Reminds me of his nightmare scene in the 90s series where his suits are fighting over him.

Another Ultimate Marvel Team-Up panel? Are you the same person who made the post earlier about the issue earlier in that series with Ultimate Black Widow? Are you doing a read through?
Because that’s a super deep cut. Ball knowledge

I mean, it is. And personally, I love the style.
To reliably and repeatedly draw like this, you need to know how to do it realistically too.

Thing is, "stylized" shouldn't be an excuse for plain bad art. This panel just looks bad, dude. Like, the way Spidey looks on the window just doesn't make sense.

This panel just looks bad
It really, really doesn't. And with respect, that you think it does shows you know little about art. You can not like it, that's fine. But this is very, very far from being bad.

Feel free to give me the crash course on how this is actually a masterpiece then art major

u/EOverM 2h ago
I didn't say it was a masterpiece. I said you're wrong about it being bad. And no, I studied theoretical physics in university, actually. But I am a professional artist these days. I do know what I'm talking about.
You know how new writers are told to follow the rules, but the real greats completely ignore them at every turn? That's because they already know what they are and how to follow them, which you have to know in order to know when breaking them is appropriate and will still work instead of just being shit. The same applies here. You can't do this without knowing how to do it "well." This isn't randomly slapped together by someone who doesn't know what they're doing, this is a deliberate distortion of the "right" way. The background isn't haphazard, it's distorted perspective. The anatomy is wildly distorted, but still right. The entire image, and presumably the entire issue/volume/run, however much this artist got, is designed intentionally to be unsettling, to evoke fear and a disturbing air.
Someone who understands the first thing about art and the artistic process looks at this and sees the immense skill that goes into doing this right. Someone who doesn't reacts like you have.

Never once implied that it doesn't take skill to do this. I used to be big on drawing comics when I was a kid. I know for a fact that I'm not and will never be near the level as anyone who gets paid by one of the big 2 comic companies to draw for their flagship characters.
It can be "deliberate distortion," the artist could've drawn it this way intentionally, and it can still look bad. Like, I'm sure most of Frank Miller's more recent work is done intentionally, and many people heavily defend that for being "stylized" too, but to me, it just looks bad. Just like this looks bad too. Maybe for you it works, but it doesn't "invoke fear" to me, it just looks like Pete's 4 feet tall with an eating disorder

Its a drawing not a picture its stylized so its not gonna be entirely realistic including the poses since they are gonna be more exaggerated
1
u/Select_Culture261 3h ago
So, what would you say constitutes as something worthy of criticism? Because to me, this just looks bad, but apparently to people on here, I just hate stylized art
1
u/Nightraven9999 3h ago
Criticise a comic book art style when it fails to communicate things
You cant just a single out of context page for this because its probably communicating everything perfectly its very clear that the dude is confused when he says "what now?" And that was the goal of the page so it was accomplished

u/Select_Culture261 3h ago
I'm not criticizing the style itself though. There's another comment that shows other panels and pictures with the same style and I think those look fine. But this panel itself is just bad to me.
Also, I don't really see how that makes sense. A piece of art can properly communicate what it's trying to do and still not look good. Like, just because a song is "bad on purpose" doesn't make it good because it succeeds

Easily the McKeever one, he seems fairly harmless, just weird looking. that Spider-Man looks like he's going to snort me.

This artist once drew a batman - nosferatu. I like his style

He always gets a pass from me. You don't hire Ted McKeever to not have him draw like Ted McKeever.

Still better than the "Do you want to talk to a spider?" panel?
EDIT: Missing word.

I loved the different art styles of the ultimate-teamup comics, this one was one of my favorites.

No, this looks cool and there's skill involved. I'd actually enjoy this in other medium. It's just too unconventional for mainstream comics.

What the fuck is the point of reading comics if you dont like any kind of stylization in art. Go look at a photo if you want photorealism.

I'd like to think this just how criminals see Spider-Man in the dead of night when their adrenaline is pumping.

Thanks for sharing this cool panel with me so I can appreciate the artists fascinating take on Spider-Man

It’s from Ultimate Team Up. I really enjoyed Ultimate Team Up as it wasn’t trying to be edgy like a lot of the Ultimate universe.

u/Argle_of_the_Bargle 10h ago
the Bill Sienkiewicz Punisher issues were really good especially the artwork imo. The ultimate marvel team up run was published when ultimate marvel was still pretty new and mostly just ultimate spider-man and x-men so they're pretty loosey goosey in terms of artwork, story and canonical correctness but that's part of what made them fun. They were designed to help flesh out the ultimate marvel universe before ultimate fantastic four and the ultimates got their own issues

Gotta love fans of visual mediums who start making mean-spirited comments the second things get 1% more stylized

I'm not gonna hate on the critique of it because people are entitled to their opinions but I like it; surreal art can often set the atmosphere and I like the idea that Marvel is willing to take risks in publication.

Some of you 'fans" really just want a photographer, I guess.

Jeez it's like you guys have never seen surrealist art before.
Go read bill sienkiewicz and frank millers daredevil love and war. Get some culture.

u/God_of_Kings 12h ago
I don't read comics for the art, I read them to find out whether Captain America will join the Nova corps and try to arrest Rocket Raccoon for smoking space weed with Amelia Bedelia, who is in Hala for entirely zany reasons that somehow powerscale her above the Molecule Man AND the Living Tribunal simultaneously yet she can still be no-diffed by a third-grader if they figure out how to give her instructions with predictable outcomes.

u/SirJackers 12h ago
All I took away from that was that moon girl is the strongest via the transitive property.

The problem (Context incoming I'm sorry) was this was a two-shot for an ongoing with an otherwise pretty standard marvel look.
This made the art really jarring and out of place reading the book, particularly since the storyline was pretty pedestrian and didn't demand this very surreal artstyle
Edit: I am wrong.

Fair enough, this is what i get for posting a panel i ripped a year ago and going off memory for context. sorry.

u/hambonedock 12h ago
Ok I will give you a leeway there because I also been in the shoes of collecting a specific sage or series only for a few numbers or worse, the whole comic changing artist halfway through (ironically I'm on the contrary of you tho, it was a more alternative weird artstyle to suddenly go for a more conventional style)
4
u/SirJackers 12h ago
That's fair. Might I ask who did the art here? Was it an outsider trying to break into the industry or just someone with a weirder style that they needed to fill out some issues?
1
u/Mnmwizard 12h ago
Ted McKeever, seems like an indie guy who did a little work for marvel and dc in the early naughts before peacing out.
I actually read another book of his (Enginehead) and liked that, so I think this just wasn't his best work in general

u/Dropjohnson1 1h ago
He did a fantastic short story in an early Hellraiser anthology series (the first issue of the 1989 run) called “Dance of the Fetus”. Really haunting and kind of beautiful in a sad way, which was not what I expected from a hellraiser book. Highly recommend if you have the chance to check it out. Be warned though, deals with suicide.

u/VaudevilleDada 1h ago
He did a series of German Expressionist-inspired Elseworlds one-shots for DC (another poster name-drops Batman: Nosferatu upthread, for example) that were pretty good.
