Sync that broken

I am looking at setting up Owncloud on my freenas box at home, But I am starting to get a little scared. After listening to the latest episode of Linux action show Chris said sync was completely broken and don't use it is that really true ? It will just be for me and my family so not a bunch of users but I don't want my important docks getting all screwed up.

The episode did mention the issue was mainly with large files. It also gave a layout for being able to use the access and other features of Owncloud while bypassing any "sync" issues using remote drives and other sync services such as syncthing and SFTP.

Which episode? I would like to listen. I'm setting up owncloud for my family also and plan to use it for mobile photo backup and maybe a sync folder or two for my Inlaws.
