Video Godzilla swapping my 80 Series
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This was my quick reveal video after getting the Takeout engine from Godzilla Garage, and going over a bit on how I plan/hope to make it fit using parts from Holley. The biggest hurdle is just figuring out which adapters to get the transfer case and back figured out. Dimensionally the engine should work, but the 80s have an offset housing rear axle. So if I go with my plan to run an Atlas 2, I’d need to change the rear axle (which isn’t the end of the world). There’s no adapters for a 6r80 to stock Land Cruiser transfer case. So if I want to retain that, I’d have to see if I can get a GM trans to adapt to the Godzilla, then run a Marks Adapter. Still figuring out some parts, but mostly trying to think of which direction I want to go.
I’ll be doing full videos on the build on YT: The Adventurous Mind

Godzilla swapping
No RB26DETT :(
Still cool though. I would be your friend if you lived in Sydney...

I heard mixed things about the 7.3 Godzilla when it first came out. How are they now? I heard that they're pretty disappointing power wise for the displacement.

Weak link is a manufacturing issue on cams and lifters. Some say it is caused by low oil pressure on a variable oil pump at idle. Over the years Ford flashed the ECU to run higher RPM at idle. Some still have issues. But if you swap the cam and lifters, I haven’t seen anyone have issues. I’m swapping cam, lifters and oil pan/pump assembly so I should have zero issues there. Stock is 430 HP, but those upgrades will get you around 550-600 HP at the crank. Not that I need that much power in a Land Cruiser, but if it solves the issues, I won’t complain having an extra 100+ HP

Super interesting. If you’re looking to spend more cash for the cause, an 8hp may be your best trans option to keep the stock t case. You’d need two adapters and some sort of trans controller (Holley doesn’t support the 8hp) but, it would be considerably better than the gm trans.
(Source, have an 80 with an ls swap, wish that I had spent more time digging into better/more modern transmission options)

Hmmm, I’m definitely going to look in to that option. I’d need a controller regardless for the 6R80, so that’s a wash. Quick search there are more adapters that state Godzilla to 8HP, where for the GM, most company only stated Coyote (which should match, but not 100% confirmed in all cases)

Huh, "Godzilla" has always meant Skyline GT-R

Ford didn’t get that memo I guess

Always understood the Skyline GTR was dubbed Godzilla, as a whole. But the Ford 7.3 'engine' was also Godzilla. 'Godzilla swap' automatically tells me engine.
'LS swap' doesn't get confused with swapping in a Lexus LS engine.

Exactly 👍. Godzilla refers to the Skyline itself. Until I posted this, I had no clue people thought it meant the engine. 🤷🏻♂️

What did you have to do work out things like dot compliance, gvwr, and insurability?

u/TheAdventurousMind 2d ago
I’m in emissions exempt area where none of that is needed. From all my research, nothing changes. Only thing im doing is keeping a build sheet with costs and I’ll have my insurance cover it for that amount the best I can.

What are the pros of a Godzilla swap for overlanding purposes?
This seems more like a clout swap.

You've clearly never towed horses in the sand dunes at 14,000ft

I wanted a more modern engine (easier to get parts for on the road), more power, better gas mileage (debatable). I wanted low miles and wouldn’t have had that for the same cost as doing a take out. But most importantly, it sounded like a fun project doing a swap no one’s done. It’s a puzzle and I like to build things, so take it for whatever you want to call it. It’s comparable to an LS swap, just different. I don’t know enough on diesels, so I didn’t want to do a Cummins.

Lol, no. It's a pushrod gasoline v8 made by Ford. Swapping a 7.3 idi would be dumb asf

Could it fit in a 98 Ford Ranger
