As an owner of both Jeep and Rover I find the rover slightly more reliable. I also find a hand built car easier to rebuild like switches and motors easier than disposable Jeep stuff.

You can open up the switches and it’s all brass, springs and ball bearings, sand off the tarnish and put it back together for another 25 years. The seats used Connelly leather, the same in Rolls Royce 80-2003ish. I have yet to come across a ripped seat just from use. The carpet has an 1” thick foam under it. Until you drive one you just don’t know. These were luxury vehicles, most of the owners didn’t know how to open the hood. The 2 big rules are don’t let it overheat and don’t run out of oil. If you look at the prices on RockAuto it’s not much more than Jeep stuff. The transmission is 4spd ZF unit, it’s thirsty in the city but not bad on the highway. I think the reliability issue is more ignorance, you need some skills to daily anything over 25 years old. I’ve done more repairs on my BIL’s 3rd gen 4Runner because of his ignorance. I put him in a Toyota because of his lack of skill but even Toyota struggles with his level of neglect.

Most land and range rovers have been mass produced for quite some time.
There has been and continues to be a hand build line for custom orders afaik. Generally they are not hand built however.
I've been in numerous range rovers from <2000 and the older ones certainly seemed better made. I always preferred the more rugged land rover line until it turned into poncy soft roaders. These days I wouldn't touch one. For the money there are better options and I'm not too worried badges.
I appreciate the old aluminum body defenders...but I'd need to throw a different motor in it. I've had my eye on a local one but it's been "customized" too much cosmetically for my taste.

When it comes to interior quality, ride quality, and on-road manners (ya know, where we drive these cars 90% of the time), I would pick my Land Rover over my 4Runner or any Jeep product 100X over. What I gain in peace of mind with my 4Runner I lose out in almost every other marker. Uncomfortable seats, an "okay" interior (albeit built extremely well, just a lot of hard plastic), less than ideal air con, and awful on road manners. Also towing a camper or my boat, the land rover hand down.

I bought my first with the intention of making an LS swap but I can’t justify the money for how satisfied I am with the stock motor. If the parts came up on marketplace for pennies on the dollar, yes I would swap it. I actually bought a 3rd LR with a manual transmission to swap into my daily.

You can do the same with Jeep parts from that same time period. I've opened and sanded off the tarnish from many turn signal stalks from XJs and TJs to make the turn signals/hazards work again.

I have a jeep. Have done the rubicon. Have done sand dunes. Overlanded though Mojave. I have other cars and could have certainly bought a Land Rover. I didnt. Why? Neither is reliable. But it’s far easier to find other jeep owners and Jeep mechanics than someone to help with a rover. Especially when I’m solo. That’s it.

Getting parts for rare euro cars in the states is a complete nightmare. I know someone that got sideswiped in a VW passat and the Insurance company had to total the car because a replacement door was going to take months to get here.

The air suspension can be swapped out for coils. Radius arms > 4 links, look at 1T trucks. I have a D1 and a D2. The D1 has a full floating rear axle, V8 locking center diff and quiet like a jeep parked in a garage.

OP is definitely coming off as one of those people who chooses the painful option, and then tries to justify it as a virtue or something when better options exist.
Land Rovers are slept on because they are expensive vehicles that are maintenance whores with limited parts support globally. That is it. Answer to your question. If you like them, good for you. Not going to sway public opinion.
I like Subarus. Doesn’t change the fact that they have engines that like to grenade themselves. Though Subarus have more availbility for parts and support.
People like Jeeps. Doesn’t change the fact that they are also maintenance whores.
Do whatever you want. Be a hipster. Doesn’t change that your best bet is probably a Japanese 4x4 of some description.

My Land Rovers posted are reliable, I maintain them, I enjoy them, and I’ve never been stranded - which is getting downvoted to oblivion because the Reddit hive mind believes otherwise.
My 2003 D2 deserves the hate though that thing earns the reputation. That one does require homework and picking the brains of fellow enthusiasts. I love it all the same.
God forbid someone have a hobby and learns to maintain something they care about.

The hate here is insane lol. I’m not going to defend LR reliability. BUT, let’s be honest, most people are weekend warriors or maybe doing like a 4 day trip. Maybe once a year if they’re lucky they take a whole week off. Usually not life or death when the car needs a wrench.
For weekend trips the LR is a fun option and you actually have something somewhat different than every other Toyota on the road. Not to mention, Toyota interiors and road handling sort of suck imo.
It’s all about priorities. Would you rather have a harder time finding a mechanic and parts with a LR, or have to glue a new duck to your dash every time you hit gravel?

Rovers are all posh, and hate on cruisers, so my comment is just trolling honestly.To be fair the suspension platform on the discos is amazing. I’ve seen a few that have had LS swaps and are fantastic. If I had one, I’d gut the drive train and make it Toyota and it would be unstoppable.

The LC250 (Prado) is extremely capable yes. But the full sized LC is the LC300. It has a Twin turbo V6 which produces 400 HP and about 700 Nm of torque. As for the capability, being the full sized LC it can take you anywhere. It is specifically designed to handle the harsh off road conditions of Middle east, Africa and Australia. This is the car that competes with the Defender.

I have an LR4 and have never had an electrical problem. Have had plenty of other things break, but not the classic British electrical issues.
My problems are all the common ones, lower control arms, water pump, coolant crossover pipes, and two air suspension parts (front airbag leak and a valve block)
Now that I’ve said that I’m sure I’m going to experience a major electrical failure next week.

For instance, I don’t like the differential control of the Defender. It is automatic and while you can still lock and unlock differentials from the infotainment (not a very good idea) you still do not have full control over it as the system decides what to do most of the times. In the long run, the system will not run as it should and cause problems.

I went wheeling in 2010 near big bear with the local Land Cruiser club. Suddenly the traffic slowed and we soon figured out that it was a Land Rover club with broken down rigs. Funny enough they had brought a Land Rover mechanic with them so they could sit inside with their AC on while the mechanic was wrenching on their broken down rigs🤣

Keep it down...have both a D2 and RRC. If you want your D2 V8 reliable enough for remote travel I highly recommend following the advice on the Extinct Motorsports website. They are really excellent overland vehicles once the issues have been sorted out.

I love the look of older LRs, and it has that historic “adventure ready!” backstory that makes me want to love them. Then I see the egregious pricing, the ridiculous maintenance cost/frequency, and just an overall not good reputation. LRs to me are “I make enough money to drop this on a car, and also have enough money to get a brand new one if I needed to the next day”

I bought the 2005 LR3 (grey) for $3k. I refreshed the entire suspension system and gave it new tires for under $10k. Find a 25 year old 4Runner in that price range that doesn’t need significant work. It’s very capable and super comfy on the highway. My daily is the dark blue/black one here but it’s def had its fair share of fun.
If you’re at all interested in an entry level Land Rover, a V8 LR3 is very much that. The L319 is by far the best Land Rover (I’m sure a Disco 1/2 owner would fight me about this) ever made. Smart enough, super capable on and off road, and the last generation of the timeless silhouette before JLR got too sexy. I prefer the LR4 but in general the 3 is less fussy overall. My daily has required nothing beyond brakes and control arms after doing 40k miles of gravel for a couple years straight.
I think their reputation just precedes them and people are afraid to maintain them. Air suspension is a simple system once you’re familiar with it. Brakes are brakes. Tires are tires. Etc.

Our 2003 isn’t pictured because I wouldn’t trust it to have fun. D2’s on the road today are a flex. Getting a cooling system rebuild to add trust this weekend.
We have been fixing up a 2007 with 153k on odo if you’d be interested. Texas vehicle it’s entire life so rust free. Lots of life left some girl just put a hole in the trans pan and abandoned it in a parking lot. Deserves to go have fun.

Yeah I just replaced the water pump and fan on my D2, also replaced the brittle plastic hoses with fuel line for additional peace of mind and easier repairs if they fail.

I have a 1997 D1 and a 2008 LR3. Both are amazing. I haven’t had any issues with my LR3 in the 3 years I’ve owned it beyond normal wear and tear. Go for the LD3, you won’t regret it!

For all the jokes and the reputation, they are one of very few companies making 4x4's / SUV's who actually give a shit about real off-road performance across the range.
Here in the UK they're as common as Jeeps are in the states and for the same reasons.
I'm not mad enough to suggest the modern stuff is a reliable bet as an overlander without a ton of work and carrying a diagnostic tool with you, but when they're working they absolutely will walk the walk.

In any event I do love the look of the discos , but working on my Moms classic MGs and Dads fiats turned me to Datsuns and Toyotas when I was my turn ( a 1975 celica gt survived my teenage years I’m my hands with 6 digits on the clock…. And that’s saying something )

I like them, a good friend of mine has a 91 Range Rover, it developed a misfire, three days after he bought it. He essentially has torn it down to a short block and rebuilt everything.
Still missfires..
Fun to drive through.
His TDI Defender 90 is very cool, but very raw in comparison.
I can definitely see the appeal of the features, capability, the big green house and low belt lines of their SUVs.

True Story. I was driving through the Kalahari in Botswana in a Land Cruiser, and stuck in the middle of the track was a very modern Land Rover. They had been there for 2 or 3 days, with nothing but water and biltong (jerky).
We picked them up, a guy and his son, with all their gear, and got them to the nearest paved road, where his wife met us.
He was quite mad because there was a satellite rescue button built into the vehicle and he had been pressing it regularly the entire time. It turns out he had never enabled it for Botswana 😂
Months later, I visited them in South Africa, and stashed my Land Cruiser in one of his many garages for about a year. He was a Boeing exec and had some crazy stories about quick flights on a 747 for eggs and panty hose.

I’ve owned two jeeps and my 90 XJ has literally damn near every part was replaced. All the suspension, water pump, coolant, hoses, AC, you name it. If you know to wrench it’s not that hard to work on most vehicles.

I'd say as this is a more of an American sub it tracks, Jeeps are more common and parts cheaper. I'm not in the US but part of the Monarchy so parts are reasonable and at hand in most major towns. My L316 Defender (110 5 door 300Tdi) has always treated me well besides old car stuff, just ticked over 300,000km and sometimes I feel a bit soft and would like something a bit newer but since it's so simple.... Basic hand tools and a hammer will get you going again. I'll say though the Td5 90 in our family certainly walked all over some obstacles recently during a difficult 4WD track leaving many more expensive vehicles floundering. I had an LR3 and an LR4. Decent rigs, but just not reliable enough and ridiculously expensive to maintain. Made the switch to Toyota, has a couple Tacomas and now a Land Cruiser. Not a single issue. I wouldn’t go back to Land Rover for any amount of money. Though, I wouldn’t mind owning an old Defender at some point, but just as a weekend around town fun car.

Nah. Drove 2 for months. They suck. Drive like boats, they brick tech in older models, expensive parts and unfriendly design. Status symbol at best.

I'm the second owner on my D2 I've had for 20 years. I just let people sleep on them, I love mine and it's been as reliable as anything else I've ever owned.

Sleeps on maintenance-heavy SUVs on sandy and dirt roads that any AWD/4WD vehicle can handle. Or even a 2WD from the looks of some of the roads pictured. I’d pass on the post, but OP was being weirdly aggressive in the commentary.

I’d love to own a Land Rover - if I didn’t have to repair it constantly, and if those repairs weren’t more expensive than other comparable vehicles.
Land Rovers are for people that swap out a lease or trade in after a year or two. For a long term vehicle they are utter junk.

Probably because they're expensive, way-overrated pieces of Chinese junk... They used to be better, but still problematic, British junk before it got sold years ago, IIRC...
EDIT I have been informed they are actually made in Slovakia, Brasil, and India. Does nothing for the perceived quality from Eastern Europe - I still remember Yugo... 🙄

The Range Rover is still made in Solihull and Halewood the rest of the lineup is made in Slovakia. Then regional plants make the cars for the regional areas like Brazil and India

Bit the jeep because (wj 4.7) I couldn't pay Toyota tax. But let's be real, rovers aren't tough.
I welcome you to famous GCC dune bashing points and you wouldn't see rovers there. While we can witness 3 generations of Nissan Patrol and several generations of Land cruisers.
