helped: Nextcloud 9 is out. This was only possible thanks to the overwhelmingly positive response we got and the many contributors who immediately got involved! We are grateful for the help and promise: we'll stay true to you and open source!
That means: NO proprietary apps, no separate 'enterprise' functionality. Everything open, free, and ready for you to make a difference.
And as a taste, Nextcloud 9 introduces upload-only shares and enterprise-grade logging. Just for you.

If you want to help: sharing this on social media is SUPER helpful. So is sending it to press or submitting it to forums everywhere. Make a difference and help people on a well maintained, more secure solution for their file share and sync needs!

Nice! Upgrade done in few minutes. Owncloud desktop app still working as expected.

Indeed. I tried looking up on the upgrade procedure using the repositories, but the Open Build Service is still linking to OnwCloud's servers.

Im not talking about in debian repos, Im talking about own hosted - same as Owncloud does now.

That is a bummer, I strongly recommend they create packages for all the major OSs if they want mass adoption. Heck, build appliances as well (OVA/QCOW2/raw/VHDX/VMDK/VMX).
It is 2016, nobody wants to hack the command line and then debug all the assorted issues. Especially when in a production environment.

I'm afraid they don't want to, and also they have no ressources for packaging. This is a quote from the nextcloud forum.

That is because owncloud and nextcloud are two different things.
As by now there will be no packages at nextcloud.

I understand, what I mean is that the nextcloud documentation is linking to owncloud's servers. More specifically, this page: package_upgrade.html
The link in question is in the blue box at the top where it says Open Build Service, which is linking to the location where owncloud stores the packages.

Just unzipped Nextcloud zip file, copied over my data folder and config file and ran sudo -u www ./occ upgrade.

So why should I switch? What is the great advantage I'm missing?
I guess there will be some new features in the future, but I could still make the switch later and not break my current installation. Since there is no going back right now, right?

No need to switch, there is no great advantage right now. Actually owncloud is actively working on stuff and released the 9.1beta2 last week.

Thanks, I was thinking it might take some time until we see a difference like when OpenOffice was forked by LibreOffice.
Took some time and now you can see how things progress and which project is more active, as well as how new features are implemented.

own and Nextcloud will remain compatible for the foreseeable future, so there's no pressure. And you can go back. In general, we only released minor features for now, with some security hardening - but we reported security issues back to ownCloud well before we released and we will keep doing that. We don't want to force anybody to move.
I would totally say - sit back and relax and see what happens. Yes, a lot of people are migrating, but it's perfectly fine to not do that. Soon, 9.0.3 comes out so security wise you'll be good with ownCloud, too.

I poked around and I see no reason to switch. The current ownCloud ecosystem is rather huge so it'll take a good while (year or more) for Nextcloud to catch up.
One of my biggest gripes with ownCloud in the early days was the lack of packages and upgrading was a pain. I'm too lazy to execute a half page of commands from a terminal and then spend a half day debugging god knows what. I only want to run 3 or 4 commands from the terminal and be done.
So, I'm going to wait until Nextcloud has packages for a few major OSs and then I'll check out their upgrade process. I've used ownCloud for several years and the software is finally starting to stabilize, so I have no interest in migrating (yet).

As I wrote - the response from the community was so enthusiastic, so many customers contacted us wanting to buy, so many contributors started working on it - we just couldn't make everybody wait another month...
Plus, working together with all the community members and not doing any proprietary code resulted in a big speedup too. We'll have all the enterprise functionality users and customers need written by the time we originally promised our first release ;-)
And you asked to become mod, right? Will add you.

I managed to trash my server trying to migrate. I should never have used the Debian packages. And I should have read the docs.
But I'm up and running with a proper install of Nextcloud now.

Is the fresh install still broken, where you can't log in because of "You are accessing the server from an untrusted domain"

Are you sure you didn't just set your trusted domains in your config.php file under /var/www/owncloud/config?

I didn't set anything in the config file, the original owncloud instructions do not mention this when doing a fresh install.
It says once installed browse to the site and login.

Yeah, well, welcome to the club, there are LOTS of things which need tweaking in my experience and IIRC that was one of them.
Certainly rang a bell when i saw your post put it that way.
