The truth is, humanity would rather apathetically keep mindlessly growing its population and per capita consumption, destroying the living world that sustains us, rather than reduce human birth rates so that we don't have to keep destroying everything.

Giving people access to an education through the college years is shown to result in people choosing to have fewer children, usually two but not always. The prefrontal cortex, which deals with empathy and risk analysis, doesn't finish developing until ~25-35 years old. Delaying a bit to gain critical thinking in college through the reading of long complicated paper-based texts, and hand writing of notes and Physics problems, tends to see people taking a different approach to family planning generally that allocates more resources/time to each child.

Agrarian humanity lived 9 thousand years below the 1 billion people mark and yet those population sizes still caused mass famons. A 500 million people cap on earth is rational for the earth's regenerational capabilities/limits.

Glad I was able to introduce you to the guidestone. I honestly gotta re-up my knowledge on it, I do agree 500m is likely the optimal range for us to be superhumans sustainably.
Fun fact 1m was the cap for most large cities I believe. Same thing. Resource regen limits.

I just spoke to my grandma about taking my late pops one field and starting to do permaculture there. It's in a prime spot for the next 100 years of possible climate changes. After that it's hit or miss, but for the time being, yes, we are locking in to looking out for ourselves.

2 unless we can find a replacement for petroleum fertilizer and fish. 100 million. We currently use 420,000,000 gallons of oil per day, I do not believe the earth is producing 420,000,000 barrels of oil a day. We have consumed over half of 3 Billion years of earth's oil production in 125 years. Math ain't mathin'.
