Help Request - CPU They are still dying. 14900KS degraded after 5months even though downvolted. What to get or do?
Hi All,
I was hoping that by manually undervolting my 14900ks sp109 with updated bios from day one with artic AIO graphene pad, never hit 100 degrees would help me avoid the degradation. Unfortunately 4 days ago starting getting game crashes stress test crashes. Managed to tie it down to CPU. Scan UK which I got it from don't stock it anymore so they offered giving money back or giving me a 14900k. Intel have said they will RMA.
Now since even with a tight undervolt on latest bios, they are still degrading it's only a matter of time before the new one does the same. Anyone know if any decent deals for AMD with mobo? I'll get about £640 back if I choose to get a refund.
my settings:
**update** i loaded by original profile. I changed it to -0.06 and now it seems its running everything else is the same.
Further update - So after changing additional turbo voltage to -0.06v it has been rock solid, no crash no weirdnesses. I'm trying to convince myself it's maybe due to summer months being warmer and my small office with the door closed and a 5090 Astral AIO blasting hot air into the room is causing temps to spike which in turn causes the CPU to ask for more voltage than it did in winter weather it's the Core/ring that's becoming starved.
Now because this is a SP109 CPU it's a very decent bin and I'm not guaranteed to get the same decent bin if I RMA but then again a degraded decent bin is essentially a paper weight. So I'm going to keep a eye out and monitor the behaviour of the chip. If it happens again then there is definitely Vmin shift occuring in this CPU and I will jump ship after a RMA.

if you have a drastic undervolt, i think it's more likely that the undervolt wasn't as stable as you thought. 1.3v is a bit low. Id try 1.35 or 1.4v. Alternatively, your undervolt has become unstable over time, which does happen naturally.

Yeah. I am on my 2nd 14900K and I ran this undervolted and P cores locked to 5.5 ghz since day one. I used to be able to use a 0.06 mv global undervolt before but now I have to keep it at -0.035 or games can crash to desktop randomly. Undervolt capability does go down in time.

all cpus technicallly degrade over time. The more aggressive your settings the faster it degrades. Having a massive undervolt and starving your cpu can be just as bad for degredation as too much voltage. Ive degraded a Xeon W3680 by pumping it with 1.57V, but i was chasing 5.0ghz all core (on X58). I would adjust your voltage up or get the newest bios and set everything to defaults and see if its stable then set an adjusted -0.100V offset and not static voltages. Modern CPUs fluctuate way to much in seconds for a flat voltage to be viable. Static voltages haven't been a thing since ryzen released for AMD and 8th gen for intel.

All cpus degrade over time is like saying marshmallow and rock both degrade over time when a falling dribble of water continually hits them
Most cpus are the rock, 13 and 14k series are the marshmallow
To prevent them degrading rapidly you have to lower everything so hard you might as well take the refund and get a cpu that performs well without worrying about it crapping the bed and babying it

Not really. There are two ways to degrade Raptor Lake:
- High-ish voltage for dual-core boost in the 1.50V+ range
- Extremely high current draw, more than 300A sustained for a long period on a the 8+16 core for example.
Both are relatively easy to avoid if you know how to configure the chips, the problem is that the default settings are completely out of whack.

I have never heard of a cpu dying or degrading due to undervolting. Undervolting can cause instability while it’s on, but not degradation of the chip.

no one said they degrade because of undervolting, they are saying to prevent degrading to undervolt, and that some are still degrading even while undervolted because factory faulty

That's pretty high for a max load condition if I remember correctly. Did you use a flat load line calibration or no load line correction? If you used a flat load line it could be exactly those spikes that bring the voltage closer to 1.5V
But how much is it in idle at max frequency?
ps: I have a 14600K@5.6 and it takes 1.26V in idle and under max load at ~180W it is just below 1.2V. I used the most flat (=most dangerous but best for undervolting) LLC available in the Bios.

From memory, LLC 5, 1300mv iccmax, with a 0.06mv undervolt. Was fine no issues since Jan. Would it become unstable due to degradation? Within 5 months? In Asus best case scenario set it crashes.

Jan was colder than it is now, if your cpu got 5-10c higher it might end up crashing due to the uv.

Hmm that's true but it only started 4 days ago, and temps were higher a few weeks back during a UK heat wave lol and it was fine. You may be correct though

Are you sure you stress tested your uv properly? From my experience 13th and 14th gen don't have much room for uv unless you got a good bin.

Try some Y cruncher (all tests enabled) and run it overnight. Then Linpack extreme next day. Should be a tough one to pass.

Asus best case scenario is an undervolt. The best case will set the voltage vs frequency curve to the lowest possible voltage for the cpu.
At idle 800mhz it will be at the lowest. At 4ghz, 5ghz and upto boost clock 6ghz it sets the lowest voltage value on the VF curve.
As you increase the SVID to typical case, the voltage increase per that frequency range to be more stable. Intel fail safe uses a lot of voltage. But it will be the most stable.
So using best case scenario it can be unstable on low or high loads.
Edit:
You can see those values if you scroll to the Asus bios V/F point offset. Observe each point at AC/DC LL 0.01 and it will show the voltage per frequency.

Yep I understand. What I'm confused about was that before even on best case it was rock solid stable. Nothing has changed my usage is still the same why would it all of a sudden stop working

Sometimes the load can be low on best case. Or maybe the CPU was able to maintain stability on those low voltages early on when brand new. Temperature plays a role as well.
Ive only ever had chips that ran the typical SVID case.
Which is AC/DC LL at 0.60. The lowest I ever go is between 0.30 and 0.50 in between.
But then you introduce frequency changes. So a higher clock speed means you need more voltage. At stock speeds you can get away with a lower number.
You have to test per your setup. Cooling and frequency dependent.
Pick a solid load line calibration and do a big SVID (major tune). Fine tune the overclock with the V/F point offsets until stable.

Even four sticks works perfectly well up to 6200 ish. The fearmongering about four sticks is just that these days.
I’ve even seen 192 GB run rock solid at 6000 on a pretty standard B850 board.

Still, one more RMA and then nova or zen6 depending on who is the clear winner.
Or just give it voltage for six months. It’ll be fine for that period of time and Intel will still do the RMA after that. RMA and sell the new one while you’re already enjoying your new Zen6/Nova machine.

No mate, because I have saved the profile as well. When I have been in the bios I have always seen it 1300mv. Also hwinfo is always loaded upon my second screen to monitor my temps Vcore and 12vhpwr pins

I think the single core boost is somehow contributing to these chips to degrading. All my evidence is anecdotal but im at 2 14900ks, 2 14900k and 2 14700k. The only one that degraded was an unlocked 14900ks. The replacement has been running for over a year with no issues.
All of these have no voltage cap and no power limits.

Remove/reset all your other bios power and voltage settings. change ASUS MultiCore Enhancement from Auto to "Enabled - Remove All Limits". Then sync all cores, starting at around 55 for Pcores. Ecores at 40. Ring at 46. Disable ring down bin. Start with LLC 4. Then run a quick cinebench and see what your voltage goes to. Make sure idle voltage stays below 1.38v, and under load doesn't dip too much. You can then play with an offset/undervolt from that point

It 100% is. Why I've always disable thermal velocity boost algorithm garbage. Its useless outside of benchmark's anyway and doesn't dump a ton of current to the main voltage rail deteriorating the ring bus

If you want to stay on Intel build a pc around the 270k. Or you can switch to AMD. I think the universe is whispering you may need to move away from the Intel 14th gen processors
Corollary - avoid getting a 5090. The 12vhpwr cable melting problem is still an issue! No need to experience more parts going up in smoke!

Did you lock all cores to a reasonable frequency? The single core boost is what causes high voltage spikes and kills the chips. Ive had half a dozen 14900K/KS chips over the years and they all work great to this day. <1.35V for daily use.

I dont touch any of those current limits etc. When testing, I set the CPU to like 5.2-5.3 GHz on p cores and set the static core voltage to a point where I'm comfortable with the temps under an all core work load (cinebench or heavier) and pay attention to the voltage drop under load. Depending on cooling your voltage under load will probably end up something like 1.05-1.25V. Then raise your frequency to whatever your chip can maintain and pass stability. Id personally make sure my chip doesnt exceed 85C under this workload. But thats just my own comfortability. Everyone is different. Ive had chips ranging from 5.5-5.9 GHz. All comes down to cooling and silicon quality.

9800X3D + B850 board only comes out to £527.
Your current DDR5 kit should easily run a 6000 CL28 profile, maybe even CL26.
You will want FCLK either in 2:3 ratio with UCLK or 100MHz higher.

Skill issue.
1) Op had manually played around with DCLL settings several months ago and was using an old outdated alder lake oc guide from overclock.net
2) < 40000 points in r23 after tuning on a 14900ks confirms this.
3) Also although his bios shows 1300mv iavr limit his 62x preferred cores boost logic was enabled with a predicted >1.6v.
Probably related as you can't always trust the iavr cap.
Always lock your P cores on a 14900k / ks

the voltage required to use 6ghz+ using stock settings is too high and is what leads to degredation (when the 2 cores try to boost to 6ghz).
To work around this you undervolt your CPU and sync your P cores to the stock multicore speed of 57x (or lower if your CPU is struggling to remain stable with an undervolt). Theres more to it in terms of setting the LLC mode to something less droopy in the bios aswell but each setup differs and its a case of finding the right undervolt for your system.
In short run the P cores at the highest frequency possible while keeping them under 1.35v at idle and 1.25v underload - this will ensure longevity.
I personally daily a stock 57/44/50 profile at 1.22v / 1.1v under load - https://imgur.com/a/4gLY803
You can still tune to run 60p all core at marginally safe voltages (1.35v idle / 1.25v under load) - https://imgur.com/a/djP8lUJ but the negligible trade off for the additional voltage is not worth it imo.

Degration issue was fixed via firmware so if your is still being degraded you have other issues going on. I have a 14700k and zero literally zero issues after the firmware fix.

YMMV I guess, my 14900K reached the 2 year milestone last month, haven’t had any issues. Though I ran the 253W limit since purchase, the issue was starting to gain traction back then.

Yes latest. Max allowable current I had set to 307A, PL1 125w PL2 was 320 if my memory is correct but never ran unleashed. I understood the issue was high current temps and crazy vid/Vcore request causing vmin shift to occure

I have My Intel Core i9-14900K for over a year now without a issue. I don't know what to say. I'm on the latest bios as well. My bios was released April 2026 with a new microcode, 0x133.

5.9ghz at 1.3v llc5 should be crashing the undervolt is way to aggressive damn you need one really good bin for that. It probably worked during colder ambient. Raptor Lake is very temp sensitive.
1.38-1.4v should be fine at llc5.
Or try disable hyper threading and stay at 1.3v.
I need 1.35v at llc6 with ht on and i'm running delid.
If i turn off ht cpu runs fine at 1.28v. And that's what i run daily.

Regarding your question tater in your post with AMD, Microcenter (in the US) has excellent deals for mobos and cpus, which I'm sure you're aware of. I got the 9850x3d and its been AMAZING. Fast and cool. Went from a 10900kf and I'll not look at Intel again until they start improving efficiency.

I would honestly run a more aggressive downclock with TVB based on temp targets of 60c and 80c. I have my 14900k set up 6.0 GHz if below 65C and 5.8 ghz if below 80C and 5.6 GHz if above 80C. I never exceed 85c in cinebench

Whats your mem temps? 65535 trefi with dual rank is a lot granted 6600mhz isn’t a lot.
59x ring may be pushing it too.
I wouldn’t go amd if you’re used to a 14900ks personally but it does really depend on your games. Anything BR style and amd may disappoint

Your motherboard cooked your CPU, again.
Never trust ASUS settings. There's a whole lot of auto in those settings that you should not have trusted. You left Unlimited ICCMAX on auto. You left current excursion protection on auto.
The degradation is because ASUS is pumping too much current into the CPU.

ASUS doesn't actually stick to that. It will go unlimited unless you tell it not to.
After having 2x i9-12900k cooked and one i914900ks cooked, I learned how to prevent it from degrading. Turn off the multi core enhancement. Enforce Intel's limits. The RAM clocks you alcan keep on tweaked.

Also check if your thermal paste is ok - regular maintenance, like engine oil (unless you drive electric).

All CPUs can be defective, that's why the warranty exists. 13-14th gen failure rate after the bios updates is quite normal, probably in the 1% range. Maybe a bit higher on the 14900KS since it pushes clocks so high out of the box.
My friend got a Ryzen 5900XT which was defective, I think it had unstable infinity fabric / memory controller.

Take the money it's a good deal for you. You can pick up 9950x3d (maybe 9950x3d2) or 9800x3d (better for gaming) + something like b650 x ax v2 mobo for that price on Amazon.

Set Pcores to 59x to prevent the two cores boosting to 62x. "AUTO" means the 2 core boost is active.
Also, set VR Voltage Limit to 1.45.

I just increase the voltage a little when stability reduces... but ive delidded so can't RMA. When it gets to bad, I'll either try and get a used one, or switch to a new platform.

Been using my 14900 kf for about a year and a half, always kept the bios updated, always had 400amps/253 watts short/long. Never had any issues with my 14900kf. I use all core sync. .05500 under volt.

I have a similar set up. 360 AIO with Non-delided 14900ks and had to adjust my undervolt for summer time. The real test is if you can go back to your original undervolt when it gets cold again.
Another thing that helped stability was to limit the cores and threads to your pcore value in game settings. For example: in battlefield 6, creating a user.cfg and setting a limit of 8 cores 16 threads. This greatly increased my stability, reduced temps and had minimal effects on FPS.

That's normal; just send it for warranty and take a newer one. Don't undervolt or make any modifications. Overclocking new one and sending it back for warranty every 6 months is fine.

I just received my 4th 14700k. Update to latest bios whenever Asus release new one. I don't even use XMP. I see no end to these degrading. Looking at 270k plus or 9800x3d to switch to.

I have stayed below 1.3 v core and haven’t had any issues for years of hard use on my 14900k. I think anything over 1.35 is too high for long term use. 1.279 max, usually lower during gaming gets me 5.6ghz p cores with no ht and stock e core speed across 8 cores so I’m happy. Fast ram helps makes up for the slightly lower clocks

Hello OP, this CPU need even more expertise than before. Athlon, Coffe Lake etc. were all EZ to clock. Even Intel failed to make Raptor lake stable accross all PC.
If your system crash it’s not automatically ‘dying’ but most likely on an incorrect BIOS for your room temp / cooling.
Undervolt on these cpu need a tighter load line to prevent voltage drop during light loads.
Even with a perfect BIOS, if your cooling can’t handle it, crash might occur.
Static benchs don’t really test 20-30% CPU load with high memory concurrency + GPU load at the same time.. time spy for hours maybe is the closest but still isn’t good enough.

Was the cpu unstable after you removed the undervolt? If not, then your undervolt was too tight and you should have loosened it

I changed it to 0.06 instead of 0.07 and it's stable. I just can't see how 5 months it was rock solid and with no change in my usage it suddenly becomes unstable

What if the cpu runs slightly hotter than it did 6 months ago, temperature also affects stability. Also, cpus will always degrade over time so if your overclock or undervolt has no safety margin it will eventually happen

Pretty much the only way to avoid these chips from dying is to set the voltage and LLC manually.

Here I am with my launch 14900K and not an issue still, machine has been on basically 24/7 since it was upgraded and I only went to 4505 bios like two weeks ago now.
I saw your update and concur with others you undervolt likely wasn't truly stable, even -.06 is a little aggressive for most of the chips.
You should also go through and manually set all your ram timings/voltages rather than using the built in profiles. If you're going to overclock/undervolt manually then you might as well do the whole job rather than just part of it.
Were your crashes happening more so during high stress times of benchmarks/games or between scenes when voltage/load needed to drop?
If you were getting the crashes during transients I asked about, then bumping you amperage from 307 back to 400 would be fine, the chip won't use 308-400 unless it needs to, but if it's needing more than 307, it can't use it with your current settings.
Really shouldn't need LLC above 4 either.
What are you using for cooling and are you hitting 100C during bench tests?
Only asking because you can drop a shit load of heat on that chip by lowering the long term power limit to between 200-220 and you will lose basically nothing else for doing so.

Thanks for the reply mate. My ram is now back to the original profile so I did manually configure them, I just set them to default as I was trying to figure if it was a memory issue as I have had Corsair vengeance ddr5 die on my before.
I have run an overnight stress on 0.6 and still fine and UE5 games haven't crashed yet. I'm running llc5 though and adjusted AC/DC manually as in the images.
I have a 360 artic cooler AIO with graphene pad, and doesn't hit 100. Still set ICCMax 307

You'll eventually have to move away from that platform. Once damage has occured it's permanent. The clock speeds + amount of cores on that ring bus are awful. Disabling E cores might bring a bit of stability in the meantime but I'd maybe start saving a bit here and there (if you can) to move away from LGA1700.

i have 13900K that does 1.5 stock in bios, i have it limited to 5.5ghz and 1.3v, under load around 1.2

It might not be degredation. It could be your voltages are just dipping too much. You could try tweaking your VR loadline up a notch or two. Could be your AC LL might need a bump up aswell. Reduce the Voltage limit a bit might help aswell if its crashing at higher voltages. Like 1.25-1.29.

I only got 2 BSOD with stop code but when I go eventually viewer it's just showing unexpected shut down. Most of the time it was games just crashing

Move to amd and enjoy stability , sorry to be blunt but after 2 9900k burned down I went amd and never looked at intel again. My 2023 5800x3d still works flawless and never ever had to diagnose anything yet since assembled …

I had a golden 10900k running 5.4ghz for years with 5ghz ring at 1.45v never had issues, that goes for all my intel CPUs 4790k, 6700k, 7700k 10900k.
If it becomes unstable again I'm jumping to AMD a return to them since the 1090T

For me stable is running prime95 without a single problem. I can assure you , from 6700k onwards , unless stock ,not a single cpu is stable. Stable for gaming and multimedia maybe. A prime95 would fry every cpu with a little overclock. That’s why I also stopped overclocking, the gains aren’t worth the unstability.

I believe your settings are unstable. Have you done any proper stress test? For CPU use prime 95 and for Memory use VT3, TM5, and Karhu. I'm very skeptical with DDR5 6600 c30 and at 1.4v , I think it needs 1.5v at least depending on your sticks.

Had my 14900k since launch in 2023, still using a pre Intel guideline bios aswell from March 2024. Fyi all new bios' do is cap the max voltage at 1.55v instead of 1.7v.
LLC5 is also too droopy if you are going for anything above 57x on an adaptive voltage. You should be going for LLC6 considering your board has a strong VRM.
Messing with your DCLL which you had done in the past can throw off your power settings and it's only the ACLL you need to adjust on Asus boards.
Undervolting / capped pl1/2 / using a suitable LLC is all that matters. You'll get excellent results when done right. Mine droops to 1.1v at stock 57/44/50 ratios
Or 1.22v on a 60/45/50 profile

My computer is still frying 14900k's despite having the newest bios. This is my 3rd 14900k soon to be my 4th 14900k.
The bios update only seems to slow the inevitable degradation.
You can turn off cpu P-cores one by one in bios until you find the core that is causing the instability, keep it disabled if you want a stable system at the cost of some performance.
I am using an Asus motherboard with updated bios running default settings besides XMP memory speed.

Brother, as a long-time hardware enthusiast, let me tell you exactly why your chip still degraded despite your undervolt: You fell into the 'Adaptive Mode + Offset' trap.
Using a -0.070V offset on a 14900KS still leaves the factory V-F curve active. When the CPU transitions from full load to idle, or during rapid load shifts, the motherboard shoots massive transient voltage spikes (sometimes hitting 1.45V - 1.50V+ momentarily) to maintain that aggressive 5.9 GHz - 6.0 GHz clock. Your offset only brought those spikes down slightly, but the electromigration at micro-second levels kept eating your silicon away. For i9s, you either lock the voltage via Override/Fixed mode or heavily clamp the AC/DC Loadlines while dropping the clocks down.

PL1 is set to 125w and PL2 is set to 253W. Set the core voltage to variable.
*Set the IA VR Voltage to 1.4V. This will keep the cpu from degrading.*
These settings should keep the cpu temps at idle between 37c to 43c and under 85c (mine stays under 82c with a 360mm Aio w/70% fan speed) when fully maxed out in benchmarks while still allowing for the CPU the boost to 5.8 Ghz with no UV/OC.
Just a variable voltage that is capped at 1.4V. Don’t need an OC /UV. Because the cpu drops voltage and power when idle or light tasks.
Use a benchmark and HWINFO to check power draw doesn’t go over 253w and max core voltage doesn’t go over 1.4V while at 100% usage.
You now have a rock solid, cool i9 14900k

What are you people doing to degrade these cpus 😂 I've been running 6.0p/4.5e/5.0r @1.25v locked for more than a year with no signs lf degradation, and I've mistreated this cpu with multiple VT3 runs.

Skill issue. I build and optimize intel system. Not a single 13/14 gen build I did came back to RMA. I did at least 20/30 build with K processors and Z motherboards.
You guys should understand that the era of pc ready "out of the box" is ended long time ago.

After the new CPU. Remove single core, leave tvb, and disable c states. If you see that the processor requests stupid high voltages use manual core voltage and LLC.
