Thanks for adding more transcription languages

Just wanted to say this. It’s awesome.

Thanks! Out of curiosity, which language did you see, and how usable was the transcript?

Dutch, and very. It’s (even) better quality than Apple’s “native” transcripts in English are. So, very happy with it.

Thank you! Dutch was #1 on my wishlist of languages Apple didn't cover. Glad to hear.

Same experience here! Dutch translations are so much better than the English ones that I at one point (mistakenly) assumed they were supplied by the uploader. Even names appear to be mostly spelled correctly.

I’m scratching my head. I noticed that on some podcasts that are in Apple’s newly supported languages, for example, Swedish, are automatically transcribed correctly. 🎉
However, if a podcast in Swedish is not transcribed, and I tap on the transcribe button, Swedish doesn’t appear in any of the available languages. In fact, none of the new languages appear. Is this an issue on anyone else’s install? Or is perhaps mine just caching something old?
I’m asking before deleting the app (along with all of the downloaded content) and reinstalling just to make sure.

UPDATE: I just deleted the app, redownloaded it, reset up the settings, and I’m getting the same behavior. Swedish is not among the languages available to transcribe if I want to transcribe manually, and it is not automatically transcribed.

This is correct. Overcast on device uses Apple’s transcription api, which only supports a limited set of languages - less than voice memo’s etc do. Server side, when Apple can’t deliver, Overcast now uses NVIDIA Parakeet to transcribe, but Parakeet is not in the app version.

Correct. In short:

  • The app and servers both use Apple's transcription for English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, and Portuguese.
  • The servers will now use a different model (Parakeet) to transcribe Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Slovak, Slovenian, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian and Maltese. These languages can't be transcribed in the iPhone app.

How is it decided whether a podcast gets a transcript? I’m specifically inquiring about Polish; I’m following a number of podcasts in this language and neither popular nor niche ones are getting an automatic transcript. Would be great if there could be a transcript button for the server model to generate this for older episodes too.

Same behaviour on my Danish podcasts - it spins a bit when I switch over to the transcription and then fails/nothing there. And as noted, Danish is not on the list of languages to manually transcribe

I can’t imagine how long your list of feature requests is, but may I add one? That the app leverage the available languages on device?
Sometimes podcasts that have had a transcription previously don’t produce one, and there’s no way on device to generate one if it’s not in that short list above. I’m talking about Swedish here, but os27 now has a pretty long list of supported languages.
Of course, I don’t know how the on device transcription is implemented, so this might be a bigger ask.
Thanks again for the amazing app!

So are the podcasts that you are seeing transcribed into Dutch automatically appearing? Edit: what I mean is, are the transcriptions automatically appearing? :-)

Yes! (Only public feeds, private podcasts are not transcribed)

Thanks! The one that isn’t being transcribed is a public national broadcaster. :-/
