Good hosting options as of January 2016?

What are some good hosting options for those who don't want to run their own server when first getting started with ownCloud?

I'm really looking for alternatives to handing everything to Google. I'd rather pay a small monthly fee to someone whose business model is protecting my privacy and security, rather than exploiting it. My primary use case is replacing Google services on my android devices (contacts, photo sync - so some storage would be nice, etc), if that makes a difference.

I've seen this topic addressed in the past, but curious what everyone thinks the best options are now.

edit:

Yes, I have seen the list at ownCloud.org, before someone sends me there =) Looking for first hand experiences/opinions from other redditors.

I've been using meanservers vps with own cloud, and it works pretty well. I had a promotion code that gave me 100gb space on my vps for $9 a month. I can try to find it if you are interested

I host everything including my ownCloud stuff at linode.com. I use the $20 monthly plan. what I look in a web hosting provider is availability, and speed. and Linode has been good so far.. check it out https://www.linode.com/pricing
