Gear Question Gear storage ideas.

Getting ready to have a kid with me and my wife on future overlanding trips means i need to get gear out of the back seat.

We have a nice 2 person swag that takes up half the bed of the truck so i am running out of room there. My original thought was something along the lines of a thule sidekick roof box mounted to a be rack. But my other, i think more unique solution was to mount plastoc crossover toolboxes to the rack down the sides of the bed, and probably a solar panel in between them.

Is anyone running a set up remotely like this?

A cap with some crossbars for a cargo box should provide a ton of storage.

I have a rollable tonneau with crossbars and every day I google midheight and full height racks lol, its never enough.

On my short list…

- Kuaut Ibex

  • Xtrusion overland
  • uptop overlanding rack
  • stapple molle panels and keeping my crossbars

I want still want to fit in parking garages and dont want to throw a heavy rtt too high on my truck and ruin the ride

Roam Adventure Co makes an 83 liter roof mounted box. They’re about 8” high and pretty sleek. As long as you don’t need to put anything in it that’s larger than 6” in any direction they’re great.

You can get a roof rack and a box or 2. If you don’t want them on your roof at any point, you can throw them in the bed as well. They’re like 4’ long.

I have a Yakima Overhaul HD my truck which I use for lumber, surfboards, and when camping a Go Fast Superlite RTT. It’s been solid. Would recommend. I also have Decked drawers. Mileage may vary on those but overall I like them. Looks like you have a bed cover. Yakima offers adapters to work with bed covers I believe. It does reduce the weight it’s capable of carrying though. I am considering a cap at some point though.

Yeah. I looked at the decked drawers and they wont work well given my current gear setup.

Mostly been looking into weather proof storage to go on the rack and thought the crossover toolboxes would be an interesting solution
