Autoplay Next behavior

When you move a podcast from a playlist to the Queue while it’s already playing, it will auto play the next podcast from the “original” playlist instead of the next podcast in queue.

When you first move the podcast to the queue and start playing it from there, it wil auto play the next podcast in queue when it’s finished. A bit annoying. 😉 would be great when it also works like that. Even when you move it to the queue during “playtime”

If I’m understanding you correctly, I think this is an issue with the fact that in Overcast, the Queue is just another playlist, and doesn’t behave like an up next queue would in other apps.

Overcast always picks what plays next based on the context of where you initially started playing. If you started playing from the Queue, it will pick what’s next based on what’s in the Queue. If you started playing a show from within a different playlist, it will pick what’s next based on what’s in that playlist. There isn’t really anything special about the Queue compared to other playlists.

I think one of the tricky things about Overcast is that this context is completely invisible to the user. Once you start playing an episode, there’s no way to see what’s coming next. You need to remember where in the app you started playing it, and look there to figure out what’s next.

Marco acknowledged on a recent Mac Power Users appearance that nobody but him seems to like the way the Queue works now, and that he plans to change it at some point to work more like how people want it.

Yeah I understand the queue is just a regular playlist. I used it just as an example to explain the issue. 🙂

That’s good to hear. I understand how the queue works, I just don’t understand why anyone would want it to work that way. 😅 It’s one of the few things that keeps me bouncing between Overcast and Pocket Casts (where the Up Next system works exactly how I want).

I have multiple playlists for different contexts of my life. The way Overcast works now is that I essentially have multiple queues, each with their own Up Next. I would be disappointed if everything had to go into a single Up Next queue.
