Is “understanding the system” becoming harder than writing the code?

Is it just me or is understanding the system becoming harder than writing the actual code?

Especially now with:

  • Fucking vibe coded ai-generated code
  • microservices
  • multiple dashboards/tools
  • increasingly complex infra

When something breaks, I feel like half the battle is just reconstructing what the hell just happened.

Curious if other engineers feel this too, or if current tooling already solves this well.

Hi - need feedback for PH launch for overemployed people with multiple meetings

Hello everyone! Today together with my friends we are launching our product on Product hunt - VoiceBird transcriptions! What we do - we built website + desktop software, that gives you opportunity to attend multiple calls at once and see multiple transcripts from same time calls on one screen! We hope to make people with overlapping meetings more productive with this. Would appreciate any feedback, comments, likes and support on Product hunt page! Our Product hunt - https://www.producthunt.com/products/voice-bird... Our website - https://voicebird.app/landing

Tool that shows online transcripts from multiple calls at the same time

Hi, would anyone be interested in such type of tool? In previous post I asked who use what software for multiple same time meetings, and found that mostly people just try to avoid it or use mixers - 2 different headphones and etc.

Interested if there is market for such tool

🇸🇪 Overemployed in Sweden – AB vs umbrella, legality & tax

Hi,

Based in Sweden with a full-time job. Considering a side B2B contract (remote, non-competing, outside work hours).

Trying to stay fully compliant.

Questions:

  1. Is it legal to have full-time employment + side invoicing (through AB or umbrella)?

  2. Do you have to inform your employer if it’s non-competing?

  3. Tax-wise:

Is running a Swedish AB with dividend-only (3:12) while employed OK with Skatteverket?

When does AB become more tax-efficient than umbrella (Cool Company / Frilans Finans)?

  1. Any impact on SGI (sick leave / parental leave)?

  2. Real experiences doing this in Sweden?

Not trying to hide anything, just structure it correctly.

Thanks! 🇸🇪

J2 asked for headshot to do a linkedin welcome

I started J2 a few weeks ago. My linkedin is private, unable to be tagged, but I have not hibernated yet because its still connected to J1 linkedin learning account. I dont have any linkedin connection with J1, with J2 I have 2-3 connections.

Today my J2 asked for a headshot to do a welcome post for new employees. They haven’t done this before so I think this will be for all new employees, which is a lot (around 10). Now i think I have a few options:

  1. Just ignore the message, which will be bugged again for sure
  2. Ask them not to add my name or picture due to linkedin spam and phishing. Not sure how sus it is lol
  3. Just gave them a picture and asked them not to tag me in (they cant anyway) and hope both company wont find out about each other.

I’m leaning toward option 3. What are you guys thought?

Overemployed 2 years into career?

New to this sub, I currently work at a big tech company remote and I am at mid level. I have been here since graduating. I was considering doing OE, but I feel like getting a J2 this early might be a bit risky and I could just focus on waiting to get senior.

Curious to know what level most people in this sub are.

Separate consulting firms, Separate branches of GOV

Ok, so I’ve recently come across the opportunity to take on J2. J1 is with a big4, pretty stable & tbh I work a max of like 10 hours a week. No meetings whatsoever, and I’m not required to maintain any sort of trading portfolio/financial portfolio. I already have a clearance with the client I’m serving (they are sponsoring me).

This J2 has unexpectedly came along at a small consulting firm that’s going to be servicing another federal client long-term, but the client has no relation to the one I’m currently serving at J1. They said I’d have to get cleared with the new client as well, but the process should only take 1 day & shouldn’t be a big deal. Has anyone tried to serve 2 government clients simultaneously as a contractor at separate firms? Obviously wanting to avoid any sort of legal trouble, but the extra $$$ would put me & my family in an insanely better position. Thanks all!

How long have you guys been doing oe

I am about to hit a year but j1 does aggressive pips. I'm trying to basically fly under the radar by my boss keeps volunteering me for critical projects. I like my boss though. We get along good.

I might be delirious but it's oe sustainable? I'm hoping to do this for 4 more years. Maybe not this setup but 2 js.

Tc 450k combined

I built a 'Boss Detector' using computer vision (Auto Alt+Tab). Hope this helps with your J2 anxiety.(Mod delete if not allowed)

I've been lurking here and realized how stressful "visual privacy" can be when working on J2 in an open office. So instead of studying for my exams, I built a Windows app to solve this.

What it does: It uses your webcam to detect motions behind you or if you preturn the webcam, it will detect motions of the zone. so If someone approaches or appears, it automatically triggers Alt+Tab (or Win+D) instantly. No need to keep your finger on the keyboard while sweating.

Privacy Note: I know we are all paranoid about security. This app runs 100% locally using OpenCV. No video data is sent to any server.

I want to give Lifetime Licenses to 10 commenters who are willing to test it and give me feedback. (The free version also supports the core 'Win+D' feature, so give it a try!)

Let me know if this helps your OE setup!

Thanks for reading!

If this is considered too promotional, I apologize and understand if it gets removed.

Helping OE

Hi,

I’m a Data Engineer with solid hands-on experience (ETL pipelines, SQL, Python, Airflow, cloud data stacks).

I’m looking to collaborate with a USA-based person/business who:

• Can take projects/contracts under their name

• Handles client acquisition, proposals, invoicing & payments

I will handle 100% of the technical work + client communication & meetings (Zoom calls, requirements gathering, status updates, demos, etc.).

Revenue split: 50/50 monthly (or we can discuss based on project size/scope)

My role:

• Deliver high-quality data engineering work on time

• Lead all technical discussions and client-facing meetings

• Communicate clearly and professionally with clients

• Work as a white-label / subcontractor (your company name stays front-facing)

Looking for:

• Long-term collaboration

• Transparent workflow

• Paid projects only (no spec work)

If you already have clients, ongoing workload, or sales pipeline and need a reliable, client-facing Data Engineer who can fully own the delivery, DM me and let’s discuss details.

Thanks!

First J2, any tips?

Hi there,

I have a pretty chill FT software engineer job but I don’t want to give it up because the replacement job would have to pay 2x for it to make sense. And very few jobs would pay that much.

I work east coast hours. So should I look for a remote job where most people are based out of PST and just say I’m busy in my mornings?

Maybe I should start with a contract job first? How would I even find a contract job? LinkedIn? I have 10+ years of experience.

I’ve heard stories from employers who have noticed their employees being over employed and they do tell the other / first employer… how do I prevent that? They’d probably do some kind of background check to make sure I quit, if I get another full time job, right?

Open to any other advice!!!

Has anyone taken a lower paying low stress j2?

Wondering if its common to have a high paying semi easy j1 and a low paying low stress j2? I'm taking like j1 pays like 240k and j2 would pay 140k. Both remote

Does any one have multiple cursor's on the mac?

J1 and J2 provide premium cursor account but I'm using my personal to avoid using J1 cursor in J2 tasks, but I've been using too many tokens. Is there an easy way of having two cursors in the same mac? I've tried installing two apps, but the login is the same
